Great Runway section at this TJ's
    Christina G.

It was one of the first TJ's I knew to get a "Runway" section. That is, designer items at discount prices. Designer ranges from the increasingly pedestrian Seven Jeans to high-end hopefuls like Nanette Lepore to real couture from Vera Wang. At stores like this, you know it's all about the hunt. Often, there's only a single piece of a coveted item, and it's in a football-player size. But every now and then, you'll find something at a price worth celebrating. Like my Vivienne Tam tank I got for $20 years ago, and still wear. There are also a few pieces I shouldn't have been fooled into: an Emilio Pucci dress and a plain Coach wallet that were both far overpriced from what they would have been online. So you have to really know your labels & past seasons, and thereby your bargains. Outside of Runway, I've had some luck with shoes (though DSW is much better), housewares (prefer Homegoods), and athletic-ware. Pretty tidily kept, and the new checkout system ensures efficiency (along with many extra tempting baubles to entice you on your way to the register). A $5 DVD of Tomb Raider? Just what I always needed!

The aforementioned Comic Sans mug. Somewhere, a designer is crying--and, yes, that designer is me.

Holy home goods section, Batman! I could have stocked my entire house with this one store. Discounted discount frames? Check. Bottle openers? Check. Accent chairs, ottomans, wooden spoons, novelty mugs written in Comic Sans? Check, check, check, check! This is by far the largest home goods section I've ever seen in a TJ Maxx, and it doesn't detract from the rest of the store. The women's clothing and designer markdowns were still well-sized, and there were the usual gift sections and add-ons (chocolate, novelty wine bottle sleeves, etc). The employees weren't particularly friendly, but they were efficient. Note: this location isn't terribly easy to access--there's only one primary entrance to the strip mall. I believe the only way in is to follow Garrett up through the intersection. Be sure to map it before you go!

Great furniture options, horrible ugly nasty bathrooms!!!!!

New Hope Commons is your standard shopping center with big box retailers. There's nothing about it…read morethat makes it stand out from the pack. It could be better and it also feels dated, hence my two-star rating. New Hope Commons is located just off 15-501 (Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd) and I-40 exit 270. The shopping center is hidden from the main drag. Tucked deep in the corner of New Hope Commons is a Walmart. My wife and I have a place nearby and it took one year for me to learn that a Walmart was hidden away back here. It's located across the parking lot from a Best Buy which I thought was odd. I hadn't seen two big box retailers, on the scale of Walmart and Best Buy, share the same parking lot before. However, I don't think Best Buy is as popular as it used to be and I didn't have any problems parking. Other chain stores at New Hope Commons include Bath & Body Works, Michaels, Marshalls, Burlington, Tuesday Morning, Old Navy, Dick's, Ashley HomeStore, Men's Wearhouse, Great Clips, Party City, GameStop, and Barnes & Noble. This fairly generic and value-based lineup of retailers should give you a general idea of what this shopping center is like. I will say that Barnes & Noble stores are becoming increasingly rare so I think they're a treat. Also, outside of Barnes & Noble is a little pond and fountain with a walkway, benches, and nice landscaping. It's an uncharacteristically unique and beautiful feature of this otherwise bland and stereotypical suburban shopping plaza.
