The Hudson Bay

The Hudson Bay

(13 reviews)

So there are 4 Hudson's Bay Company stores in Ottawa. This Bayshore location ranks #2 in terms of…read moreselection. (#1 is Rideau Centre. St. Laurent and Place d'Orleans are interchangeable for #3 and #4). The Bay (as most Canadians call it) at Bayshore and Rideau both have Opticals - the other Ottawa locations do not. If you wear glasses, don't overlook the Optical at The Bay, they have a good selection of frames. The one at Bayshore carries Milano 6769 Eyewear. Made in Italy (as the name suggests) and really funky styles. Their prices are really reasonable as well. The staff are friendly too. For fashions, The Bay at Bayshore is good. It's a smaller location than Rideau, but larger than St. Laurent or Place d'Orleans. The selection of formal and party dresses is much less than at Rideau. For purses they do carry a small selection of "Contemporary Brands" like Coach, but I haven't seen Kate Spade or Marc Jacobs, like at Rideau (St. Laurent and Place d'Orleans carry none of these brands). They have a very limited toy section, but their shoe department is a good size. The one thing that The Bay Bayshore has over The Bay Rideau is free parking, although the parking lot is a nightmare (which is the fault of Bayshore Mall management/owners for hiring the person/people who designed the parking lot and not the fault of The Bay - see my review of the Bayshore Shopping Centre for more details on my disdain for the parking lot, lol). The Bay is one of the few department stores that are still leftover from my youth (RIP Eatons, Simpsons, and Sears), so I'll always have a soft spot for it.

I would really like to mention that they are following all the proper social distancing rules for…read morecovid. Staff is really calm and co-operative. It's a one stop shop. You get great options and variety to choose from.

HomeSense - Front Exterior

HomeSense

I love this HomeSense. It's fairly large, and I always walk out buying at least one thing…read more The store offers a large selection of pictures, household wares, books, furniture as well as linens. It is hard not to find anything at HomeSense that is not priced reasonably. Like other reviewers have mentioned, since it is located on Merivale Road, it should be avoided on the weekends. Not only that but avoid this location on Monday's as well, the stock is usually low, and the store is left with all the "left overs" from the weekend, that did not sale. Usually give it a day or two for the staff to load up the shelves with new goodies after their weekend rush. Best time to shop is Tuesday-Friday in the evening or morning. Don't forget, interior decorators get a discount at HomeSense!!

I was looking for a marble grinder today and a friend of mine told me to check out Homesense on…read moreMerivale or Innes. My first stop was the Innes Homesense and then the Merivale Homesense. Minus the drive on Merivale the trip to Homesense was pretty good. This Homesense is massive! There are a lot of items at this store and like most Homesense's the stock changes weekly. There were a lot of items for the house, some nice, some awfully hard to look at! The good thing about this Homesense is that there are a lot of items for pretty reasonable prices. I'd recommend going on a weekday as Merivale seemed like a zoo today and I hear it's like that on weekends.

Loblaws - They have The Keg's Billy Miner Pie ice cream!

This is the Loblaws in Bells Corners. It's next to Zellers (one of two that are still in existence…read moreafter their massive closures; the other one is in Toronto's Kipling Queensway Mall btw). This Loblaws is medium-sized. It's not as big as the huge ones like the one at College Square, but it's bigger than the small ones like at Carlingwood Mall. This one has less prepared foods, but it does carry some random items that most other Loblaws don't carry, like Mediterra Savoury Protein bars. In fact, their protein bars selection is quite impressive. Their layout is not the best. They have their "discount/clearance/50% off" section on the other side of the cash register. So if you don't know that it's there, you only see it after you have paid for your groceries and are about to leave. So if you see something in the clearance section that you want, you have to go back in line to pay for it :P They really should move it, but I guess that's the only place they have for it (??). Also the aforementioned protein bars are found in 2 separate sections, one in the health food/nutritional supplements section and then they have some in a random "island display" in the middle of the refrigerated and frozen food section. It's in this random display that they have more "exotic" protein bars that I don't see in most grocery stores. Very weird. The prepared foods are also tucked away in scattered places. It took me a while to find the roasted chickens (towards the back of the store in a tiny section). Also one of the first things you see when you enter is the fish section (uh, not the most appealing...) Anyway, I am familiar with the idiosyncrasies of this location, so I like it, but some people may find the layout strange. Lots of free parking in the parking lot.

I've been going to this store for several years now but it's really gone downhill since the…read moreinstallation of "self-service" checkouts, which I refuse to use. Went in to pick up a few groceries after work. When I got to the checkout only two were open and both had long lines. Their express checkout was closed. So I skipped the checkout, left my groceries behind, and went to Sobeys instead. Sobeys had five checkouts open and, with my four items, I was processed through the express quickly. If you've got time on your hands and enjoy standing in the checkout line, this is the store for you. Come on Loblaws, Hire a few more students!

Robertson Centre - Anchor stores in this plaza are FreshCo, Dollarama, and Rexall.

Robertson Centre

Robertson Centre is a plaza in Bells Corners. The anchor stores are FreshCo, Dollarama, and Rexall…read morePharmacy. The Rexall is the biggest and nicest that I've ever seen. It even has a drive thru (!) - which I imagine is for dropping off and picking up prescriptions only, but I dunno, maybe you can go to the drive thru and say "I want a case of Pepsi, a bag of Lays BBQ chips, and a box of Oreos." I don't know! I've never used the drive thru at a drugstore, lol. The FreshCo is similar to other FreshCos, and the Dollarama is also pretty standard. There are a few dining options there: Mongolian Village Grill West, Gabriel Pizza, Quesada, and Athens Grill. The only clothing retailer is The Outskirts, which is a higher end (aka expensive) boutique. The aesthetics lean a bit mature for my tastes, with brands like Eileen Fisher and Gerry Weber. They do carry lots of Canadian brands, like Spanner, Joseph Ribkoff, and Frank Lyman, which have some cool and funky pieces, but also some matronly items (in my opinion). Definitely not a store that I personally would frequent, but being a hardcore shopper, I had to step in to see what it was all about, haha. Other businesses include a TD bank, Avis car rental, a medical clinic, a pet store, a kitchen and bathroom studio, a cannabis dispensary, a hair salon, and a place called "This is Healthful" which calls itself an "Educational Prevention Clinic and Health Centre" - whatever that means (?) {shrug emoji} There's lots of free parking.
