Not as good as double knot but definitely delicious for the location it is at. The price is pretty hefty $$$ (big complaint brought up from previous reviewers) but it's reasonable. You are paying for the brand and also the location. Prices are comparable to the other stands in the food hall. I always assume I'm going to spend around $12-16 going into that cafeteria regardless of which stand I eat at. Anyway, my sushi was good but the amount I got was so little I'm not sure if it was worth it. I didn't go too crazy in ordering. I just wanted a test try. I got a toro scallion roll and also an eel roll. The order came in a nice box, I attached a picture. It's pretty cute: arranged neatly and colorful. Some people complained about the stuffing:rice ratio. I thought it was pretty half and half - not too much rice (attached some close ups). The toro scallion roll was average 3/5. But the eel roll was so good- still warm when I ate it 5/5! But ...not sure if 2 pieces was worth the $6. I want to try the eat your own fish boxes and one of the rice bowls next time. I remember the first time I came to DK Sushi and ordered a really overpriced shrimp tempura roll and was very unimpressed. I came back a year or two later after being recommended the Omakase and was B L O W N away. Filling, fresh, authentic, for only $35 - woweee. Yes, it's assumed you wouldn't come to Franklin Table for its ambience - it's a college dining hall for heaven's sake, but are you really a foodie if you're not willing to sacrifice ambience for hidden gems? I came to DK Sushi for omakase a week after I went to Sakana which was $58/pp and left so hungry I went and got a full Italian meal after. After DK's omakase, I was so full I could barely walk home. Despite being in a college dining hall, DK makes an effort to serve each dish on a stone platter with impeccable plating. Also, no one's rushing you so you really have the true opportunity to focus on the food and whoever you're dining with. 10/10 would recommend. TLDR: I would give a 3.5/5 technically. In general the service was quick and the sushi quality itself was decent for the price you pay. When you walk up to their storefront, you order on a screen so the ordering process was quick and simple. I ordered the "Eat your fancy fish" and I highly enjoyed their quality and aesthetically pleasing packaging. 10/10 for sure for takeout boxes. The sushi rice was slightly under seasoned; it wasn't as sweet or vinegary as sushi rice should be. As for fish itself, it was good for the price you pay. It wasn't expensive so obviously I didn't expect Japan sushi grade quality, but since it's decently priced sushi I definitely think it was worth it's price range. My favorite piece of sushi in the box was the scallop sushi, so I would highly recommend that one if you just wanted to just try something out. read more

I like this place - it's not bad. It's just $$$ for students - which are their primary clientele. I'd come here if I want to splurge on a sushi box or a spicy scallop roll. Generally fresh - I've had a few of their items like their salmon-based chef box (cute presentation/unnecessary for extra cost though), a few of their rolls, their bowls and more. Maybe because I am not a big fan of Double Knot so I don't find it super special but I think if you're looking for a quick sushi fix but don't mind spending the money, then it's the place to go. read more

The organization is a little messy but it's all on a kiosk so once you're ready to order go up to the computer and order. The food is a little pricey but it's definitely worth a try. This Double Knot sushi satellite eatery is located in the new and posh Franklin Hall "food court". I went with a coworker over lunch to try it out. Though there was a small line, it went by quickly. The menu has a lot of sushi options but the "chef's box" seemed like the best deal. $16 for 2 pieces of salmon sashimi, salmon over rice, edamame, and 2 rolls. Definitely a splurge for lunch but I decided to treat myself. The meal is packed neatly in a cute little DK box. All the sides (wasabi, ginger, soy sauce, a spicy sauce) are in their own labeled containers. VERY aesthetically pleasing, not very environmentally friendly. This is what really annoyed me: for that giant box of $16 sushi, you get one little pea size amount of wasabi (pictured). Granted, I am a wasabi fiend but how can they possibly think that small amount is enough for all that sushi? I kindly asked for more wasabi and was told it would be a 50 cent charge by the manager. I can *maybe* understand if I ordered one roll or a couple pieces of sashimi but that was just annoying and unacceptable. The sushi itself was unbelievable. The fish was so fresh and abundant and the rice was incredible. Definitely way too much food for one person but would be perfect to split with someone. My favorite was the salmon over rice with spicy sauce! Though I'll never spend $16 on a lunch again, would definitely come back and order salmon over rice on its own. I tried the salmon-based "chef's box" for dinner which included two small salmon rolls, two small pieces of sushi, a serving of salmon over rice, steamed edamame, and small dessert (maybe coconut-based?) all for $16! Not bad for a filling amount of tasty sushi. Each piece was tasty, and the salmon was buttery on the tongue. The cashier was polite and speedy, as well. My food was ready in under ten minutes. My only complaint is that the soy sauce container became hard to dip into towards the end of my meal; the pieces of the rolls just fit when it was full, and by the end, I had started to run low on sauce. Looking for a great budget omakase in Philadelphia? Look no further than DK Sushi in the Franklin's Table Food Hall on the Penn campus! For just $35, the meal changes slightly every day and allows the different chefs assigned to particular days to express their vision and creativity. My dinner companion, Ken, was hesitant at first on trying all the different fishes, but was open-minded enough to dive right in. Our chef, Zion, started our meals with two tried and true omakase courses - tuna tartare and hamachi ceviché - along with a special miso soup with shrimp tempura. From there, our chef churned out plates of traditional sushi, two or three pieces at a time. The sea urchin and scallops were delightful, light, and refreshing. The toro, really a chu-toro, and yellowtail toro had good flavors. I prefer fatty cuts of fish over lean cuts. The Kobe and ikura were the chef's play on "surf and turf" and were melt in your mouth good and squishy bubbles of salty delight! The toro scallion roll almost served as a palate cleanser for the intense flavors of the final dish, a miso foi gras mini hand roll and eel sushi. I could eat ten of the foie gras sushi! The incredible thing about all of the sushi is the sushi rice was warm and perfectly seasoned. Warm rice is the only way to eat sushi! Big kudos to Chef Zion for using the available ingredients to craft a very nice omakase meal. read more

A solid Double Knot satellite location inside of Franklin's Table food hall on Penn's campus. The menu is pretty varied, with rolls, sushi, sashimi, rice bowls, and combination boxes. I ordered a Yellowtail Scallion Roll and Salmon Avocado Roll, plus the pickled cucumber salad. Everything was fresh and tasted great. I especially loved the pickled cucumber salad. Service was super friendly and easy going. This location used to serve Taco Bell tacos but now it is expensive sushi. Cash is not allowed at this location now which I am told discriminates against poor people. Taco Bell was 5 stars but had very sticky edges on the tables. DK has nicer tables that don't get sticky when cleaned, but still one star for not offering a $5 box that includes a drink. read more

Really surprised by the negative early reviews of this spot. The sushi rice is the signature delicious rice from Double Knot in Center City that sets it apart from all other sushi places in Philly. Everything is packaged beautifully, & the sauces on the side are delicious. I've literally had lunch here 3 days in a row since realizing they were open. I highly recommend the "Over Rice" bowls. The tuna over rice is basically the tuna tartare from Double Knot & a great amount of food for $9 & the sauce it comes with is stellar. Compare the prices to the other mediocre sushi places in UCity (Ochatto does a 2 sushi roll lunch special for $10, Pod is WAY overpriced because it's a Starr restaurant, Hai Street sushi burritos are $10+) & you'll see you're really only paying $1/$2 more for food that is better quality. Or, split a chef box with someone & you're golden. There are only a couple places in Philly that really do sushi right & this is now one of them. Update: Since opening this is still a go-to every week for lunch but there have been instances where the sushi quality was subpar. At worst, it's still better than everywhere you can get sushi in UCity but it's important to distinguish between the unmatched quality of the OG Double Knot. read more

The staff are quite friendly and helpful, and you don't have to wait too long for the food. Holy crap, we had an awesome time here. We did the $35 customized lunch and got a lot of special attention. The chef (Yun) was from Puerto Rico but had spent time in NC and we talked some about that. The sushi started out terrific and just got more creative and tasty from there. The flavor combinations were not only creative, but sensibly ordered so that they complemented eachother, culminating in what felt like a gourmet meal from appetizer to dessert. The slightly odd feeling of sitting at a campus dining hall take away counter at Penn State quickly diminished as we realized we were getting the best seats and the best deal in the house. We have been here three times, but this is the first time that I had a chance to review the location, food, and service. This location and menu is relatively well hidden because it's not on their main menu signage. In fact, you would only see it if you sat on the row and saw the modest card with the price and menu. At $35, yes $35, you can have the chef prepare you a delightful omakase. The meal varies each time based on ingredient availability and also the chef. Prior to this meal, we had come about 6 months ago, and had a phenomenal experience. The manager, Mindy, curated the meal for us. She let us know what was available and what was not. She also interacted with us throughout the meal and gave us some insight about each of the Dishes she was serving. She also asked about how we were doing throughout the meal. One of the really great highlights of that meal was a soft shell crab hand roll. Unfortunately, on this experience it was nearly the complete opposite. The chef interacted with us only to let us know about what was being served. Although he asked about our food allergies, he did not let us know that some of the items that were on the menu were not available including the uni. Fortunately, we did not want that uni but we expected to have something equivalent to that. We were taken aback when the final dish was a standard California roll. It was nice that some of the other nigiri dishes were doubled up to make up for what was lacking, but so many dishes were served at once that the Experience was lackluster, and felt rushed. I guess the secret is out now, but we don't plan on returning. We also asked the cashier about our previous experience with the manager Mindy, and were told that she, sadly, no longer work for the business. read more

The presentation is beautiful, but the sushi is smaller than most other places I've been to, and the taste was completely overwhelmed by the amount of vinegar in the rice. The rice was HOT, which was disgusting and careless of the chefs and not how I expect my sushi to be. I don't want to eat warm raw fish. The rolls were so carelessly put together, only 1/3 of them were dressed with the proper spicy mayo topping.
