This little thrift store is hidden behind Nate's Deli, in that old run down bingo hall sitting on…read moreMerivale Road. I pass it quiet frequently and always wanted to stop in, but it was never on the top of my priority list, especially with so many other thrift stores on that street. I had some Christmas items that I wanted to donate, and thought, this is my chance to check out Bibles for Missions. I could tell just from stepping up to the donation door that they bombarded with donations. The donation door was wide open and there were a couple of workers in the back, no greeting, acknowledgment, or thank you, so I plopped my donation down and decided to check out the store. The first thing that I noticed were the signs placed in the entrance "please leave big purses and bags at cash, we reserve the right to search your bag," and so on. Maybe there has been a lot of theft? Not sure, but it did not give me a friendly first impression. No greeting, or acknowledgment throughout the 15 minutes browsing the store, but there were plenty of staff on the sales floor for customer assistance/questions. I did not find that there was a great selection, it was like walking through grandmas basement. Nothing caught my eye here, and I was not "wowed" by anything in particular. What stands out about this thrift store than others, is that it is mostly volunteers, and the majority of the profit goes towards their partnership with the bible league of Canada. More information found on their website: http://www.bfmottawa.com/about-us Would I go back? Only to donate, not to shop.

Definitely the best thrift store in the city! Lots of quality merchandise at great prices…read more The store is well laid out and the staff are super helpful.

So there are 4 Hudson's Bay Company stores in Ottawa. This Bayshore location ranks #2 in terms of…read moreselection. (#1 is Rideau Centre. St. Laurent and Place d'Orleans are interchangeable for #3 and #4). The Bay (as most Canadians call it) at Bayshore and Rideau both have Opticals - the other Ottawa locations do not. If you wear glasses, don't overlook the Optical at The Bay, they have a good selection of frames. The one at Bayshore carries Milano 6769 Eyewear. Made in Italy (as the name suggests) and really funky styles. Their prices are really reasonable as well. The staff are friendly too. For fashions, The Bay at Bayshore is good. It's a smaller location than Rideau, but larger than St. Laurent or Place d'Orleans. The selection of formal and party dresses is much less than at Rideau. For purses they do carry a small selection of "Contemporary Brands" like Coach, but I haven't seen Kate Spade or Marc Jacobs, like at Rideau (St. Laurent and Place d'Orleans carry none of these brands). They have a very limited toy section, but their shoe department is a good size. The one thing that The Bay Bayshore has over The Bay Rideau is free parking, although the parking lot is a nightmare (which is the fault of Bayshore Mall management/owners for hiring the person/people who designed the parking lot and not the fault of The Bay - see my review of the Bayshore Shopping Centre for more details on my disdain for the parking lot, lol). The Bay is one of the few department stores that are still leftover from my youth (RIP Eatons, Simpsons, and Sears), so I'll always have a soft spot for it.

Uniqlo - inside

Uniqlo has finally opened in Bayshore! Uniqlo is a Japanese casual wear retailer, known for its…read morehigh quality clothing. The majority of clothing sold at this store is pretty much just wardrobe essentials; plain longsleeve tees, active zip ups, plain shirts, jackets, etc. This store is focused on the concept of "timeless basics" rather than chasing the current fashion trends. For some reason, I always thought this store was a lot cheaper than other stores but it turns out that unfortunately no, it is not. I bought a zip up for $50 and a plain longsleeve tee for $25. Not that it's expensive, just not a store that I would label as "cheap," but more "affordable." I love that this store is wide and spacious, and it didn't feel crowded even though the store was pretty busy. The coolest thing about this store, though? They have self-checkouts instead of a cashier, and not the normal self-checkouts you're used to, either. It's the kind where you place all your items into this bin, and then everything's instantly & automatically scanned. Then you pay and it prints out your receipt. Mind you, there was around 5 of these self-checkouts so there wasn't a line you had to wait in to pay for your items. Something to note: Uniqlo also has a Uniqlo app, where you have access to app-exclusive discounts and special items that aren't available in-store. I'd recommend downloading this app prior coming to the store, because the reception was weak when I tried to download it on-the spot. All in all, a great new clothing store to check out!

This is a shopping plaza that is anchored by Ikea. Therefore the parking lot is always a zoo, lol…read more There's a Corbeil Appliances, Linen Chest, Terra 20, Michaels, Chapters, Indigo, Structube, and Globo Shoes as well. I rarely ever go out there unless it's to go to Ikea. Food options in this plaza are the Ikea cafeteria, the Starbucks inside of Chapters, Subway Sandwiches, and Bridgehead Coffee. If you're looking for something a bit more, across the street there is another small strip mall with Big Rig Kitchen and Brewery, and Supreme Kabob House. The plaza is good if you're looking for appliances or house furnishings.

I dislike this mall, mostly for accessing it, and parking. Oh, and the size of the Ikea there…read more.. Biggest in Canada? Why would that be impressive? It is huge, and I feel like I'm being herded like cattle, just to get through the store. My biggest beef about that is I'd rather go to the section I'm looking for, rather than have to schlep through every single other department just to get there! By then I'm exhausted! Mind you, I thought it was big enough before they expanded! On the other hand, the times I have shopped at Ikea and actually bought something, I have to admit that their prices are great. Having said that I really don't like going to this mall, we have been going here occasionally, and more frequently than before (yes, for Ikea!). Aside from Ikea, we've gone to the Starbucks with some regularity. That's a calming force after a trek through Ikea! And when we go to Ikea, we always take a gander in the bookstore next door. I like that Chapters / Indigo a lot, although it's not my favourite one to get to. Sears used to have an appliance store there, when they were still in business. Didn't go there often. I don't like Corbeil (overpriced IMHO) as we've had bad luck shopping for appliances there. I used to go to the Michael's in this mall, before they opened up in Kanata; so now I never go to this Michael's store anymore. In general, I go to this mall only when I have to, and only to get done what I absolutely have to, and usually can't wait to get out. Two stars because I do actually occasionally shop there. Based on parking and access alone, I would give this mall a 1-star. By access, I'm including taking the bus there: they let you off at the intersection of the highway and Pinecrest, and you have to walk too far to get to the mall, crossing the highway entrance. I feel like it's taking your life in your hands! And it's too long a trek to get into the mall by foot, taking the same route you would take if you were driving. I'm not sure how you would make it better; maybe a footbridge?

Winners - I always find great things at winners. I wanted to share because of the recycling program that they have. Great job winners !!!

I am pretty sure that I've reviewed this location before, but now the review is gone (?) Anyway…read morey'all know that Winners is my favourite store ever and I've been to every single one in the National Capital Region and let me tell you, not all locations are equal. This one tends to be more picked over, and I generally find less deals here. Admittedly, since the Covid Pandemic I have been shopping at brick and mortar stores much less, but believe me, I did enough shopping in my pre-Pandemic life to know what I'm talking about, haha. So even though this location is not the best, that didn't prevent me from going there, but I generally liked it less. It does have a more extensive jewelry section than other locations and it's connected to a Homesense (Winners is upstairs and Homesense is downstairs). They have changed their layout a few times over the years, more than any other location, so I guess they are still trying to figure out what works. It's mostly the men's department that they've moved around, but as a result the women's athletic wear and "Mode" section for tweens/teens/twenty-somethings has moved around too. It's located inside the Bayshore Shopping Centre and it's about the same size and is as spread out as the regular free-standing stores (not the small and compact urban concept stores). Lots of free parking in the annoying mall parking lot (who designed that thing? Dead ends in a parking lot? WTF?!? But that's another story).

I think the employees have a hard time keeping up with the traffic in this store. Its not always busy, but its messy. I always see opened merchandise laying around the store, empty beauty boxes sitting on shelves, and lotions and soaps dripping because customers wanted to test them. The selection at this Winners is not amazing. Their jewelry is a miss as well as their accessories and purses. Their shoe selection leaves much to desire as well. It may all be personal taste, but I rarely find exciting items at this location. Maybe items get picked over quickly? Checkout is quick, and service is great! (This location is the only one that reminds me of my TJX card; which is a loyalty card where customers get an extended 30 day exchange policy, early access to items and exclusive contests)
