Parking was a little confusing since you had to make your own spot as it got super crowded at one point but thankfully it wasn't an issue since we left plenty of time. If you're coming here to run a race or ride bikes, plan for it to be windy and full of dust. I'm glad we had face coverings! My only complaint for Spartan is they didn't have more places for shade because it got pretty toasty at 80 degrees. Otherwise, it was a great location and a great set up for a race! We're hooked and already planning our next race for the trifecta this year

I didn't do said race, opting instead to use my voucher for the 21k in Big Bear. However, I figured I should experience it myself someday... well that day turned into a two-year time-skip. A dusty landscape with lots of mini spiky plant balls and weather teetering between 90 and 100 deg F, it's not the most scenic of places, but as an obstacle course there's some beauty to its emptiness. The dryness of the surrounding mountains made up the first portion of the race for both the 5k and 10k races (no 21k). Dust kicked up relatively easily from the runners, but overall, the course was clean. The route then weaved through the racetracks, passing pipe tunnels, and into certain rocky areas of a dried-up riverbed before coming back to the racetracks. When I volunteered to do the pre-run on Sunday, I got a good sense of how tranquil riding a motorbike around here might feel during the early mornings or early evenings. During Spartan days, cars drive early morning into Magee Rd instead of the main entrance to funnel between staff, volunteers, and the general crowd. The drive is kinda bumpy, and without signs it was difficult to find your way out. With that said, it was a fun weekend not too far from LA.

I did see some people with one avocado but they were all gone by the time half marathoners arrived. I think they should have passed them out with the medal. The course was all right. I realize this was the first Half Marathon and 5K for Fallbrook's Avocado Festival; and, as such, inaugural events are usually then prone to glitches, misfirings, snags, and snafu's. I get that. I do. Neverthesless, out of all the runs I've registered for over the past three months, I was most looking forward to Fallbrook's. I mean, c'mon, avocados will make everything better, won't they? After all, Fallbrook is the unofficial "Avocado Capital of the World!" So running amidst groves upon groves of avocado trees; being included in their Annual Avocado Festival; and, upon finishing, expecting a blissfully fruitful avocado saturation (the run promoted "plenty" of avocados for everyone) was what I had in mind. However, we didn't run among farms of avocado trees (we 5Kers ran down one road and back up again,) we didn't arrive during the famed festival (it was the following day,) and there weren't "plenty" of avocados awaiting us (there were about four, small buckets full.) I noted, in fact, that the Half Marathoners didn't even receive avocados. I do feel bad, but there didn't seem to me to be any 5K runners with armfuls of them. We just picked up one or two. No one policed those efforts, and I'm sure that no one understood that so few avocados were being made available. The word "plenty," it's relative, I guess. I mean, there could just as easily have been four buckets of bananas, and we could have run the "Banana Half Marathon & 5K" instead, right? The "Avocado Capital" ran out, did they? Uh-huh. Having run the 5K, and because we were redirected to park at a church three miles away from the event--then to be shuttled in--I wish I had opted to purchase a parking pass for the Live Oak Park lot nestled directly next to packet pick-up and registration. I assume there was an email inviting runners to do just that, but I parked at the church anyway. The problem was that after running the 5K, we weren't shuttled back to our cars until over two hours later! No one--not any of the volunteers--seemed to have answers to this. But we--with many frustrated others--waited...and waited...and waited... (By the way, our bus--when it finally did arrive--broke down en route to the 5K church parking. Add another 20 minutes.) And the medals... Wrong date, on those that had a date; others were dateless. And the ribbons: some were simply green (like mine) and some were more colorful, promoting the race itself. I don't know... This run, it just didn't live up to what I was hoping for. So Fallbrook, I'm sorry for the 2-stars. But that's what updates are for. And if you didn't receive criticism such as these, you wouldn't have the need to improve. And improving is what I expect will be on the table for next year. I congratulate your hosting this what-could-have-been-so-much-better run. This is constructive, by the way. Mistakes allow for growth. So...keep growing. Having an uphill run, 30:36:3. (Seems wrong though. Maybe it was gun time.) O.o

You go here to redeem and each of us received a card. they had stickers to label the cards to tell them apart. We did the 18 hole miniature golf, go karts, and batting cages. The go kart has a separate toddler track near the batting cages. I actually got bored on the track because they have you out there for a good 10 minutes and all you do is go in circles. The batting cages were tricky based on the speed of the ball. Make sure you wear your helmets. Afterwards we played in the arcade. We ordered nachos for $3.75. They asked if we wanted jalapeños, we said on the side. Turns out, it was $1 charge for a small container! At least be honest and give heads up. I was wondering why nachos cost almost double. Plenty of seating everywhere. Private parties were happening all over.

Inside, there is a seating section where you can watch a game while eating or having a drink. The arcade is right next to it as it is all an open-space which is nice. Heading outside, there are a variety of activities to choose from. They've got 2 x 18 holes of putt-putt golf with fun, festive layouts. The electric go-karts drove fast for go-kart level and it was a fun track as well. I can probably count the number of times I've played laser-tag on 2 hands but a couple of times the laser didn't work but at Mulligans it worked both times we've been there. Super fun! They even have a toddler section with a little playground, a couple slow rides and slow go/karts. They just gotta get a couple tv's up on the wall of the outdoor seating area. They probably used to have them up so I'm assuming they'll be putting new ones up.

Where to begin for my review of the 5KHR Kiss Wine Run...1st off I have to say that I wouldn't have…read moregiven it even one star if that was an option on Yelp. Additionally, I would have posted this review on the Facebook page of the event, but all negative comments, including the one I posted on the day of the race, were deleted unfortunately. I've run multiple 5K's, and have never seen a more disorganized event. At first the communication from 5KHR seemed good, yet as the race got closer it became somewhat apparent that the organization of the race was leaving something to be desired. The continued messages about the lunch option being taken away and/or limited was confusing, and should have been taken as a heads up. Additionally, the information regarding the "custom gender specific shirts" was confusing, as originally direction for attire for the race said to dress up in your Valentine's Day themed attire for a "Best Costume" contest. All of this could be ignored, absolutely, if the event had been well organized, fun, etc...however it was not. 1. Parking was a disaster...we parked on the side of the street because traffic was so bad, which we'd been warned about, but when we walked up to the parking we overheard parking attendants saying that they would be turning people away soon. Are you kidding me?!?! 2. I'd paid extra to receive my swag bag and bib in the mail, so it wasn't an issue for me, so I speak for my friends. The organization for the line to pick up bibs, shirts, and swag bags was ridiculous. The line was long, which we expected, and were fine with. However when in line we were handed bibs by a volunteer, which lead me to consider "how do they know we even paid". Additionally, when we got close to the front of the line, we expected a checklist of names with shirt sizes and such so that you knew whether or not we'd picked up our stuff, which there was nothing. The shirts were just sitting on the table and people were digging through them to grab their size. No bags were available. I understand from your Press Release that was supposed to be an apology letter that they had been stolen. To this I ask where were the employees or volunteers manning this station? Theft wouldn't have been an issue with staff manning the check in. 3. The porta potties...holy cow the porta potties. There were only four...for an event with 1600 participants by your count, and countless spectators. According to porta potty calculators available online, there should have been at least 17 potties, 6 hand wash stations, and 1 handicap accessible toilet available for an event with alcohol lasting 4 hours...according to your count. Four porta potties that were overflowing by 930am is disgusting, unsanitary, and frankly, probably a violation of health policies to say the least, and the lack of hand washing stations makes it worse. 4. The course. Now the course was beautiful, however that is no credit to 5KHR by any means...the credit for that goes solely to Mount Palomar Winery. The preparation of the course including the clearing of it, the release of waves, the marking of the path, the water stations, and the volunteers for safety purposes was atrocious. I personally did attempt to run, but due to the mentioned issues was unable to do so easily. I had to dodge debris all over the course, and even tripped on a two foot piece of wire that was sticking out of the ground on the edge of the course! Additionally, many people were confused by the course as the markers were difficult to see and/or confusing. There were no mile markers to let you know where you were in the run, as well as no defined finish line. When I reached the courtyard party area I hadn't even reached two miles, so ran another lap of the course in order to get my full 5K worth of the run. Many didn't do this due to their frustration. Overall I am beyond frustrated by the lack of organization of 5KHR in this event, as well as the reaction to feedback received. While I understand the coordinator's frustration with actions taken by some participants, I, for one, was not one of them, and am offended by the accusations and lack of official apology. As a coordinator of such an event a certain amount of professionalism and customer service is expected, and was not shown in that letter. Attached are screenshot pictures of the Press Release that is supposed to act as an apology apparently.

I left this race a little confused…read moreabout what the heck just happened: did I just run a 5K? did I cross a finish line? am I dying of thirst? LOL I actually was bummed after I left and then moved on. THEN I got their press release. How offensive and rude of them to take zero blame for everything that happened and to actually blame us the customers that paid. I don't think the behavior they mentioned is acceptable, but I did not behave like this and felt like they were generalizing everyone. I don't think it was unreasonable for me to require: 1. A safe course 2. A clear finish line 3. Water 4. A race bib 5. A race bag 6. Pins for my race bib I don't care about lines, but I do care that I did not receive anything that I paid for. I would avoid 5KHR at all costs, even if it was free. I have organized a few non-profit 5K races and never have I had issues like I saw here. I don't wish to see any business fail, however when a business can't admit fault and offer a true apology they should no longer be in business.

So many hidden fees on top of the race fee - $15/20 to park - extra $5 per person to pick up packet on race day - insurance--for them not you. And they're probably going to need it 2. Parking in a field advertised at 3/4 mile walk from the start. Nope. Actually closer to 1.5 miles - the walk to/from the parking lot overlaps the "race" course so if you want to get out of there the minute you finish (and you will), you will be obstructing many people trying to finish the route. 2. Quality of the course -enter the need for the organizer to have insurance. So treacherous. Long grass, rutted dirt roads, exposed roots, potholes mud etc. if this was advertised as a trail run I sure missed it. - course starts on a moderately steep downhill, which is also the same moderately steep uphill you'll get to finish on. The walkers and the runners were not adequately sorted at the beginning of the race despite the relatively lame attempt to sort people by pace. Walkers in waves designed for people running a sub six minute pace would stop abruptly in front of runners going down this hill. It was super dangerous. 3. Started over 15 minutes late. Not a super big deal but irritating after being directed show up early to make sure that everybody started on time. This is not an event for actual runners which is fine, but just know this going into it. Take it as a casual walk through a moderately treacherous dusty course. Start at the end of the pack and enjoy some quality wine. Better yet, save your cash, don't give these people your money and buy more wine!

When I checked the website for details, there was no additional information. The race was listed as starting at 10 AM, but the directions were unclear and there was no mention of additional fees. For starters, Parking ended up being $20. Packet pickup was also frustrating. There was an unexpected $5 fee to receive my shirt and bib, but their payment systems were not working, so many participants could not pay leading to slower and longer lines. Even the volunteers seemed confused about the fee, and some people were allowed through without being charged. After waiting in line, I found out the race actually started at noon, not 10 AM. Running at noon in April in Phoenix, where temperatures are at least 85°F, does not make sense and raises concerns about runner safety. Overall, the event was poorly organized and poorly communicated. I checked my junk mail to see if I had missed anything, but there was nothing there, and many other participants said the same, many did not receive an email in the main inbox or junk & didn't find adequate information on the website. What should have been a fun experience felt disorganized, frustrating, and a bit of a grift. I also spoke with several volunteers who said their experience was just as confusing. When I raised concerns with the person in charge, there was no acknowledgment or accountability. It is disappointing to pay $50 for an un-timed 5k race, plus $5 for packet pickup and $20 for parking, and receive such a subpar experience. I have never had a race like this before, and I hope the organizers improve their communication, logistics, and overall planning. If you're considering running this race, don't.
