I ordered the Papa a la Huancaína, an empanada, an alfajor, and an Inca Kola, and the total came out to $28.54. For nearly $30, I expected much better portion sizes. I don't even have a huge appetite, and the amount of food I received was still surprisingly small. The service was also disappointing from the moment I arrived. The restaurant was completely empty, yet no one greeted me or acknowledged me when I walked in. I eventually had to walk over to the bar area myself to ask about my pickup order. The woman working there looked confused that I was even asking and mumbled a response I could barely understand. I figured maybe she was busy, so I waited, but the entire experience became increasingly uncomfortable. I stood there awkwardly for about 10 minutes while the employees talked amongst themselves and kept looking over at me, yet no one updated me on my order or even spoke to me. The worst part was the food itself. The potatoes in the Papa a la Huancaína were cold and partially raw. I literally had to finish cooking them in the microwave at work. The empanada was decent, and the alfajor would have gotten better marks if it weren't for the small hair I found on it, but overall the experience was not worth the price. As a Peruvian, I can say their anticuchos are some of the tastiest ones I have had all my life. I have yet to try them in person with full memory, but I have ordered take out twice and both orders have included Anticuchos. When I stepped into Don Churro for the first time post covid, I didn't recognize the place. Looks like they changed ownership at some point and revamped everything from the interior to the menu. My lomo dish was muy delicioso . The saltiness of the lomo sauce was just the right amount combined with the creaminess of the fettuccine huancaina. The steak pieces were tender and juicy and cooked just right. I docked a star for the slowness of the service. There is one waitress tending to 2 tables. Each time I've gone, there has only been about 2 or 3 tables seated. But it takes so long to take our order or get the bill. I am surprised by the low rating. I actually enjoy Don Churro. I came here for the first time a few months ago. Now it is one of my regular spots. The menu is pretty extensive. They serve cuisines from different South American countries. But I think they specialized mostly in Peruvian food. My first time here, I ordered the Aji de Gallina. It is chicken in a creamy bright yellow pepper sauce served on white rice. I never had it before and I thought it was great. I absolutely love the chicken soup with potatoes and vegetables. It is a flavorful and hearty dish. I also enjoy the pollo milanesa. I don't think Pollo Milanesa is offered on their regular menu. I believe it was part of a lunch special. Don Churro is always a great experience. At least once a month, this is a standing date night location! There are always coupons going on for this store and it's such a hidden GEM. Open Table is accepted, Yelp offers 15% if you check in, they have a deal with restuarants.com, etc. So far we have tried the Arroz Con Pollo (fried rice with chicken mixed in and topped with fried plantains), Bandeja Paisa (NY Strip, pork belly, chorizo, rice, beans), Empanada sampler, corn snack and of course the Churros! The servings sizes are HUGE, which is great cause the prices are a little high then normal "entrées" at other places. So on our dates, we split one entrée and choose if we want to share an appetizer or a desert. We also only sit at the bar as it's normally quiet and quant when we get there. Here's the secret - this place changed ownership sometime over the past year or so but kept the same name. If you have not been here since then and are looking for Peruvian cuisine, you need to come back again soon. I frequent Don Churro now at least one a week, usually on Friday evenings. I work long hours during the week and admit that my eating habits are not the best. Coming here on Friday fixes that problem as I usually order the 'bistec de barrio', which is a very filling plate with a solid tasting of a number of things. Bacon, steak, grilled chorizo sausage, plantains, an amazing rice dish called tacu tacu, and more. Enjoy it with a nice glass of red wine, or even better, a cold bottle or two of Cerveza Cristal from Peru, and you can't ask for anything better. And the service is top notch. Holy guacamole! My friend offered me to explore this local Peruvian restaurant that I've never been to and I LOVED IT! It was to celebrate my birthday over the weekend. She introduced me to Don Churro. At first, I was not able to spot this place at night but to those of you who are interested, it is in between ThrillZone (recently opened arcade/entertainment place) and Virginia Tire & Auto. They had a perfect texture with juicy flavor. The side potatoes and corn that comes with skewer were such a good appetizing menu to go for. MUST TRY! - Cebiche clasico It was my first time trying this dish. I have never experienced ceviche in general so I was half scared but also half excited. My friend told me that she was never a fan of it at the beginning but I actually really liked the lime juice flavor with raw fish. Surprisingly it was almost very refreshing taste from cilantro and lime juice which I liked very much. If you are a noob like me in Peruvian/Spanish food, just give it a try! If you favor anything sour, you would love that! - Arro con marisco PAELLAAAAAA, my all time favorite. Of course, my love of seafood and moist rice. We had a late lunch today expecting to eat at one of the three outdoor tables but decided it was too cold. The indoor tables are widely spaced, none of the patrons was talking loudly, and the staff was wearing masks so we took a chance and sat inside. I had the choripan sandwich and my wife had the pan with chicharron. Both were served on really superb pan frances and accompanied with flavorful salsas and a side. I had the salad as a side. I've been to the Don Churro Cafe twice now. The first time for lunch as a "Lunch with Like Minded People" UYE outing, and today for dinner. The first time was while I was on vacation for a week - it was a really hot day out - which always seems to sap my appetite - so I ordered some light things that I might not usually order - as a result I had something for lunch that was not really my cup of tea. Jimena M. organized the lunch, and we were joined by James L. (who was first to arrive), and Natasha O. We were supposed to be joined by that rambunctious Irishman - Paul M. - but he stood us up with no warning. :-) I ordered a Caesar salad and their version of a chicken soup - Caldo de Pollo - chicken broth with potatoes and vegetables. It tasted like a generic canned chicken soup broth - complete with what looked like a boiled chicken leg. Not very good. However, my dinner outing was outstanding. Lemme tell ya about it! After looking over the menu - and referencing the Yelp reviews for the place, Lizette A.'s review stood out - I took her recommendation and I ordered the Tacu-Tacu. It's a beef entree - a Peruvian mixture of rice and red beans served with a grilled steak on top and salsa criolla. I also added an order of their fries since so many people raved about how good they are. And a glass of water. I ordered the steak medium. I'm not sure of the exact cut of steak - but it was like a flank or hangar steak. When the food came out - my server asked if I wanted any hot sauce. Hell yes! She brought me a souffle cup with a small quantity of a pale orange substance - some sauce they whip up. Color was gorgeous. She then asked if I wanted their hottest hot sauce. Again - hell yes! She then brought me a souffle cup of something that was a rich, brilliant orange - that just screamed in color - BEWARE! I cut a piece of steak and tasted - very flavorful. The red beans and rice were very mild, yet tasty, and the fries - well were just french fries - but they were cooked perfectly - crisp and hot. I then tried the hot sauces (see the attached pix). First the mild sauce - nice flavor and not overwhelming. I then smelled the second, hotter sauce. Habanero-based sauces give off a certain odor and this one was warning that it was damn hot. I dipped my steak into it and tasted away. Wow! I was perspiring. One of the hotter hot sauces I've had in a while. A home run! I am impressed by the hotness of this hot sauce - Jeff W. you need to try! After I finished dinner, I decided to try their Churros. I've never had a Churro and until recently when a work colleague asked me if they served Churros - I had no knowledge of their existence. So after asking about them and having my server describe them to me - I placed an order for - two Churros - one filled with chocolate, one filled with caramel - ala mode - with a side of vanilla ice cream. The Churros are served with a small amount of whipped cream in either corner of the dessert plate. As I had my first taste - I was struck at how rich and yummy this was - as my eyes rolled back in my head. My server asked how I liked them. My best description is that they reminded me of hot, gooey, fresh-out-of-the-oven chocolate chip cookies - oozing with melted chocolate. And demanding an ice cold glass of milk! She laughed and asked if I wanted a glass of milk - which of course I did! I was surprised at how much my bill was: Tacu Tacu: $14.95 Papas Fritas: $3.75 Churros Rellenos mix: $4.50 Vanilla ice cream: $4.50 Milk: $2.00 Total: $31.19 Service was excellent - I tipped her $6.20. The prices were a little high but I'm glad to pay under the current circumstances with COVID and all. I had the Bandeja Paisa which was more than I could eat at one sitting. Everything on the plate was very tasty, especially the beans. South American food can be a little plain so the two sauces they give you def gave it a little pop that I enjoyed. There aren't very many places to eat lunch in Chantilly so my coworkers and I have made it our duty to methodically scour the area for good eats! Also I've noticed that service has been getting slower and slower.....it makes me wonder if the food's just sitting waiting to be served and nobody really cares. There's even a combo option which lets you choose an empanada or saltena and a sandwich. Dinner is a different ball game....you've definitely got way more options but the portions aren't much bigger for a heftier price! so if you're in the Chantilly area, you should definitely check this place out especially if you're tired of your usual lunch spots! read more
