We were looking for a pool contractor to do some repair work on recurring leaks in our beach entry and water features, as well as to diagnose and resolve an electrical problem with our pool lights. Our first contact was made with Dominion Pool based on viewing their add in our local neighborhood newsletter (Bentwater Life). Our first contact was made on a "walk-in" basis at their location in Montgomery. We found Dan and Debbie Pendley to be very knowledgeable and professional about swimming pools and responsive to addressing our problems. They came out to our house, discussed our concerns, and provided us with a timely estimate of the work and costs associated with doing our repairs. We agreed on a time frame for completing the work and the final product was delivered on time and within budget. The quality of Dominion's work was excellent; the flagstone masonry work in and around the beach entry was outstanding; and all repairs were completed to our full satisfaction. A small amount of background... My wife and I have been married 45 years. This is the tenth home we have owned together. We have engaged in numerous renovation/construction projects in that time, many of which we were able to complete ourselves with no assistance from outside contractors. When we do require professional assistance, we read reviews, place value in references and receive a minimum of three bids for a project before signing a contract. This pool, our first, we contacted and were working with four designers/pool builders. Dominion rather easily won our respect and the job. Marc (designer) was great to work with from the very beginning. We very quickly established an easy working relationship. He was receptive to our questions and changes as we developed the design of our dream pool. He was responsive to phone calls, emails and texts, sometimes late into the evening. We signed the contract May 17th, after several weeks of visits, changes and decision making. As I said, this was our first pool and we didn't want to rush into it. It took three more weeks before excavation started due to other projects being completed. Once the excavation started, there were several issues that affected the job. An inch and a half of rain on excavation day set the tone for the rest of the project. We endured issues with heavy rainfall, wall collapse, extreme heat as well as Hurricane Beryl. We were informed at the time that we signed the contract to expect 8-10 weeks of construction, start to finish. We know that this was just an estimate, but the job finished (more or less) on day 147. The rating for Dominion is based on our interactions with the builder alone. The individual subcontractors were all wonderful to work with. To be fair, I would like to individually rate the varied aspects of the job. Design - Marc was great to work with. He gave us what we wanted before we knew what we wanted. Five stars for design. He has since left the company. Subcontractors - Terrific group of people from start to finish. There was always someone onsite that was easy to communicate with, and all were very professional. Five stars for the contractors for their execution from plan to finished product. Dominion - Without a doubt the worst experience we have ever had with a construction project. Communication with the Project Manager Matthew was sporadic at best. Because of a perceived issue with our sun ledge that I didn't fully understand and was never explained to me (almost 8 weeks into the job), there was an extended period of time that Matthew would not return our calls or texts (numerous) and Debbie (owner) outright refused to speak with me. (Franco, the tile contractor, resolved the issue very elegantly to our satisfaction. That may have been the plan all along, but there was NO communication from Dominion after several attempts). This was just the beginning of what turned out to be several stalls in the job progress, all of which included a variety of excuses as well as periods of no communication on Dominion's part. Again, to be clear, this was our first pool. We were very upfront with all at Dominion about that. We were very clear that we would be asking a lot of questions and, most importantly, that communication was very important to us. In a rare instance of communication, Debbie informed my wife that every season they had one job where nothing seemed to go according to plan. Whether or not this is accurate, we were that customer. I can go in to great detail on the progress of the job start to finish if requested, but the bottom line is that the negatives outweigh the positive aspects of our choice of working with Dominion. If you are someone who can remain uninvolved in a project like this and the finished product is your only concern, I feel that you will be very happy with this company. To be fair, this review is not coming from someone that is capable of that. When all is said and done, Dominion built a beautiful pool for us using quality materials and contractors. I do understand that Dominion experienced some cost overruns on our build. Some were their own doing and some were unexpected and unfortunate, but the way that they have chosen to handle those issues as well as us as customers has been a major disappointment to me. I expected more from them considering the financial cost of this job. I very much resent being made to feel like the 'bad guy' here when all we wanted was for the agreed upon project to be finished in a timely manner according to our contract. They do not respond to repeated complaints and numerous phone calls. We tried to have a rational discussion about how bad their subcontractors are but they did not care. Shelley came out July 23, 2020 to bid on a new pool for us. She was super nice and seemed really excited and kept saying I have so many ideas. I sent her a text on August 2nd asking if the proposal was ready and she said she was out of town with family in Indiana and would return on Wednesday and schedule a meeting. Wednesday rolled around and nothing. I sent her a message on August 21st saying I never heard back from you so I guess you guys are no longer interest in bidding on our pool? She said she was so sorry that she tested positive for Covid 10 days ago but would be back in the office week after next after her follow up test. Well, it's September 8th and I never heard back from her. I know this is a family owned business and I'm sure her parents will be happy to know they lost a job because of their daughter. We found Dominion Pool Group by their website, and Yelp reviews here that raved about them. We designed, planned and ordered our pool build with them. We began talks in October of 2020 and began in earnest with them about 4/1/2021. The project ran late due to labor issues and Covid supply delays, we understood that and was not a problem. The problems arose and kept on multiplying by the time the pool was 1/4 done. They gave us a pool I mistakenly signed off on with their Docusign-like web application, where our agreed-upon pool I have a contract copy of, specifying a 36' maximum length, had been cut down to a 34' length without warning. Since my signature copy arrived online just 32 hours after my final approved copy still showing a 36' pool length, I signed it not knowing they knocked it back down to 34'. We paid the contracted price for a 36' pool however. This was a lot of pool we lost for our agreed-upon price. They gave us 5 Stepping concrete pads to help make up for it. Then we had pool equipment dumped on the side of our new home build for about 2 months, and I pleaded with them to place it inside the locked garage, as some thefts of new home items were reported in the area. They refused to do so, and our builder was coordinating with them to be helpful too. About a week before we moved in, sure enough, about $1,600.00 of our equipment was stolen out of the rain-drenched mess of boxes on the side of our house. I had even offered to drive up to our new property on 3 occasions to lock it all away myself, for their contractors, and they urged me not to, just leave it in a rain-soaked pile of disintegrating cardboard on the side of our new house and lot. It got worse from there. Scheduled appointments for finishing the pool went delayed for another month after 3 promised dates scheduled by their main office. The deck painting was done in the rain, and some resultant dirt got into the paint finish and now won't clean out. They lost most of the pool dig dirt and left our inground pool mostly above ground and badly exposed at the back of the pool, claimed all the 40K metric feet dirt was put back around the pool, into a about a 15K dirt fill-in area, and we have photos showing where the dirt was and where it disappeared from, before the pool fill-in was even done. We had a 3rd-party engineer have to confirm this. (Even though common sense of hugely disproportionate physical volumes were obvious.) It appears to have been hauled off or smoothed-out across our back lawn instead of being mounded-up around our pool as it should have been. We have photos. Their contractors left excess concrete chunks in another private lot in the area, getting us into a little trouble with the local POA, but this they did correct after our POA head called them directly. They did not install our pools top solar lights as promised, they did not fix damaged coping as promised, and we had to re-purchase all of our stolen equipment as well. Matt and Shelley at DPG were very nice and tried hard to satisfy us, but DEBBIE there, denied all faults, responsibility, blamed and spun in any other direction but their own. The amount of sheer lying and dishonesty out of her is most repulsive and never-ending. I see a 'Chuck K.' has as similar review on here about them. He setup his pool, by the date of his post here that is almost the same time we began working with DPG too. I would work with Shelley and Matt again, but DPG? NO WAY. This one is probably going to court. We have our case well-drafted and ready to file at the time of this posting. We have photos, hard documentation, witnesses and a couple of their own contractors' statements to boot at this point, and officially, DPG denies everything, even stuff this Debbie person claimed herself. They may have once been a great pool company, they are no longer worth anyone's time. read more

I just happened to look at the yelp reviews for Dominion Pool Group who built our pool a couple of years ago and was shocked to see the three reviews about this fantastic company. One of the pictures listed is the pool that Dan and Debbie helped us design. From our point of view dealing with Dominion is the exact opposite experience that was stated with some of the other reviews. We live in Grand Harbor in Montgomery Tx where Dominion is domiciled out of. If you have ever had a swimming pool built there is alot to know and understand. Dan's depth of knowledge and endless attention to detail were the exact reasons that helped us decide on what company to go with. To this day Dominion has been there for us when other pool companies of friends and neighbors only do exacltly what they say they are going to do (Nothing up and above). One example during the freeze we had in Feb 2020. I don't know what we would have done without Dan and Debbie helping us through and getting our back yard paradise back in order before spring. I can not speak for the other reviewers but call Dan or Debbie if you have any concerns about using them and have them put you in contact with the Smith's in Montgomery or if you would like to come by and see the pool have Dan bring you by. The only reason I say that I was suprised to see these reviews is because when we were making our decision we used google and nothing but good things were being said. I noticed that one of the reviews came out of California and was wondering if they may have gotten Dominion confused with another company. Dominion to my knowledge only builds in Montgomery Tx. Debbie was instrumental in helping us design the pool and deck area and Dan was very impressive with regard to his knowledge and commitment to quality construction and hydraulics.
