Ordered taco salad to go got home and the salad was completely drenched in ranch when we asked for ranch on the side called to let know the issue was told basically too bad. Not sure why this place has poor reviews. This place has never missed with my order and the food always taste fresh. It's as authentic as you can get here in OR City. During Fall/Winter they have champurrado (Mexican hot chocolate) and it is so delicious! I regret I did not get a photo. The food was fresh and the beef was tender. I got a basic wet burrito and my husband got the bean and cheese burrito. Met a friend across town for lunch here at Don Chico's. It's a fast-food-style (order at the counter, pick a table) Mexican restaurant. I am a sucker for lengua (beef tongue), so when I saw they had lengua tacos on the menu I of course had to order them. Ordered a plate of 4 tacos, and helped myself to the salsa bar while waiting. Salsa bar has a selection of salsas, peppers, limes, etc, decent. The food arrived after about 5 minutes. Tacos were very tasty. Lengua was perfectly cooked and tender. I added some of their pico de gallo salsa to it and it elevated them to perfection. Four tacos was the perfect number for this hungry guy and it's clear I'll have to be back to try other menu items when I'm on this side of town. Excellent Mexican eating here in OC. read more

Was looking for Mexican food in the area where I could order ahead that wasn't too far away or too expensive. I ended up ordering from this place. I got a combo with a beef enchilada and a chicken taco. The beef enchilada was very good. The chicken taco was so-so. The rice and beans were great. What the app didn't mention was that there was sour cream. Gross! Thankfully it wasn't all over the meal. I also ordered a burrito for my daughter-in-law which she enjoyed. Nope! I should have known better than to think I might get good food here, but I just needed a convenient lunch and went with the Grub Hub option. Order was not correct and the food was basic at best. Maybe because it is Grub Hub, they feel it doesn't matter? I Ordered two taco salads that should have had dressings included, but were not. The ground beef was over-salted. The menu lists "1 Pescado Tacos" which you can't tell if that is only 1 taco or one order of fish tacos, since the word "tacos" is plural which means more than one. We really love the enchiladas here but they are putting less & less enchilada sauce on them. They were to the point of being dry... enchiladas are supposed to be saucy. So we started paying for extra sauce. Now that is even a little on the dry side. It's starting to bum me out. The way they are with their salsa bar is kind if stingy too. They will not give you containers with lids for your to-go orders & all they will give you are tiny paper cups that fall apart inside your to go box. I think the guy who runs it is the main cook & he is just getting super stingy which is a bummer because I do like this place. The cashiers always look to him when I ask about where the sauce is & he seems annoyed & sometimes even seems to ignore them. He seems rude to the nice ladies that run the registers & bring food out. This food is legit. The only authentic Mexican food I've found in my area. You can tell it is made with love.

The staff has definitely changed since the last time I stopped in here. They're definitely not as friendly or efficient as they once were. We stopped in here with 2 of our kids for dinner. We ordered a variety of items: a chicken taco salad, a chicken wet burrito, a carne asada wet burrito, and the french toast special. We sat down at a table after choosing some salsas and veggies. Within minutes the taco salad was served. The strange thing is, that was the only thing served. Approx. 5-8 minutes later the wet burritos came to the table and then another 5-8 minutes later the French toast was served. It was odd that they would serve one table this way. I can't think of anywhere else that I've been that meals were served with a 15 minute delay from the first person served to the last. I'm glad this was with our kids and not friends meeting for a meal because that would have been uncomfortable waiting for everyone to be served. Our kids are very easy going and waited patiently without complaining. I did notice that they've made a few small changes. The salsa bar looks neater and cleaner and they still offer the jalapeños and onions in a neat set up as well. The tables didn't appear like they had been wiped down recently but we gave ours a little wipe down with napkins. The food was very good and nicely prepared when we dug in. This defiantly isn't a fancy sit down place but it's a nice diner style restaurant for a bite to eat. They don't offer any chips and salsa with meals. They meals don't come with the traditional beans and rice on the plate but you can order them on the side. Don't expect anything fancy here but the food is still good. The wife and I like going here when we want something lighter - not always what you might associate with a Mexican food place. Last week I had a side of enchiladas (3) chicken with green sauce. The wife had a couple of tacos Al pastor and we were both happy with our selections. The food send very fresh, prepared well and good value for the price. Today I'm having a carne asada chimichanga, the wife went for a breakfast burrito. Both of us received large servings, piping hot and very tasty. We get the side of chips freshly made, substituting flour tortillas. While they are not crispy the way corn tortillas would be, I really like the taste and texture of these. All of this with two drinks for under $20, not bad. They have a really extensive menu and a broader selection of fillings than most places. My dad wanted a zest in the meat. I thought it tasted like the meat was a higher grade of meat. I always appreciate a restaurant who is willing to spend extra for higher quality meats. $16 Queso with chorizo - definitely a go to. Yum. $7-$9. I've had breakfast burritos from here in the past and they were incredible. Tonight, I got two dinners to go. At best, they were lackluster. Not only was the food cold, it was incredibly stale. I had the Tamale and enchilada combo and my wife had the enchilada and chile relleno combo. The beans and rice were good. However, the meat in the tamale and enchilada was cold, dried out, and it seemed like it had been sitting around all day waiting for an unsuspecting to-go customer. The chile relleno was obviously prepared well in advance of our order (I'd be afraid to know the truth) and stale like it was reheated in a microwave oven. Hopefully this was just a bad Tuesday night for them, but we will not waste our money here again. read more

Typically I would give Don Chico's 3 stars but they saved our butts tonight so four it is. It wasn't bad food at all. It was a good meal. Nice enchiladas. They are not saucy, more seasoned than anything. The beans tasted like lard as they are meant to and the Spanish rice was seasoned. They have a cafeteria setting. Order at the counter, take a number and bus your tables when you are done. They also have a salsa bar. Interestingly enough, they serve breakfast all day. The menu is huge but the prices are not. Maybe not my favorite but they provided some solid food after having to leave another Mexican restaurant serving inedible food. Oregon City is crowded with Mexican restaurants and so far we have only found one 5 star quality home cooked Mexican food establishment. Highly recommend. Great food! We went after reading reviews mentioning a salsa bar and looking at review pictures of the food. This place did not disappoint. The food was great!! All of us got something different and each of us loved what we got. The salsa bar was a fantastic. It reminds me of what you see at Baja Fresh but better. You do buy chips but it was just $1.25 which I dId not mind paying as the food is very resonanibly priced. I got a soda, chips, and a Chimichanga combo (rice & beans) for $13.00 Wonderful customer service. I went here with my sister's family which includes two very little ones. The cashier was very kind and patient with us as this was our first visit and it took us some tome to make or selections. To top it off service was fast. We will be going back. I will add that at first when we walked in I was thrown off a bit as thIs is not a sit down restaurant like most Mexican restaurants I go to as in there is not a host that seats you and a waiter to take your order. You go up to the cashier and order, seat yourself, and they bring your food out to you. Just mentioning it so if you're wanting that atmosphere you know this is not that. If you like Don Padro's you will like Don Chico's. What's the same? Same large selection on the menu. Same condiment bar right down to the roasted peppers and onions. What's different? Table service. You still order at the counter and get your own condiments but they bring your food to you. I had a plate that I order at Don Padro's to make a comparison, the enchiladas, mild pork. Don Chico's version was noticeably dryer but the pork was crisper that the same at Don Padro's. Everything else on my plate was a mirror to Padro's. My lunch partner tried the chilie relleno. As with Don Padro's this was cheese stuffed pepper with an omelet wrapped around the outside. That's NOT the way a chilie relleno shoyld be made. The stuffed chilie should be dipped in an egg batter and then fried. She gave it a 3.5 out of 5, the same as with Padro's. Overall, we'd return and Chico's or Padro's are pretty much the same. read more

Bizarre. Looks nice on the outside, clearly run by Mexicans in the kitchen, tons of great reviews. Uniquely awful, bland food and the ambiance of a prison clinic. If you think ketchup is a perfect enchilada sauce (topped with bagged pre-shredded cheese,) you'll love it, too! Purple walls, white faux-marble floor, green-tinged florescent lights. Set up like a fast food restaurant from the sixties inside. The world is full of different types of people, and somehow this place has found an audience in a town with a few decent Mex joints. I can't imagine ever returning to this pit, but it apparently works for some. read more
