Do not eat here if you've ever had average or better BBQ. I asked "how do the ribs taste" and was told they are really good because we cook it St. Louis style". Should've been a clue they didn't understand BBQ since flavor doesn't come from the style of cut. I then asked if they smoke their brisket in house and was told they smoke it out back. Negative...while they may smoke it for a minute to get a faint smoke ring, the texture and lack of smoke flavor tells me they boil it. It had the texture and taste of a roast that had been in a crockpot. They rely on covering their ribs and brisket with sauce to make up for all the blandness. Whereas the chicken was dry and once again...flavorless. It didn't help that the waitress Bridgit (yes spelled correctly) was sarcastic when we were able to get her attention, even though we were the only ones in the restaurant at 2:30 in the afternoon. $50 for two plates that needed salt and pepper to get ANY flavor..."no we don't need a to-go box!" read more

My Mom told me: Beware of BBQ places with Dixie or Pig in their name - She was right! Okay... the good stuff first: Our server was very attentive. And now, the rest of the story: Should have known there would be more excuses went the sign on the front door explained that in order to get their name on the highway sign for the closest exits from I-95, Commonwealth of Virginia made them offer a breakfast menu. But that their breakfast was "Very Limited." Well, I was there for lunch, and didn't worry too much about that notice. Food is what needed the attention here. What was listed on the menu as "Pulled Pork" was chopped pork shoulder. the flavor was okay but not any better than you can get at most run-of-the-mill BBQ places and not as good as what I do in a slow cooker at home. Four unlabeled sauces were provided at the table. A sweet, a hot, a North Carolina vinegar style and a white sauce that was loaded with dill. All were watered down and none did anything to improve the pork. The patters come with two sides. Mac and Cheese was pretty tasteless, pretty dry, and pretty white, except for a sparse sprinkle of cheddar on top. The "Muddy Spuds" sounded interesting... a baked potato cut up with the skin, mixed with homemade ranch dressing, onions, and cheddar cheese (and again, missing the cheddar part of the cheese!) It was okay but it was kinda like eating someone else's leftover, partly eaten baked potato. I asked for a sample of their chili and some sour cream, which improved the whole idea. I did get a slice of coconut cream pie that was overloaded with shredded coconut. Took that home to my wife who loved it. read more

My family has been coming here for years! Their ribs are one of my favorite items on the menu. The meat just falls of the bone - so good. It's cheaper to get a full rack ($27) and split it with someone than to get two half racks ($20 each) - word to the wise. The only item I've tried that I wasn't a huge fan of was their mac and cheese. It's creamy noodles topped with shredded cheese, so not what I was expecting. Overall, great food, great staff, and wonderful atmosphere. Will continue to be back again and again. read more

So, this will be a very honest review from someone who cooks, visits many restaurants, have years of experience in customer service and grew up in the South. First, let's do the positives. The meat was cooked well and was tender and the staff was friendly. So, myself and my girlfriend ordered the same meal. A Combination Platter Of Ribs, Brisket and a side of Mac n Cheese and Collard Greens. As I said, meat was cooked to the right temperature and had a lil smoke......but needed some more, and tasted like someone was scared to season it. Had to go in the pantry to add flavor to it and that's with the sauce. The side sauces were overbalanced on the sweet side. So meat gets a C. Mac n Cheese, overcooked, tasted like a box version with no real flavor. Give it an F. Greens - cooked to right doneness, no smoked meat for flavoring, and they were sweet, sugar sweet, in a bad way.......again lack of seasoning balance. Give it a D Price.....Over $40 with no drinks......$20 for one combination dinner. Overpriced for a small local restaurant.......Price for value gets an F. End result is we threw away the menu. Not paying top dollar for something we can make better at home. We were not happy at all. I would personally be glad to help with your recipes in exchange for my money back for these meals. read more

Ribs were tender but definitely not the best seasoned. Mac and Cheese not good, greens have tooo much vinegar. Corn bread not sweet at all. Baked beans are ok. Smoked Sausage ok. Staff was very nice but reviews are about the taste of food so I give them 2 stars. read more

If you like hair in your food this is the place to go. Not once but TWICE , there was hair in my food. Oh, you want a refund... well bring in the food. You think maybe something was off in the kitchen one day and half ended up in the food. You throw it away and keep it moving. A couple months later, you give them a chance to prove themselves only to have another long hair in the $15 mac and cheese. Absolutely disgusting. I plan on contacting the health department over this because it's absolutely disgusting and they don't care if they make things right after or not. Awful customer service. read more

I have always loved this place, the food is excellent in my opinion. It's hard to find food "genre's" if you will, like this now a days. The food was good but very disappointed in the amount of coleslaw I was giving for my takeout BBQ sandwich. I ordered it on the side so my bun won't get soggy. Met up with other Yelpers for a meeting of the Carnivore Crew to check out Dixie Bones. My first time visiting here. We were supposed to meet at 1:30 pm, I got there about 1:40 pm - and there was a line out the door. Jeff and company were already there waiting for our tables to open up. One table opened up - and Cadence, Jaclyn, Katie, and Alicia snagged it. Jeff, Michele, and I waited for the next table - we did not have long to wait. The first table they were going to give us was a bit apart from the girls - but another table immediately opened across from them - Jeff got the hostess to move us to the new table. A bit later, Tony P. arrived and sat with us, then Kevin arrived and squeezed into the booth with the girls. Of course we opted for the all-you-can-eat brunch. I can't say I've ever been to an all-you-can-eat place for BBQ. I dished up both shredded pork and beef, potato salad, collard greens, a fried potato mixture, and a piece of corn bread. On the second plate I got a bit more pork, a small piece of chicken, and some of the macaroni and cheese. Both the pork and beef were tasty - I tried 4 of the 5 BBQ sauces - all were decent - none of them really wowed me. The fried potato mixture was to greasy for me, the corn bread was average. I did not like the potato salad, the collard greens were by far the best side I had. I really enjoyed those - I could have eaten a whole barrel of them. The macaroni and cheese was tasty - although I like my mac and cheese to be a little cheesier. Tu-van and Travis arrived right at the end - we were pretty much done eating by then. Service was very good. Our server checked on us several times, removing plates and refilling beverages. I'd like to come back here some time and try some items off the menu - such as the ribs and the item that Katie F. raves about in her review - the "pork stuffed potato." Best part - as always - is hanging out with other Yelpers, getting to know them and having a fun time! read more

Dined here last night. Got the 1/2 chicken plate w/ baked beans & potato salad, along with a "roll" and a beer. Overall meal was okay. Dark meat on the chicken was moist and tasty and the skin was crisped up nicely. The white meat was a bit dry. Sides were also just okay...nothing great, but not bad. The "roll" was just a hamburger bun. If you're gonna go that route, just serve up some white bread, TX style. Also, no offer of pickle, onions or jalapeños. I know I'm a bit far from my AustIn roots in the DC area, but that's tantamount to sacrilege where I come from. On the super plus side, the place was cool, service was outstanding, beer was cold, the brown topped bottled sauce at the table was tasty and the price was reasonable. Can't compare to the other BBQ joints in the area, as I haven't tried, but they all appear to be chains, so this place wins. I'll be coming back to try the ribs and such over the next few weeks. read more

Dixie Bones is an Alabama-style bbq joint in Woodbridge, that has been around since '95. The hubs and I came to Dixie Bones for dinner, as our favorite ribs place hasn't opened up for the season. I've only had their Pork Potato in the past, which was pretty good. I couldn't believe that the founder of Dixie Bones himself, Mr. Nelson Head, was right there at the restaurant, chit-chatting it up with the customers and making sure everything was good (STARSTRUCK!!!)!!! The menu offers plate combos, Giant Stuffed Potatoes (Pork, Chicken, Beef, Sausage, or meatless), sandwiches, meat by the pound/pieces, sides (beans and rice, cabbage, cole slaw, baked beans, potato salad, etc.), kids options, desserts, as well as catering options. We had the 2 Meat Combo, with the Beef BBQ (brisket; this was okay) and the 3 pieces of spare ribs (they were tender, but not super flavorful), a Pork Potato (with a generous amount of pulled pork, butter, sour cream, cheese, and sweated onions; can be quite overwhelming at the generous amount of the meats/cheeses), a Loaded Potato (meatless; with butter, sour cream, cheese, and sweated onions), baked beans (I would have preferred a more thicker sauce), mac & cheese (just okay), muddy spuds (deconstructed homefries; more on the bland side), collards (quite delicious!), Dixie Chips (housemade thickly-sliced potato 'chips;' good with dipping in ketchup), cornbread (slightly dry), and a bun (which was just a hamburger bun; flavorless and dry). They also had 4 types of sauce jars at the table, which was quite nice for a sauce lover like myself - I preferred the sweeter one, that was slightly thicker, as well as the Alabama white bbq sauce (good with the brisket). We washed everything down with their sweet tea, which was not that sweet and came with free refills. I think I would still stick to their Giant Stuffed Potatoes, as that is a meal itself, as well as the collared greens. Our server, Ms. Ciza, was extremely sweet and very attentive - she made sure that everything was taken care of and checked up on us regularly. You can tell that the locals love this place, and the restaurant itself was jam-packed! +Giant Stuffed Potatoes (Pork Potato) +collared greens +Dixie Chips +sauce jars at the table (try the white BBQ sauce!) +Founder, Mr. Nelson, is on-site (!!!) :D +ask for Ms. Ciza! :D read more

Nice staff, but way overpriced for bad food. The meat was not bbq flavor. We had to definitely overuse sauce to add taste. Absurd price for sides that I could get at a dollar store. The collard greens had absolutely no flavor. The beans were salty and bland, at the same time. I guess you do have to be talented to do that. My friend had the mac n cheese. Out of a box. And it was served barely warm. Pulled pork was very slimy. It was really bad. read more

This is my go-to bbq spot for over 20 years. My family and I are never disappointed when eating here and it is our favorite bbq in the area. The meats and sides are very good and they have a variety of delicious sauces. I'm a big fan of their Pulled pork and the pepper vinegar based sauce. I really enjoy their different stuffed baked potatoes and the coleslaw too. It's clean inside and the staff are pretty much always friendly. You can't go wrong when eating here. read more

Came here for lunch on the way down to NC for vacation. We did not want fast food, and Yelp reviews seemed good so we came here. The BBQ was ok...nothing spectacular, nothing pukey. Most side sauces were rather watery, flavorless, and not that good. One was just below average which was needed for the dry pulled pork. Sauces need to be thick with some kick! Bucking Bronco not Carnival Pony. Even Kraft which is bad is better than Dixie Bones. The sauces at Famous Daves are also much better. Do you guys at Dixie Bones get it? No one likes your sauces! Read your reviews and get them changed! I had a combo ribs and chicken. Ribs were pretty decent, chicken average. Kids had a grilled cheese which was left half eaten. My side cole slaw was nice, and my family thought the mac and cheese was really great not unlike some of the other Yelper reviews. Service was nice and friendly, we were seated rather quickly, and they gave us two sweet teas to go gratis. They were really good. $60 total for the 4 of us including tip. read more

It's Ok. We stopped off to have dinner before we went home ... the ppl weren't very welcoming but besides that. The food was ok. We order ribs . They were good.. Cornbread was good too it was moms favorite thing at the table .. served with butter and honey.. The Mac and cheese was shockingly the best side at the table. That and the baked Beans. And I really wanted brisket. BUT The brisket was disgustingly dry. Even with the BBQ sauce ... We told the server when he came to check on the table that the brisket was nasty . They did nothing. (But wait it gets better) After the servers stood behind us arguing., in a dining room full of people ... When we asked for boxes to wrap up the leftovers and the check.. The server was pushy n insisted that we took the DRY and tasteless brisket home. We did take it.. and immediately threw it in the trash as soon as we got home... Would I go back?? No thanks Should you?? For the Ribs read more

I feel like I must have shown up here on a really off night. We didn't have a memorable experience. We liked the catfish, but the brisket, sausage, pulled pork and ribs were just ok. Plus, our loaded potatoes came bare - they were just plain baked. The sauces were ok, but they didn't seem to really enhance any of our food at all. The corn bread was dry and bland on top of that. We had a lot of high hopes, especially since Dixie Bones made the top 10 list in places to try BBQ in Virginia. I really wanted to have the great food that so many people have raved about. read more

This was a 5 star pre COVID. They have had a lot of challenges. Still the best in the area.

I'm always on the look out for a good BBQ place. I saw this highly rated place on Yelp and saw that it was convenient enough to Mt. Vernon to check it out for lunch. This restaurant is touted for it's long tradition, their Alabama-style BBQ, their use of hickory chips, etc. In my opinion, the food was unbelievable. Unbelievable in how disappointing it was. I had the pulled pork BBQ plate with sides of baked beans, mac & cheese, and cornbread. The pork is served sans sauce, and without any sauce it failed to have a discernible flavor. Where was this natural hickory taste that I have read about? There were 4 sauces on the table in addition to a bottle of Texas Pete. Nothing was labeled, so I did trial and error to figure out which sauces if any might work well with the dish. I did find a sauce that helped things a bit, adding vinegar and heat to the dish. But it just didn't come together for me. This was some of the least interesting pulled pork I have had, and I've had it before in Mobile, AL so it's not something I can chock up to regional differences. The sides were disappointing too. The mac and cheese had a white cheese sauce and then was topped with shredded cheddar?/american? cheese. I want to say it was cheddar, but there was no sharpness at all. Just noodles clogged with fat which I failed to finish. The cornbread was dry and not rich in any flavor at all; I only had a couple of bites of this. The beans were okay. And I rather enjoyed my sweet tea -- the best thing I had. The service was very good. All of my needs were quickly attended to, and I enjoyed the table-side checkout where they print your receipt in front of you (like when you return a rental car). The decor was nice too for a BBQ joint. Flags, patches, and shrines to military service adorned the walls which made sense being so close to Quantico and Ft. Belvoir. It looked exactly like a great neighborhood spot where you could enjoy good food. Everything was really good about this place except for the food -- and that's the one place you're not allowed to miss. Through the window I could see another restaurant across the parking lot: Pupuseria Dona Azucena. While I was trying to finish my meal, I wished that I had chosen differently. read more

I was a huge fan of Dixie Bones until a recent visit. Went for lunch on a Saturday at 1pm and they had not started cooking any chicken. What??? I was not a happy guest. Instead of leaving, I decided to order the catfish dinner which is large enough to share with my husband (a six piece). Not anymore. You only get three pieces on the dinner and would have to pay $9 to get the three extra pieces you normally get and did I mention the prices increased?? More money for less food. Dixie Bones is nothing short of a heavenly BBQ vacation in your mouth. You know a local restaurant is good when you go to a friends BBQ thirty five+ miles away, and the following conversation occurs: Me (with a full mouth): This... tastes... familiaOMG WHERE DID U GET THIS?! Awesome Friend: I drove out to this place in Woodbridge. Me: You mean.... Group Unison High-Five: Dixie Bones, Yay!!! Okay, so maybe it didn't happen *exactly* like that, but close enough for distant friends to also be enamoured enough with this food place to drive 35+ miles out of their way to pick up some DB. The art this eatery is in the sauce, which is available in the following flavors: Yellow Top, Black or Brown Top, Almond Top, Red Top... Maybe these aren't the exact names, but it's how they are separated for you on the table, and fortunately for us literate folks, each table has an explanation of what these are, and what type of meat they go best with. The sauces with the Black/Brown and Yellow Tops are my favorite... I have no idea what's in 'em, I just know it gets in my belly and makes me sleepy and happy. My (current) culinary obsession with DB is the loaded baked potato with shredded pork, everything in the world on top, and a ton of BBQ sauce to dip (or soak) your meat, potatoes, and cheese in. The sides are nothing to scoff at either, I pretty much always hate greens and cole slaw, but will order both of these when I go to DB as an alternative for something slightly less heavy than the (unforgetably thick and delicious) mac&cheese. Sweet Tea! Again, another thing I was never a fan of until DB came along, but I can't come here without getting some ST. Soooooo so good, yum. Everything on the menu is worth trying, which is why I also recomend the * drum roll please * ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT-BBQ... Good Lordy Wonderful World of Warcraft, why didn't I think of this sooner? The AYCE-BBQ is only available Sundays (why?!?!?!), so if you're in the mood to feast on some pigs (while you laugh at the comical figurines of piglets at your table), and you feel like loosening your belt on a Sunday afternoon with some good home cookin' - GET YOUR A$$ OVER HERE! read more

So glad to be able to dine in the restaurant again. Great evening for a motorcycle ride on the back roads to visit. My partner and I share the beef plate with fries and a side of muddy spuds. Tried the new chili tonight. I'm a fan. I've eaten a lot of chili over the years and this one is solid - not spicy at all but very tasty. Would like to see Apple Pay support via a service I've seen at one other restaurant that allows me to scan a code on the receipt and use Apple Pay from the table. This is an Alabama style BBQ place in Woodbridge, about 45 minutes south of DC and is some of the best BBQ I've had in the DC area. I was hungry and got the pork platter with two sides. The large serving of pork shoulder is very lean and tender, it had that perfect smoky flavor and goes well with their sauces. They have a regular tomato based sauce (a little sweet for me), a spicier tomato sauce (my favorite), a vinegar sauce (went well work pork as well), and an Alabama white sauce which I didn't try. I normally prefer mustard based sauce but that's more Carolina style so I respect their authenticity here. The BBQ beans were top notch and had a good flavor but could've used a little more pork or some more onions/peppers. The rice and beans were good as well but I added a little Tabasco sauce to perk them up a little. The meal comes with a huge slice of cornbread and it was tasty without being too sweet. I was too full to finish t though. Their iced tea is also real tea and worth a try. Too bad they don't have fried okra like some places, maybe they'll add it in the future? The service here is very fast and very friendly. Some of the prices are a little high but worth the price. I don't say this often about DC area BBQ, but this place would fit right in down south and I'll be back here. Oh and be sure to check out the "VDOT Breakfast" sign on the door. It's a joke so don't plan a breakfast stop here and also an example of bureaucracy at its worst. read more

Love the quick service and homemade style food. I used to go there often. I love the pork potato and ribs. Sides and desserts are good too. Only gave 3 stars due to the now outrageous prices. What a great staff and greater waiter. The guy refilled our iced teas with new ones when we were still drinking our first ones and put them in to-go cups when we were about to leave, even refilling those! BBQ was delicious, with big such big portions that we had to get to-go boxes. I got the BBQ pulled pork plate with baked beans, mac 'n cheese, and cornbread. The tomato sauce that you can put on top tasted better than the vinegar sauce, in my professional opinion. The cornbread was a little dry and could have been a tad bit sweeter. For dessert, we shared a slice of apple pie a la mode. Who doesn't love homemade ice cream and pie?! They are very generous with the ice cream and the outside crust for the pie was so crispy. We left with full and satisfied stomachs! read more

I'd give this place a 2.8 but there's no decimals. I had the brisket, greens and mac and cheese. This brisket came out almost like a stew which is not what I'm used to. The best of part of going here on Sunday is the all you can eat buffet. The worst part of going here on Sunday is the all you can eat buffet. That being said the bbq is great, now coming from up North and being the dam Yankee that I am, my bbq taste buds are still in their infancy, but I know a good meal when I taste it, this is good. The buffet covers just about every kind of pulled bbq you can ever ask for, beef, pork and chicken, add to that sausage, sides and corn bread, a few tall glasses of sweet tea and I was stuffed and filled with glee. Worth the 40 minute drive from DC (warning, Dixie Bones is in the SOUTH). You know that I'm always on the prowl for Carolina BBQ. I also prefer a BBQ plate in lieu of an a la carte BBQ system, such as with Dickeys BBQ. So naturally I was curious to try out Dixie Bones to see how their sauce game stood out. I called in my order for a pork shoulder plate with 2 sides (coleslaw & potato salad, natch) and the total came to $13.50, which I think is on the steep side. It also included a "roll", which turned out to be a dry hamburger bun. When I picked up, they have a separate Carry Out counter, which was appreciated as it does tend to get very busy in the dining room. They also offered some sample brownies that they had out to my kids, which I thought was a nice touch. After finishing my plate at home, here at my thoughts: killer potato salad (homestyle & creamy), great coleslaw (chunky and zesty), and okay BBQ. The actual pork was pretty dry. They gave me a bunch of their vinegar-style sauce to go, which I found to be way too watery and lacking flavor. Carolina BBQ sauce needs to have a strong vinegar punch while also being thick enough to seep into the meats, whether they are dry or not. So bottom line, I don't really care how great the sides were, the actual BBQ was subpar and the sauce game wasn't great. Ultimately for $13.50, I can go to Dickey's BBQ down the street, get a 1/2 lb of AMAZING and moist bbq pork shoulder and order sides a la carte for $14. So I think I'm just gonna do that. read more

Been to all the big chain barbecue restaurants in northern VA and nothing quite hits the spot as well as Dixie Bones. The restaurant is very unassuming from the outside. Inside, various knick knacks line the walls to give the place a very eclectic feel. Seating seems fairly limited, but there has been no wait for the two times I have eaten here. The one-page menu is straight forward. Items aren't cooked to order, obviously, so the time it takes for the food to arrive is just a few minutes. I usually get the ribs and pulled pork as the meats. I have tried the 1/2 chicken once before, but it was dry and tough. The ribs are fall-off-the-bone tender. Delicious! The pulled pork is fantastic as well. All the meats come "dry" and you have your choice of dressing them with four types bbq sauces at the table. For the sides, the fries and "dixie chips" are typical deep-fried potatoes, nothing worth noting. Mac-and-cheese is decent. The baked beans are very sweet; I don't normally order beans, but these would probably be my go-to side item at this spot. The cornbread is not very sweet, which is the traditional style of cornbread, so bear that in mind when ordering. Service is terrific here! We have had Shannon as our server twice and he is very friendly and accommodating. Very talkative guy that likes to chat up all his tables. He also was generous enough to bring us pork bones to take home for the dog. Prices can be moderately high here, but portion sizes are just right to fill me up. If you pay with cash, you also receive a ~5% discount on your total. read more

Dixie Bones BBQ - Ribs, pulled-pork, dixie potato chips, baked beans - Barbeque Near Me - Woodbridge, Virginia

In my opinion Dixie Bones lacks flavor and is not worth the money. I have tried them several times and there just isn't anything exceptional about them. Last week I purchased food for my family and it was very disappointing! The vegetables are very lackluster. Green beans were absolutely horrible. They were extremely watery and limp and lacked flavor. After trying one bite I threw them I trashed them and decided they were not suitable to feed anyone in my family. The collared greens were a 5 out of 10. The cornbread was terrific. The baked potatoes were large, pricey and nothing special. The ribs were just OK. Very over priced for the quality. I picked up carry out - 1 pulled chicken potato, one potato with just butter and cheese, a side of vegetables, one piece of cornbread, and one rib dinner. Sadly I paid right around $70. I have tried Dixie bones several times over the years but I am done! It's just not worth the money or the drive (even though they're only 5 miles from our home). Please understand it is not my intention to be mean instead this is a very honest review of a restaurant I do not recommend. read more
