Got the platter for $30.95: -salad: good size, typical salad -grilled chicken: excellent. flavorful, juicy and not "chickeny" (if you're like me you know what I mean, I am a bit particular with grilled chicken). Def one of the best Peruvian chickens I have had. The green cilantro sauce was also excellent. -yellow rice: bland. could use a touch of salt. seems the color was added after cooking/as not stirred because it looked like some grains weren't yellow. Seems their yellow rice does mean it's seasoned like it usually means in other Hispanic places. tastes like bland white rice with color. -beans: good flavor, absolutely saved the rice and made it worth eating. -fried plantain side: total serving and even each individual plantain slice was much smaller than I have ever gotten but the flavor was good. The service was super friendly, but the food I would say was sub-par at most. I got the 1/4 chicken with rice instead of fries and the chicken was unbearably salty. My friend and I wound up at Don Alex's on Saturday evening after the restaurant we originally wanted to go to did not have any openings. What a true stroke of luck! Don Alex is a wonderful restaurant right off route 22 with delicious food! I had an order of Maduros to start and loved every second of them. Also, the tortilla chips came with salsa Verde peruana, which was also amazing. For dinner, I had lomo saltado, which is a dish of either chicken or beef with french fries, white rice, and peppers and onions. I have not had it in a while, but this dish hit the spot. I was a little shocked at how empty the restaurant was, considering how good the food was, but they also had a takeout side, which seem to have a lot of customers. If you are in the Kenilworth area, this is definitely worth a trip. read more

Al mesero y persona q me tomo la orden ( Jhonhairo) el cual me dijo, que la cocina cuando no tienen una presa te mandan la otra y que sorry, yo le respondí, te voy a llevar la orden porq es una pérdida de dinero para mi. Yo te pedí algo y me das lo q no es. El personaje Jhonhairo, sin importarle la perdida de dinero, me dijo básicamente, que si me gustaba bien sino también, ya no hay nada q hacer, porque devolver el dinero era imposible ya que estaba facturado. Le volví a repetir de que entonces iba a perder mi dinero porq esto se iba a ir a la basura y me repitió q eso era tema mío  Le pedí que me comunique con un gerente o dueño y me respondió que no había nadie. Le pregunte que a que hora podía comunicarme con uno de ellos y me respondió buena suerte. We really wanted Peruvian food and figured we try a new place. I called to ask if open and if there was a menu online. Woman who answered didn't speak English and didn't understand me. Decided to take the ride and order in person. Walk in and only 1 person working the front which makes sense during the quarantine! The second I walked in he starts talking to me in Spanish. When he finally stops I tell him I can't speak Spanish. He looks at me sadly and says "oh". Now 2 different people and 2 don't speak English. I have to point to my items on the menu that i want. Food is made quickly. I ordered the arroz chaufa beef and chicken. The price is similar to everywhere else $15 but you get no where near as much food and it might be the worst Peruvian fried rice i ever had. The container was the size of a side dish anywhere else. I would say maybe half as much as i have gotten at all other places. The rice was dry, some was burned and hard, there was no flavor and it was very greasy. Barely any chicken, beef or egg. It was basically all rice and scallions! I was so disappointed but it makes sense looking at their rating on yelp and Google both around 3 stars. We order from work all the time and the food is getting better. We have a lot of orders at once so they're pretty good at handling it. Have been getting the combo which comes with either a quarter chicken or a half chicken with some rice and salad or fries. Chicken is mostly good pretty juicy and Pretty flavorful. Last t we also got this beef and onions combo with rice and it was also very good. When you get a half chicken it also comes with a really really big salad so that was nice. Overall the food is good but the green sauce is to die for! It is tangy but spicy, soo good. read more

This past weekend we came un in a Saturday and were told oh by the way we have no rice and weren't giving any substitutes. We ordered the Peruvian seafood rice and the half chicken combo. Wow. That has to be the most moist chicken I've ever had! The salad that came with it was dressed just right. The fries could've been substituted for something else though. My husband is doing his best to skip rice, but that Peruvian fried rice is just divine!!! He kept taking some from my plate! Hahaha. You can't beat the price. This is a go-to stop for lunch for me and my co-workers. It's nice and cozy inside and always a lot of seats. Service is usually a combo of two guys but they always hustle and work hard to get the food out. The standard is the roto chicken combos which are a great deal. Starting at $7 for a quarter chicken combo and two sides are a steal. Even a $13 half chicken deal with two full sides is even better. You can always rotate in yellow or white rice, salads, fries, or madras (plantains) as sides. So the secret sauce of the place is the secret sauce. The "green sauce" or "Pio-pio" type sauce or Green Peruvian Aji sauce packs a punch and is more than a compliment to the appetizer chips. Pour that over the chicken or sides and its a flavor that is distinct and wakes you up. I've ordered all over the menu besides the chicken and all have been solid dishes with great portions and crazy flavor. Take-out is also an option at lunch and dinner. read more

A large group of us met here for dinner on Friday as one of our friends highly recommended the place. This location is very new, opening only a few months ago. I think most people haven't discovered it yet so we mostly had the restaurant to ourselves. We left the ordering to our friend who had been here before and he just went wild ordering a variety of dishes. For main courses we had ceviche, lomo saltado (beef with peppers and onions over french fries and rice), seafood fried rice, jalea (mixed fried fish and seafood), and fried plantains. All of us remarked on how good the fried dishes were. They weren't greasy at all and the fried rice was some of the best I've had. The ceviche was delicious too, with tender seafood and just the right amount of lemon juice. The food is quite inexpensive which made me leery about the quality but it definitely exceeded my expectations. I'm looking forward to going back and trying even more of their dishes. read more

"Service" is not the correct word to describe the way that Don Alex brings food to diners. Another really negative thing is that this place (along with way too many other restaurants) does NOT list prices on it's website "menu." A menu has prices on it, not just pictures and names of various dishes. A menu on a restaurant website needs PRICES, Don Alex, so that potential diners can decide whether they think a place is worth going to. We chanced upon this place when we were actually on our way to another restaurant for lunch and boy did we not have any regrets. Now I am not familiar with Peruvian food at all so I can't comment on it authenticity but I can tell you that whatever we put into our mouth then sure tasted darn good. We didn't order their famous roast chicken (which every other table was ordering) only cos we were roasting a chicken ourselves for dinner that night but here was what we had: Appetizer: - Tortilla chips with green sauce (complimentary as starter): the green sauce was so addictive that we ate it with everything and the server was kind enough to generously refill and later offer us a big bowl of sauce without us asking. - Seafood ceviche: fish, squid, shrimps perfectly marinated with just the right amount of lemon for that bursting freshness in your mouth) - Mixed seafood soup: A huge bowl of clams, mussels, shrimp, squid, fish in a rich broth. They served it with rice which I'm not certain if it was the norm or because they somehow knew I had plan on having it as my main but really this is a meal on its own. Mains: - Peruvian fried rice: We had initially ordered it with chicken but the server recommended to order it with both beef and chicken and this was so so good!! Rice was fluffy but had that slightly burnt taste that could only be achieved through a really hot fire and a big wok. By the time we got to that, we were stuffed!! - Fried green plaintain with special garlic sauce (sides): this is a side dish that we ordered and for $3, we were given a generous amount of plaintain and the lemony garlic sauce was to die for too. We would usually order desserts after the meal but we were so full by then. We will be sure to try it the next time we go back as they do have a wide range of desserts at very reasonable prices. I read some of the reviews below (albeit the older ones) that the service here was terrible but I beg to differ. The service staff were the best that I had seen in ages as they anticipated your needs without you having to ask them. They were familiar with the menu and very importantly, they could actually make recommendations on their food rather than giving you that annoying "everything is good" answer. I've been coming here so many times, i loved the roasted chicken and the green sauce. quality of chicken is always on point. The reason i only give 2 stars because of the service! I think the owner or the management of this place are very cheap or either don't know how to run this business. How comes its only one person working doing tables, casher, order taker, pick up service & everything. If you think your saving money by having less staff i think your wrong because your loosing busness by letting your patron waiting for very long time to be serve and even acknowledge! every time i come here its eather pick up or on the tables we have to wait for long time, because the only 1 server that serving everyone is running like chicken without head. Went to dinner here one evening around 8pm, there were no other tables. I actually went to their website and found some coupons, but didn't realize it had expired until we got the check. The ceviche was overly pungent, and the seafood was actually previously cooked, rather than "cooked" in acid as ceviches are supposed to be. We also ordered fried seafood platter, that included calamari (and more ceviche!) but there was too much breading on the seafood. Nonetheless, the rotisserie chicken was the highlight of the night, it was juicy and well-seasoned. This is a great quick stop for authentic cuisine. The only problem is the other location is staffed better and provides a warmer setting, that close knit feeling you get eating with a large family. This place gets a lot of customers for pick up only so be prepared to see your meal interrupted by the host/waiter running back and forth. Same great food however, the other location has live music. One of my favorite Hispanic places to eat. I usually eat at the Union location but, there was 10 of us so we came to this location. My faves from here: The spicy green sauce- spicy, creamy, with a cilantro and lime flavor. Jalea: the fried seafood is always on point. The dish is mostly calamari, tilapia, shrimp, mussels, and yucca. The dish is topped with a delicious cilantro lime onion salad. Honestly, I eat everything with the green sauce. Chicha morada (purple drink): It's sweet-tangy with what tastes like apple and lemon. Salad- Wait! I know what you're thinking.. salad.. really? But yes. I've grown up in a household that is big on seasoning. Cilantro and lime go along way on a salad and transforms regular salad into a flavor jet packed, savory, gotta-eat-it-all, mixture of veggies that just happen to be a salad. Seafood fried rice: Can I tell you that this is one of the best fried rice dishes that I've ever had? Okay well, it is.. It's tasty and exceeded my expectations. Well seasoned food, friendly staff, not crowded. The place is kind of hidden compared to all the bright lit places on Rt.22. This place introduced me to Peruvian food.
