Visited this facility on a cruise ship excursion. They offer dolphin, manatee, and sea lion encounters. I did the manatee and sea lion encounters and found the experience absolutely amazing. I was hesitant to go because I know that many companies like this aren't very humane to the animals. After visiting, I can't speak credibly about how this specific company is with the animals. However, I was happy to see that the dolphins and manatees were in large ocean-based pens. Also, the first manatees my group got in the water with weren't in the mood to interact. The tour operator moved our group to different manatees- definitely the right move to not force them. Some of the things I did in addition to the animal encounters were, 1- watch the sea lion show, 2-swim in their pool, 3- eat at the Dolphin View restaurant. All three of those were solid. In particular, hopping in the pool after visiting the sea lion habitat which didn't feel super clean (but was probably appropriate for the animals). The food at Dolphin View was good. Not mind blowing, but was included in the tour and included margaritas (yum!). There is a rental fee for lockers and the experience/cost of buying photos is horrible (as I anticipated). The photo packages are exorbitantly priced. However, they are somewhat negotiable if you begin to walk away. You aren't allowed to take your own photos. So, be ready to pay if you want them! Also, bring sandals or water shoes if you are visiting with dolphins or manatees. The ground is hot and the deck is splintery. Also, it is a long walk and you can leave your sandals on the dock. The ocean based in-water landing is slick, mossy, and is rough on your feet. So, water shoes are a great move if you want extra protection. Overall, I liked my visit and will cherish getting to interact with the animals. The interactions were long and there were multiple photo ops with the animals. We booked the excursion in Cozumel through our cruise a year ago. Our only issue was, we booked it for both Dolphin and Manatee but somehow it changed to only Manatee (this was a Royal Caribbean issue, we were pretty disappointed in the lack of communication with the cruise line). Once we arrived at the port, we were placed in a taxi to Chankanaab. When we got there, our tour guide walked us through what to expect, and we all changed into our swimwear. They had lockers available for use, for free! We met manatees Angel and Josie, they were so gentle and sweet. We even got to feed them lettuce, which was such a fun moment for my kids. Two years ago, we did a different excursion with dolphins and my daughter was terrified of the splashing. This one felt way more kid friendly and calm. I definitely recommend it for families with younger kids, especially if they don't like salt water splashing all over them. The excursion also included access to the pool, unlimited food and drinks, and snorkeling. You do need to rent gear if you didn't bring your own. The line for food was long and no wet clothes were allowed inside. I had to get in line multiple times to bring food for my family. The service was amazing though. Israel kept our drinks coming. We had a wonderful time at Dolphin Discovery. We booked our trip through "Shore Excursions" not the cruise ship. We did the Royal swim which included time with the dolphins and a chance to meet the manatees. Lockers and lunch were also included in the Royal Swim. They told us to go and grab a life vest. Definitely do wear some shoes as the ground can get hot. After we got our life vest, then it was a little confusing about when we would get to go. We sat at the waiting area. We ended up starting around 20 minutes late. The staff wasn't really very clear during that waiting period as to what was happening. The experience itself was of course fantastic! Plan on buying the pictures. :) They are definitely worth it and when will be the next time you get this opportunity. Very mixed feelings. First we booked this through Royal Caribbean Cruise line(RCL) for our New Year Eve cruise. It's under the Dolphin Swim & Experience - all inclusive. Get booked this early to get a "discount" - 2 Adults and 1 kids was $356.97. I don't think there was a price difference between adults/kids. This organization is pretty well organized for as many people as they herd through to see the dolphins - literally herd. Finding where to go when disembarking the ship was pretty easy. There are clearly marked zones. We were greeted by our handler Omar. He was nice, spoke English well. He wasn't overly clear and concise on all the instructions or times. Sometimes giving 2 pieces of different information in a matter of a few minutes or giving incorrect information. I think perhaps it's because of the amount of information he gave to you. I'll start with the easy part - the all inclusive. The food was a C- at best. They had multiple "restaurants". We were allowed to eat in the VIP on which is upstairs, but make no mistake - the food was all the same. They did have all you can drink booze. They had a pretty decent beer and bottom shelf liquor. They also had soft drink from a 2 liter. You also had access to a nice private beach, sea lion show and some Mayan ruin replicas. Once the dolphin excursion started, they were fast and efficient. Herding people in and out. We were able to pet the dolphin, give it a kiss( for the camera), be pushed on a boogie board, and ride it. While people were swimming out, that is when the minor touch point occurred. Hindsight, I feel terrible for the dolphins. Not gonna lie it was cool to get so close and personal, but the dolphins are basically slaves working all day on these excursions. They do provide a living for many locals, and appear well kept. They are not in an aquarium, rather they are fenced into the ocean. I think the thing that frustrated me the most was they were watching folks like hawks not to take pictures. Absolutely no phones or cameras. The reason for this is they wanted to see you an all-inclusive photo package for $185 or $285 - I forget. They were rather rude on this. I didn't realize this at first and got "caught" and they were pretty rude in it. Ended up buying in picture for $40. And it wasn't even a print. It was a digital download and you had to download their app. So if you wanna get pictures, get a high zoom camera and go for high ground. It's unfortunate that you gotta spend at least 500+ dollar for 3 to capture all the memories. read more

The dolphins get five stars but the photo scam gets negative stars , I did not haggle hard so I paid regular price which was $140 for 41 digital photos for two people ... other members in tour were able to get price down after haggling ... they should just post a fair price that everyone pays so that doesn't leave people feeling ripped off and feeling annoyed. Do you like highway robbery?! This place is an absolute ripoff. For my family and I, we purchased a dolphin swim package of about four hundred dollars. Experience was very rushed. The facilities, including the locker room, were dirty and not well maintained. We also I paid for the buffet which was refried beans and melted cheese and some old and disgusting watermelon. So here's the kicker. I wanted a photo of my son with the dolphins. They are charging forty dollars for each photo!!! So far our family, The cost of the photos would have been more than the actual cost of the experience at about five hundred dollars!!! I've had experience with other another dolphin swims in cancun. There, they charge ten dollars or so for a printed photo with a frame. So the cost here is four hundred percent more, and they don't print the photo or give you a frame or give you anY type of discounted pricing. So if you like a place that takes advantage its customers and has exorbitant prices with terrible food and poorly kept facilities you have found the perfect place. read more

Cozumel Chankanaab was great, plenty to see and do. The food was amazing and servers were great. Do not do the Dolphin Discovery though. We paid for a dolphin swim. They didn't tell us under 6 couldn't do the swim just the interaction. So the waves were a little rough that day so I couldn't hold my grandson becuase I'm not very big so my husband couldn't do the swim or even the interaction. So went to customer service let them know that my husband didn't get to participate at all becuase helping my grandson. I even offered to just get the difference in refund for the interaction with dolphin for my husband even though he didn't get to participate in the swim or interaction and they wouldn't even give me that. Then when you get photos they are very pushy and when they take photos at the swim they hurry through them. So didn't get to do much on Chankanaab becuase of dealing with customer service and photo people. Would not recommend to anyone lost a lot of money. read more

Easy 10 minute taxi ride from port, simple check in process, gorgeous beach and snorkeling and the dolphin VIP Royal Swim was everything we ever hoped for!! 10/10 recommend and would book again in a heartbeat. Interesting place. I'll break this review in to 2 parts. Part 1 being the dolphin experience. Part 2 will be everything outside of that. Part 1 - The dolphin experience was straight up amazing. The care takers worked real hard to make the experience memorable for everyone. Even those who were scared of the dolphins (5y/o, etc). I can't say anything outside of how cool it was to be able to interact with the dolphins AND manatee's. Was it worth the cost of admission? IMO - yes. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Part 2 - Everything outside of the dolphin experience is where they get you. Brace yourself for this part. The pictures is where this place really makes their money. They do not allow pictures anywhere that would allow you to create your own memory. The first thing they will try to sell you on is the 'album'. The album with a family picture will be a whopping $245 (as of Jan - 2020). We chose not to go that route. However, when you get out, they will then lead you to a station that will have all your pictures available for viewing. From there, if you want to digitally download everything, it'll cost $210. Basically - if you want some pictures, it'll be at least $200. Food - I didn't go the whole "VIP" experience as others did but the buffet is a very basic buffet that just 'works'. I took advantage of the free beers and just called it. I wasn't here for a big fancy meal so I just called it what it was - food that'll process in my body for sustenance. I am so sorry to see a bunch of whiners. I absolutely love going there, and have swam with the dolphins, stingrays and manatees. They are treated extremely well, and most have been rescued. This is nothing like Sea World, and to compare it in any way is ridiculous. If you felt so strongly about cages and all, why did you book this excursion? Complaining and whining about something you forgot to do, by you not returning the key is so dumb! This was your fault, and if you would had phoned them, I am sure they would had worked something out with you. Bad experience, we don't pay this prices in San Diego, dolphins should not be aloud to live in cages, it wasn't even safe for my 7 yr old since waves were super strong, floor was slippery and you have to hold on to a metal fence, they ask you for your ID to use one of their lockers and to make sure they get back the key people forget to drop off the key it happen to us and wife didn't realize till we we're heading back to playas del Carmen, had to take the first Ferry back the island take 2 taxis to pick up my ID and return the dam key but I was shock, shock they pull a metal box with at least 200 Mexican and USA ID I was not the only one and they should ask for a $15 to $20 dollar deposit to replace the dam key just like other places we went to. This place used to be our fave but with COVID there were less things you can do with the animals. When we visited in 2019 we were given time in the water (off fence) to feed the manatees and 'swim' with them for 5-10 min. Now, less interaction & no swim time at all. I just returned from a scuba trip to Cozumel. Dolphin Discovery was walking distance from our hotel. I stopped in with my kids assuming the encounter dolphin experience would be visiting dolphins in the ocean. Instead I saw small netting enclosures where these highly intelligent animals are kept day and night. The ocean is right beyond their enclosures but these poor dolphins will only spend their days performing for people. If you spend money here your keeping them locked up. read more

We were on a cruise ship, so we had limited time at the park. We would have loved to stay longer because we were having so much fun! The park was very nice with lots to do. I HIGHLY recommend purchasing the encounter that includes the photos in advance online (or over the phone to see if you can get a better rate). If you wait until after the encounter to purchase the photos it is is soooo expensive! We purchased the VIP Dolphin Royal Swim w/Memories pkg. The buffet was just so-so food, but the drinks were great. If you have snorkel gear, bring it and snorkel on your own at the beach. Lots of fish to see. Our time with the dolphins was adequate, and the kids loved the experience (as did the adults). This experience was a vacation highlight for sure! read more

We we're told the VIP premium food package included seafood and we're then told the package we paid for was a lesser package after paying for the package!! The dolphin interaction was nice, but be ready for the sales to begin. You can't take a go pro or camera, the whole interaction is photographed and they direct you to kiosk right as you leave the dock. We paid $89 pp to basically be walked through a pressure sales pitch. Food "included" was a picked over and dirty buffet area and the drinks included were watered down drinks or mini cups of cerveza. Was not impressed. Beach was nice. Pay the $12 pp entry fee and a $8 taxi ride and save some money. read more

This is how the dolphins live when no one is looking. Dolphins don't belong in tanks - they can swim up to 96 km/day, stay with their mothers for life, and even have their own name in the wild. They suffer here; they can do up to 15 of the same interactions each day. One dolphin's excrement is the same as 4-6 humans. These dolphins are forcibly bred, separated from their mothers, and confined all in the name of vacation entertainment. We booked swimming with Dolphins through shoreexcursionsgroup.com. Our travel agent said it would be cheaper to go through them then it would Royal Caribbean. We did have to pay for a taxi to get to Chankanaab but it was worth it. Once we got there they were able to move our time up from 2pm to 10:10am. Jaqueline (probably spelled wrong) was our dolphin guide and she was great. We had 3 kids in our party, ages 7,4 and 2 and she was very patient with them. Unlimited food and drink was included in our package. The food was a buffet and it was delicious! I was very nervous to try the food but it didn't disappoint. We ended up hanging out by the pool the rest of the day and watching the Sea Lion show. My kids LOVED the sea lions too. Overall, we will definitely be back. read more

I'm a weirdo. I think I'm one of the few people in the world really don't care that much about dolphins. I mean I don't dislike them, but I'm not like other people who seem to be enraptured by them. Other people like my kids and wife. So when we had the opportunity to do a short excursion on a recent cruise, doing a dolphin encounter seemed like a natural fit for fun. Our guide was Fernando, who is awesome. We followed Fernando's instructions and everything went well. Just a quick ride from the Port to the place. Plenty to see and do in the complex, way more than we had time for. The buffet was okay. The dolphin encounter was actually pretty cool. However what is absolutely not cool is the total and complete money grab at the end around photographs. They don't let you take photos on your own. But they have someone there taking 1 million photos a second while you're in with the dolphins. Do you want one photo? $40. Do you want two? $80. A skinny little book with about 20 pictures in it? $240. From the moment I was done with the dolphin encounter and entered what I will call photograph hell, the excursion went from five stars amazing to one star unbearable. So I'll settle with three stars. Should you do it? Should you go? Yes. But know that at the end the whole experience will nose dive badly. If you are ready for it it may not be so bad. read more

First, we got there early to avoid the gathering crowd arriving late morning. This place feels like Disneyland and will pack tourists in to the absolute limit. Second, it's not cheap to enter and have a 'dolphin experience' (varying costs depending on the experience) but the photos are a TOTAL RIP OFF. For each group they have a 'guide/photographer' bringing you to the platform where you'll meet the dolphin trainer and enter the water. Your Mexican guide will hover above you and shoot dozens of pictures that you'll later review when you return to the sales center. And here comes the HUGE surprise: these pictures (unprofessional though they are) will cost you roughly $55 apiece. To me, considering you pay roughly $100 for the experience in the first place, this pricing is GOUGING. Classic caveat emptor: let the buyer beware. SHAMEFUL. I can't understand why others who've rated this park haven't loudly complained about the same practice. EXTORTION. Third, the inclusive buffet wasn't something you'd wish to pay more than $5 in the States. The waiters, hustling drinks to your table, are expecting handsome tips in return--who can help them when you're already dropping money right and left? PITIFUL. Finally, the swimming area was so full of seaweed debris and crowded that only the brave or desperate attempted to go in. FILTHY Over all, this place searches for nearly every opportunity to pry $20 bills from your wallet--and leverages your 'dolphin experience' to similarly collect $50 bills. Way, way, way too expensive and opportunistic to return. I recommend looking for other dolphin encounters and skip this place. read more

Avoid at all costs! This place isn't even worthy of one star. My mother and daughter got injured on this excursion because the waves were too rough, throwing them against the rusty chain link fence. The trainer asked me to hold onto other people in our group in the water because of the rough conditions when I was trying to hold onto my 4 and 5 year old as well. The trainer was unsympathetic as the waves went over my children's heads frightening them. Their main concern was getting their photographs so you could pay $75 per person for your photo instead of helping a scared child out of the water. Extremely disappointed. Nice place to spend the day...we signed up for the dolphin encounter. It was an amazing experience! They do not allow you to take your own pictures...well because they take them for you and charge you an arm and a leg for it! (Pictures of one person for $70 or you pay $40 for ONE picture! You get to kiss, handshake, bellyride on the dolphin so how can you possibly just pick ONE picture???) Snorkeling was fun. The guide was VERY helpful after we told him that i couldnt swim and was afraid to. He let me hold on to the rescue buoy the whole time while he practically swam for me. My fiance and his son went scuba diving and they said it waa amazing! (Of course that was another package of pictures to pay for...) once in a lifetime right? When you first arrive they give you a ticket to get a free pendant or earrings aa a souvenir when you leave. Of course they neglected to tell you what time the store closed at the end of the day so we couldnt get ours. So that and the prices for the pictures was the reason it only got three stars from me...everything else was very nice. You also get a free ride back to the hotel! He was very upset that there were several small children in our group that could not swim and it slowed him down and he had to get a lifeguard to help. We had the Royal Swim, and it was one of the most amazing experiences of our lives. For my husband's birthday, we went swimming with the dolphins, a bucket list item for him. The experience was beyond anything I had imagined. The location is so beautiful that even before the dolphin swim, we were so relaxed and happy. Then we met our photographer (do not miss out on getting pictures of this experience!), who was absolutely fabulous. He introduced us to our dolphin swim experience guide, who took us on the adventure of a lifetime. Our guide explained everything clearly to the people in our group (there were only 6 of us so it was great individual experiences) both in English and Spanish. He introduced us to our dolphins, Apollo & Itanna, who were so adorable, but as different as could be. They had such individual personalities, it became easy to tell them apart! Once we began the interactions, and I couldn't stop grinning and laughing the entire time. Seeing my husband's face when he got his dolphin kiss and high five are moments I will never forget. Petting the dolphins bellies and seeing how my husband smiled, I could feel my own grin continuously grow. Then we got to do two big interactions with the dolphins, a fin tow and the foot push. Being pulled through the water by these majestic animals was something that just cannot be described in words...the best I can do is that it was exhilarating, mesmerizing, and life-changing. Then the dolphins pushed us by our feet until we were standing straight up, completely out of the water. The entire time, our guide was giving us guidance AND ensuring the dolphins were well cared for. Then we had a huge surprise: we got to pet the manatees! They are like 900 pound lap dogs! I thought that was the culmination, but after our encounter, we went up to the VIP lounge for lunch. The salmon was delicious, as was the RUM! My husband couldn't get enough of the paella! And the service was terrific. And just a little more about the service: from the moment we got out of the cab, everyone was so polite and helpful. From the person who gave us directions, to the ladies at the desk and in the shop, to the photographer and guide (who were super amazing), to our waiter and the chef and staff who came out to wish my husband a happy birthday, it was a five-star experience. read more
