I learned about this chain (that we don't have in Hawaii) from Yelpers in Los Angeles. The merchandise (costing five dollars and less, in general) is geared towards the younger generation because they have cute merchandise (like stickers and bag charms), candy, books for adolescents, and items for dorm rooms. I saw many Hello Kitty things... and Snoopy... and Stitch! It was so challenging to resist! I decided on a greeting card for a dollar... and a pack of stickers... because this purchase can fit in my suitcase easily! Gosh... I wish we had Five Below in the 50th State!

Exemplary service was offered by cashier attendant Diego. He was courteous, timely, and made my husband feel welcome. This service really seems to stem from the top down. The store manager Johnny welcomed customers and was very personable. Johnny genuinely cared for the customers and was setting a great example for his team. The store manager Johnny also modeled to all how a leader should be. He made sure his staff were comfortable and assured them that their breaks would be coming. I think more retailers should exemplify this as staff can feel overloaded during the Christmas Holiday Season. Grocery Outlet is not a normal grocery store. It's a co-op where the central office opportunistically buys up close outs, over productions, etc, then offers their customers at local stores great prices. Because of this practice, they can offer their customers great prices, but it's always hit or miss. Like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates, "you never know what you're going to get." You may find a great price on a brand name item that you love, and, if so, buy it up right away because they likely won't be restocking once it's gone. They also offer their own store branded products. The ones I've tried have been good quality. Over the past two years I've noticed that they seem to be offering less variety, less customer service, and the shelves aren't as well stocked. Today's visit was especially disappointing. I went specifically to buy an item featured in their ad-- front page, no less-- and couldn't find any. When I asked each of the two people I found working there, no one knew what I was talking about. It's not that they had sold out; they just never had any and didn't even know they were supposed to. If this were a one time occurrence, I'd let it slide, but it's happened much too often lately. It seems to have become a pattern. I very much resent burning expensive gasoline for an advertised item, just to find that the store not only never had any stock, but the sparse staff didn't even know that it was advertised. I've been to many dollar stores where things feel cluttered or chaotic, but this one feels open, tidy, and very well stocked every time I visit. You can tell the staff really take pride in keeping the store looking great and maintaining it in pristine condition. I especially want to recognize David and Kristen. David works really hard to make sure the store always stays clean, organized, and well stocked. He's constantly moving around the store restocking items, straightening shelves, and keeping everything tidy. I've also noticed that if the checkout line ever gets more than a few people deep, he quickly jumps on a register to help out, stopping whatever he's doing to make sure the flow of checkout keeps moving smoothly. Kristen is wonderful behind the counter. She is always smiling and asking customers how they are doing, which makes the experience feel very welcoming and personal. She keeps friendly conversation going while also staying attentive to the line and making sure everyone is helped in a timely manner. She balances being warm and personable while also managing the checkout process efficiently. I truly wish more dollar stores had the same positive, welcoming vibe this one does. This place has been remodeled to accommodate the Dollar Tree layout and spaced out, as the Dollar tree is typically smaller. Having said that everytime I've come over the past year, it seems that what use to be full shelves are quite empty... here we are 11 days in December and many Christmas items are not restocked, they are just letting their inventory sell out. Which sucks, the Dollar tree use to be the for sure place to get last minute items. However what i may get one day, is not the same offered the following visit. So when you find something you like, buy a few. Otherwise, the staff is always friendly, always a line and they do try to have 2 cashiers available when busy. Some items were priced at $1.50. Greeting cards were $1.25. We looked at individual items for exact prices. We bought greeting cards and snacks. I got some artificial flowers for the cemetery visits.
