We enrolled in about 4 other camps and this is the only camp where my daughter has come home excited to share about the day's activities. Activities are screen free and intentionally match each week's theme. They have weekly water play and field trips. They seem extremely organized. Also conveniently located a short walk from the metro and inside (helpful on extremely hot days). If all goes well, we'll likely just do this camp next year. Honestly think it's one of the better camps in Takoma.

This review is for the Mad Science Summer Camp ONLY…read more This business is the kind where they find a place to rent out for a few weeks sight unseen *so the venue can be filthy, falling apart, dangerous as in failing equipment, broken down classroom seating and utensils, and they won't know it. Our camp was housed in a filthy and musty public elementary school in a small classroom. This room was too small for the entire group and so all were cramped. The reality was ALARMING that the instructors function as bodies to direct a script but are not truly educators *so you can have a recent college grad with a BA in History teaching your kid "science" and add to that a person not in tune, or give a hoot about kids, how to educate, nurture nor watch over children. Worst of all and YIKES they do not not pay attention nor supervise these kids, they are hands off if any trouble or accidents happen and they do not report injuries to the parents. These instructors are oblivious about harm done to the student and are more worried about having time to get and eat lunch, drinking Starbucks, being on their phones, etc.* SOOOOOO With that as the preface all I can say is do not waste your money because your child will not learn much science. All they will get is a babysitter who pretends to be a teacher, who if you are lucky feigns cheeriness, add to that the other children in the class will not respect the instructor nor their peers and as in the case of my daughter, get physically injured. SO WHAT HAPPENED? An experiment went sideways and my daughters entire back had the skin scraped off while being pulled by a boy to the point that her shirt came up while being pulled the equipment broke, and the skin came off she was left with a raw back, no attention was given and it was bleeding. The instructor kept her mouth SHUT and only when I went to hug my daughter once I picked her up, did she cry out in pain and showed me her entire back was still bleeding. The instructors were gone by then so I had to wait until the next day. I went up to the main instructor the next day and told her it was unacceptable to hide a severe injury such as what my daughter had suffered and all she could muster was "I AM SORRY I HAD NO CLUE ANYTHING HAPPENED" Huh? Aren't they watching a group of 6 and 7 year olds? And there were 2 instructors for the group. It has been wonderful to see her progress she is already beginning to recognize letters and numbers, which makes us very proud. She speaks highly of her teachers and enjoys spending time with her classmates. The school director, Koshila, is very professional, supportive, and clearly dedicated to maintaining a high standard for the school. All the staff members are kind, helpful, and genuinely seem to love what they do. I especially appreciate the regular communication from the school. I receive emails and photos that keep me updated on my daughter's daily activities, which gives me great peace of mind. I had heard many positive things about this kindergarten from friends, but now I have experienced it myself and can confidently say it is very well organized and nurturing. I expressed this to the school when touring as well as when enrolling. They ensured me they are equip to handle this and she is in good hands HOWEVER things went from bad to worst! My first red flag was the school calling me on day 4 of enrollment asking can I pick her up because there policy is the first week is half a day. ON DAY 4 AFTER SHE HAS BEEN IN SCHOOL FROM 8AM-5PM MONDAY TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY!!! Being the parent I am I went to the school and picked my baby up. I inquired AGAIN is this a good fit for my daughter because Im starting to feel like its not and there all over the place. AGAIN they told me yes there were equipment to handle her. ON DAY 10 I arrived at the school at 9am the teacher was not in the class.. I saw administration and they seemed lost that the teacher was not there but took my daughter and said everything was under control. When I came to pick up my daughter I requested to speak with the owner Rakhi De. In the meeting my first question was what happened to the teacher. She told me the teacher quit because the kids were "BAD" and began to blame my daughter saying that she colored on walls and the other kids followed. THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE FOR A PROVIDER TO BLAME A CHILD THAT HAS BEEN IN THE SCHOOL 2 WEEKS 10 DAYS FOR A TEACHER QUITTING. THIS WAS NEVER BOUGHT TO MY ATTENTION BEFORE THIS DAY SO I BELIEVED IT WAS A DEFENSE MECHANISM!! I was upset left and got my child. The next day I spoke with the Director Marian White-Hood. I told her everything that happened the previous day. She told me that the school only had been open 1 year ( I was not aware) and the turn over rate is bad with teachers and they are underpaid. She also informed me they pay more for the camera's in the class than the do the teachers ( this shows how much the care about there staff). She also expressed how she was going to ask the parents if they could pay extra to get a better teacher in the classroom. The school is already 2150 a month! With all that being said this school does not care about your child's development there more concerned with the money. This was my child's last day there and I wouldn't recommend any one to send there child here. There were no lesson plans the kids ran wild everyday I watched the camera no discipline no structure. My daughter is in a new private school currently and I must say sometimes you have to go through the rain to get a rainbow.

The rope course was insanely fun, the giant swing and zip line were a blast and our favorite part was honestly the rock climbing! This was my first experience with a Fairfax County Rec Camp and I was pleased with how well run it was despite the limitations of being held in a community room setting. I asked my daughter how they were able to separate the classroom for each recipe and she mentioned it was very organized and every day she got to try out new skills like chopping (her only complaint -- she wishes they had real knives instead of the safety ones), whisking, measuring, and even washing dishes (she would NEVER at home). The staff while young, was friendly and upbeat and remembered my daughter's name by the second day. They paid attention to allergies, and even pulled me aside to let me know how well she was doing in the class since they knew she gets nervous in new spaces. My nephew is a passionate, energetic, competitive, HIGHLY intelligent (you know, that kind of kid…read morethat asks you huge existential/meaning of life questions while waiting in line at the drugstore) kiddo. The Lab has become his second home. I am SO SO thankful that he has found this community and art form. Breaking provides him with a creative outlet to be both competitive, and an expressive individual while maintaining an over all positive and supportive team outlook. He is no longer crushed by 'loosing'. He appreciates the skills of others and the teachers and older students both support and challenge him. His confidence, humility, physical strength, focus, patience, and empathy have grown enormously. As he is obsessed with break dancing he now has ways of connecting and learning about many other related topics. He has traveled to new cities to watch break dancing, he asks his uncle (my husband - a music producer) about the musical and cultural history of break beats. I also love that The Lab has exposed my nephew to teachers and mentors who externally are different from him (and our immediate family). He is meeting and learning from people of different ages, gender identies, races, creeds etc. Having a diversity of role models and teachers in your formative years is so important!
