I hired Jonathan to replace the backsplash tile in my kitchen. He quoted a price and required 1/3 up front, and 1/3 after the first day. After telling me the job would take ~3 days, he left the second day without all the old tile even being removed. He came on the third day, and then left at noon to get lunch or something. He never came back. He said he would drop something off that night, but never did. He never answered his phone again. I paid him 2/3 of his price and he disappeared without even having the old tile fully removed. It cost me more than his initial quote to have someone else come and finish the job. I don't think this business exists anymore, but just in case, I'm going to leave this review to say DO NOT HIRE this contractor. And if you do, do not pay anything in advance. read more

Wow! We transformed our fireplace wall with large floor tiles. Jonathan was meticulous and clean and finished the job on time and to perfection. Check out the before and after photos! Save $10,000 on a custom fireplace beam by making your own out of a 2x4 and a 2x6. Stain and mount to the wall for a stunning and affordable mantel. Thanks to Jonathan, mounting the mantel was a breeze. He had already marked the studs, so it was quick and easy. read more

Highly recommend! Great value and great end result!! The photos speak for themselves. We recently used Jonathan as the finishing touch to our kitchen renovation. Communication was great and as every construction project goes there are delays which Johnathon was able to accommodate with compassion and ease. So rare! The entire project took 4 days. Jonathan recommended what grout to purchase a few weeks before the project. Then he got to work and took the time to create the design based on the variation in the tile. It turned out just as I had envisioned and would have Jonathan do our next tile job no question! Tile: Tile Bar Portmore White Grout: Mapei Avalanche read more

Had a great experience working with Jonathan. We had a tiling job in our bathroom that spanned over 6 days. Jonathan was very communicative throughout the process and good at rolling with the punches. We had an issue where the wall wasn't completely straight and he ended up having to build it out a little bit more to get the tiling done. He was able to professionally assess the situation, we had cracked tiling and he removed them and laid a foundation with concrete before setting our tile. He also had great advice with aesthetics and suggested we lay the frost color for our grout. All in all our bathroom looks great now! There was a minor issue of not being able to put the plumbing back together so Jonathan very fairly suggested we get a discount and find a plumbing professional but we were very satisfied with our service so we wanted to gave him the full amount and ordered him Italian cookies he liked as well! We recommend him to all our friends for future work when they are redoing tiling as well. As a side note, Jonathan was also very great with our dog who has a bit of anxiety and would bark at him (strange man making loud noises to our dog!) But he was very patient and even made the effort to feed our dog treats and get down on his level so our dog knew he was not a threat. A work in progress, but we tell our dog that Jonathan is the nice man that made our bathroom beautiful! Thanks Jonathan! read more

We are towards the end of a major kitchen remodel. We needed a backsplash for over our cooktop and along a long countertop. I reached out to a couple tile installers and checked Yelp. Based on Jonathan's stellar Yelp reviews, I reached out to him as well. I got a response that same day, he gave me a quote. He was fairly priced and we set up a date to get started. Jonathan is an absolute pleasure to work with. He was careful, timely, professional, clean and very talented. I highly recommend Jonathan and Distinctive tile. We are looking at a bathroom in the future and will ABSOLUTELY use Jonathan for any and all tile work we need. He shows up on time, he is excellent at communication so we knew what to expect and did just beautiful work. Our husky Lola loved him and he was just so good at what he does. We had a glass mosaic tile installed and it was a pleasure watching him place small pieces with great care. Jon, it was a pleasure. read more

I had an ambitious project and sent Jonathan a message based off of the Yelp reviews. This dude is legit. What impressed me the most is when he pointed out an error instead of trying to hide it. He then corrected the error after discussing the issue. Integrity is the most important quality on a contractor. I left him alone in my house for a week due to work commitments. He is totally trustworthy. I wanted a custom grout color. He went WAY beyond my expectations to achieve the color that was what I desired. His solutions to challenging issues were superb. I'm looking forward to working with him again. read more

I can't say enough good things about Jonathan's work. He was great to work with! I really liked the fact that he does the work himself. He offered suggestions and explained everything. Jonathan does amazing work! He was very professional throughout the process from our estimate to the installation. We were thoroughly impressed with his work on our fireplace and entryway. He is very detail oriented, punctual, polite, and a pleasure to work with. He transformed both spaces and paid extra attention to all details of the project which we truly appreciated. We have already referred Jonathan to friends that need tile work done, and plan on using him in the future for our kitchen remodel. Thanks again for your amazing tile work!! I reached out to Jonathan because he had great reviews on Yelp, and I was getting high quotes from other vendors in my search. He came over for the quote and explained everything very thoroughly, was patient with all of my questions, and got back to me very promptly with his numbers. I hired him for the job (new kitchen back splash and master shower floor tile) and it was only up from there. He is always on time, and I have never seen a vendor clean up at the end of the day like Jonathan does. It was a 5 day job and each evening I forgot it was ongoing because there was hardly any trace of his tools! Jonathan is also a very pleasant person, and a delight to have in your home. If you are looking for someone who is hard-working, looking for the best deal on materials for you, and does meticulously detailed work-Jonathan is your guy. Very pleased. read more

I contacted several contractors to get quotes for tiling my bathroom. Jonathan was quick to reply with questions that he needed answered to generate a quote. His quote detailed exactly what was included in the price and provided a date when he'd be available. Jonathan arrived on the date/time we agreed and laid-down tarps for a walking path to ensure the floor would stay clean. He completed the work on the schedule he estimated. The bathroom looks amazing and the work was completed with quality. Jonathan is very friendly and I'd hire him again for any tile work. read more

I was thrilled with Jonathan's service and his workmanship. Our kitchen needed some extra care as due to timing, we had to install our new cabinets before we could do the tiling. I had a few companies come to give us a quote but they all said they would most likely damage the cabinets and that we'd need to get our exhaust hood removed before they begin. Jonathan was completely different. He assured me that he works very carefully and on his own (no sub-contractors or helpers) and would not damage the cabinetry. He also took care of the hood with no problems as it was just a slide on cover. Jonathan is punctual, he works very carefully and takes care to minimise any mess from the demolition. I would recommend Jonathan to anyone. read more

Jon did our kitchen floor...about 240 square feet with awful tile (actually glued to plywood, no cement board underneath). We also wanted a new back splash installed. Jon gave us a great quote and answered all of our questions. It was a no-brainer to pick him, compared to others I talked to. The project took about a week, and everyday Jon showed up on time, and always answered calls/texts after hours. I appreciated this. Jon worked with us on the layout of the tile and was accommodating to some last minute changes and requests. He was always professional and thorough. After the project completion, he answered all my followup questions. We are ecstatic with the kitchen...it's beautiful. I plan on redoing my master bathroom soon, and Jon will be my tile guy. Jonathan transformed our drab granite fireplace into a piece of art! Jonathan is a true professional, very polite, with a good sense of humor. He was a pleasure to work with from the start. All of the dimensions and details about the fireplace surround were discussed over email. He told me how much tile to buy and then he came to the house as planned. He definitely knows his craft and I appreciated his knowledge and attention to detail. We chose a challenging marble mosaic tile. Jonathan made precise cuts and payed special attention to make the opening of the fireplace look spectacular! We couldn't be happier with the end result- amazing, just amazing!! I contracted Jonathan to install our kitchen backsplash and it was a great experience from start to finish. I emailed him a photograph of the area to be tiled, along with dimensions and the type of tiling that we wanted. Jonathan quickly replied, and over the course of a couple of emails we hammered out details around edging, caulking, grout color and so forth. Jonathan came back with a very fair quote. I felt very comfortable working with Jonathan as he ended up asking far more detailed questions before giving us a quote than did anybody else we asked. On the day of the work, Jonathan showed up exactly when promised. He is very personable and very knowledgeable and did a great job. Jonathan is very clearly a perfectionist! At the end of the day we had a new backsplash that was practically flawless. We needed to get rid of our ugly outdated tile backsplash in our kitchen. Was going to give a shot myself, but quickly discovered the person who installed it (me) had put it on so well that there was no way I could remove it. We found Jonathan here on Yelp and contacted him. He was very communicative while we bought our tile and scheduled him. Took a few days for the demo and install. He showed up on time everyday. The tile install looks great. Jonathan did a great job with the penny mosaic tile. We would not hesitate to hire him again. read more

I give my highest recommendation for Jon. He installed a back splash in our kitchen and we are thrilled with both the process and the results. He was professional and friendly throughout everything. Jon responded quickly, came in person to review our needs and provide a (very reasonable) quote. He gave us great advice about picking out and purchasing our tiles as well as a recommendation for a tile store. His advice led to us finding exactly what we wanted and paying half the price for tiles that we thought we would. Jon was meticulous with his measurements and careful and methodical in his work, and it still managed to be a quick and painless process (at least for us!). He didn't even seem phased by my maniac barking dog who provided a constant background to his work. We will definitely hire him for any future tiling needs. Thanks! read more

Jonathan is incredible. We previously hired a painter / tile guy to install backsplash in our kitchen and half-way through his job we realized it was not up to par with our expectations. We had them stop work and contacted Jonathan for help. He responded quickly and even walked us through how to demo the prior work in order to save a little money since we had already paid the other contractor a portion of the fees. He was available the same week and installed our backsplash without any issues. Even though the tiles came on a mesh he took them off the mesh and placed them 1 by 1 allowing us to have a much smaller grout line. They look so incredible. Only think I would change would be to have started with Jonathan from the start to save the headache with the first guys. Thanks Jonathan! read more

Jonathan is fantastic. He just finished our tile backsplash and it looks great. He was extremely prompt in responding to my questions and getting the project scheduled. It took three days total (which included demo). My husband is an architect and was very impressed with the quality of Jonathan's work. We will be using him again when we redo our bathroom later this year. We highly recommend Jonathan. The price also seemed reasonable (especially for our neighborhood - west loop). read more

This review is LONG overdue but as everyone else has stated, Jonathon is incredible. A total perfectionist who will go above and beyond and treat your project as if it were being done in his own home. We started with a very un-level and carpeted basement (~1,000sq ft) in our 100+ year old house which Jonathon meticulously turned into a flat, beautifully tiled, second living room. And if the space wasn't challenging enough, the walls were rarely straight and of course the tile we selected had 13 individually sized pieces which needed to be laid in a specific pattern. Jonathan took this challenge head on and while it may have taken a couple of extra days to get it just right (again, the room, additional leveling, etc), the finished product was absolutely amazing. We could not have asked for a better craftsman to work with and would recommend him to anyone, any time, any size job. read more

Jonathan is the best! His work is high quality and he does the job right the first time. He was quick to respond to our request and we communicated over email about the entire project. We hired Jonathan to do our backsplash in our newly remodeled kitchen after reading all of the positive reviews on Yelp. He was professional and timely from measuring and giving us an estimate through to the end of installation. He was always available to answer questions via phone/text or email. He explained the process and offered his professional opinion when we weren't sure of our choices. As he was starting the kitchen window wall, I decided I wanted to tile to go all the way up to the ceiling instead of stopping below the cabinet and he was completely flexible. I think the entire thing turned out even better than I could even imagine and it is because of Jonathan. We have an old, 70's raised ranch home where nothing is straight or level and Jonathan was able to work with it. He's definitely a pro. read more

I cannot say enough good things about Jonathan and Distinctive Designs Tile! He put a subway tile backsplash up in our kitchen and we couldn't be happier with the outcome! We're still in awe of how great it looks! In fact, looking at it very closely after he left, we even said "If you were to point out anything wrong with his work what could you possibly say?" He is extremely skilled and does not cut corners AT ALL. Our job was not your typical, simple backsplash as we had 3 walls in need of tile, one of which has 3 windows on it. Since it is an old building, time has left uneven thin gaps between the window sills and the counter top- when Jonathan came over to give us a quote we told him not to worry about those areas, that we would just paint them white to blend in the the window sills. Well, Jonathan took his care and skill to the tile saw and cute perfect, thin pieces of tile to fit there! We are still so impressed with his work and his work ethic. Besides that, he is an extremely easy going and cool guy. You won't be disappointed if you hire him!!!!!!!!! read more

Jonathan did an excellent job on our hearth and fireplace surround. I cannot be happier with the job he did. He is exacting, which is just what is needed when it comes to tile work. We had such high hopes. Based on the other amazing yelp reviews, we thought this was a professional business and were looking forward to working with someone who knows what they're doing. Nope. After many emails between Jonathan and my husband, even sending his proof of insurance and other professional documents for our building to have on file, he completely flaked and never showed up. It's been almost a week and we STILL have no apology email or any type of follow up. I understand things come up or schedule conflicts happen. Jonathan was fantastic. We found the positive reviews here on Yelp and reached out to him to redo our shower floor. Our previous contractor had used subpar materials and had not properly sealed our marble floors, allowing them to be stained by our rusty water. Communication was easy and always timely (which is a rarity with many contractors). He was polite, prompt, professional and delivered on everything he said he would. We live in a high-rise downtown, with lots of rules, and Jonathan was very thoughtful to ask what was needed and communicated with our maintenance staff on a daily basis to ensure there were no issues. His attention to detail was amazing and he takes great care to do the job the right way. We were wary of using marble again, but he assured us with his fixes and the high-quality products he was using that everything would be great. He even gave us some professional sealer to use and keep to help maintain our floors. I would highly recommend Jonathan to anyone who is looking for tile work.
