Dragon Roll, Crunchy Spicy Tuna Roll, Sashimi Sampler
Abraham K.

Very elegant and quiet sushi spot. Fast and friendly service. Sushi rice was solid and the fish was fresh. Prices were pretty up there though ($15+).

Went for a night out in the city and this restaurant did not disappoint! The service was fast, the food was fresh, and the portions were great! The restaurant is in a great part of the city, being a block away from some of the major concert venues and theaters. The bathrooms, while clean, are like closets! They're so tiny!! Overall would eat here again!

Stopped by after work and ordered a few rolls to share - very solid sushi spot, nothing extraordinary

Banana tempura

This is probably my new favorite Japanese place in Philly after having searched for so long for an authentic one in Center City! We got there at 8pm on a Friday and were seated right away. We ordered a tempura sampler, a sushi regular set, and Japanese steak. The tempura came out warm and crisp. The hilight of the night was sushi -- thick fresh slice of fish on a small bed of perfectly cooked rice (reminds me of Sushi Yasaka in NYC). Pardon me, my mouth is watering as I'm writing this. The steak was also yum. Plus, the ambience is great and service is also on point! We forgot to take pictures of food, but attached is a photo of banana tempura, which deserves honorable mention.

Crunchy Spicy Tuna Roll, California Roll, Cucumber Roll

Great sushi! It's a hidden gem with a classy ambiance and welcoming staff. Would recommend!

We stopped here for dinner and I think this is a pretty good spot. It's a standard sushi restaurant located in the city tucked away in the corner. It's really easy to walk past this place and never notice it at all.

Came here on a recent Friday night. The place is classic and intimate. I liked how they don't try to be "trendy," the interior is just a typical nice sushi place. It's quiet and felt like we weren't actually in the city. Now on to the food - we got the wasabi shumai which was delicious and spicy. We also got a few rolls and some individual sushi pieces. Everything was really tasty and fresh with really good attention to detail - they topped the rolls with some kind of delicious spice and sauce mix. I would definitely come back here, but my only complaint is the size of the rolls. They were noticeably smaller than rolls at most other places. Definitely a little expensive for the small size. Still, good enough food that I'd return.

One of the best Japanese Sushi bar restaurant in Philly that did not break the bank account! We were completely surprise with this restaurant, we were expecting that this place is just another Americanized Japanese restaurant. But lo, from appetizers to main entrée the dishes are simply epicurean. We started of with traditional miso soup to warm our stomachs, we then served with Hamachi Kama a delicious Yellowtail and Salmon collar and Salmon blossom salad with crawfish and seaweed paired with hot bottle of house Sake. For main entrée I decided to have Chirashi served with sushi rice. All in all, it was a lovely dinner while visiting Philadelphia. Dishes are fresh, flavorful and as I've said, it was reasonably priced.

Chirashi bowl

Service is great, but can't say the same about the food. From the looks of it, this is a Chinese owned Japanese restaurant. I've only had the chirashi bowl and the udon lunch set. The chirashi bowl, which I had for dinner, is pretty filling. I can't remember the price, but I remember thinking it was expensive. The fish did not taste very fresh to me and I've definitely had better chirashi bowls in my lifetime. However, it's also not the worst. I wouldn't ever order it again, but it may taste okay for people who have less sensitive stomachs than I. The udon lunch set comes with a California roll. My entire meal came out to be $16 with tax and tip, which again, I felt was not worth it considering how easy it is to make (what I assumed was packaged) udon and how small the roll was. The udon is not soft and tasted like packaged udon that had been sitting in the freezer for months and is also very very bland. The soup is also VERY bland, although I actually found that part to be refreshing. The California roll was hastily made. It tasted like a typical California roll, so not much to comment on that except that it tasted like it had a little too much sodium. On a positive note, the service was great. The people who worked here were very nice and concerned that I did not enjoy my dish. I wish that the food was as good as the service, but it did not match up.

Philly Roll & Rock and Roll

What a hidden gem. We stumbled upon Shiroi Hana while aimlessly walking around trying to find dinner on a rainy night. I did a quick Yelp search to make sure they served alcohol, and was also pleasantly surprised at all the good reviews! And this place lives up to it, trust me. The atmosphere was warm, with simple Japanese decor & an impressive space upstairs for private parties. It was our server's first night working and he was friendly and attentive. We started off with Wasabi Shumai and spicy garlic edamame. We were blown away by both dishes and the addition of garlic and spice really elevated the edamame. For our meals, we had the Rock and Roll (basically shrimp tempura), a Philly roll, and the Negimayaki. The sushi was fresh and delicious, and the Negimayaki was tender and very filling. Overall, it was a 5 star experience and I cannot wait to visit again!

Neatly packed.

Always Fresh and fast service. Every-time i order it literally only takes them 5 minutes!

I love Shiroi Hana. This two-floor Japanese restaurant is usually crowded to some degree, yet they manage to maintain fast service. They're not cheap, but they're worth a visit. Their kitchen turns out some fabulous creations: I've had their Beef Teriyaki ($19; #24), broiled choice rib eye seasoned and served with teriyaki sauce. Mmmm. A special I've tried of theirs is the "exciting" Japanese tray (their words, not mine - it's a bento box) served with shrimp shumai, miso soup, a ginger salad, rice, and a scoop of ice cream for dessert. I've also experienced their Ume ($25), an assortment of four fresh pieces of sushi (tuna, white fish, salmon, and shrimp), a California roll, aromatic chicken teriyaki, and shrimp tempura. Tempura was blah, but everything else is tasty.

Looks better than it tastes... No that's not a typo

You can't spell "hype" without Shiroi Hana! -------------- Before I begin, I have to apologize to Stephanie Y (3/31/10) - she was spot on with her review of this place! Either I'm a sushi snob, or too many people have unrefined palates. Or both. After reading so many good reviews about this place, we decided to come here for dinner. We split an order of the hard core sushi combo, tempura, and a spider roll. - Tempura: fried very well. Dipping sauce had a touch of ginger. - Spider roll: average. Too much lettuce, which in my opinion has no role in ...a role. - Hard core sushi combo: they ran out of surf clam, and so I asked to substitute for an additional piece of uni. The uni was VERY DISAPPOINTING, and had obviously been sitting out for too long. It was half melted before it arrived, and it had no creamy, "umami" sweetness (it tasted salty, which reflects BAD uni). The overall fish quality was mediocre, and MUCH better fish can be had at 3rd & Chestnut, 2nd & South, etc etc... Let's not even mention the poor wrapping job on the salmon roe sushi (see my pic) It got the second star only because of doting service. I bet the reason why this place gets massive grade inflation is that people review their the cooked items. I thought this was a sushi restaurant, not a Yakitori restaurant?!

Sushi love.

The place itself is beautiful, quiet without feeling dead, has great music, and such a good vibe overall. Between the food, drinks, atmosphere, and service, this was an amazing experience and I'd absolutely go back.

PRO: I will say, if you want a place where you can sit and have a conversation, dark mood lighting (especially forgiving if the last time you saw each other alot was 20 years ago! - LOL), Sagami is an excellent choice. PRO: They don't rush you out - take your time. It was a Thursday night, so not especially busy when we came at 6:30 PM. CON: I could not find an updated menu online - I'm one of those people who like to peruse a menu in advance. I started with a vegetable tempura appetizer ($10) - excellent, light, airy, tasty. My main was the dragon roll - very tasty. Service was quite nice. Appetizers came out almost immediately, the rolls took a lot longer to get to our table. This is the kind of place where you're not paying to fill up your belly - but if you do, expect to shell out some bucks.

We were seated at the sushi bar, which ended up being one of the best parts of the night. We got to watch the sushi chefs prepare dishes up close and even chat with them a bit, which made the experience feel more personal and fun. I would recommend requesting this if you are a party of one or two. The restaurant itself has a very clean, sleek look, with mostly white decor. It feels modern and upscale without being cold. The space is large enough that it doesn't feel crowded, but still intimate enough for a nice dinner. Our server was fantastic and gave great recommendations for cocktails, sake, and dishes. I tried a sake flight and ended up not enjoying it, and he kindly brought me something else with no issue and didn't charge for the flight, which I really appreciated. The sushi was fresh, and every dish we had was seasoned perfectly. They have seasonal tasting menus if you are more adventurous. The dishes are beautifully plated. Overall, this was a great experience and I'd definitely recommend Morimoto for a higher-end dinner in Philly, especially if you're a fan of TV chefs or just want a memorable sushi experience.

Royal's announcement on they starting to take reservations, a few months ago, immediately had me in stalker mode. I set a calendar reminder, waited for the day, hopped on & bang- success!! Another Philly weekend awaited, Yea! We arrived at Royal (apologies on review delay, circa April 11), for our 8:30pm high top table reservation. We were greeted and seated immediately- right side corner table ready. It's very dim in Royal, small but mobile and a bit noisy. Nothing unexpected. Skating over service, but they are so noteworthy. Our server was attentive, kind and helpful. They HUSSLE here to bus and clear tables. Timing for patrons arriving and being sat was like it was scripted, it was so flawless. No one waiting at the entrance corridor on arrival. Machine precision. Now, our meal- I'm drooling in my daydreams over it. We tried many plates & loved the portion size to be able to do so. The chicken wings- crisp, thick golden fried and tender. The toro with caviar- silk. A touch of brine, a melt in your mouth pleasure. The grilled octopus had an unassuming spice, mellow char and just the right consistency of chew. My husband ordered a surprise- I was scared. Fish heads. WTF, ok here we go. The plate came- heads on heads, quite the portion. This fish- first bite down, intimidation gone. This is one of the best things we've ever eaten. Succulent, moist fall apart whitefish. Didn't even taste like it was battered, no thickness to the breading. It tasted fried but so clean it didn't make sense how good it was. I don't have words. And now we get to the sushi- and I go completely mute.... There is no description worthy here. We had the Dragon Roll and the Spicy Crab Tempura roll. Can we call them the "Die and gone to heaven rolls". Fall apart fresh. Quality. Restrained, but pronounced. Pure. Insane. How can you describe food you will always remember. Except in having passion and a simple happy heart. This is what Royal gave us- in a sushi roll and a fish head. Thanks Jesse and team- simply the best!

One thing though, the restaurant was surprisingly hard to find because there really isn't much signage on the entrance/door. But there's a paper lantern outside, so if you see that, you're in the right place. I had really high expectations coming here and thankfully I wasn't disappointed, although nothing completely blew me away except for the Aka Taka roll. The chirashi bowl was solid overall and had good quality cuts of fish for $52. Everything tasted fresh and balanced, but next time I think I'd personally just order the sakedon instead. The chasu bao also wasn't really worth the $14 in my opinion. It was still good, just not something memorable or mind blowing. Same with the wagyu steak, for $38, it honestly just tasted like a really good steak, and the portion was a little smaller than I expected. My favorite appetizer was definitely the miso eggplant. Such a unique combination of flavors and the eggplant was cooked incredibly soft and well. It almost tasted like a sweet potato with the miso on top, and I would absolutely order it again. But the standout of the night was easily the Aka Taka roll. For a $27 roll, I had very high expectations and somehow they were all met. The roll was stuffed with different cuts of tuna that were unbelievably soft and buttery, and there was this crunch in the middle, maybe daikon? Whatever it was, it added the perfect texture. Honestly, it's something I'd go back just for.
