I stopped by Doc's before a weekend of camping to pick up a few items to enjoy around the campfire. 1) I typically go for chopped beef and sausage, but once I saw the unique red orange hue of the ribs (something I had never seen) I knew I had to try them. They were the best ribs I have ever had. Delicious. Moist. The kind that you don't leave any behind! 2) The boudin and the sausage are a must. So satisfying and a quick fix for a Cajun treat without the drive to NOLA. Although, I didn't get to eat at Doc's I was enchanted by the decor. BBQ meets diner in the sense that James Dean photos decorated the log style wooden walls. Thanksgiving weekend in route back to San Antonio, Tx from Shreveport, LA- we decided to make a pit stop to change & feed the baby and ourselves. Doc's BBQ was a welcome alternative to What-A-Burger and Sonic. The food was set up cafeteria style. The pulled pork looked dry in the pan. Frankly speaking the sausage, the Boudin, and the potatoes were the only thing that looked worth eating. The pricing was fairly reasonable. the sausage was good, not bad but not outstanding. I definitely didn't feel as bough I wasted my money. The boudin was the same- not bad and not outstanding. There's plenty of room to soot and the decor was straight country. Ate here again on 1/17/14 while driving thru on a camping trip. It's my fourth time here and I still can't get enough. My favorite at Doc's is to get a two or three meat platter so I can get brisket (so tender--a must have), sausage (who doesn't love a nice plump sausage sandwich?) and either ribs or chicken. This time I picked up an entire rack of ribs to go for our first night of camping....after a 8-mile hike they were just heavenly beside the campfire. Doc's is my goto BBQ restaurant when I am in town. The service was great and the food is even better. My favorites are the BBQ baked potato, brisket, and ribs. There are the options of a sandwich basket, plate meal, and meat by the pound. The sandwich basket comes with a sandwich, side, and drink. The plates come with a side and beans and you can also upgrade to a baked potato. They have a good variety of sides also --coleslaw, potato salad, chips, sweet potato fries, fried okra, corn on the cob, homestyle green beans, homestyle cabbage. This place is right up there with Coppers in Mason and Franklins in Austin, The Brisket and Ribs are some of the Best We have Ever Had, Moist, tender and Flavered Just Right. Best Brisket in East Texas! I make a monthly run to Central Texas and make it a point to stop in at one of the Famous BBQ joints out there. Doc's uses the same type pit as Kruetz market and Louie Mueller's. The results are fantastic! I don't know about the rest of the menu because I can't make myself order anything else. This place is fantastic! Really enjoyed the atmosphere and food. The BBQ was on point. The sides were delicious. Even the dessert is fresh and homemade. We go to Doc's from Huntsville every 3 weeks or so. We only get the brisket, untrimmed and always take a couple pounds home with us. It's always worth the trip. Never eat the sides or other meats, so can't comment on them. read more
