I've had my eye on this place for awhile now. We decided to check this place out last Friday night. The downstairs area was poppin so we opted to just sit at the upstairs bar. Granted we only tried one dish, but this place somehow managed to ruin two of my favorite vietnamese foods with the Pho Dip. The banh mi bread was stale and the meat was so dry. You'd think the dip would be some concentrated version of pho broth but it taste like a watered down version. We came based on a recommendation, but weren't as pleased as we thought we'd be. We came on a Tuesday evening to check out Doi Moi. When we arrived we were seated quickly and didn't need a reservation. Our waiter was really friendly and always checking in on us. For starters we tried the crispy spiced tofu. It was good and the tofu was really flavorful and crispy, but not spicy. It did come with a good sauce though. For entrees we got the stir fried rice noodles, drunken chicken bahn mi and a side of the five spice fries. The noodles were ok, it didn't taste like there was much spice or flavor in general. The bahn mi was very tough to eat. The chicken was very chewy and the bread hardened so fast it made it hard to eat. It also was just ok, nothing special in our opinion. I'm Vietnamese and this is an Americanized restaurant. I would have to say I'm pretty disappointed because the revamp of the food doesn't represent the Vietnamese flavors and culture well. We got the steak appetizer and it was dry. Very different from the picture. They replaced me with the wings and they're nothing really special. Just deep fried wings with Asian sauce. We also got the lemongrass noodles with pork. Younger four small pieces for of pork mixed with flower for $25. Definitely didn't worth the money. It was alright with the peanut butter sauce but that's not the traditional sauce. We also got the Asian salad. Traditionally, it comes with some sort of protein. There was nothing. It was bland. He gave us recommendations on food and also gifted us a free whiskey drink because the bar had made an extra one. Crispy Spiced Tofu: 8/10. Very crispy and very light. The dipping sauce it came with provided an additional tangy-ness that was delightful! Drunken Noodles: 8.5/10. As someone who is a lover of drunken noodles, this was one of the highlight dishes for me! Steam was still coming out when the noodles were served! Noodles were so chewy and the veggies were very crunchy, providing the perfect mixture of texture. Saigon Salad: 9/10. My first time trying green papaya salad and I must emphasize!! that you MUST order this! So refreshing and simple yet so so so full of flavor! The portion size is also so generous! Shaken Beef: 9/10. All I can say is that this is delicious. Ricardo had recommended this dish to us and we were sold! We also ordered a bowl of rice on the side (for an extra charge) to eat with this dish. Decided to visit for happy hour with a friend. Ordered a daiquiri and an order of the chicken dumplings. The daiquiri was good but the dumplings were too gummy. I hate sending food back but I was not a fan. They took the dumplings back. However, they were still on my bill. Thankfully, they did take them off when asked. The ambiance was very cute. It filled up by the time we left at 7:30pm. A young not-well-dressed crowd. We started with a Last Cosmopolitan. Although we were going to dinner shortly after cocktails, we ordered the beef jerky and bao sampler. Everyone dug into the beef jerky and several said they usually get two orders. I thought it was ok. The boa sampler was good too. We each had 1/2 of the 2 kinds. One was better than the other but I can't remember which one I liked better. The music was really loud. There are places that do very simple food excellently... Then there is DOI MOI! A place that literally takes Vietnamese and French flavors and flair, and forces the two cultures to do what I can only call a "tango on the palate." The feel of it is as if you stepped in a Parisian eatery in the middle of a Hanoi food market, and the food here reminds you of just that. I'm talking drunken chicken bahn mis, crispy brussels with nuoc cham, and all the steamed buns you can eat, just to name a few. I've heard so many great things about Doi Moi. I will admit, their dumplings are out of this world. However, my last experience was subpar to say the best. My party ordered the Duck Curry and a noodle dish. The noodles were pretty bland, which wasn't a big deal honestly. But the duck curry that was packaged, was filled to about 1/5th of the size of the container. I figured this was a mistake, but when I used the contact form to see if this was just a mistake, I heard nothing back. Okay - so this will be a rating on 2 aspects. I'll start off with food; because as a person who grew up eating Viet food that my mom made and eating at the typical mom & pop shops; I have certain expectations on flavoring - which I think that Doi Moi is very close to attaining for a modernized/americanized asian eatery. Its definitely a place I would come to if I wanted to do some fun cocktails and be close by a lot of bars, etc - but be warned it is pricy for what it is. That being said, I ordered the Cha Gio (fried spring rolls) and Suon Nuong (grilled pork chop platter). They definitely gave a good portion (3 pork chops) and it all tasted pretty good! Additionally, ordered the mango daiquiri and the watermelon Thai-basil daiquiri. The drinks were super good - not too overly sweet. On the other hand - we spotted a mouse running across by the coffee and kitchen area twice. We told our waitress and I believe she told her manager; but that was the end of that. Another server saw the mouse as well - and hope that the restaurant can resolve this issue. I would like to start off with the caveat that I am picky especially with flavors I grew up eating! I knoooow this is a fusion place, so readers beware- I grew up eating lots of great Vietnamese food in my formative years, and that lens is applied to my palate and opinions now. Parking would be hard but that's almost universal in DC! Public transit/walking highly suggested! I came with my friend for Friday evening happy hour and sat at the bar. The service was prompt and courteous, and they got a little busy closer to 6p. Maybe 4/5 here. Okay so the food - we got the meat tower to share. The food came out quickly! It was what I expected for a fusion place in DC. The amount of food was just right for two Asian females with probably smaller appetites. That's the best I can describe the amount! I am including two photos that I took (there is another plate of 5 dumplings and a plate of two baos with pork belly in it). The best thing was probably the bun of the bao (not pictured)- it was smooth chewey texture and a just a little sweet, which was really great for me. Everything else was a little bland or a little salty and no real Vietnamese flavor popped out (fish sauce, lemongrass, chilis, etc). Again, I know this is suppose to be fusion and this is adored by many many people! The pickled daikon/radish in the beef jerky also didn't quite have the right flavor I was looking for. So to me, the flavor was a miss on Vietnamese, this is of course just my opinion, but I still ate everything contently. So all in all, it's really 3.5 stars. And I know if I wanted good Vietnamese flavors, I wouldn't think to come here as the first place. But, I would recommend visiting for the ambiance and the location. read more

They won't take orders over the phone, and direct you to online ordering, which does not allow for "special instructions," so if you have an allergy or preference, you are SOL. So flavorful, crispy and delicious. Very well marinated and made and we devoured it. If we didn't order a beef entree we would've ordered the beef again. The menu at Doi Moj is a bit more unique than other Vietnamese restaurants. The dishes are more westernized and felt more like a fusion restaurant than an authentic Vietnamese restaurant. We had a few appetizers and an entree to share between 2 people and it was enough food. The crispy brussel sprouts were not very crispy. They were soft. Summer rolls could have been better. Doi Moi is a neighborhood spot that wears many hats! It's great for a takeout meal, a fun dinner with friends, or a night out in its vibey downstairs bar.
