I was walking around the Avondale area recently and decided to stop in after I noticed I had this place bookmarked. I have never played a single D&D game and don't have a ton of knowledge about the game, but I really admire any bar or restaurant that has a solid theme. I sat at the bar near the front of DMen Tap and was instantly impressed by the amount of mead wines they offered. I haven't come across that many bars and restaurants in Chicago that offer mead at all. The fact that Dmen had at least 4 or 5 when I was there was great. I tried this really good one from a meadery in Michigan and then a second one that was from Denmark. They also offer many beers and have cocktails on their menu. To eat, I ordered the cheese curds (Came with a delicious curry tomato dipping sauce) and one of their doner bowls. Both food items were excellent. I need to find out if they have a spicy type sauce for the bowl next time I am there as I like some spice. Dmen has low key vibes, fair pricing, and is located close to public transportation. Cool, it's a Dungeons & Dragons themed bar. DMen Tap is the bar for the geeks it seems. It actually has a pretty big menu of things, many which are good for vegans and vegetarians. Big portions that make the prices seem not that bad for how much food. The bar of course has plenty of games to play so you have something to do while sitting and waiting After being familiar about the food truck and hearing it was now a brick and mortar restaurant, it was time for us to head over and have some drinks, food, and fun. It's a little dark as expected, but not so much to creep anyone out. The bar is the main place to sit, and there's also a few tables. It's about $12 for a cocktail. The PBJT is blackberry liqueur with lemon, simple syrup, and Skrewball. As for the food, it can be expensive but the portions help a bit. It's about $16 for the Doner Kebabs. Choose to get it in a box or over fries. This is topped with cabbage, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, greens, harissa, onions, and pickles. Also you get a protein choice. We got the vegan protein, which was seitan with hummus and tahini. Quite a lot to eat. This was good and filling. Good bar for those liking this type of atmosphere. Best vegan doner in the city. I mean, it might be the only vegan doner but still. Really though, all the food is really solid and decently priced, and it's a perfect dive bar. Great space in the back and I've had a bunch of cool local groups have meetings there. Good beer, and when I got a malort shot with my date, the bartender and another guy at the bar had some friendly banter about it. Then the other guy ended up ordering a shot of it for himself. On our first day in Chicago, my partner happened upon their Fae Days & DMen Nights event, so glad she did. The bar is cozy and uniquely decorated. Definitely our vibe - weird, yet welcoming. There is bar, table, and booth seating, plus an additional area in the back past the restrooms, which is where the event was set up. There, my partner and son made flower crowns. They loved it. There were other kids hanging out in their flower crowns also. They offer their own craft beer, which was tasty, among other options, including a full bar and food. The service was extremely friendly and engaging. It was a great first stop to enjoy a wonderful event in a friendly and decorative environment while playing oversized Uno and drinking a couple of cold craft beers. read more

Venue: Great place for all us nerds out there! This is is a dnd themed bar! They have game rooms you can use, open dnd nights, magic the gathering nights, and a number of board games available for play- and totally doable to bring your own game. This place has it all for us gamers! But...it's a little small. With more space this place could be incredible! Drinks: They don't brew any of their own drinks and the tap list is fairly limited. But there is plenty of variety and an option or two for all. Food: Shockingly good! Definitely would eat here again. Would we go back? Yes!!! I got a vegan doner wrap and poutine for delivery. The wrap was so delicious. The seitan was flavorful and had a soft texture, which was unexpected as seitan can sometimes be too hard. Everything about it was delicious, from the pillowy wrap to the gherkin inside. The poutine was a curry gravy. It's heavy, but that's what's satisfying about poutine. read more

I really don't understand the hype with this place. While I was initially impressed with the ingredients, I was sorely disappointed. I lived in Berlin for years and fell in love with their street food. This doesn't even come close to authentic, at least for the Doener. Typical Doener is not made within a Yafka wrap, whatever that is. A more crispy type of bread is used instead. Not to mention the entire contents of the wrap were extremely bland. I hope they make efforts to more closely resemble the real thing before advertising Berliner Imbiss. Very disappointed read more

Welcome to the neighborhood, Dmen Tap! I am so happy to have a great new option in the 'hood with great guys running the place, an awesome beer selection and some good eats. What was once Square Bar is now so wonderfully redone and just has so much more appeal than it did just 6 months ago! I love what they've done with the place. Everything is so much more clean, more fresh, better designed...I really like it. It's a great atmosphere with friendly staff and a music level that is palatable and isn't blaring any horrific music. Good tunes are being played from their record player behind the bar. Their beer selection is on point! As a beer chick, I highly appreciated the fact that I hadn't tried half of their beers on tap. I believe the draft selection was 8 brews (plus a bunch more in bottles/cans) and I tried a couple of amazing options while there - FFF Stack N Stabb and Tribes Oak Aged Twin, both strong & amazing beers. I could see myself coming here solo quite often and bellying up to the bar for a brewski. They feature some hard to find beers, that's fo' sho'! This is definitely going to become a great neighborhood spot for me. (Update 2 days later: the beers have already rotated with new cool brews, and here I sit at the bar. I'm psyched they seem to be constantly changing their beers. I fear this is what'll make me a regular ) In case you aren't familiar, DönerMen has been a food truck in Chicago for quite some time and is honestly one of the most popular trucks in the city. Well now...the popular DönerMen food truck has opened DönerMen Tap (DMen Tap for short) to serve all us lovely people their German/Turkish street type foods and great beers at a brick & mortar. Their food setup is interesting and I'm sure will evolve over time. Right now you order food up at their window which you can eat right in DMen or take to go. I've only tried their Donner Salad and Currywurst so far but I can highly recommend both. The sausage in the currywurst was so juicy and delicious! I absolutely loved it. The curry topping the dog was a bit spicy but in all the best ways, didn't burn my mouth and gave good flavor. It came with a huge portion of fries, too much so for me in one portion but I'm sure a perfect amount for others to munch on while sipping their drinks. There isn't a ton on the menu just yet, but as I mentioned I'm interested to see what happens time goes on. I mean, tonight is OPENING NIGHT!!! And for opening night, I have to say DMen Tap was operating like a well oiled machine without any kinks. I've been to quite a few openings and this was high & above others I've attended. Really though, DMen Tap is a great new addition to our area on the border of Avondale and Logan Square on Belmont. I'm soooooo~ happy to have such great guys running a great business for us! If you're looking to get possessed by a demon, go find a local coven or haunted graveyard or misty forest or Catholic School to get the experience you're looking for. Very disappointed that our doner boxes over fries were not salted at all. Also, the portions were A LOT smaller than they used to be. There were hardly any fries which I was surprised to see. The chicken was good though. I've eaten here several times pre covid and was always happy with the food and portion sizes. I understand restaurants are having a hard time but this was unacceptable. Doner box over fries with chicken! Get it! It will not disappoint!

Enjoyed my first visit to try out Donermen at the DMen Tap bar. I like the space, and the way the food window feels like ordering from the food truck at the back of the bar. Came by solo for dinner yesterday. Friendly bartender, friendly food window guy, nice guy who checked my ID. I came during the happy hour portion of the day (8-10 PM, Sun-Thur), so my old fashioned was half off. Clearly, DMen Tap is a beer bar, so while I'm not the beer snob many of my Chicago friends are/claim to be, I was just fine surfing the menu here. I got an order of the currywurst; while I thought it was tasty, I was hoping for more heat/spice from the curry. Also, I wouldn't have been offended if they dropped just a freakin ton of the sauce all over the fries...as it was, I had a lot of unloved fries, in terms of curry coverage. The meat is tasty and crazy tender, and for $9 you get a lot of food. The value proposition is fantastic. I actually want to try this next from the original food truck floating around the city, to get one of the other signatures on this menu. While I enjoyed my experience, I'm not about to stab a friend to get another round of currywurst, but my three friends who hit DMen on Monday loved their meal, so I'm sure I'm the outlier here. read more

The vibe of the bar is a cross between a dive and your local neighborhood bar. It's great, a tad on the small size, but it doesn't really need to be more. The bartenders are all awesome. Sean/Shawn the owner is awesome. We hopped in on a random Thursday night. It was Labyrinth soundtrack on vinyl night. So, there was a larger than normal crowd...and it was a nice night out. Just beware of that first step. It's a doozy. We also happened to walk in during happy hour (which was about to end at 10. There's a small tap list, but it's full of awesome craft beers. They also have other beer, but why would you want those? There is bar seating. There's a booth in the back corner for a slightly bigger party. Then, there's seating against the windows and walls. This place is pretty damn awesome and they also have pretty decent prices. Heck, they even serve food. The menu isn't large by any means, but it all looked delicious. I'm definitely going back and trying it. I hear they also have a food truck. TLDR: this place is definitely worth checking out. read more

Came here last weekend on a bit of a bar crawl with some friends. I had no idea this place was so cool! Good beer and cocktail selection, and the counter service food is a great idea. We had the za'atar pita and a doer bowl. Both were really good, personally I would have doubled up on the amount of za'atar on the bread, but I'm used to it and could see how it may be a bit much for some. The doner box was awesome (albeit a littttttle skimpy on the meat for the price). I had been to the food truck before but never knew they had this location. Went here last Friday night with a friend for dinner and a beer. Loved the Dungeons and Dragons -esque theme. Fits right in with Kuma's across the street. Drinks you order at the bar and food you order at the back window. Went with a Doner bowl with lamb and split an order of curry fries. Bowl was good overall, although a bit overpriced at $12. Really enjoyed the mix of spices and flavors, but felt the lamb was a bit overdone. Plain ole fries with some sauce on top for $6 was also a bit steep. Good, not great, food at those prices plus an underwhelming draft list leads me to 3 stars. Glad I tried it but not itching to go back. read more

I really feel bad about writing this review given that everyone seems to have a great experience. I just could not feel it. My wife and I walked in and I stood there waiting for direction. No one came ( it was also not busy), I finally made eye contact with the bartender who and I asked " do we just take a seat?" She gave me a weird look and nodded her head yes. We sat down and waited for a waiter for about 5 minute. Then the bartender said you can get beer here and food at the window. We went to the window, look at the options. Let me break down some things that can be a little confusing. DMen Tap is the name of the BAR. Donermen is the name of FOOD WINDOW. They both exist in the same building space, but you give your money for your drinks and your money for your food in different places in the same room. Got it? Cool. Now, for the actual review, which focuses primarily on Donermen since we went at lunchtime. You order at a window that very much honors and imitates Donermen's roots as a food truck. The menu is small but I generally see that as a good thing (better to do a few things really well than a bunch of things just OK). The food melds Turkish and German cuisnes, but feels much more Middle-Eastern than European in final execution. But what is borrowed from Germany is essential: wonderful, delicious greasyness and heavyness. This is essentially Mediterranean "drunk" food. I got the doner wrap and it was delightful, filling, messy, and unique. Just make sure you've got a piece of gum handy for after your meal. The prices are fair and reasonable for the neighborhood. The overall aesthetic of the space is dark but artistic, blending gritty art with classic dive bar accents. The look inside matches the neighboring Kuma's Corner nicely. I'm really excited to have these people in the neighborhood, and I hope they can make it last! read more

Just ordered food from here for delivery. We had a veggie item and a sausage item, both with a side of fries and curry sauce. The taste overall was quite good, and the curry sauce was tasty without being spicy. When you order delivery, there is a specific part of the menu that has "Gluten Free" by each item, which made it very easy to order for our house's food allergies. They were good about the written-in requests I added, and everything we ordered was written on the bag. read more

And then comes the food...I tried currywurst a couple times when I was in Berlin, hoping to understand why people go crazy for it. I did not understand. But having the currywurst here in entirely different thing. Sausage unlike you'll find anywhere else. Fresh potato french fries. The ketchup/curry mix is some kind of delicious that I'd like to put on everything. And we also had the Doner salat with vegetables. OMG it had harissa and yogurt on grilled vegetables and super fresh greens. It was awesome. Love this place. Great neighborhood vibe, too. Do it. read more

Come here for the happy hour Sunday-Thursday 8-10 pm for half off drinks! Kuma's Corner told us it'd be an hour wait so we came over here to have a few half-off drinks! They've done a great job renovating Square Bar and adding the Doner Truck to the kitchen. We didn't eat the food, but if it's the same quality as the truck, I'm sure the currywurst is similarly delicious! The bartenders were knowledgeable about the beer, cider, and cocktails on the menu an helped the four of us choose our ideal drink. What a great addition to the neighborhood! This bar is close to Reed's Local and RIGHT next to Bucket O'Blood Books & Records, the Beer Temple and Kuma's--I could spend all day in this one block of Avondale! The bar itself is extremely inviting; there is a comfortable, neighborhood vibe. I hung out for a few hours and had such a wonderful time! The music was perfect, great tunes and a great sound system-it wasn't too loud like most bars; it was loud enough to enjoy but still hold a nice conversation without yelling at the person next to you. They were playing records on a turntable behind the bar, which I thought was pretty cool and I am hoping in the future they will host BYOVinyl nights. There are two gender neutral bathrooms that were well maintained and even had complimentary tampons by the sink--how incredibly thoughtful! There were hooks under the bar for my purse and also outlets to charge your phone. All of the staff were really friendly and easy going. My order was taken right away and I was checked in on regularly. The food is ordered at a window and then you get a buzzer that goes off when it's ready and you just go pick it up. If you are familiar with the food truck, then there's no surprises here--it's a small menu but everything is delicious! I had the doner kabab and it was HUGE, way too much food for just me so I shared with my friend and then we got some curry fries too--SO GOOD! I've had the salad before and it is probably my favorite thing on the menu but I think the poutine will be perfect for late at night after several drinks. The menu is not vegetarian friendly right now, but it seems like they might add on items in the future. The cocktail list seems really unique, there were twists on cocktails that I haven't seen at other bars. The sazarac cocktail was very good, but I'm more of a beer drinker so I stuck mostly to the tap list. They had an IPA from local brewers Miskatonic that is really good and some solid offerings from Three Floyds as well. They had more than one option for cheap beers too, which I really appreciate AND for $2 more you can turn any cheap beer into a Michelada--GENIUS! Basically, I am thrilled that DMen has joined the neighborhood and I will be here often for sure.
