Tom's Mini Mart - Hot Dog at Tom's

I'm not sure why I love Carolina hot dogs like I do, but I do. And I'm on a never ending quest for…read moregreat Carolina-style hot dogs--not all hot dogs here in the Old North State are Carolina dogs. Discussing my passion for great dogs, my aunt mentioned a grill in the back of a convenience store in Butner. I set out around lunch time one Monday to see if her recommendation would make the cut. Her food has always been fabulous, but some time in the 80s, she married a man who preferred canned biscuits to her perfectly made biscuits of love. But I'm digressing again, as I'm apt to do. Anyway, I had to ask her a couple of times to be sure I'd know I was in the right place. The convenience store has gas pumps and apparently a car wash. In fact, the only signage I could find was "Tom's Car Wash" along the side of the building. There is a restaurant attached, but that's not the grill I'm reviewing. Once inside, it's a typical convenience store, circa 1975-80. It's not an old country store, and it's not a bright and shiny Family Fare. It's local and friendly. Lots of folks seemed to know each other, and to be honest, I probably knew at least five or so folks they know, but I decided to be in cognito. The grill is in the back. It's mostly to go, but there are two tables. If you want sweet tea, you can purchase it at the grill, but if you want a Coke or anything else, you have to purchase that at the convenience store check-out and buy your food independently. The grill serves several sandwich-type items and a main dish or two a day. I was there for the hot dogs, though the idea of home-made chicken and dumplings was rather tempting. Their hot dogs are regularly the best priced I've seen in the Triangle in a LONG time. Less than 1.50 per hot dog, including mustard, slaw, chili, and onions. But I hit it just right. On Mondays, hot dogs are just 99 cents! I can't say these were the best hot dogs in the world but they are pretty darn good, and the price just can't be beat. The location is a bit out of the way, but if you find yourself in Butner with a hankering for a darn good Carolina dog, you know where to go.

I was pleasently supriseded to find the premium gas here last week, cheaper than the other stations…read moreby almost 0.25 per gallon? They may have just been been late on price changes, but it was still a treat!

So if you want to have some good tacos, churros, crepés, chicharrones you need to visit this place. For tacos i go to Taqueria Allende , for crepés Mike's Ice Cream, chicharrones I don't know the name but you will see them in the entrance, for churros. If you decide to go let me know what you think.

The taco food trucks are authentic, cheap and amazing quality - similar to what I had in LA and Mexico City. The churros were a bit disappointing - over-fried and dry and they only had the caramel-filled ones as a option when I went. Typically they also have other filling options and there's also plenty of stalls selling veggies, elotes, and random stuff you would expect at a flea market. Most people speak only Spanish there, so either brush up on your Spanish or find someone to translate if you can :)

No one is ever at the front register. i walked in there today and this older man was standing at the register waiting to pay for his pack of beer. Meanwhile , Krystal & Mary were both in the office . you could see Krystal right at the door way & the man is just LITERALLY STANDING THERE . she told both us "you don't see that the light isn't on at that register ?!" excuse me ? Like People be standing there for over 5mins and you can hear the employees in the back office. you have to yell for someone to get their attention. then they never have the main register open. They force everyone to use self check out. Some folks do not want to use self check out and the store sells things that require ID why would you not have a main register open. Again lazyness, every time i go over there i see the employees out by their cars or outside hanging out smoking cigarettes like this a hang out spot. very unprofessional & everyone in that area is complaining in regards to this matter. Something needs to be done. We need folks who actually want to work & not want to be hiding in the back office or forcing people do self check out. If that is the case then the store doesn't need employees if the customers gotta be the ones to do their job

The selection has always been limited, and I expect that from a small town Food Lion, but I used to at least be able to go here and stock up on staples that don't need to be fancy. Now I'm frustrated to the point where I don't even feel like it's worth my time to do that. I no longer purchase much fresh fruit here, because what's on the floor is moldy or clearly about to go moldy any second. I got burned more than once this year buying strawberries that looked iffy but still ok (because that was all they had), only to get them out of the fridge the next morning to find the container full of mold. I've also had issues with shelved food, such as chocolate bars that I opened to find had clearly completely melted at some point. Today, I ended up leaving again without items on my shopping list, because everything they had out was spoiled. Bunches of cilantro with all the leaves blackened and slimy, moldy and mushy onions, beef that has turned totally gray in the packaging, and no distilled water left on the shelf. It also seems like a lot of the regular employees I had gotten used to seeing are no longer there. To me, it seems like a serious management problem that needs to be addressed ASAP.

The next option is about 15 miles out of town. I'm a steak and potatoes kind of person and I've been spoiled up in NoVA and New York by places like Wegmans and Martin's (taking after the Wegmans model with its latest stores). I could go to the meat counter and get custom cuts if I wanted them. Then I moved to Creedmoor, NC. Even my last visit to this Food Lion, I went in to find what was on sale in the meat department, specific cuts of steaks. There was very little to be found, and what was there I wasn't willing to buy - thin steaks or extremely poor quality (old) meat. Nobody was willing to pay attention from the meat service dept. What is even more exasperating is the prices - Food Lion further north was known for being a bit on the inexpensive side, but here it seems like the priciest (and only) game around. I'll travel to Raleigh to do my grocery shopping and avoid this place if at all possible. My only visits now are if I'm in a pinch for a specific ingredient.
