**Celiac's Review** It's right by the bay and has the perfect food to compliment the best patio-only/outdoor dining atmosphere in Sandusky, Ohio. The menu consists of items such as fish tacos, walleye, perch, burgers, salads...etc. Great food, however, I'm limited to what I can eat there due to having celiacs.
While I cannot speak about the whole menu, I do know that the salads are great and the nachos are always a, "go-to," of mine. I can no longer eat their chicken nachos because they changed spices this year and the new spices contain gluten...the awesome part...as soon as I told them I have celiacs, they knew this and told me about it. So, while this is not an all gluten-free restaurant (which are extremely rare to find anyway), they are VERY, VERY knowledgeable in helping me choose the menu items I can eat, as well as accommodate as much as possible for any/all of my dietary constraints. Before you order, just mention that you have celiacs and/or any food sensitivity or allergy and they will make sure all cross-contamination is limited as much as possible.
I really like it when they feature their grilled fish tacos (I think they have them on the featured menu almost everyday). They allow me to order the grilled fish tacos (they modify the spices on the tilapia for me because they contain gluten), but make it into a nacho dish. So I'm able to enjoy all of the awesome ingredients of their fish tacos, in nacho form. They modify this menu item for me because their tacos have gluten but the tortilla chips used in the nachos are gluten-free. If you ever have question of any particular ingredient, I'm sure they'd be happy to allow you to take a look at the ingredient list provided by the manufacturer...because they care about the well-being of each customer. For those of you who are able to eat gluten, they do have a wider variety of great menu items.
Andrea Avallone and her husband own Dockside Cafe, as well as Crush Winebar, Hearth Tavern and ZINC Brasserie, which are all fine dining restaurants with menu items that will surely bring delight to your palate. Please do keep in mind, that Dockside Cafe is a very relaxed dining experience with all outside patio seating. Given all of their other restaurants provide the, "fine dining," experience, you would be correct to infer that high standards of menu items and service are very important to them, even in the more relaxed dining experience. To clearly state it...the dining atmosphere and menu are VERY different from their other restaurants, however, the quality and flavor are still great!
HANDS-DOWN, Dockside Cafe provides the best outside dining atmosphere in downtown Sandusky! Check out their fb page, as they have live acoustic musicians playing on different nights of the week, AND every Wednesday is ladies' night! If you're headed there for the first time and have difficulty finding Dockside Cafe, just ask around to the locals and/or local businesses and someone will be able to easily point you in the right direction. While it is easy to locate via address, it may appear a bit hidden to those who are not familiar with the location but it is well worth your time and effort to stop and ask someone for help/directions! Chances are whomever you'd stop to ask, will just point toward the water and you'll realize you've been staring at it from the parking lot of where your GPS has taken you. :) read more
