The home style iced teas and flavoured cold milk drinks are a splash of Heaven on a summers day, and the dessert cake selection are the perfect end to a autumn nights city strolling and the chocolates and coffee are prefect in winter. The gift boxes are the prefect thing to take back to the office when you need to bribe the admin assistant (they're just a little too good to take home for mum) if they last the distance... This is the kind of place I'll take any bitter ex-pats and east coaster visitors who need to see that Adelaide's got talent, and so far everyone of them has gawked in amazement and walked out with a smile.

I'm not going to tell you what it's called either; otherwise you'll all rush down there, buy some and then they'll run out and I'll be pissed off. And you wouldn't want that. Would you? Try something else instead. There's a deliciously delectable plethora of tastefully tantalising treats available. So buy those. Then get in line for a trip to Nirvana and back. Seriously.

For a coffee lounge this place has do much personality and I have never dined in a place like this. Apparently this place used to be a brothel and today I can see how it's still carried that intimate feel. The place is dimly lit and has a lot of couches and booths which make you forget you're in a restaurant. This place is always busy!! My Aunt once told me, only eat in places that are busy that's the best way to know a place is good. Well spats definitely checks the box for that! Whenever you go to spats be prepared to have to wait 10mins or so to be seated. Now on to the food. Spats is well known for their desserts and for a good reason, they are goood. All the desserts range in price from $10-13 so it will not hurt your wallet. Along with the desserts I would recommend their cheese platter, it is exceptionally good value for money for the amount of cheeses you get. I can't say much for the $16.50 cocktails, their coffee or savoury menu as I've always grabbed dessert there, so I guess you'll have to try that for yourself. F the haters, I love spats!

Quite a bit bigger then its counterpart - The Elephant Walk, Spats promises more little nooks and crannies in which to share an intimate moment with a loved one, friends or a soon - to - be loved one. However, I was taken into a second room which had 70's decor that didn't quite fit the same atmosphere. It was a booth of old crappy wood and yellow, aged patterned glass. The service was good but the desserts and coffees were quite expensive (and you need cash, which is a pain in the ass). To be honest - maybe it's my palette or something, but I ordered a Mocha and it came - without milk, but with cream - in a glass that was too hot to hold and i just didn't enjoy it. The last time I didn't enjoy something with chocolate in it was ... never. However the cake we had was presented well and really tasty! Its a different little place to go which is often open when other places are not and if you get seated in the atmospheric room you first come into and just have cake - it would be quite good.

I was a little lack lustre about returning to Elephant Walk so soon, but with Eggless closed and a quick ring around of dessert bars at 11:40 on a Friday night it seemed they were the only choice open. After a few awkward moves to actually make it into the booths (they can be low down and a bit squishy) two out of our party of four decided on the peanut choc waffles. Ohhhhhh my. Elephant Walk gets onto my dessert bar favourites with these alone. I still wish they'd vamp up the rest of their menu, but at least now I have a favourite to keep coming back for.

A table out the back (eg. outside) was offered which took a little bit of convincing until the waiter mentioned the word 'heater'. Seated around our table under the stars, enjoying the radiant warmth of the gas heater, we certainly didn't feel like we were sitting in our 2nd option! The vegan menu was well-suited to my being lactose-free & the multitude of waffles/banana split/etc was indeed appreciated by the other three. I always love the multitude of tea options & the staff always serve everything with a smile. A great place to chill & wind down and leaving the previous dining establishment to enjoy dessert here invariably makes the night last longer!

Don't you just love it when somewhere exceeds all of your expectations? Well say hello to Chocolate…read moreTaperia. This little dessert bar opened only about a week ago on Melbourne Street, North Adelaide. I snapped a picture of it while it was still being fitted out, a large pink window with the words 'Chocolate Taperia' and a cardboard sign on the door saying 'coming soon'. To tell you the truth I was excited, I'm always excited to try a new dessert bar, but I was also preparing myself to be disappointed. See, all I'd seen was this large pink window that made me think this was going to be a bit too sterile but cutsey to have that real dessert bar charm. Enter last Sunday night, and the pink window is now joined by a few rustic chairs and tables, and the door now opens to a beautifully lit wooden room with antique style chairs and gorgeous wood work. Hello Chocolate Taperia - I think I'm in love. The menu is hispanic, with delicious desserts from Spain and Latin America. It was created by chef Jean-Claude de Toulouse, and he popped over to our table to explain a bit about the menu. It was a nice touch. The Sweet Tapas platters are great for sharing, but try and tackle one yourself and you'll end up wrapping biscuits up in a napkin to take home for later. They sure can be filling. There are 'warm temptations' perfect for winter, and some seasonal desserts. Chocolate Taperia do a good job at pulling off the whole package. Nothing is half arsed (excuse my french), they've put 100% into the menu, the setting, and the service. I'm always rooting for a dessert place that does more than throw together some crepes, waffles, and a fondant and call it a menu. So I hope Chocolate Taperia gets it's name out there as a firm contender on the dessert scene.

For chocolate addicts, it doesn't get much better than this (or worse if you have the "eyes bigger…read morethan stomach" condition like me). Everything from the pressed metal walls to the booths with mini lamp lights and sheer golden curtains creates an aura of luxurious, dark chocolate, I mean wooden, boudoir. The service has been wonderful both times I have been here - friendly, attentive (sometimes a little too much) and always able to manage a large crowd of people (of which there is always one around). A menu of hot and iced chocolates coming in orange, mint, chilli flavours combined with South American herbal teas, coffee and sodas are a nice introduction but lets be realistic you're here for those 2 pages of chocolate based desserts on the menu. I normally pick a chocolate tapas platter to share which changes on a monthly basis just so I can try combinations of dark sticky chocolate with churros or tarts with macarons and mini mousse pots. "Presentation" is the one word I would use to describe the essence of this place. From the carefully decorated dishes to the interior and the staffs manner, it is definitely worth adding to the "best dessert bars of Adelaide," list.

Fortunately for us we were not disappointed! The presentation of the desserts here is as immaculate as the white walls and white crockery they come on. The signature Patisserie Jin logo is stencilled in icing sugar and chocolate in one way, shape or form on the desserts and clearly each dessert is quite unique to this cafe. The little faces engraved on the spoons and forks here were also very kawaii! My dining counterpart's green tea creme brulee was sweet and custardy but balanced out by the fact that the matcha tea was used to flavour the dish. The triple chocolate cake was all mine and although small it was incredibly rich and a little bit bitter thanks to the use of dark chocolate. This is now the only dessert bar remaining on Unley Rd and so I think it will become more popular, but the atmosphere is slightly clinical and sparse for such a large space. It feels more like you're sitting in a bakery rather than a cute and cosy little dessert bar. The prices are also quite high for the size of the desserts you receive but they are rich in sugar value. Next time I'm craving a green tea dessert though I will be back!

It was like eating in a cafeteria and the layout was sparse, cold and sterile but the desserts were crafted with love, skill and fine ingredients. Expensive but it reflects the quality of the chocolate and ingredients. With late night dessert bars few and far between in adelaide it was a little busy but needs a little love, small details are lost in translation like plastic cups for water (super odd when most of the cutlery is custom) and the super low music. But again all adds up to a very different experience.
