Hot & Sour soup served in little ramekins. Thick and spicy!
    Meredith R.

Hands down, this is the best Chinese restaurant in the area. All their dishes are consistently delicious ... but I award only four stars since there are things -- policies, not food -- that make little sense to me. DJ's hot and sour soup is excellent. However, individual portions are very small, and at $4.50, expensive. I noticed that on line one can get a large, which feeds at least three, for around $9. So that's what I asked for. Nope. If you eat in, you can only get the tiny $4.50 size. With staff working the dining room, you still have to order your meal on a tablet. I asked why. Three reasons: If the server gets the order wrong, he/she has to pay. (Does that really happen?!) Patrons can see photos of what they're ordering. AND -- according to the nice fellow working there -- it's easier for them when they switch up the menu. So, we went with the program. No soup. (Next time we'll get take-out!) An order of double cooked chicken. Delicious, as usual. And Mongolian beef. DJ is byob. Parking is easy in the Target garage, up the stairs. And -- like every time we're there -- almost all patrons are Asian, eating wonderous dishes, unlike the Americanized fare we go for.

    Hair in food

HAIR IN MY FOOD I went to DJ Kitchen on City Avenue in Philadelphia on Sunday, March 1, 2026 and ordered a simple meal (chicken lomein and General Tso's chicken with white rice). I ordered take out. I went home, plated my food and began eating. Two to three bites in I discovered a long strand of hair in my food. It was dangling from a piece of chicken I was about to eat. I immediately took the hair, which was intertwined in rice, and laid it on a napkin to see what it was. I took a few pictures. I called DJ Kitchen several times (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday) to request a refund because I could not eat the food. My calls and voicemail messages were ignored. It is not convenient for me to go back and return the food (I put it all back in the containers). I will try to go back to the store and show them the hair they left in my food. I doubt they will refund my $30+. But that was my last visit.

Our first meal in Philadelphia! It definitely didn't disappoint. We really enjoyed the beef and noodles, but the string beans weren't the best. I also got a thai tea, which was really good except the boba was a little hard.

Super authentic Asian food! I was in a party of 4. We all ordered different apps and entrees, and everything was very good! You order from iPads which is nice! It was also easy for us to all order and pay separately since we were on a work trip! Service was efficient. They are byob which is always nice! We did. It bring drinks, so I'm not sure if there is a corking fee or not. I would definitely recommend DJ Kitchen!

This schezuan Chinese restaurant is a gem near Philadelphia College of osteopathic medicine (PCOM). Everything on this menu is fresh delicious and good. The service is excellent! We had one of the most tastiest wonton soups I ever had. The egg drop soup was also very good. The scallion pancakes are second to none. The crispy cheese wontons were ok. The dumplings in chili oil were tasty. The fried rice dish and lo mein dishes were also very tasty. My favorite dishes were the cold sesame noodles with a little spice very delicious, the potatoes peppers and eggplant dish excellent and the long peppers with chicken excellent! Like I said everything I ordered was excellent. I would definitely be back! One of my favorite Chinese restaurants!

Have eaten here a few times and I've become a real fan. Hidden along City Ave behind Chipotle, the dining room is surprisingly never crowded even though you should definitely eat in. The entrees are $12-35 depending on what you get, but the chef knows how to prepare high quality Chinese food. This is way above the typical Chinese American takeout place. We recommend the spicy beef noodle soup as something to try to start but come back and explore their menu.

When you come to your favorite Chinese spot and stumble upon a legend. I was waiting for my to go order and look who breezed in and out. Always a fan, he was so humble and didn't mind taking a photo with me.

The food is consistently strong, and the signature dan dan noodles are a must-order. We also tend to get the chicken potstickers, scallion pancake, kung pao chicken, and dry pot beef, along with white rice for the table. It's a menu that rewards repeat visits. We've had both takeout and dine-in here, and we definitely prefer dining in. The food is at its best when it comes straight out of the kitchen. The staff is always friendly, helpful, and kind without being overbearing. For seating, we prefer the cozy but small upstairs dining area, so making a reservation on OpenTable is usually a good idea. There are a few high-top tables downstairs near the kitchen and windows, which are also great, but if you prefer a quieter or cozier spot, we think the upstairs is best. They also offer a happy hour with good prices, and overall, the value for the food quality is excellent. We often bring out-of-town guests, and it's always a hit. Sichuan cuisine remains distinct from typical American Chinese, which helps Dan Dan stand out. We've also noticed their Ardmore location, which appears to be a strong alternative. Consistently good, well-run, unique, and worth visiting, especially for the dan dan noodles. Highly recommended and hope to be back soon!

Glad I didn't opt to dine in as seating looked extremely limited and cramped. Stuck with a simple dandan noodle (this is what they're known for) and while the portion size was large, that's pretty much all it had going on. Sauce was decent but not enough to mask the doughy, overcooked noodles and grease puddles all over The worst part is it definitely upset my tummy and I did not feel good at all the day after. Tasted and felt a lot more like cheap lomein at panda express than an upscale Chinese restaurant

A bit on the higher priced side for this dish but as I've had some great food from a different Han Dynasty location I didn't mind trying them out. Portion size was average on the chicken. The spice level says 8/10 but it was definitely on the weaker side. Maybe the peppers themselves were older / dried out and the flavor faded too much vs fresher peppers right before cooking. Maybe a bad choice of dish or an off day but as compared to a few other Sichuan dry pepper dishes from other restaurants around Philly it was a clear step below them. Might try a different choice if I order again.

Chengdu Famous Food has created the right balance of cuisine authenticity, hole-in-wall-ness, and hipster vibe... all undeliberately. An absolute gem. Service was friendly. The shop is in a nice area of the revitalized Powelton/Drexel/University City area across from a few new developments with reasonable street parking in the area. We ordered the crispy chicken bao buns, crispy shrimp, general tso soup dumplings, wagyu beef, Korean bbq beef, and hamachi ceviche. We were a group of 3 so one thing that was nice was that our waiter added 1 additional skewer/bao bun for the meals instead of ordering 2 plates of them. Out of all the food we ordered the most delicious were the meats; the wagyu and Korean bbq beef. They were so tender and lightly seasoned because the beef quality itself was good. The Wagyu beef was paired with an apricot dip that was really good. The chilli crisp chicken bao was also good but didn't have much sauce, so it was on the dry side. It was supposed to have chilli so we expected it to be spicy but it was not. We all really liked the crispy shrimp--it was truly crispy. The sauce and the radish paired really nicely with the shrimp as well. The one meal we did not enjoy were the soup dumplings. When we got them they were dripping of raw dough and had no soup in them. The waiter was kind enough to replace them but we still didn't really enjoy them. I did not try the hamachi ceviche because I'm pregnant but it was also a favorite from the group. For dessert we had the mini ice cream cones. The waiter again added an extra one for us. The flavors were chocolate banana and mango. They were good, small bites. One of them melted so quickly and fell on the table and the waiter was really kind and got us a replacement. I did use the bathroom and absolutely hated it. It was unbelievably dark in there and there were weird sounds playing in there. I went in there to make sure I didn't have food in my teeth but couldn't even see. Super inaccessible, hopefully that's something that can be changed. The service overall was clearly excellent! I would recommend this place, especially if you come for the meats. It was surprisingly filling too.
