With a recent thread extolling the virtues of golden crispy fried chicken, I opted to check out this place since it was mentioned. With our scorching Texas heat, I could have just filled a plastic bag with a couple of ounces of oil, a fresh chicken and some spices, and left it out on the curb to fry all day. Strangely enough, that option was not the most appealing or efficient. After coming out of hiding in my cave at 7 PM, I drove over to the near west side while it was still a balmy 90 degrees. Upon entering, the counter man offered a cheery welcome and pushed a laminated sheet listing their lunch and dinner specials towards me. Since it was fried chicken that brought me here, can you guess what I had? Nope - I caved and had the rotisserie grilled quarter chicken with 3 sides. You can have the dark meat for $6.20 or the white meat option for $6.45. I chose a side of mashed potatoes, black beans and rice, and some sweet plantains (an extra 25 cents for this). Total was $7.25 including tax. The chicken was tasty with its charcoal-infused notes but a little dry. It was unclear on whether it may have been cooked earlier and left sitting or from being roasted too long. But, the items were plated within one minute of my order. The mashed potatoes were distinctly hand-made but had a creamy, if sour, gravy - I ate around it as much as possible and ended up leaving half of it. The black beans and rice were delicious and served piping hot. The star was the plantains which were not freshly made to order but still a nice counter to the slightly dry chicken. Décor is a fast-food atmosphere in a strip center location. The order counter has a row of booths next to it with a larger room next door with more tables and a large-screen TV showing soccer. The other staff members were enthusiastic in welcoming a new customer. Granted, I didn't stay on target and try out their fried chicken but it was a change to try out a new place with such an inauspicious name. But, the search for great fried chicken continues. This place does good food cheap and simple. The combos provide so much food. There's white or dark meat (1/4 chicken) with THREE sides and a drink! I got white meat which was moist and really good rotisserie. I got fried yucca (my favorite), cheesy corn biscuit -- weird texture for me, and fries (I would skip). You know what? I don't hate Dodo's. OK, for most people, that probably isn't saying a lot, but, really, I don't like the taste of chicken. If it ain't seasoned well, I'll gag on it. Honest. You don't wanna see me at a barbecue when there isn't any steak left. It's gross. Now Dodo's, though? Dodo's I drive across town for. My family introduced it to me via leftover boxes in the fridge while I was in high school. Last night, though, I was looking for a little something different for dinner, and Dodo's fit the bill. You get a lot for yur money there. Oh, sure, the menu is mostly in Spanish, but we live in Texas and it used to be Mexico, so get over it. Get you some pollo asado and shut up. Oh, and plantains. Do NOT under any circumstances forget the sweet plantains. Maybe it's just me and my love of hole-in-the-wall restaurants, but this place was good eats, and I'm more than a little curious about the Cuban and Colombian places next door. OK, the service isn't phenomenal, but for chicken that I actually crave, I'm willing to look past all that. I love Dodo Chicken. I wanted to get that out of the way because that is the summary of my review. So onto the filler.... Dodo's chicken is a standout rotisserie chicken (pollo asado a la brasa) cooked not over a natural gas burner but over real charcoal. While chicken is usually not a dish I ever seek, Dodo's is so exceptional that I will drive out of my way to experience their juicy/tasty/savory rotisserie goodness. After riding my motorcycle from Houston through Central America to the tip of South America, Dodo's Latin style of chicken is not only the best in Houston, but the best rotisserie chicken throughout my 15 country trip. The sides are OK but stick with the staples like black beans/rice (mixed), fried yucca, or if you want to go gringo, biscuit. Stay away from the corn on the cob, fries, and mixed vegetables. Try the arepa if you want to go colombiano style. Dodo's looks and feels like a typical fast food restaurant, but the value is fantastic ($7 for a full meal+drink at lunch) and the food phenomenal. read more

I don't care how a place looks if their food makes me feel like Scooby Doo with a biscuit when I taste it! This chicken is literally perfection... Tops my other West Coast favorites. Juice, normal sized chicken. Not pumped and huge full of hormones. Amazing, amazing "papa con sal" and yucca frita!!! They make this stuff with MAGIC! Cashier was super rude. Asked about common sides and he just looked at me like I was stupid. Asked him in then in Spanish since he didn't respond to English and he snapped back that he understood but didn't know. For everything we asked for he let out big sighs. Changed the flavor of soda choice and you would have thought we committed a huge crime. First time visiting and the experience was immediately soured by this employee. Beans and rice were good. Fried plantains okay. Chicken was flavorful but had lots of tough pieces. Won't go back to be "welcomed" by employees like that however!!! read more

I have heard about this place for years, and it is nestled in an "interesting" strip center near a place called "Pink" with a relaxing massage sign in front, and a hydroponic place across the street. We all ordered the same thing, and the first thing I tasted was the red beans and rice. MMM MMM Good! The chicken was a tad dry, but the skin was roasted, a bit crispy, and well seasoned. I've only ever been at lunch, but for about $8.00 you get chicken (white or dark), three sides AND a drink. And the sides are super extensive. There are some you have to dole out a little extra for like the sweet or green plantains, but there are so many other options, why would you bother? My standards are the black beans and rice mixed, corn on the cob, and fried yucca. Sometimes the yucca is a little better done than others, but it's usually tasty regardless. And the homemade salsas are delicious, although they change from day to day as to which actually tastes better. Sometimes green's the winner... sometimes red. It's a fun game I like to play. They also have fun items like a pile of fried green plantain with chicken and cheese piled on... I'm not sure what that's called, but it's mega tasty. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because my yellow rice was crunchy and I had to exchange it for white rice. This is my favorite go to place for something good and inexpensive. You can get a quarter chicken with 3 sides for about $8.00! The chicken is very flavorful but the vegetables have no seasoning at all. I guess that may not matter to some. My favorite side would have to be the red beans and white rice. Really love this spot! My friend took us here yesterday since we were starving and craving for Hispanic food, and I'm so glad we picked to go here. The dark meat chicken is so soft and tender and all the sides were on point! Reminded me of the Colombian chicken places I used to go to in NYC. The workers here were very friendly and helpful! If you're a PETA supporter, avert your eyes. When you first walk in, you're greeted by the delicious smell of dozens of roasted chickens rotating on a stick over some hot coals. This place serves one of the best roasted chickens in Houston. Lunch specials and family packs all are really cheap, and it comes with some great sides. Stick to the fried plantains and yucca (tastes like potato), and don't forget to drench the drier white meats in their spicy red and green sauces. Some of the workers here don't speak no Americano, so you might have to do some smiling and pointing to get your order, but don't let that stop you. read more

From the outside, and heck, even from the inside, the place doesn't look like much (appearances are the reason I give it 4 stars - this definitely isn't a first date destination). But when your food comes out you'll immediately understand what all the hype is about. This is genuinely good cooking. The chicken literally falls off the bone and it seasoned to perfection. The fried sweet plantains are delicious. Beans and rice are delicious. Even the whole red potatoes that are lightly salted and the sauces on the side to go with them are fantastic. I also really like their sides, try the red beans and rice. This place is def a dive and it has a real ethnic vibe to it (20 yr old arcade games telanovelas playing on the tube). I almost prefer a place like this that is way over due to be updated as far as the decor on the inside, bc you know it's a place where the FOOD is the focus and its going to be super cheap ($6 for a good portion of chicken, 3 sides, and a drink). Came here to try a new place as I wanted rotisserie chicken. Here are the facts: the chicken is good but nothing spectacular; I do have to say their red beans and rice are very good; the arepas were tasteless and tough. Perhaps they have been sitting around. My sister in law ( she's Colombian) makes the best arepas with cheese in the world!). I did not try their sweet plantains but they should be good. Overall, an okay place.
