This was our second time eating here. The first time, we dined in the storefront section, which is very bare-bones with just a few tables. Even so, the food and service were great. Recently, we discovered that there's a much larger part of the restaurant in the back, accessible through the alley off the main street via the rear parking lot. The space is decorated with Peruvian art and vibrant colors. To start, we ordered anticuchos (grilled beef heart skewers). The marinade is packed with delicious. I honestly thought I was eating steak. I ordered the chupe de camarones (shrimp chowder soup). I cannot stress enough how big this bowl of soup is. They do not skimp on the shrimp! It's probably one of the best chupes I've ever had. I ended up taking a large container of it home. Likewise, my partner ordered the chaufa mixto (Peruvian fried rice with chicken, steak, and shrimp). Always ask for the green sauce, absolutely delicious! Just like with my soup, he also had plenty of leftovers. To wash it all down, we ordered chicha (a purple corn drink), which was so good. This place is known for its rotisserie chicken, so we ordered a half chicken to go for the following day. I understand why it's everyone's go-to here, juicy and flavorful. Make sure to come here on an empty stomach! The portion sizes are out of this world, humongous! The server was so sweet explaining to us what each dish was. The inside is very cute, warm, welcoming and has plenty of seating. I ordered the lomo entraña and it was ok. The steak was tender but the potatoes (fries) lacked salt and crispiness, which was a total bummer! The white rice was also a bit hard. My husband ordered the churrasco steak-delicious and so were the yuca fries! Nice and crispy!! HUGE portion! Haven't gone in a while. And they reminded me why. Food was good! Service was worse than ever! After being seated for a while the waiter finally comes to take our order. After saying the first item in our order (leche de tigre) he asked "anything else". Facepalm* how is that enough for a family of 5?? After taking our food order we started telling him what we wanted to drink. He said he would come back. Never did. The very nice food runner starts bringing out food. We ended up asking him for drinks... never came to see how food was or if we needed anything. They gave us 2 of the green hot sauces for our large order. Had a friend's night and got Hugo's for takeout. We had Steak, shrimp fried rice, rotisserie chicken, and fried fish. The shrimp fried rice was amazing. It wasn't overly salty and the dish was seasoned very well. The chicken was pretty decent. The steak was one of my favorites as well. It was tender, seasoned great, and went well with the shrimp fried rice. The fried fish wasn't a fan favorite, however. If you are in the mood for Peruvian food look no further. The entrance to the restaurant is in the back of the building you can use the side alley way to get there. They have a very nice outside section, however couldn't eat there, there was no space for my party of 6. Let me tell you, you will not leave here hungry in fact you might have lunch for two days. I was in the mood for Peruvian food and decided to stop by this spot. I ordered the Tallarin saltado de pollo over the phone and the man said it would take 30 minutes. When I arrived I had to park illegally because parking isn't great in the area. I walked in and was greeted. I told the man my name and he said it wasn't ready yet. I waited about another 10 minutes or so and paid about $14 for a large tray. When I got home I dug in and the meal was good. It was seasoned so well and there was plenty. Hugo's is a nice Peruvian restaurant with really large portions and pleasant outdoor seating. The outdoor area is enjoyable, but beware--if you see most people sitting inside, the service outside tends to suffer. Unfortunately, we didn't receive the best attention while dining outdoors. Also, double-check your receipts. I was double charged, and after talking to a few others, I've realized this seems to be a recurring issue, which is frustrating and definitely not right. The staff seemed annoyed when I politely asked for extra green sauce and corn nuts--honestly, that's the least you can do to ensure a good dining experience. We had ceviche, steak with onions (Lomos saltado), bistek with linguini (green pasta), and Peruvian chicken. Everything was SUPER DELICIOUS AND FRESH!!! NOT salty. It was made with the right amount of flavor! It was definitely made with love! LOL.. we ate so much we had food coma after! The bistek with linguini was my absolute favorite. AND THE HOT SAUCE!!! That green sauce for the chicken or bistek is AMAZING!! I would highly recommend this place! When the food came, we were shocked at the amount we received. Total bill was about $70.00. I ordered guess what? ceviche and my family other dishes the waitress was not nice at all. It was like we had the obligation to be there and wait for her as much as she wanted. My family finished their food and by the time other 4 tables were served, my ceviche never came, and I noticed that my ceviche went to other table which was waited by the same waitress. After seeing such amazing reviews I was excited to try them out. But unfortunately, it was a horrendous experience. I Ordered my food at 5:05pm for delivery. I ordered papa ala huancaina, tallarien and arroz chaufa esepcial, he said thank you it would be done in 30 -45mins. It's now 6:24pm and my delivery has still not been received. I called the store 6 times and the call was going straight to voicemail. Finally, I was able to speak to the gentlemen, I asked him for an eta since it's been over an hour and half that I've been waiting for my delivery. Evidently, as soon as he called the driver the food arrived. He gently apologized for the inconvenience and the long wait. As I opened the tray of food I noticed it was lukewarm. The tray of arroz chaufa especial had no shrimp, so after gently triple checking I only found 3 shrimps. Given the fact that I waited almost two hours for my food and it arrived lukewarm I was upset. So I took the tray of rice and went back into the restaurant. Upon my arrival I asked to speak to the manager, The young lady rolled her eyes at me and left to get her. After 6 mins of waiting, the alleged manager, Soriylla asked me what was going on. I told her I was upset I got my food almost two hours later after placing it. I then proceeded to tell her the tray of rice only had 3 shrimps- so I just wanted a refund for the entire dish because this isn't a true tray if there's only 3 shrimp. She confronted me and said in Spanish "what are you talking about which dish," I repeated myself to her telling her I ordered the arroz chaufa especial. She then corrected me and said listen let me speak, we have arroz chaufa mixto or especial and I told her that one the last one. She looked at me and said to me again, let me finish. She was unmannerly, uncultured and impertinent. She asked me do you want a refund or us to make it again, I told her no please I want a refund. She said okay I will be right back. She goes into the kitchen and loudly speaks to the chef and told him what was going on. There was a lot of commotion and yelling in the kitchen. The "manager" comes back and says I spoke to the chef and we will not give you a refund you have to take it as is. I look at the tray and my food was scrambled and tossed around like if I was some dog. I immediately told her I was not taking this like this after they touched it. She said sorry Mami this is how it is you have to take it. I told her no and asked for a refund. She fought with me once again so I left the tray. For one, we're in a pandemic so being sterile should be your number one priority. Two, I refuse to accept food if it's been played with. Here's some feedback to the owner, your management team should have better edicate, if a customer complains about something don't fight back with them. Take the food back, apologize and 86 it. I've worked in restaurants for over 10 years so trust me I know how it works. I'm extremely disappointed because this has been worst review I have ever left on Yelp. I'm sorry but for me this restaurant is a hard pass. If you eat in, the take-out consumers are the priority. I walked over 30 minutes for basically rice and steak, never came out. One of our guest received their food within minutes and had finished it all while we waited. Unfortunately they don't know how to control the back of the kitchen and so the customer suffers. Also if you are going to make people wait that long, the tiny corn snack should be a tiny bit bigger, you would think? Unfortunately their customer service is terrible and they don't care if you are waiting and hungry. As their take-out is king, you will be reminded that this is how they are set up. These aren't just attitude of the servers but also the management. Ask for water, or diet coke, they will only have bottled water for $1.50 and no diet coke. With so many other Peruvian restaurant out there, I am sharing this so others can avoid an aggravating time. Finally we went to other shop in the downtown, and we were told by the owner of the shop she has waited over 45 minutes for her take-out. Ridiculous! I am a 17 year old Peruvian American. As someone who has tried many Peruvian restaurants, this is absolutely my favorite and my favorite restaurant in general. The flavors are extraordinary and the staff are all so kind and helpful. I come here with my family all the time and we all love it. This really is a 2 star review, but the food quality and portions bumped it up slightly. Hugo's restaurant specializes in authentic Peruvian cuisine and in that respect they get high marks. The menu was extensive and there were many dishes that were new to me, despite having tried numerous Peruvian dishes over the years. We ordered a variety of dishes to try and they hit the nail on the head! The flavors, the portions and presentations were all great! Where I found the restaurant to be severely lacking was unfortunately no service whatsoever! I mean if you check on my meal at least once I'm usually fine with that. Not one server checked on us during the entire meal while I watched servers chatting up the entire dining room, providing service to everyone else except us. Now mind you there was a language barrier that was in place as the whole waitstaff was communicating in Spanish. However, I speak a good deal of Spanish and my Puertorican wife speaks fluent Spanish so that couldn't be the excuse. Even as we were finishing up I was pushing plates to the side, servers walked past us multiple times and sadly nothing. I just felt pretty disappointed because while the meal was excellently prepared and appropriately priced, we left the restaurant very puzzled?? Like what did we do to receive treatment like that?
