Not much seasoning. But worth getting off the road for 45 mins. The establishment is cute. Not to small. But not big either. Like a family establishment. The people are very friendly and staff were attentive. They work as a team and that's important in a place like this. . The best of part of going here on Sunday is the all you can eat buffet. The worst part of going here on Sunday is the all you can eat buffet. That being said the bbq is great, now coming from up North and being the dam Yankee that I am, my bbq taste buds are still in their infancy, but I know a good meal when I taste it, this is good. The buffet covers just about every kind of pulled bbq you can ever ask for, beef, pork and chicken, add to that sausage, sides and corn bread, a few tall glasses of sweet tea and I was stuffed and filled with glee. Worth the 40 minute drive from DC (warning, Dixie Bones is in the SOUTH). I regret not getting the ribs, but after too many trips to the buffet, I called it quits and vowed to go back, and soon will! read more

I looked up this place because I had their radio commercials some time ago. I didn't have the chance to come down this way until today. Going in there was a unique experience in and of itself. It reminds me of an old time restaurant situated in a small country town. The only thing missing are the peanuts! The guy at the register who took my order was nice enough, and he asked me if I preferred the Cole slaw on the sandwich, or as part of a side. There was also some question about the type of barbecue sauce. He listed out more than five, and I wasn't sure, so I just stuck with traditional barbecue sauce. It took it home, and took the first bite which was awesome! The sandwich was a little dry without the sauce and Cole slaw, and once I added that, it tasted perfect. Stopped in with some buddies. We were looking and hoping for good barbecue. Our server as well as service was great. The food on the other hand, 2/10. All the sides were canned. I am in full belief that the baked beans were Bushes traditional. And their green beans came straight from the green giant onto our table. My favorite bbq in nova. I have been coming here since before I could drive and its withstood the test of time. I usually get the pork platter or sandwich and some fries. They have the best bbq sauce in the area and the fries are great for soaking it up. I would probably gain 5 pounds just from looking at the calorie count I take in when I go to this place... and you definitely aren't getting anything done the rest of the day after you eat here. My mom kept telling me that i needed to try this place because it was so good for traditional BBQ. But I never got the opportunity to try it because it's not really convenient to my house. However my mother, my daughter and myself were down in Woodbridge buying me a car. And where we got the car it was very close to Dixie Bones. So we decided to stop in for dinner. The decor is real cool and laid back. They had some amazing looking desserts in their refrigerator by the entrance way, so that was very good incentive to save some room for later. We got our table and I ordered a pulled chicken sandwich with coleslaw on top, my mom ordered a pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw and a side of collard greens(because she says their greens are to die for) but I hate greens. And my daughter got one of their massive baked potatoes with just sour cream and butter. Our food arrived very quickly and I was very happy with my order. The pulled chicken was flavorful, juicy and not dry at all without adding any of the 4 sauce choices. My daughter loved her potato and it was super yummy when I snuck a bite. I would highly recommend it. And I will definitely save room for dessert next time!! read more

Been to all the big chain barbecue restaurants in northern VA and nothing quite hits the spot as well as Dixie Bones. The restaurant is very unassuming from the outside. Inside, various knick knacks line the walls to give the place a very eclectic feel. Seating seems fairly limited, but there has been no wait for the two times I have eaten here. The one-page menu is straight forward. Items aren't cooked to order, obviously, so the time it takes for the food to arrive is just a few minutes. I usually get the ribs and pulled pork as the meats. I have tried the 1/2 chicken once before, but it was dry and tough. The ribs are fall-off-the-bone tender. Delicious! The pulled pork is fantastic as well. All the meats come "dry" and you have your choice of dressing them with four types bbq sauces at the table. For the sides, the fries and "dixie chips" are typical deep-fried potatoes, nothing worth noting. Mac-and-cheese is decent. The baked beans are very sweet; I don't normally order beans, but these would probably be my go-to side item at this spot. The cornbread is not very sweet, which is the traditional style of cornbread, so bear that in mind when ordering. Service is terrific here! We have had Shannon as our server twice and he is very friendly and accommodating. Very talkative guy that likes to chat up all his tables. He also was generous enough to bring us pork bones to take home for the dog. Prices can be moderately high here, but portion sizes are just right to fill me up. Dixie Bones is our favorite BBQ. We no longer live in Woodbridge, but we recently went back and ate a Sunday meal and I thought I would write a review. We've eaten at BBQ joints all over the country, and I feel like I should find a better BBQ place than just south of DC, but we haven't. It it the standard by which we measure all others, and none have matched it. My wife is very finicky when it comes to meat, and she will not eat brisket from any other place. It is always lean and cooked just the way we like it. For us, fat in our meat is a show-stopper and their meat is always lean. Maybe some people like a lot of fat, but we don't. The pulled pork is always perfect and I think the ribs are outstanding. We have NEVER had a bad meal at Dixie Bones...ever! There is a Mission BBQ near where we live that is ok, but we think Dixie Bones is much better. We think all of the sides are fantastic and, well, the food is simply great. If you're looking for fancy, or franchise food like Famous Dave's or Red, Hot, and Blue, this place isn't it. This is simply the kind of place you go to for good BBQ. My ONLY complaint is that they used to serve one of the best Cherry Pies I ever ate and they stopped serving it years ago. I wish it was back on the menu (hint hint). read more

I really like Dixie Bones. Can't say I love it, unfortunately the prices are on the spendier side for the restaurants in the area I work. The best value I have found are the stuffed potatoes. The potatoes are HUGE!!! I like the brisket and pork, have not yet tried the chicken or catfish. The muddy spuds are.....in a word....meh....nothing great. Don't really care for the sausage. The coleslaw is good, the mac & cheese is decent. The fries are also good. I hate to say I prefer a chain, but I have had better brisket and pork at Famous Daves in Dale City, the brisket and pork I had at Dixie Bones were both dry....and at Famous Daves the prices are lower for the same quantity. The best part of this experience was my waiter. He deserves 5 stars alone for his service but I have to include the food in this rating because that's the reason I went. I got a catfish sandwich thinking I couldn't go wrong with that. Unfortunately I was wrong. The 3 little catfish fingers were all batter and no fish. In addition to that the bread was not fresh. BBQ places are very hit or miss. This place was a hit for me. I ordered the brisket plate and my buddy and his family had ribs and pulled pork. The meat was moist, not dried out and over done. The table sauces were a nice complement to the food. The sides were hot and well seasoned without being overly cooked down, as you often get in places that make big batches and let them sit all day. The cornbread was very dry, so that wasn't worth the upgrade, but otherwise I really enjoyed my meal and my friends did too. The walls are decorated with patches from military and law enforcement. We had a nice time playing games to find patches from specific areas. The staff was super friendly. The prices were reasonable. This is definitely a good place to check out. read more

This is try, and why I demoted my rating to 3 stars. It definitely needs some sauce to juice it up a notch. However, this could be because the high-sodium American diet has skewed our taste buds. Here is a list of their sauces if you want to know what you are getting into: (Labeled by their dispenser top color and description taken off their napkin dispenser) Black or Brown top - traditional tomato bbq sauce - not hot - just a tad spicy! Yellow Top - Mild tomato bbq sauce, made to enhance the great, smoky flavor of ribs (I thought this was too watery.) Red Top - Vinegar BBQ sauce - for pork Almond Top - An Alabama specialty made for chicken, also good on pork. (I liked this one, it was creamy.) The sides, I personally think can be shared, so you can each get some thing different. The baked beans were sweet, and a little vinegary, makes my mouth water when I think about it. I wanted to be healthy, so I ordered the collard greens. They are a sore for sight eyes, the dark green color doesn't help your appetite, but they taste sweet and just right. Yes to the corn bread, you can get a roll anywhere. The corn bread was fluffy and light. Note: I got here at 8:30 pm, they close at 9 pm, and there was a still a 10 min. wait. Hickory wood smoked ribs and meat. They offer a simple menu of plates and family dinning. Meals come with two sides and cornbread sliced like a piece of pie. I had the two meat combo of ribs and sausage with cabbage and muddy 'tatoes. Everything was great. The meat on the ribs literally jumped off the bone and into my mouth. How do they do that? It's slow cooked and not smothered in sauce or fat. The sides were great also. Cabbage is the best I've had. The table has four house sauces and Texas Pete as condiments. The place is very clean and presentable service fast courteous and knowledgable. I didn't have any wait for my order even though 90% of the tables were occupied. I'm glad I found this place in Woodbridge and I will come again. The price of $20 for lunch plus a drink (which came with a refill) is steep for being a regular but I look at it like this; you should pay a premium for real good bar B Q as bad bbq is just a waste of money. read more

This is a rare five star review, so be warned, I may gush, just a little. I love good barbecue.. not the kind with heavy, sugary sauces.. more like the sharp vinegary kind. I know, I know, what kind of brunch would you expect in a divey little barbecue place, in a dumpy little shopping center that has seen better days? Well sir (or ma'am), you're going to be surprised. Dixie Bones has an all you can eat buffet menu for brunch that is frankly, amazing. You can pretty much get every kind of barbecue they make-- sausage, brisket, pulled pork, chicken, plus a ton of sides, usually with a side of sweet tea. It's not exactly cheap, but not astronomical either, considering the quality and quantity of choices. The problem is any normal non-glutton, non-professional eater human being is going to have a problem once you've emptied your plate. Too many choices.. too much food. I can't do this very often-- but on that rare day when we do, we always walk away groaning. Add to this the family nature of the staff-- many of whom have worked their for many years and are extremely attentive and friendly, and I always enjoy visiting this place. It's no glamor spot-- located right across from the VRE station in a strip mall.. but they make up for the atmosphere with basic kindness, great food and lots of it. I enjoy Dixie Bones and will continue to be an occasional buffet customer-- I may have to go on a ten mile hike directly afterward to walk it all off, but it would be worth it! read more

Don't know what I can add to the glowing remarks other than, if you are from Alabama and miss the fairly unique style of Bar-B-Que from there, this is the place for you. Every time I go there (usually every other month) I get a big helping of outside meat pork either as a main dish with corn bread or stuffed in to a potato the size of Idaho. This is the only place in 100 mile radius of northern Virginia that I've found that understands what you mean by outside meat. That's the stuff most shops only use a bit of in their Bar-B-Que but to a southern boy, it's manna from heaven. Their sweet tea is also truly southern style unlike the wannabe's at McDonald's and the other chains. Lastly, finish up with one of their pies for dessert and you can't go wrong. I really like the Sweet Potato Pie but it's only available Saturday's. One thing about their white sauce, Nelson is quick to point out that this is not Big Bob Gibson's. Meaning the sauce is a bit different that what you will find in the Huntsville/Decatur areas of north Alabama. If I had known that BBQ this good could be had so close to Washington DC I would have been here long before beginning a 1000-mile drive down I-95. The sausage was the star. It took to the smoke extremely well and we wished we'd ordered a lot more of it. The pulled pork was also very good, and definitely worth getting. The pulled chicken was kind of tasteless and useful only as a vessel for their (very tasty) sauces. The collard greens and dirty mashed potatoes were also great (as was the unsweetened tea). Not only was the food great-- worth driving to Woodbridge for-- but the service was great too. We had tied our dog up outside and they kindly gave us a window seat so that we could keep an eye on her, gave our dog a big cup of water to drink, and were very cheerful in general. Our food came out very fast! The BBQ pork is very tender but dry. This is good if you want to try the 4 different sauces, because the meat will soak up the sauce like a sponge. This place has gone way down hill. We have been coming here for the most amazing bbq and muddy spuds and brisket. Collards etc. for over 20 years. Today was very disappointing. The place was empty for lunch which should have been our first clue. The pulled pork was soggy/mushy and had no flavor. I sent it back and got the brisket. The brisket was better but nothing to come back for. No real yum smoke Flavor or any flavor for that matter. Brisket very moist. The green beans were flavorless. How do u screw up green beans. Cold slaw no flavor. Collards were great and muddy spuds good too but that's it. Service is friendly and attentive but no more for us. There are tons great bbq places close and much better. I found this place on yelp.... so I decided to try it out.... let me start out by saying that the staff is very friendly. Our waiter was super friendly.... which is why I gave this a 2 star rating. as far as the food. Not so much. The food does not taste fresh. The stuffed potato was descent... the Sausage is bad. Was not even cooked all the way... pink in the middle. The pulled pork was dry.... the beef brisket looked more like shredded beef. Was not good at all.
