Just passing through here to catch a late lunch. We were thoroughly impressed. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. Interior was rustic, clean, and well maintained. Brisket and sausage were comparable to any of the well known Texas bbq establishments (and that's saying a lot!) The bark on the brisket was thick and flavorful. They didn't have too many side options but the pinto beans were very good. read more

Awesome food. Literally the best barbecue I've ever had and I don't even like barbecue.

Shared a two meat plate that comes with 2 sides. Incredible real BBQ! I see why it's so highly rated.

Everytime I'm in the Rusk area and in need of good barbecue, I always hit this place up. Their facility is pretty modern and the setting is comfortable. They just started their market patron signatures on their wooden walls and let people sign their names on it. When you walk into the building, you'll be automatically situated in the line to order. The line can be a long one if you come in at the high traffic time. Food wise their ribs are fall off the bone and filled with the oh so smoky flavors. Their brisket is another strong choice as well with its moist cuts and peppery flavors, there really is no wrong choice. Pricing remains reasonable and you'll have a good time here with the food. read more

Oh my, this was some DELICIOUS BBQ!!! Some friends and I were visiting Jacksonville over the weekend, and we went to JW's Barbecue for lunch. The sliced brisket and pulled pork were all amazing. We would have preferred toasted buns, but it certainly wasn't a deal breaker. The staff was friendly and the restaurant was clean. We will definitely eat at JW's on our next trip to Jacksonville. Yum! Yum! read more

This place is definitely off the beaten path but so good! My husband was traveling for work and after hours of driving decided to grab a meal snack. The best bought brisket we've had was Blacks, and this was comparable, possibly better. We got it to go and forgot a fork; it was so hard to grab because it just fell apart (in a good way!). Incredibly juicy and tender. The macaroni was sooo good, creamy with fantastic flavor. Everyone there was warm, friendly, and welcoming. I highly recommend if you come out here! read more

This is legit BBQ. There is no other true bbq place in and around the east Texas Tyler area that does a better job than JW's. Stanelys is good but JW's is where you go for a true Texas BBQ style meal...I have never been disappointed on any of my visits here.....they always spot on everytime read more

I saw a post on Instagram of their cheesecake with brisket on it a year ago, and saved it. I couldn't get the thought out of my mind of how interesting that was! Like, how does that work? So last week, I decided the time had come and with a friend drove three hours to try it. My fantastic experience began by DM'ing the owner on Instagram just to verify they were still serving the cheesecake. Since I mentioned we were traveling so far, he took our order ahead of time so we would be assured food by the time we arrived. The food did not disappoint! It was incredible! The ribs, the creamy macaroni and cheese = . And that cheesecake? Yes, brisket topped cheesecake was worth the trip! The townspeople in the restaurant were quiet and peaceful. The staff the same. We felt welcome there. Everyone was very polite. I can't speak highly enough of JW's. Unfortunately it's a little out of reach for frequenting, but anytime I'm in East Texas, it will be the place to go! Dreaming of that macaroni and cheese now... read more

Great service. Very friendly and helpful. Loved the atmosphere. First time I was there, I got the chopped beef sandwich. I didn't realize it would be so peppery. Good flavor but I can't do much hot and spicy. The next time I got pulled pork sandwich and it was delicious. read more

We passed 3 other BBQ places to get to this one. I read another review comparing it to Blacks. Well if ya know... ya know. My grandfather was born and raised in Lockhart TX. The brisket did not disappoint the sausage was good nothing like Lockhart but definitely good. The owner offered us cheesecake it tasted homemade and definitely worth saving room for. The staff was friendly and made conversation with everyone. If you are in the area I would recommend stopping. read more

JW's Barbecue - Outside - Barbeque Near Me - Jacksonville, Texas

I'm from Phoenix, currently living in Colorado, so I haven't had many encounters with GOOD (emphasis on GOOD) barbecue, but man this is some of the best barbecue i've had in my life. The pulled pork, the brisket, the turkey, the sides. All of it was AMAZING. The atmosphere of the place was really cool, and it smelled amazing. It pains me that we don't have barbecue places even remotely close to as good in Denver because I will be seeing the brisket in my dreams from now on My only gripe was that the line is quite slow, but the food was so good it doesn't affect my review at all. 5 stars read more

This BBQ restaurant is well removed from the interstate, so heavily dependent financially on support from the local community. To judge from what I experienced over lunch, it is well regarded-- and with good reason. $23.37 purchased a quarter pound of fatty brisket, a jalapeno cheddar sausage, and sides of elote and squash/zucchini. A refillable soft drink (unsweetened tea) rounded out the order. The brisket features moist and tender meat with exceptional bark. This is a great bite-- and don't hesitate to ask for a bit of burnt end, which is truly meat candy! The sausage has great balance and snap. It is one of the best of its kind to be found in Texas, and this is a highly competitive market. Both sides were dead on. And as is so often the case in the universe of small town BBQ, the price point is more than fair. Make an effort to get here, and do try and beat the noontime crowd. It's worth the effort; owner and pitmaster Jonathan Wilson is putting out a product that rivals the best in The Lone Star State. read more

Delicious pit-smoked BBQ! Homemade sides and desserts, and gluten-free options also. Owners are friendly and have visited with us both times we have been in- very knowledgeable about gluten-free issues. Make sure you get here before they run out- we have come about 2pm and they only have brisket and pulled pork left. Today they had a lot of sides left, but last time they only had a couple to choose from. read more

My daughter got the pull pork and cheese and jalapeño sausage. We also got side potato salad and corn elote. Everything we got was very good ! . I've tried Salt Lick , CountyLine , Iron Works , Heritage, Bad to the Bone, Stanley's and now JW 's . The service was great and people were friendly and helpful when ordering. The place was clean and comfortable places to sit and enjoy some nice bbq for lunch . They even have Dr Pepper with that pure cane sugar glass bottle . And it must be good all the local police and sheriffs eat their No Donuts for them . Great place can't wait to go back next time I am in town. read more

Visiting from TN, and had the opportunity to eat at JW's. Five stars is not enough for this place. Greeted at the door by the owner and staff. Ordered the brisket a couple of ribs and the elote. When ordering the brisket, I was asked if I wanted it fatty or lean. I appreciate having the option. Chose the fatty. It had an amazing flavor and bark. Ribs were good as well as the elote. Amazingly friendly staff. Chatted with the owner about barbecue in TN. Highly recommend, and will definitely be back when I am in the area. read more

East TX gem! Excellent bbq and sides. Go early for the best selection as they were already out of some things when we were there (around 12:30 on a Saturday). Turkey sandwich did not let me down and my husband had the Devil Dog sandwich and loved it. Delicious meat with great smoke flavor and bold seasoning. Generous portions. We tried the potato salad - which has a unique, peppery flavor and the Mac & Cheese - both were very good. Family run sort of place - very clean and friendly. read more

Awesome barbecue and tasty sides. Staff is super nice and the place is clean and quaint

Most BBQ places I go to have good BBQ but so so sides that taste like store bought. Not so at JW's the sides are really good & my favorite lean sliced brisket sandwich is piled high with great taste & flavor. Also a choice of sweet or spicy sauce both of which just add to the flavor without overpowering it. Also doesn't hurt that JW's service is friendly & welcoming. Highly recommend! read more

Definitely a locals favorite but only 4 stars cuz they don't make this place exactly easy to patronize with their very selective hours (I still don't really know what they are) and closing "when they sell out"--what restaurant does that?? They do! Doesn't it work the other way around? Don't restaurants prepare food in accordance with demand? I mean, I realize it's freshly smoked bbq that's probably put in the night before and all, but buy more meat or a bigger smoker! 23 Lucille's doesn't seem to have a problem with it. Ok, well now I've got that out of my system--whew--be sure to make it there before 2pm just to be safe. And if it's dinner you want, too bad, just get take-out! Because their meat is freaking fantastic!! Brisket (lean or fatty, your choice) is the BEST we've ever had!l...I mean toe-curling deliciouThe ribs are fall-off-the-bone delectable and they also offer Turkey and sausage. Hubby likes the sweet Q sauce and I like the spicy (naturally!) The sides are delicious, too, but only an accompaniment to the utterly fantastic smoked meats. We'd eat here every week but the budget won't allow it--$42.00 for a moderate two-person dinner. read more
