We spent our Fourth of July at Terrapin and it was absolutely wonderful! From being welcomed at the desk (I am so sorry I can't remember his name!), to our awesome guides Justin and Jasmine, to Scott who helped at the swing and doing the belay to get us down - we truly enjoyed the whole experience (despite the unbearable heat this weekend). Justin and Jasmine made sure we stayed hydrated, and regularly brought us into the air conditioning to avoid overheating. They ensured our safety every moment we were there. The rope course was insanely fun, the giant swing and zip line were a blast and our favorite part was honestly the rock climbing! Justin and Jasmine were fantastic - we will definitely come back (preferably not during a heat wave haha) and hope they will be our guides again - every single person today made it memorable for my family! Oh oh oh!! I loved this place! I purchased a group ticket so I was able to take a date and a few friends!! It was so much fun! There is so much to do depending on what you are comfortable with! They offer zip lining, rock climbing, swing plunge and so much more! Of course I did everything I was able to since I am a complete dare devil!!! Love the thrill! The plunging swing is AMAZING and so worth a try!! I did it about four times and then a separate group were waiting so of course I have to be fair! The staff seemed really nice from inside when you are checking in to the staff that was outside helping out when needed!! They were willing to answer questions if there were any and just were genuinely nice. If after the course you desire to go shopping or maybe you are hungry, they have a few stores and some places to eat inside the welcome store. Terrapin Adventures Rocks! I visited this location in Savage, Maryland for a little family zip lining fun and had a ball! This is the perfect place for team building, a cool date, or just a little exercise. Different packages are offered, different obstacle courses/activities are offered and they're all at reasonable prices. Check online for costs and activities. Terrapin Adventures prides themselves in safety, so before you do anything, you're required to sign a waiver and you also go over instructions with a guide and you're assigned a few guides with you throughout the duration of your activity. All of the guides we encountered were very helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. Terrapin even has a few restaurants on the inside of the welcome center, as well as a few stores. A very cool place to try something different and add a little "adventure" to your life! read more

Looking for some different, something new, I came here with a group of friends to test the challenge course. We signed up for an all-day adventure. First things first: When you arrive you have to check in at the counter. Upon checking in, you'll be assigned a guide and all necessary equipment like helmet and harness. You'll be briefed on safety, because that's a huge concern with things like this. Once you get the green light to charge off into the sunset, or in this case, the playground. Our first stop was the climbing wall. There are around 12 paths to go up and it's around 43 feet high. I don't care how old you are, it's Mondo fun. We spent the morning racing each other up every which way. There's even this weird net-like tube that you can jump into and go down. Check out the pictures, it's weird and gives you a weird feeling when you're in it, like your mom is just giving birth to you. Or like you're a huge turd being shat out by a grizzly bear or something. Moving on; the "high ropes" challenge. 3 levels of various elements guaranteed to test your strength and agility. You'll face things like a hanging cargo net and tight rope. You even get a chance to free fall or kamikaze jump safely to the ground. Don't worry; there are a lot of safety features built into this course. Next up; the giant swing. Guaranteed to make a grown man scream like a little girl. I know this from experience. My friend, a United States Marine, so squealed like a little piggy, we had to check his pants and make sure he didn't have an "accident". It was too funny. Last item; the zip line. I must warn you that this was my least favorite attraction. Not because I've zip lined in the jungles of Costa Rica, but because it was just entirely too wimpy, period. It's like they were thinking about what else they could add and someone said, "Let's put up a zip line.....over in that corner". Maybe for little munchkins, it might be loads of fun. But for an adult, me thinks not. So all in all, it's a great place to take a day trip with your friends too. I'm going back one of these days. read more

Kind of a mess. We tried the high ropes course, and ended up in a group with two small kids (around 7 y/o) without their parents, and one instructor, who seemed poorly trained. The two kids held up the whole group, because the instructor sent them through everything first. This also meant the instructor couldn't get to them to help when they got stuck. She ended up getting frustrated at those kids, and then she got frustrated at the whole group because of the delays. I don't blame her though. This is a symptom of poor management. We won't be coming back. read more

This is the place where a kid can be a kid & grown-ups can be kids too! I love this place. I first came to Terrapin on a dare. Some friends said that I would 'never' zip-line, so I HAD to prove them wrong! LoL! While gliding through the trees 30 ft. in the air, along a suspended 3/8 inch steel cable, I could see from that vantage point that the entire outdoor park was amazing! At Terrapin Adventures, families, friends, work-groups can enjoy zip-lining, obstacle courses, rock wall climbing, kayaking, biking, caving, geocaching, backpacking, river tubing and so much more. Three teachers and I brought about 30 8th graders here for a day of fun. Our group leader was Emily, and she was awesome. From what I can observe, the whole staff was amazing. To start, we got the three safety rules. Once we were in our groups, Emily took the time to get to know each of my students with two fun "ice- breakers". My kiddos loved it. First, we did the zip-line. As you can imagine, some of my students were afraid, but the gentleman at the top was a comedian. He was able to calm their fears, and he was patient. Definitely, a character trait needed with a group of middle schoolers. Then, we went to the "high course". Although I didn't participate in this one, the students loved it. They students were still connected to cords, but they were really high in the trees. Super fun to watch! Again, the whole staff was out making sure that everything was safe for everyone. There is also a rocking climb, as well as a rope and tire climb. Of course, it was fun, and I can truly say, this was a true workout. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, including the staff. Their interaction with students were great. My favorite was the giant swing. It was AWESOME! Just GO!!! I feel like this would be a great date night, as well as a great place to team build or have a birthday party. The staff is suberb, and the location is solid. I had such high hopes for Terrapin. Now, keep in mind, this review is only for the tubing portion--those doing the high ropes seemed to be having ALL kinds of fun! After an extremely long and grueling semester, some friends and I decided that we needed a day trip, and what better to relax than tubing down a river with ice cold be...er...waters? A friend arranged all of the plans and according to the website needed to not make reservations... We finally find Terrapin (who's address is both confusing and not easy to find) and go in to the mall where their office is located. "Did you make reservations?" they ask..."no, the website said it was not necessary" "oh, well, you need them" After about 40 minutes of complicated plans and waiver signing they hand us our tubes and complimentary straps...straps?? What for?? Oh, right....WE carry our tubes the 15 minutes to the river and then carry them back... $20 per person for ME to carry a tube that probably costs less than that price and fit them in a Honda Civic?? we were a sight to see...Sigh... SO what have we learned?? Most tubing places I have ever been to put you on a bus (where you don't have to deal with tubes flying off your car--see picture) take you to the river, and pick you up again. NOT here. To be fair to Terrapin though, all the staff we encountered were very friendly and extremely helpful if not overly enthusiastic (I am reminded of drama camp counselors). I think with a couple of easy to see signs, and a shuttle to the river this day could have been much more hassel-free. Get it together Terrapin, you have SO much potential! read more

We took our 4th graders on a field trip to Terrapin Adventures. They berated our students. Often screaming when a reminder could have been given. They yelled, "Shut up" at our students and one worker was extremely rough with one of our students with special needs. Students said they overheard staff members cursing. The sarcastic demeanor left our students with remembering how they were treated more than they remembered the actual activities of the field trip. read more

My husband and I booked the high rope course, zip line, and giant swing. I unfortunately didn't make it through the high ropes because of my fear of heights (I was trying this to get over said fear but I in fact learned that's probably never going to happen). That being said, the staff was fantastic from the start, to dealing with my blubbering a**, and then with my husband through the rest of the activities. They tried valiantly to help me get through it and were patient when I figured out it wasn't going to happen. My husband had a great time doing all of the other activities and both of us would highly recommend the staff and the activities. I hope to come back for a different adventure soon. So I will start off by saying, "I went here on my birthday..." The past few reviews have been this way BUT I love my birthday! and I love spending time with friends and family whenever I can so this was a day adventure for just me and Matty. We chose the PERFECT weekend to go. We tried doing this in October for Matt's birthday but it was sold out for weeks!! When we found out it would be in the 60's for my birthday, we knew we wanted to be outdoors-usually a hike. Last minute I thought of checking Terrapin Adventures. There was plenty of open slots. We did Terrapin Challenge from 10-2pm for $80 each. Go big or go home, right? They informed us we chose the perfect weekend since usually the customer:instructor ratio is usually terrible during warm weekends. My favorites were the swing and leap of faith! Least favorite for the head first caterpillar way on the tower. DO NOT DO THAT. It is so tight and I have never felt claustrophobic until that moment in my life. My only thing I wasn't a big fan of is the instructors fooling around throwing snow at each other, they accidentally ended up hitting a customer. I wouldn't care if it was me, but think others should have a heads up. Also, I was informed that all the instructors we were working with were all brand new. I think they should be more mixed with experienced instructors since we are very high in the air. At one point, I was stuck on the third tier and he didn't offer any help. I literally couldn't move my harness. It was the first time I felt a freak out was necessary. Later I found out he was a new instructor.... I highly suggest going if you like adventure! read more

Summer Adventure Camp, OPsac 2019 The place has potential, but they were disorganized. We booked a 4 hour block for our campers. We actually had about 1 1/2 hours of activity. I had to speak to the boss several times to get the guides to do what they were supposed to do. It could have been a lot of fun and challenging adventure for our campers. On the way home almost every one of them told me how disappointed they were. We paid for 4 hours and got 1 1/2. Was way too expensive for the price. Will never take camp there again/ read more

Came here today for a pre-birthday celebration and had a great time! It was a bit chilly so I advise visiting on a warm day. We did the terrapin challenge which is the best value as you get to do all the major attractions except the drop zone as it is closed for maintenance. The guides are very nice and patient through the course, this was my first time so I did have a few mini freak outs! I liked that we started off with the ziplining since it took some of the edge off before the rope course. Don't underestimate the thrill of the tree swing, I screamed the entire time! Be prepared to use your upper body on the ropes and climbs so I'm glad to be regular at the gym! After the adventure you're greeted at the exit with a nice cup of hot chocolate! I came here for a team building session with about 30 people. Honestly I usually hate these kinds of things because they're so cheesy and largely unproductive. But Terrapin Adventures actually made it thoroughly interesting and entertaining. The staff here is excellent. They're friendly, funny and knowledgable and it feels like they're all family. We did some interesting team building activities such as being blinded folded and having to fit 30 people on about 8 tree stumps. My favorite part was their huge swinging chair which is a must-try. It doesn't look that bad at first but it's actually really high up from the ground and you can hear screams when the rope is released. Another must-try is their zip line which went faster than I expected. Lastly they also have a rock climbing area which is fun for beginners. Overall this is a fun place for team building but mostly geared toward a younger crowd. read more

Neutral: your kid may love or loathe the height.. A teaching opportunity to reassure your kid that you should trust safety harnesses & encourage them to keep going forward...as there holding up the course flow. Parents/staff may consider sequencing kids by order of their height/initiative. My daughter had stent where older faster party goer was right behind her & effectively breathing down her neck as she methodically worked the course/heights at her pace. Negative: from the photography standpoint parents should bring a zoom lens & sign waivers to have option to roam beneath obstacle structure. I brought my students here today to participate in a group experiential learning experience. This place was fun, and surrounded by gorgeous views! Every year we begin fall semester with a ropes challenge course, and returning students (participated last year with a different company) overwhelmingly agreed that they got more out of their experience with Terrapin Adventures. We had three helpers: Billy, James, and Corey, all of whom were fantastic! This place is great for pure recreation with friends, good wholesome family fun, or group learning. Had a Capitol Deal voucher - I think it was pay $25 for $50 worth of select activities. Glad I had a voucher because I would have been upset had I paid full price for everything. I was disappointed that stand up paddle boarding wasn't one of the activities in this deal, but made do. Some of the other reviewers got it right about the quality of the activities I tried: giant swing, ropes tower/rock climbing, ziplining. I liked them in that order. Interestingly enough, I hadn't signed up for the giant swing, but after seeing it, decided to try. TAs makes it very easy to add on to your day....just go up to the office and pay. The folks working there were great and full of energy. Kudos to them for making it a fun experience. And yes, the ziplining was kind of a joke, and I haven't even ever done it before. So I came here with six other people for my friends birthday party and I can honestly say that it was really fun. Most of us are over the age 27 so you can tell that it is a good experience for all ages. Kids are here too so it's just the overall fun party. we enjoyed our time here but word to the wise, if you came for the ziplining stick with the 1 hour admission. More time does not mean more time on the zipline (or at least it didn't for us). Our group did the base camp package. Our 4 hrs consisted of 2 hours of team building games, which seemed too long, then lunch for 45 min, then 15 min getting suited up, walking to the zipline and instructions. They did make sure everyone got to go on the zipline and swing, 1 turn each. The kids were eager for the ziplines and doing these last meant a long wait. We were a group so maybe it works differently if you are not, but definitely check because if you get the 4 hour package thinking you will get more zipline time, you will be disappointed. Also, note that packages cost more on weekends (including Fridays). read more

I had a blast today with the Single Mix Ministry from Bridgeway Church. Everyone was encouraging,clapping and cheering me on. It was quite the rush. I've always been afraid of heights but today I leaped off that platform. Zipping through the air was exciting. My heart was pounding as I ascended to the platform. WONDERFUL experience!!! Far exceeded our expectations. Got more than our money's worth with the 4-hour Terrapin Challenge (zip line, ropes challenge, giant swing, and climbing tower). With this, you have unlimited access to all 4 courses. The guides were freakin awesome---friendly, energized, enthusiastic, and constantly reassuring to our questions and nerves. Everything ran smoothly with very little waiting (the earlier in the day, the better). We will definitely be back for the Terrapin Challenge and the other excursions (tubing, kayaking, team building exercises). Some tips: --wear a ball cap under your helmet for sun protection (all the guides do!) --if you bring someone to help take pictures AND isn't doing the challenges, they ALSO have to wear closed-toe shoes in order to go in certain parts of the course --bring working gloves to help grip the cables and rope --complementary water jugs are available --there is a place behind the desk to hold essentials (keys, phones, wallets, etc) read more

The website makes Terrapin Adventures (TA) seem more "fun" than it really is. In reality, it's a lot of pain and hard work. Let me explain why. 13 ways up a 43-feet climbing tower? That sounds fun. It even looks easy from the pictures. But when you actually stand at the bottom of this wooden behemoth, you start asking your TA guide, "You want me to climb up WHAT?" It's even deceiving when you first arrive because the walkway ramp puts you at eye level with only half the tower. The easiest way up is going up the rope net all the way. But if you wanted more of a challenge, you could try getting up through a free-hanging ladder, a free-hanging log, or even free-hanging tires. Some people don't make it past the first tier (let alone the first few steps). Some people (like myself) won't come down once you're at the top. I suppose its all in good fun, but my arms were sore (should have listened to the TA guides by pushing with my legs instead of clutching to life with my hands). There are two ways down this monstrous contraption. You could climb down through a rope net but the "easier" way is to wiggle through the Purple Snake (a.k.a. Birthing Canal, a.k.a. Small Intestine). What makes the Purple Snake interesting is that you go head first down this Chinese Finger Trap-like netting. Or just imagine traveling through a the stomach of a python. We were already exhausted when our TA guide informed us that we still had 20 minutes left. The Giant Swing is definitely an interesting contraption. This was the easy part since all the lifting was done by machine. They raise you 40 feet off the group with 2 other people strapped into this giant swing. The hard part comes when somebody has to release the rope that keeps you tethered in the middle of the air. Then it's a vertical drop before rushing forward. Better the one-way zip line? Most probably. $10 per person per ride? Somewhat expensive in my opinion. Overall, I enjoyed my experience with Terrapin Adventures. But to get your money's worth, you need to come prepared. I recommend 3 weeks of vigorous strength training and cardio work-outs. No sense in quitting half-way through. Who knew this was in my own backyard. Ok it wasn't that close but it was worth the 30 minute drive. This is a nice place to go with your friends or family and run some obstacles. It's affordable. The staff is friendly and there are many packages to chose from. Let me warn you about that Swing. It's not a joke. I laughed and cried at the same time. Not sure that was even possible but I have proof. Adrenalin packed! The zip line was fun also. The hardest part was jumping off the tree stand (if you are afraid of heights) Go. Ripoff! I went there for a party, and there was a copperhead snake on the course. We didn't get to finish the course because of the snake, so instead they blind folded us and had us hit each other with foam noodles. We can do that at home. They didn't offer us a refund but we didn't want that anyway. They should have offered us a different course to make up for the $30 we paid per person. The zipline is only ten feet off the ground. This place is lame. Don't waste your money. read more

A large group of friends and I came here for the Beer and Fear Terrapin Adventure and we had a fabulous time. The weather had threatened to be stormy that day but it ended up being great. Our instructor was awesome and managed to remember everybody's name, a feat I find very impressive. We started with the swings which went from thrilling to kind of relaxing, as relaxing as swinging with two other people can be. We then moved on to the ropes course and I had my moments of "Holy Crap!" but we all made it through (some of us a little more elegantly than others) and shimmied our way down and on to the zipline. While not the longest or the highest zipline I have been on (hey... they are limited on space), it was fun for a quick zip. We also had the chance to try out the rock wall and I succeeded in making it all the way to top despite every muscle in my upper body resisting the climb. We followed our mini adventure with a much needed break at Ram's Head for a beer sampler and some grub. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon! read more

My daughters and I got there before 3 and were told that everything was booked for the day. I didn't know this was a type of place that booked up if you don't make a reservation ahead of time. I mistakingly thought it was a place you could go and just wait in line for each activity purchased. I know for the future and will try again another day. I will give it four stars for now. We went here for a "family bonding experience" so I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was actually so much fun! The only reason it's only 3 stars is the price - in my opinion, it's very expensive. We used a $25 for $50 coupon from one of the deal websites to make it a little cheaper, but it was still about $40 per person. Here's what we did: --Terrapin Tower: Much more than just a rock climbing wall, Terrapin Tower is HARD. I, however, loved it. I'm scared of heights so parts of it definitely terrified me, but it was actually a great workout and I loved the challenge involved. We had 2 hours on the tower, but because my boyfriend and I were the only people in our group under 50, we didn't make it that long. I wish we had though - I'd love to go back and try out different parts of the tower. There are 4 sides and each side has multiple challenges, so it can definitely entertain you for 2 hours, if not longer. Once you get to the top, there's also an AWESOME contraption to get down to the ground - it's basically a chinese finger trap. It's terrifying at first to jump into this tunnel that appears to lead straight to the ground, but once I got over my fear, I was so happy I did it. Very creative and a lot of fun! The staff helps you out with everything and makes sure you know what you're doing and that you always have an out if you want it - thanks V for helping our group! --Giant Swing: Another scary one, the giant swing involves three people sitting next to each other. They hook you in and then slowly crank you up to the top of the hill. Then one brave person on the swing (my boyfriend in our case) pulls a string and you fly down at a pretty high speed. This was probably my favorite part of the day - it's like a ride at an amusement park. It's also really fun to watch other people do it - my aunt didn't stop screaming the whole time :) (NOTE: There's also a breeze while on it, which is very nice on hot, humid days!) --Zip Line: The zip line is fun, but honestly was my least favorite part of the day. Having done ziplining in Belize, where the experience is enhanced by the amazing views, the one zip line ride at Terrapin Adventures couldn't really compare. It was a lot of fun and the staff member here was awesome as well - thanks Billy W! - but the ride is over pretty fast and is probably best for someone that has never ziplined before and just wants to try it. All in all, we were at Terrapin Adventures for about 2 hours on Sunday, but we had a great time. The staff were all incredibly friendly and helpful. They all seemed experienced, and they didn't laugh at anyone that was inexperienced or scared! I'd love to take friends there, but it'd help if the prices were cheaper! read more

I decided to go ziplining for the first time during a recent trip back east. I found Terrapin Adventures via a Google search and we checked it out. Please note that this review is for the ziplining and giant swing ONLY. We didn't check out any of the other adventures. The giant swing was fun. It's scary enough for provide a trill but tame enough that even a scaredy cat could enjoy it. The ziplining is great for a first timer like myself. It's high but not too high. For someone who wants something more "adventureous" then they might not be too happy with it. Our guides were amazing and really fun. One of them was Alec but I can't reall the other guy's name. I'd say they definately helped to make the expereince all the more positive. The only complaint I have is that the prices are a bit limiting. It would be better if you could purchase the events in bundles as opposed to flat rate fees for each individual activity. Paying $15 for the first zipline and then $10 for each additional is crazy. Why not sell a bundle, say five, of ziplines for $40? Or allow the adventures to be mixed and matched for maximum enjoyment? I think that would definately go a long way. We went on a Thursday afternoon and there were only 3 other people enjoying the activities. Perhaps if the cost was more beneficial to customers they could drive up business. Overall, I am happy with the expereince and would recommend it to anyone. read more
