For decades Guy Yeaman has been offering affordable obedience classes through Northern Nevada cities park and rec. Like other trainers, he has his own style, but certainly  knows what he's doing, and he makes a point of  keeping his classes at a low cost. He  does something I suspect no other trainer in Northern Nevada does: after paying for the initial 6 classes participants can  return FOR FREE as often as they wish until death do the dog part. And here's what I've learned about dog training: It's kind of like learning to play the piano, You can have the best instructor in the world, but it comes down to how often and for how long the owners train their canines on a weekly basis when they are not in class. Guy understands this, which is why he allows owners to return as much as they'd likeand why he spends so much time educating dog owners as part of his courses.     In the class I took,  Guy not only had students practice the basics with our canines - come, sit, stay, etc. but he was a wealth of knowledge who taught me a lot about how dogs think, behave, how to properly take care of them, etc He is a walking/talking dog whisperer.  Point in case: in the summer he talked about how to determine whether pavement is too hot for dogs to walk on, something the dogs aren't going to be able to communicate, and it's information like this I find useful.  We had a talk in class about using dog booties and  how to keep dogs cool (buy a baby pool for your backyard).  I would have never thought about this on my own.  And when my dog started digging holes in my backyard, Guy had an answer for how to fix that as well.  As a first time puppy owner, I had a lot of questions. When my dog stopped eating for a few days, I called Guy before going to the pricey vet. Guy always stayed after each class to address any individual issues an owner had, as most group dog obedience courses tend to be big.  Some say he's a big talker, which he is, but I find his information educational.  He will spend enormous amounts of time on the phone  addressing individual issues. He has gone with me to the pet store to advise me on what things to buy. He has come to my house for a private lesson,  stayed 90 minutes, but only charged me for 60. When I was injured in a car accident and could not walk nor take care of my dog, he came and picked him up and took him to his house where he not only took care of my dog,  but trained him at his home as well. Other kennels and dog-sitting companies charge a fortune for this boarding-training service and I doubt anyone is  providing door to door service, or at least they would charge extra for this. His fees were more than reasonable and he didn't charge for the pick-up/drop-off. And it's not just me. Guy treats all of his clients with the same dedication, so I'd recommend him without hesitation, whether it's for training purposes in a group setting, or with a private lesson at your home, which I found useful, because he showed me things like how to keep my dog from jumping on my bed,  something you can't learn in a class. He had all the members of my family participate in the at-home training so we all got to practice and learn. read more

Back in 2009, Guy trained my rather rambunctious Irish Wolfhound. She was large, heavy, and had a tendency to jump on people. My wife and I did Guy's classes in Reno and Sparks, and the dog actually lived with Guy for a few weeks as an intense boot camp (Guy brought her to classes twice a week so I could learn to work with her). She came back a different dog, and was very well behaved. There are allegations in the comments that Guy recommended hitting dogs in the face. I don't believe this... Guy always maintained that one should NEVER hit a dog, and I believe he practiced that as well. He did use a chain dog collar for discipline, but always threw it on the ground for the noise - not for hitting or throwing AT the dog. This is akin to the old training trick of shaking a can full of pennies. I used to be on the board of an animal shelter, and know how to identify a dog that has been abused. At NO time while Guy worked with my dog did I see any signs of abuse, period. I trusted Guy completely with my previous dog, and would not hesitate to trust him in the future. read more

He promised me five months ago he would come to my home but never called me back. I called for three more months, now he tells me to wait and call back cause his wife has Cancer. I understand waiting to help his wife. I get she is really sick. But why did he waist my time? I told him I was disabled he seemed to not care. I really needed him to come to my home so I could get my puppies trained. By the time I saw him ( by the way I had to drive to his house ) . My husband & I get there and he tells me I need to go walk with him so he can see what he was up against.!I furiously told him I could not walk I am handicapped. He said oh sorry I wasn't aware. I did tell him EVERYTIME That was why I needed him to come to my house. He ended up taking a walk with my husband as I had to sit and wait for them to come back. I sat in my car with my other dog. She never even got looked at. He said he does training in the park. Well, obviously if I am handicapped and can't walk well, why in the hell would I go to a park at nighttime with all my arthritis! He obviously really does not care. He just wants people to take his class at the park.!He waisted my time and lead me on. By the way my dogs are still Not trained! Well I have mixed emotions on this...... The first time attended with my first dog it was the best thing since sliced bread. We attended the classes up in Tahoe and I was more that thrilled with the experience. There were about 5 other dogs in the class and my dog learned a lot. Guy was great and paid a lot of attention to each owner and their needs with training. Its the second time that was a total disaster. We attended the classes in Gardnerville and there must have been at least 30 dogs in the class. I felt as though I was paying for a group dog walking, which is good to socialize, but I needed training, not socializing. We worked on some "sit, stay, etc..." but all and all there was no individual help. As a matter of fact as walking my dog, the dog in front of me, a German Sheppard, kept turning around and taunting my dog, a rottie. When we were turning around and passing each other the Sheppard barked and lunged toward me dog. I had complete control of my dog, as I have raised rotties before. Guy approached me and had me pin my dog to the ground, which I did, and the Sheppard kept going. Both participants behind me told Guy it was the Sheppard, but he ignored the comments. I was later told to have my dog wear a muzzle to the next class.??? I never went back and I hired another trainer. Guy is good, but I believe he needs to limit the number of participants in his class and do actual training, not dog walking. This type of service should not be about the $ sign, and should be for the good of the animal. read more

I owe the fantastic relationship I have with my dog to Guy's training classes. My German Sheppard mix was a rescue with a lot of insecurity that could have ended up as aggression. Wine Baron: 1. My daughter has had her oversized GSD with Guy for 5 years and I have been taking both my Newfie and GSD to him for 3 years. So I can confirm that Guy is NOT dismissive of womens' comments. Look around the class and tell me what the percentage of male/female is. And tell me why the WOMEN are the ones who keep coming back! 2. My over-exuberant GSD has had the chain thrown at her at least once. It doesn't hurt; rather, it surprises the dog and gives them time to recoup what little brain power they have to reconsider the situation. It's a good strategy, among the many that Guy uses. Although I can verify that the most common strategy he uses is, "Good Dog." Happy L: You were not at the park with your "own personal dogs". Your vehicle has "dog trainer" written all over it and you were there training there without a permit to do so. Your problem is that you were offended when Guy suggested (probably not too gently) that you get a permit from the City of Reno to conduct your business. What you were doing was placing the City in a position of liability and yourself as well. It might do you well if you faced the truth and stopped lying rather than trying to destroy a fellow trainer. Who, by the way, has trainers who bring their dogs to his classes. AND has been in business in the area for 40 years. Kandee W: While it might not have seemed like your dog had any responsibility, that's your perception. Guy is pretty good at ferreting out the culprit. Sometimes it isn't the overt aggressive gesture that starts things off--sometimes it is simply "the look". I've had Guy tell me many times to pay attention to what my dog was looking (staring) at. It is much easier to step into their line of sight and divert their attention than it is to pull them out of a fight. And god knows, those Rotties know "the look" even better than the Shepherds. Suzy "Red" Rowe Guy is awesome. I won't say how many years I've brought our dogs to Guy's classes, but let's just say two Springers, three Aussies, three Doxies and two Weims. I think by the second Doxie, he finally knew my name. Knew the names of each dog by the second class.... Only one dog was invited to repeat class. (Which was free.) He lived to be 15. Guy has also done some advanced work with us and off leash hikes. He is always patient and never embarasses human or dog. I have brought two rescued Pitbulls to Guys classes and we loved it. Guy trains handlers not dogs. The best part of the class for me was socializing my dogs in a challenging but safe environment and teaching me how to read my dogs energy. My female did get the chain threw at her once. It didn't hurt her but snapped her out of the focus she had on another dog and she never did it again, to this day 4 years later. Guy is a dog lover, and dedicated to helping people with their dogs. As for the comment about dismissing women's comments, I didn't find that to be the case at all. Guy was always respectful and answered any and all of my questions as well as everyone's in the class. First off he wears the dog chain around his neck for a very good reason... He uses it for a purpose, as should many others who have out of control animals, he uses it and because he does people seem to think omg he has a chain around his neck.... He has it there because he needs it and also shows people that they do not hurt or injure the dog if used properly... The critical comments do not reflect the years this man has spent helping people have very good well mannered and obedient pets as I did for 14 years after attending a program with mine many years ago... After his program up until my dog became ill and died was the best dog we ever had she was so good that places where they required leased or animals chained such as campgrounds were never actually enforced on her and she was never ever a problem... Prior to his class she was a young dog and a Labrador and she as you'd think was easy to train however developed a few bad habits one was running into the street to cross it to see someone no matter who it was who just looked at her...she almost got hit and no matter how hard I tried I could not get here to obey me as with her need to jump on people when she greeted them... These were minor issues to guy and as a result of his direct involvement immediately corrected her of this and did more than that... He probably saved her from being hit by a car or getting some other trouble as well as the way people received her was amazing... When I attended the class there were several very aggressive dogs and people think oh its a lab they are easy to train I see many labs that are not trained even when their owners have taken them to other trainers with no results... One gentlemen had a German Sheppard that he had not trained to be aggressive was a nice guy and was actually not the type to have such a dog but had the dog it was his kid and extremely dangerous to the point that he feared it would kill somebody. I remember this like yesterday because the dog lunged at mine and snapped when my dog was totally submissive and had been around other dogs that were vicious an her nature was so that they accepted here as a subordinate. Anyway, The dog was trying to bite everybody there the poor gentleman would isolate himself away and Guy came rolling up in his car made a brief introduction and asked who had an aggressive dog or one that bites etc to arrange the owners and the dogs etc. He saw my dog and told him to go by me think she wouldn't provoke his and at a safe distance and watched the dog carefully and that is when the dog snapped... He said ok everybody I want you to do this and pointed at the gentlemen to bring the dog back over and said I need to work with this one first for obvious reasons and will join the rest of you in a moment...well I heard the owner say are you sure he will attack you and guy said I am sure well I remember that dog jumping at him and then stopping dead in its tracks and after 10 minutes you could tell the dog was like a bad kid who has been scolded well it was a few weeks later that dog would turn his head when guy walked up like I want know part of you which I realized later was a pack thing and to guy he was the alpha now and whether liked it or not the dog respected him... He never laid a hand on the animal or hit ever he used the dog chain that was around his neck and merely dropped it didn't throw it on the dog's head to enforce that as the training tool, which the dog saw the choker chain would not be aggressive. He did not make the dog inferior he just taught him that the choker meant that who ever had it was the boss... The gentleman I remember was so grateful at guy as was I and everyone else who had Guy directly work with the dogs that anyone who merely rates him on this page without ever going through is program is full of it... If you think that someone wearing a dog choker who is a dog trainer is inappropriate then go take your dog and yourself to have electroshock treatment because that is how others train their dogs by putting a collar to them that is like getting hit with a taser... It is irresponsible to leave a review that apparently uses absurd irrelevant and obnoxious statements relative to the maturity level of middle school kids on a playground who are too ignorant to know better as with so many who would think that is relevant.... Who also would leave a review on someone to use hearsay or obviously gaited rhetoric concerning some sort of confrontation that if it happened would be the business of the city or police to handle? Guy is truly a professional and gifted dog trainer. We have been dog owners our whole lives but definitely out of league with our new 7 mos old german sherpard! Guy to the rescue! Guy not only is training "us" along with our pup, but he takes extraordinary time educating us about the breed itself, care of, specialties, etc...which has been invaluable! especially the pumpkin puree for his sensitive stomach...it really works!!! I finally found a dog trainer in this area that does NOT use treats to teach everything!!! Guy is great with the dogs and that's why I am there! I am a female with a standard poodle. These dogs are very smart, unfortunately, they want to be in charge. Guy spent time with my dog and I am now training using a halti. Guy showed me how to make this work. As someone else said, "he's blunt..." Is that a bad thing? Not in my opinion! There are 20 dogs and their owners all working together at the same time. there's no time for "chit-chat." I have lots of experience with German Shepherds, but this is a whole other breed of dog! If you want to get trained and bring your dog along, go to GUY!!! You'll be glad you did! Guy Yeaman is the best dog trainer I've ever seen, could write a book, but just wanted to comment on the negative remark about the "dog Chain", I cringed because it was totally misrepresented!!! The dog chain is actually a little "choke" chain, which is sold to help lead a dog, but Guy just drops it on a dog to get their attention. It is light weight and makes little noises as the links click together. DOES NOT HURT and for some unknown (to Me) reason dogs stop leaping and jumping and settle down when they hear it. Very clever gismo that Guy came up with.....because.....he really knows dogs. And loves them!!! I use to walk along with my beagle pup in front of me and Guy would walk up and beside me and smile knowlingly and say...look at the little beag-alee in a very effectionate way. He helped me learn how to train her and at four months old I could give her full rein of the house and small yard while I was at work, ( I came home at lunch) and she never tore up anything, nor did she potty in the house, she was a wonderfull doggie....went to heaven at 15 but I still remember those fun training sessions! read more

I read the other three reviews. I have been working with Guy for over nine (9) years and I am extremely upset by these other reviews. During the entire time that I have been in Guy's class, I have seen him only have to use the chain a total of maybe fifteen times and this includes the fact that I attend both Reno and Sparks classes. If it were not for Guy, I would never have been able to get my second dog and would probably still be be scared to have my very large mixed breed dog around any other dogs. We continue to go to his classes as its helps to keep our two dogs socialized. I am now able to walk both 85 pound plus dogs on my own due to his assistance. My first dog was well trained but never did well around other dogs. He saw me a few times and I was still scared to walk by his class of 20+ dogs. After seeing me several times along the downtown Reno Riverwalk, he asked why I was so afraid to walk by. I explained that my dog could never be around other dogs and she didn't need obidience training. He stated that he could "FIX THIS" issue and told me to sign up for his class. Needless to say, we got hooked as he was extremely heplful!!!! I can't say the results were instantaneous but we listened and with Guy's guidance learned to control our dog but more than that for us as owners to relax. Our dog was a tough one and she did need to have the chain thrown at her one time as she wanted to after every other dog. Guy helped us with choosing the proper tools for working with our dog too and after two years we got our second dog. Our second dog can still be a pest at times but has learned what we require of him after learning so much form Guy. All I can say is the others that competed reviews before me obviously did not take enough time to realize the results that my family has had under Guy's tutelage. I beg to differ about Guy not listening to women. I am a female and he has ALWAYS been courteous and helpful to me about my dog. As a matter of fact, my husband and I are going to take our German Shepherd back to his classes for a refresher course in socialization. Yes, sometimes he will tell you that you are doing something the wrong way, and yes, he is blunt, but with twenty dog owners and dogs in the room he needs to communicate to you and go on to help the next owner. I have never seen him be cruel to a dog or hurt a dog. He usually makes our dog go into the center of the circle until she calms down on her first visit. Once she sees all those dogs all around her, circling her, she decides maybe she should stop trying to be a butt and behave. She learns her lesson and no one gets hurt. I have seen a genuine fondness for dogs in general from him. He gets results and the walking of the dog is part of the training that both the human and dog need. I would recommend him to anyone who needs help training their dog. He has reasonable prices, repeat sessions are included, and he has years of experience in the field. He is also recommended by my veterinarian, so that should tell you something too. read more

I've used Guy to train my dogs and found him to be professional, knowledgeable, respectful and courteous to not only the students (both human and canine) in his classes but also those who stumble across his classes while they are in session. I'm particularly impressed with his sensitivity to those who are fearful of dogs. While I understand the desire to have personalized attention, the goal is to train not only the dog in a multi dog setting but also the human in how to handle the dog in a multi dog setting. As his website states there are various ways to train a dog, his being repetition and praise - definitely not old school. Regarding the chain, those who have actually attended his class (as opposed to second hand information) know under what extreme circumstances that device is used. I find the cost exceptionally reasonable as he has a one time fee which covers as many sessions as you would like to attend, including refreshers. read more

I have now brought five dogs to classes with Guy. Years ago I wrote a very positive review for Guy. But now I have a german shepard which he told the entire class that I shouldn't own. I made the mistake of turning my phone to vibrate during class and he threatened me by saying that he would yank the phone from my hand and throw it in the river if I ever brought it out again. He then proceeded to yell at me, after yelling at another class member, and told me never to come back to class and call for a refund. After class he told all that I didn't deserve to have this dog and was unable to handle or control him and was a safety risk. He also told me that I had been a "pain in his ass for over a decade and a half". He doesn't respect women and believes that in general they shouldn't own dogs. He takes credit for owners' training of dogs as if he was responsible for their success. If you go to his new classes you think, WOW this man must be a good trainer as he usually has 15 or more students. Guess what He just wants himself to look good and there might be one or two new students if lucky. I have never been talked to or about the way he spoke to me in class and after to his new and returning students. He is very disrespectful especially to women. Be a man Guy and admit that you had a bad day and apologize! read more
