She wanted to test how skiddish he was by throwing a treat on the ground near him. He jumped, but is food motivated so he did take the treat. She kept doing that and then said that "he's too confident" and that made her worry because she normally has dogs who are so scared of her that they wont even take a treat. She also never asked if he could have treats or if he has sensitivities or allergies. She just said it might give him diarrhea and "oh well" which we immediately weren't a fan of her mindset with that. (Luckily he didn't have any sensitivities so he was fine) She then wanted to see him work with us. We took his leash and go to the other side of the room. She came out from behind her desk and walked directly at him and he tensed up and did a low growl, which we told her he would do because that's what he did when strangers walk directly at him looking at him in the eye or try to interact with him. She said she would not work with him because he would bite her. (Btw she never asked if he has ever bit anyone or if he tried to and he hasn't). We understood avoiding working with him because he was signaling that he was uncomfortable. She then proceeded to give us some drills to work on and was showing us how to do them correctly. (All of this is with treat rewards) while this was going on she was making small remarks about how "we weren't bonded with him" how we had no foundation for obedience, but she never once asked for what he can do or what we have worked on. Which he knew all basic commands (sit, lay down, stay, touch, focus even fun commands like spin & shake) she told us he doesn't exhibit any fearful behaviors snd he only is showing aggression. she said we needed to muzzle him all the time, even around family and friends he is super comfortable with. She told us we needed to "make a plan" and know "what decisions we needed to make WHEN he bites someone." We also told her that the week before he had just been in a dog fight, initiated by other other dogs who attacked him (he did not fight back he tried to escape) and we had said he was a lot more timid and scared of everything after that. She completely disregarded this and continued on how he was an aggressive dog and there was no such thing as fear based aggression. Which was not what we heard from other trainers we spoke with. She made remarks about how her training is "really expensive" but she would offer us a deal. She told us about muzzles & tools we should invest in and continued to comment on how the "cheapest" options would work in the mean time even though she didn't recommend them. This was essentially insinuating that we couldn't afford them, which was really rude & unprofessional in our opinion. (Im assuming the assumption was from how we were young and how we had to hold off initially because of funds, but still doesn't make it okay) She also proceeded to tell us how she has a dog at home that she can't trust wont bite, and a mallinois that has to be muzzled all the time if she's not home. This was a huge red flag to us, because if a "certified" dog trainer can't train her own dogs to not bite and not need muzzles all the time, then how is she suppose to help train ours. We also disagreed that he should be muzzled ALL OF THE TIME. Muzzles are training tools, as something you should use when necessary not all of the time and the goal should be to work your dog to be able to not need a muzzle. Our pup was getting antsy & stressed out with the new environment since we had been there for almost an hour so we went outside for a quick bathroom break. When we came back she didn't even ask if we had questions or if we wanted to rebook, she just told us the next time she was available and then re-iterated again that she would cut us a deal for just one session at a time instead of paying for a package, which was "really pricy." This was the third time expenses were brought up in this manner. All of this rubbed us the wrong way from not reading the right form down to assuming we wanted to book right away without asking us and continuously making comments about how our dog was aggressive without any evidence or explanation of why. read more
