The quarter chicken is a lot bigger than expected- and the yuca is fried perfectly with a golden crisp. Beef tongue was flavored well but understandably tough and the fried chicharron has a crispy outside but was expecting it to be crispy throughout. Fantastic food! This place is a hidden gem as it's located in a busy shopping plaza. From the outside, the place doesn't look like much but it has a very nice interior and comfortable booths to sit in. The menu has a higher number of options than you would expect and a lot of great dishes to choose from. Everybody at my party had trouble deciding just because everything looked so good. The prices were very reasonable for higher quality food. The staff was helpful and friendly and service was prompt. I will definitely be coming back. read more

The food was great, and the waitress was very helpful in explaining dishes I was not familiar with (I think she recognized that I probably had an inaccurate picture of seco in my head when I heard it described as "beef stew", and she was right haha). I did wish the seco came with a little more broth, but it was still delicious. The pop/soda is fountain, not can, so there are refills. The atmosphere was nice; the booths and tables are not too crowded together, and the music is an interesting blend of Spanish- and English language songs. This is a very good Peruvian restaurant focusing on the standards. We had Lomo saltado and Seco Ala nortena. Both were nicely prepared with quality ingredients. The beef in the seco was very tender and flavorful, the beans were excellent. An unexpected surprise was the free chips and carrot salsa. It had a wonderfully sharp flavor. When you enter with the art work glass display cabinet, the artwork, and the authentic Indigenous Central American tablecloths you are transformed to a small street level restaurant in your favorite Latin American country. For years I wanted to try this place but never got around to doing so. After reading recent Yelp reviews, I convinced my husband to give it a try. We were here on a Saturday around 5 p.m. At that time of day, business was slow. A server greeted us in Spanish at first, then switched to English. He told us to sit wherever we wanted. There were 2 TVs with the sound muted. Each one was showing a different program. The background music was salsa and my husband told me he thought the music sounded like it was Puerto Rican, and I concurred. Each meal comes with complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were fresh and crispy plus the salsa had just enough spice. Before coming here, we looked at the menu online so we knew what we wanted to try. For an appetizer, we shared a cheese pupusa. We both enjoyed it and it came with a generous amount of slaw plus the tomato sauce had a bit of a kick to it. To drink, we both got Inca Kola. For my main course, I chose chaufa de res (chaufa rice with beef). The portion was very generous. However, this dish was a disappointment. While the rice had good flavor, it was very dry. The beef was inconsistent---some pieces were tender, others were dried out and bland. My husband got the 1/4 chicken rotisserie dinner. He chose dark meat and for his sides, he chose rice and beans. He said the chicken was moist but the skin was a bit too salty. The beans were very bland. As he put it, nothing to write home about. Maybe we didn't order the right items. Yet, neither of us is inclined to go back and try other things. Service was good, the waiter was low key and unobtrusive. Before the tip, dinner cost $30.05. Came to pick up pollo al a brasa - best within 20 miles. The chicken is moist and flavorful. Tallerin saltado has good balance of meat and noodles. Generous portions. Kid-friendly. Staff is fantastic! Friendly and welcoming. Put up with my rusty Spanish with a smile. Before I left, their manager came over to tell me they'd made a mistake with my bill. I'd asked about a side dish but didn't order it. She told me they'd accidentally charged me for it, apologized and gave me a refund slip for the difference. I hadn't even noticed. We ordered chocolate cake and it was not fresh, we wanted to get a refund but the server said that her manager wouldn't take it back. We spoke to the manager and he insisted that the cake was fresh, that he got it that morning and he couldn't give us credit back because he buys it from someone and he has never had a complaint. The lower 4 star rating is more for the decor, although not exactly "welcoming" for a native of the Northern Virginia eats, the food more than makes up for it. My orders were the cheese and bean fill papusa's for appetizers. This was an amazing app as it came with what seemed I be coleslaw and red hot sauce. Definitly combine the 2 on the papusa's as it really brings out the hidden flavors of the bread/corn meal. For my entree I ordered the bistek lo pobre which consisted of salad, rice, fried plantains, flank steak (rather large portion) and fries (which is subbed for yuca). YESSSSSSSSSS! I found my replacement for my beloved Pollos Inka. I'd swear this restaurant is owned by the same person! As I've mentioned in other reviews, my friends and I went to Pollos Inka every Tuesday for over 20 years until it recently closed, leaving us disappointed and searching for a place like it. Well, after an exhaustive search, we have found it! The restaurant is spacious, the servers are attentive and gracious and they speak much better English than those at Pollos Inka. The chips and salsa are fresh and delicious, the chicken is outstanding- plump and juicy, with a terrific taste. The pollo saltado is freaking fantastic- dare I say, better than Pollos Inka! The pescado frito is great, lightly battered and perfectly fried fish and the sauces- yellow (mild), green (slightly spicy), red (hot) are outstanding and are served in squeeze bottles so you get as much as you want. This is about a 10 minute longer drive than Pollos Inka was, but it is well worth it for us. Looks like we will see the folks at Pollos Inti every Tuesday for the next 20 years (I hope). read more

I've been on a pupusa kick lately and when I found out this Peruvian restaurant made pupusas I definitely had to try it. Seriously, the pupusas here are really good. A lot better than some I've had at actual Salvadorian restaurants. The way they prepare them is perfect. They come out hot and oozing with cheese and not overly greasy, at all. I like to come here for their lunch deal: 3 cheese pupusas (or pork and cheese) and a 16 oz soda with free refills for $6.49 + tax. A great lunch deal since the pupusas are a decent size and I get full after a pupusa and a half. The cabbage that come with it is the best I've had. It really goes well with the pupusas along with the spicy tomato sauce. The alfaores are a nice treat. It's around like $3 a cookie but seriously worth it. The shortbread is super soft and flaky and the dulce de leche melts in your mouth. It's probably better to eat with a glass of milk since it's so soft and get stuck to the roof of your mouth, but really delicious. I would definitely recommend coming during lunch hour when they have their specials. I ordered the same amount of pupusas around dinner time once and it came out to almost $9 by themselves. I probably won't go back here. It was an unremarkable experience, so I don't think I'll waste a lot of space on it here. Here's the breakdown: I had: Calamari, which came deep-fried in tons of batter with yucca root. It was a HUGE portion, but I would've much rather had SOMETHING healthful on the plate. I wish the menu had been a little more descriptive so I had known what I was getting. Oh, I think there was a side of something mayonnaisey like an egg/potato/pasta (honestly I couldn't tell) salad. A side of vegetable of some sort would've been much better. The food was OK, but I didn't feel great after eating it, and they definitely don't get the concept of a balanced meal. Compadres had: Rotisserie-style chicken and some chicken dish in a yellow gravy that tasted like chicken and dumplings. Overall, no one thought the food was bad, but no one really raved about it. Service: Not bad, not amazing. We had to do a lot of pointing. Not sure our waitress spoke English. Setting: Very divey. Definitely a place that screams authenticity. As in, not really for the non-Peruvian crowd. Oh, and there was a little guy who started blaring music and then signing in Spanish at the front of the restaurant. It was turned WAY up. Made it difficult to have a conversation or hear. He was almost endearing, if only it had been a better sound system and properly managed. Sort of weird, though. Price: Not as cheap as what you'd pay for similar food nearby. This doesn't seem much different from Mexican food, but it still ran us $13-15 per plate. Final judgment: It was an experience I think I'm glad I had, but I can't think of a time I'd ever really want to go back. read more

I did not appreciate the lack of creamy yellow mayonnaise-y dressing. The chicken came with white and green dressing. The white was ranch dressing. No me gusto. The green was fine. The waitress brought a red dressing as well. This dressing was pure "aji" or chili paste. Very HOT! Cleared my Eustachian tubes out! For those who care about this sort of thing, there were mostly Peruvians eating at this Peruvian restaurant. The atmosphere was typical with three TVs showing "football" satellite TV, and there were lots of tables and chairs for the configurations of families out for their Sunday meal. In keeping with the nuances of cultural expertise, I must point out that the queso used was not "en point" as it was not from Peru. On the other hand, the Papas de Huancaina had the right kind of sauce. Creamy, pale yellow and covering the potatoes like a fondant. I liked the prices until they charged us $3.99 for extra Huancaina sauce. Considering that the actual dish cost $5.99, it was a rip-off. The giant corn (choclo) with cheese sticks was $4.49, the half chicken with yuca fries was $8.40, and the fruit pudding dessert of Mazamorra (purple, jello-like with prunes and apricots) was $2.99. First time trying this place because we happened to be in the shopping center and had a craving for Peruvian Chicken. Upon walking in, we noticed it wasn't your typical Rotisserie place, but a full fledged Peruvian / Central American sit down restaurant with nice restaurant style laminated quality menus. You can get your typical 1/4 chicken and a side and salad for about 6 bucks... or you can try your hand at some of their authentic entrees to the tune of about $9 to $15 or so. Seeing Lomo and Pollo Saltado on the menu, I just knew we had to get it. I had heard good things about it before, but just hadn't had the chance to get it elsewhere yet... so that decision was easy. For our other entree, we decided to play it safe and see what they could do in the rotisserie chicken department. This was our first experience with Saltado and I'm now hooked. If you've never had Lomo or Pollo Saltado before, you should give it a try. It's so much goodness on one plate. You have the perfectly sauteed veggies onions and tomatoes that have been simmering in some light but flavorful white wine sauce with hints of soy sauce... take all that and dump it on top of a pile of french fries (are you kidding me? Awesome) and then put a generous scoop of perfectly cooked white rice on the side. I seriously think this dish could fight for my favorite dish. Now, like I said, it was our first time trying Saltado... so I can't say how it stacks up against any other place.. but now I can confidently say if I see it on a menu anywhere, I will order it. So good. You should try it. The Rotisserie chicken was no slouch either! It was seasoned well with a nice crispy crust from the flames. It was a little on the salty side, but not too salty. Perfectly moist in the middle. A great rendition of Peruvian chicken. I saved the little wing for last... it was kapow! packed with flavor. I chose Yucca as a side and salad comes by default as the other side. The yucca was fried up fresh and hot, so couldn't ask for much more in that department. The salad had some thought put into it... it had a good assortment of veggies and wasn't simply a pile of iceberg. The ranch-ish dressing that came with it had a nice sweet tangy flavor and I used it all. It was good. Also, after you are seated they bring you out chips and salsa. The salsa was different, had a pickled taste to it, but we both enjoyed it thoroughly.... In fact, when nobody was looking, I took down the remainder of it like a shooter. The chips left something to be desired, but we ate them all anyhow because we were hungry. They also bring out big squirt bottles of their green and yellow sauce for the table. Both of the sauces were tasty. Used them both generously. The staff was very friendly and inviting. When we had to take some some of the generous portions home they even offered us some sauce to go without us asking. A nice friendly touch. I am also a big fan of their pupusas revueltas ( Salvadorean dish) which have pork and cheese inside and is served with a cabbage salad called curtido. Another one of my favorite meals is the lomo saltado (peruvian dish) which steak strips cooked with tomato, onions, and fries served with white rice!! When ordering yucca make sure to ask them to cook it well done. Sometimes the yucca comes out hard in the center. Their green and yellow sauce is always very good to top your food with. This has been my go to Peruvian chicken spot for several years. Everything has always been delicious. I recently branched out and tried several other dishes on recommendation of the owner. I'm so glad I did! The escabeche was fantastic and definitely a new favorite. Way better than the description on the menu. My family also enjoyed the mondonguito italiano as well as several other delicious items. I am looking forward to trying more dishes. Try it out and branch out from the usual. We have been here numerous times over the past several years (I'd say 10+ yrs) and when we went back for lunch today we discussed this may have been the first Peruvian Chicken joint we tried 10years ago or so in the Reston/Sterling area....so, I decided I should finally write a Yelp review... The servers are typically very friendly and helpful. The last several times we have been there the service has been great. I can't say a bad word about the servers as they are always smiling and welcoming. The lunch special - 1/4 Chicken Dark with 2 sides and a soda is a great deal at just under $8 bucks. We typically go with the rice and side salad. The chicken is very flavorful and I would stack it against any other Peruvian Chicken joint in the area. You also get free chips and salsa with the meal. The salsa isn't your typical mexican style salsa but a tangy, vinegary salsa with onions, carrots, a bit of cilantro etc. We like it very much and it is a good change of pace. Ask for the various sauces they provide for the chicken as well. They have a super spicy sauce for folks who like it hot and a cilatro based sauce also. Both are excellent with the chicken. There is also a special lunch menu that used to be printed under the glass on each table but the menu is no longer on the tables. I asked the waiter if they still have the lunch specials and he told me they do...ask for that menu. There are some additional excellent deals on various Latin American specialties such as the Lomo Saltado, Pollo Guisado, etc. and these are two of my favorites. Granted we haven't tried the extensive menu however what we have tried we have really enjoyed. Plus the place is typically 50% or more full of folks of Hispanic descent...can't be a bad choice when you see that. I've been a customer since the first time I went back in high school (I'm 30 now). I am very picky when it comes to international dishes, and it's difficult to find authentic quality these days; whenever I find a service/ anything I like, it becomes my go to. Whenever I want ceviche or lomo saltado, pollo inti is my go to spot! I'm a good cook, and can make both dishes well, but they make them better :) Prices are a little higher than other local Peruvian restaurants; but I'd rather pay a little more for exactly what I want, than pay slightly less and be less impressed. The only con I can think of is the amount of salsa you get as an appetizer before your meal arrives when dining in, but I prefer calling in my order for pickup so that's not really a huge concern for me ‍ read more

Rotisserie chicken is good and readily available in our area, but THIS PLACE is the full Peruvian culinary experience, over 83 menu items! FINALLY, I have the perfect source for Pollo Saltado, ceviche, and, my favorite Peruvian appetizer, Papa Rellena! That Pollo Saltado stir fry with the French fries mixed in soaking up the juice. OMG...Mmmm! The green sauce and the onion relish, both important criteria for me. I have it all now! Oh, how I've missed you! This place has also nailed it with their COVID safety - the best procedures I've seen so far. And in spite of the pandemic the food is fresh, well prepared, and nicely packaged for takeout and delivery. During this crises, we have sadly given up on several of our family-owned favorites because the quality just hasn't held up. These guys SET THE STANDARD on all fronts. My confession first: We went to this place just because Cerrito's Pupuseria was closed and wanted to try out a new Latin American restaurant. Wife and I found this place sitting cozy in a plaza that also had several other good food options. The restaurant was 70% filled and a guy was performing LIVE in one corner (We loved his singing!) We ordered 3 dishes, Arroz con Pollo, Lomo Saltado and Pupusas. We didn't enjoy Pupusa as much (maybe Pupuseria Dona Azucena has spoiled us). Maybe it was just us but we felt Arroz con Pollo tasted a lot like Chicken Biryani, which we DIG, and hence we enjoyed this dish very much. Coming from a Peruvian household I tend to critique the food I eat when I go to a Peruvian restaurant, so I'm sorry if I sound like I'm a chef judge on Chopped. Loved the goat stew with beans, a plentiful amount for $14, definitely a must try!!!! On the other hand: My boyfriend ordered the lomo saltado and it's a no go, you can taste the MSG, omg! I felt bad and let him have my dish since this was his first go round in this restaurant and I didn't want him traumatized. My Peruvian boyfriend and I frequent Pio Pio in Great falls (which we LOVE), but on a rainy night, decided we didn't want to drive the extra 10 mins to Great Falls and gave Pollos Inti a try. We were both pretty disappointed. The service was REALLY slow (and there were only 3 other tables with people. The pisco sours we ordered were terrible. We each got a ceviche, and I have nothing positive to say about that either... The fish was cubed (which isn't that big of a deal), the sauce tasted 'off' and the slices of onion were massive. Even the Peruvian popcorn wasn't good. The only thing that was tasty, IMO, was the yucca fries. Will definitely just make the drive to Great Falls going forward. read more

Came in here for the first time on a Friday night for some takeaway, and the place was basically empty. I see it's probably more like a lunch spot and one that caters mostly to takeaway. That being said, I ordered the half chicken with rice and salad. Waited about 5 minutes, and was sent along my way. The box was HEAVY. Good sign. So I think the chickens they use at PIR are slightly bigger than the ones at other local chicken shops I've been to around here. The half chicken was a lot of food, really well seasoned/spiced, and was still moist! Didn't have to contend with any dried-out stringiness. The rice had good flavor, and the salad was substantial.
