My daughter recently attended a summer camp run by the Tiny Chefs crew at a local rec center and had a blast! Each day she came home with a giant smile and an assortment of treats that ranged from savory (chicken pot pie, cheddar chive biscuits, jalapeno popper lollipops) to sweet (whoopie pies, so many different flavors of cupcakes, ginger snaps, elephant ears, and more). This was my first experience with a Fairfax County Rec Camp and I was pleased with how well run it was despite the limitations of being held in a community room setting. I asked my daughter how they were able to separate the classroom for each recipe and she mentioned it was very organized and every day she got to try out new skills like chopping (her only complaint -- she wishes they had real knives instead of the safety ones), whisking, measuring, and even washing dishes (she would NEVER at home). The staff while young, was friendly and upbeat and remembered my daughter's name by the second day. They paid attention to allergies, and even pulled me aside to let me know how well she was doing in the class since they knew she gets nervous in new spaces. Purely giving a review for the virtual classes. My stepdaughter has an annual subscription. I wasn't involved with the purchase, but I have been the only person supervising her classes for the last month. First off: The kiddo LOVES the classes. She is learning a ton about cooking. She's feeling more confident in the kitchen. These classes are great at teaching basic skills. She has an annual pass, so I look forward to her skills growing as she does more of the classes. My big concern is that recipes are really hit or miss. I'd say about half of them we end up tossing after we try it (chicken pot pie, baked blondies). Other recipes, we adore and will be part of our household rotation going forward (chicken gyros, blueberry buckle). We skip the ones we know we won't like, so it's a bummer when we try something and it ends up being ... unpalatable after meticulously following every step. (I think this could easily be solved by sending out anonymous surveys after each class to review the recipe.) If your little one is under 10, I recommend doing any of the prepwork you can ahead of time. My step kiddo loves cooking and can make breakfast by herself, but she still needs the prework done to stay on track for class. The asynchronous classes are great -- Little ones have all the time in the world to complete the tasks, and they need a lot less help than the live classes. I find I often end up prepping for 60 minutes for live classes and then have to be available for the whole class. Asynchronous classes start whenever you'd like, and the kid can pause the video whenever they need or want more time. Tiny Chefs sends out the ingredient list 4-5 days ahead of time. We tend to do grocery shopping once a week/once every two weeks (per COVID-19 recommendations in our area), so we often have to do a specialty run since they often use at least one atypical ingredient we don't have in our well-stocked pantry. read more

I would give this place zero stars if possible. We attended a program and a camp here, both times had a subpar experience. The cooking "classes" are more like let's make a shake and bake pork chop and let you sit and watch. They do not teach or nurture a child's skills. They have unfair & deceiving policies and they hire unexperienced teenagers to run their camps. Tiny Chefs would be more aptly named Big Scammers. They do not take pride in how they run their business. There is little oversight in their programs and they do not follow up. Don't waste your time or money. read more

My 3 year old daughter likes pizza and chocolate pudding so I signed us for up for the Tiny Chefs "Pizza & Dirt with Dad" event at Mamma Lucia's in Bethesda. The online ad looked good and even included a video of kids making & baking personal size pizzas at their events. So I paid the $60 event fee and went to Mamma Lucia's on Father's Day. We quickly learned that the 'pizza' was actually a small, cold, flour tortilla with raw toppings; that's right, unbaked 'pizza' at an Italian Pizza restaurant. While sitting at the table in disbelief with other parents, I double checked the Tiny Chefs website on my cell phone. After scrolling thru the ad again, the word "pizza" appeared 7 times and at the very bottom of the ad in small print it did say "Pizza, Pizza Roll Up" however there was no mention of an 'unbaked' pizza product. My daughter took two bites and threw it away. I mentioned our dissatisfaction to the instructor at the event and she said that 'she just works there but she would tell management.' Not confident that would happen, I sent an email to Tiny Chefs management, not something I wanted to do on Father's Day. Needless to say, after receiving six patronizing emails from them, I was informed that they decided to offer an 'unbaked' pizza product for safety reasons but chose not to disclose that in their ads; that is misleading! So I googled images of 'Pizza Roll Ups' and all of the pictures show baked pizza roll ups. But management dismissed that and felt that $60 was reasonable for a cold, flour tortilla with raw toppings. Really??? So to appease me, I was offered a coupon good towards a future purchase of another Tiny Chefs event worth $30. And risk putting myself through another experience like this with misleading advertising, overpriced 'pizza' (or similar food product) and receive yet more dismissive communications from their corporate office? No thank you. So parents, Buyer Beware of Tiny Chefs. Read the fine print & ask questions before purchasing because they don't offer a customer satisfaction guarantee; and once they have your credit card number, your money is gone. Avoid the disappointment, misleading advertising, overpriced food, unscrupulous business practices and aggravation in dealing with a condescending management team. I just discovered that Wegmans offers a kids cooking class for $10 where you get a large, hot pizza - imagine that! Caveat Emptor! read more

I cannot say enough positive things about Tiny Chefs. My son came home so enthusiastic about cooking. He insisted on making an entire meal including dessert for the entire family. The employees couldn't have been more friendly and were so helpful to the children in addition, it was very well run. We will definitely sign up for another class!!! read more
