Sometimes it's truly hard to believe a place can be that good when you see nothing but five star reviews year after year. But then again, some places are run with such quality, standards and customer service that you understand immediately that they are head and shoulders above everyone else in the area. Over several visits to DP I've bought for various people: - Chocolate lollipops - Chocolate dipped pretzel rods - Various flavors of chocolates such as coffee, peanut butter, cookies & cream plus others. - Most importantly the Dolce Patisserie Signature Cake which is pictured at the below link and is a chocolate cake with a layer vanilla creme brulee, fresh raspberries and chocolate mousse www.dolcepatisserie.com/Cakes.html There are many other things offered as well along with the ability to go about as custom as you want particularly within the cake realm. The one item I want to focus on is the signature cake. It's truly one of a kind. I don't really like chocolate in any form, period. But, the signature cake while it certainly has a lot of chocolate in it is very deceptive in that the chocolate flavor does not overpower the raspberry or the creme brulee flavors. All three are highly discernible and all three play off of each other perfectly. The last thing I need to mention is the man himself, Chef Alan. The guy is great and is always approachable in the shop and he always is quick to thank you for whatever you've purchased. He also went out of his way to make the signature cake that I ordered a day early before the recent blizzard on his "off day" more or less same day with no notice. While he was being modest and saying that it would be no trouble since he was already at the office I appreciate him taking the time to do it and trust me when I say that all who ate the cake (self included) thought it was amazing. (While he did indeed win an episode of the now defunct Food Network Show "Sweet Genius" I've never seen the episode so unlike many who found out about this shop because of the show, I found out about it more via word of mouth from other very happy past customers.) Dolce Patisserie is not to be confused with the Hellertown Bakery as what they offer there is completely different from what is offered here both in terms of style, substance and most certainly price. One look along with one taste of what is being done here and you quickly realize that the people of Hellertown and the LV in general are really lucky to have a high end place like this so close because truly this is the type of stuff you would expect in places like a Ritz-Carlton, a Waldorf, Philly or NYC. Great chocolate! Holy smokes! Pros: -True chocolatier -The chocolate -The little tarts and desserts -Macarons (*there is a 'but'*) -The CHOCOLATE -Its further out of the way... (A con for my stomach/wants). -Toffee sometimes tastes ALMOST undercooked...almost grainy. -Macarons can be very sweet (I wonder which method they use to make them...some macarons I had in other states/countries) were less sweet.) BUT they are immaculately made! -Pricey...but its a true chocolate confectionary. Ya want special chocolate? Then get your caboose here! This place has gorgeous chocolates, amazing flavor, and fantastic choices. Their special cake/mousse thing is amaze-balls...seriously. They have so many little delicate things, I just want to SHOVE THEM ALL IN! But...no, you can't. Their macarons are good...just the sweeter kind I occassionally run into. Really delicate though with good flavor. Nice "chew" after the initial delicate crunch. I think there is 2 ways to make these, one is less sweet and one more. Their toffee though...I got a few bags (milk and dark chocolate) and the chocolate itself was wonderful. The toffee-not so much. I did notice a slight difference between the bags...so I suspect the batch I had was undercooked slightly (Barely out of the grainy part of cooking where it just rolls over to toffee). It broke apart more like the grainy sugar you get from undercooking and tasted too close to sugar than toffee. But...the other bag wasn't QUITE as 'almost-grainy' and more 'toffee-like'. Its way too sugar sweet when cooked on the lighter color/early toffee side. It's definitely alittle out of the way, but thats great for my exercise needs. I've stopped by Dolce twice now. The first time I stopped by just out of curiosity and ended up bringing a few muffin tops home...which were superb! Only the pastry chef was working that afternoon, and he took the time to tell me about his creations and their set up. After living abroad for several summers and being used to getting any delicacy I wanted at the local patisserie, I was really excited to see our own little shop in Hellertown. I stopped again this evening to pick up a treat for dessert. Of course, I couldn't decide and ended up with two: a tart with a Breton butter cookie at the bottom, topped with strawberry jam, vanilla mousse & chocolate shavings AND a caramel apple custard tart. We've eaten the strawberry one so far, and it was fantastic. Yes, $6.95 might sound like a lot for a dessert to most LV-ers, but I think it's a steal for the quality!
