Started off with the stuffed tapioca pearls - very creative and full of flavor. The lettuce wrap and garnish didn't need any seasoning as the inside of the pearl was a burst of flavor. For my entree, I had the blue crab fried rice which contains lump crab so you don't have to deal with the shell. It was good but I found it a little plain. I requested hot sauce to add and the server was kind enough to bring me two options - ended up using both. For dessert, I ordered the mango sticky rice based on the server's recommendation who said it was her favorite on the menu and most traditional. I'm glad I took her advice as it was delicious and the best part of meal! All the food at neighboring tables looked amazing, I was a lone diner for this meal but would love to return with a larger group and try other dishes like the lemongrass chicken and crispy whole fish. read more

Went here last night with two of my friends. We were able to catch the happy hour special which was great. The daiquiris had interesting flavors and tasted bright and fresh. The appetizers were delicious especially the chicken wings which were all of our favorites. One friend got the pork chop platter which she loved- while my friend and I got the pho which we didn't love. It's missing something in the flavor and for the price I was upset because I've had much better bowls of pho for $8-10 or even when I make it at home in the instapot. Pros: Cute outdoor seating, well-spaced with pretty decorations indoors, lots of space and conveniently located on 14th street. Prior to the sn-omicron season, we've dined there and I greatly enjoyed the giant portioned meat platter and flavorful (albeit typical DC priced) cocktails. The brunch banh mi sandwich with eggs and sausage patties was delicious, although my egg rolls are never crunchy whether I order in person or take out. Service could be hit or miss, but it's COVID, so I'm generally pretty forgiving since everyone is short-staffed recently. *Regarding pickup: my most recent order was for pickup through DoorDash was pending for over an hour as still "preparing your order" so finally I drove to the restaurant to check. The place was not crowded and Sierra the hostess came up to me at the front. I asked about my order and it was in fact ready and just sitting there. I explained that the system was still showing as pending on my phone and asked that they should check to make sure it gets noted as ready so customers know when food is ready for pick up. Her immediate response? "That's not our problem." Excuse me? I explained politely that it is, because if the food is not noted as ready by the restaurant, we don't know when to come...? She again told me, "that's not our problem, that's doordash's." I said I understand it's an app, but the restaurant can still note when the food is ready? "Not our problem." The best response she had when I asked who I should tell was, "I don't know how that works." I told her, slightly annoyed now, that this incident makes me not ever want to order from Doi Moi again. She told me, "ok, have a good day." What kind of reaction is this to a customer just giving helpful feedback in person about your restaurant's online order processing shortcomings? This place definitely surpassed my expectation, especially for an Asian Fusion restaurant. My boyfriend and I came here last Friday for dinner and unfortunately we didn't have reservation. We opted out for waiting 30-45 minutes to sit at a table and chose to sit at the bar instead, which honestly, was perfectly fine. The bar tender was super friendly and knowledgeable of both the bar menu and the food menu you. Everything we ordered, from our apps to or main entree's were delicious. Some of the plates are on the smaller side, so you may want to order two apps for two people to begin with or an entree and a half per person. We started off with their roasted cashews and fried pig ears - they were both so yummy! It would've been a perfect pairing if I were a beer drinking. I think next time, I may ask them to make sure their pig ears are super crispy though. That's just my personal preference. They were a little on the softer side for my liking - but they were still good nonetheless. We also ordered the Laos lemongrass ground pork. This was amazing! However, it came in two small portions. It seemed more like an appetizer to me. So again, if you order this entree, you may want to order something else to go with it. And the last thing we ordered was the whole crispy fried snapper. This was probably my favorite thing on the menu. My boyfriend and I shared both the apps and both the entree's, but honestly, this was so good, I could've finished this on my own. ‍ I'll definitely be returning and will try some of their other items on the menu. I've been to doi moi several times and I'm over letting people talk me into it. I've never been impressed with the food for the price point its at.... Steak cuts are low quality. Fried rice is never fried and always wet and clumpy. Dumplings and other appetizers are mids. The best part of most of these items are the acidic sauces served with them rather then the main ingredients. The only thing I would recommend on the current menu is the fried tofu. If you want good authentic and well priced vietnamese food, go elsewhere. Your best bet is Arlington, VA around the Eden Center and along Clarendon/Courthouse/Ballston. read more

Attended Doi Moi winter restaurant week. They had a good selection of their menu available on their RW menu. The decor is my sweet spot of white, modern, minimal & plant-filled. Had the stuffed lemongrass app which was really unique though quite heavy as it was essentially battered and fried pork. For main, I had the duck khao soi- khao soi is one of my go-tos and this one was good, but not as pungent as I like it. We could clearly see the outdoor activity for people watching, in addition to everything happening inside overall. We all had the 'Welcome to the Jungle' cocktail . It was really sweet, but we knew after our long walk & stroll to get over there, it was the perfect cocktail to end our evening as the night got more wild by the minute. This place is garbage. I ordered pho and everything that they would do wrong, they did wrong. The garnishes came in the soup already. I never use them. Why do I have to be forced to eat bean sprouts and jalapenos when I hate them? Why do this when it can be easily brought out on the side like 99.999% of places that serve pho? The broth came lukewarm. I could have dipped my entire tongue in there without it burning. How is lukewarm broth supposed to cook the raw meat? So I pointed out the problem with the broth and told them to make me a new one. If they microwaved it or reheated the whole thing in a pot, the noodles would have come out soggy, meat overcooked. What did I receive back? Hot broth with soggy noodles and overcooked meat. After specifically telling them not to do it that way. I have no idea how any place can get such a simple dish wrong. Especially when they charge such high prices for everything. If you want a taste of bad asian food, this is the place to go. Otherwise, steer clear.
