This place has such an interesting concept that I had never quite seen before. We were so enticed by the myriad of artful activities, that my girlfriend signed up for a weekend class. Today was her first day and it's for the creation of stained glass art. They had other classes available for every day of the week like krochey, ceramic art, and of course painting. Today there were roughly twenty atudents, and they were of all ages. I know that the Lego store has classes sokely for building lego creations, but this art studio definitely offers so much more. It really does seem like a lot of fun, and even more the classes provide a lot in tye way of self development. If I ever find the time, I would even consider taking an art class myself.

First off, if you do the Stain Glass class, get Richard as your teacher. He is funny, and really makes sure you understand what you are supposed to do!!!! The concept was to make a stained glass window. 1. The process is very well explained. 2. the parts are each to gather. 3. overall the process was time-consuming but fun! Let me say again, Richard and his wife were amazing as teachers! This is my first time doing this (my co-creator has done this before, ergo her two stained glass, and my one). But it was more than two years ago that she did her first one. I did leave the taped numbers on mine on purpose.

My mom and I came here for a special "Coffee and Canvas" session during the government shutdown. Visart so kindly hosted a hugely discounted event for furloughed government workers and provided coffee! The session was a 3 hour painting session and Visart provided the canvas, brushes and paints and aprons: everything we needed! It was an unguided class so we could go at our own pace and ask questions when they came up. The staff was also super helpful and willing to help us take group pictures! Overall, an amazing experience and we hope to be back soon!

I didn't really know what to expect when walking into a class that requires any kind of artistic ability. I'm known to be very non artsy, but I was already pretty excited to try doing this. We arrived exactly at 7 and Ryan chit chatted with everyone until everyone arrived and we started roughly 10 minutes after the start time which was fine because of how personable he was. I went with a group of 6 people, which includes both my brothers and significant others. Initially, I was a little sad because I thought we were doing the wheel class, but I feel like the Mud + Merlot class greatly exceeded my expectations and I would gladly sign up for this same class again. The 3ish hours that we were there flew by and though my mug + shot glass kinda looked like shit (my fault not his), Ryan was incredibly positive and helpful with every single student in the class. My brother is also not very artistic, but Ryan helped him make a pretty cool looking octopus thing. Though the idea in itself was very fun, I can say that Ryan made an already fun event THAT much more fun. My group and I are planning on taking the Wheel clay class thing with him hopefully soon because of our experience with this class.

Come here for anything art related for classes, sessions or just for fun. We came for the starry night DC painting class. It was awesome and the experience was relaxing and fun. We didn't have any music going cause a cord was missing. First drink was included and the next one is for purchase. Super helpful and friendly staffs. They validate parking.

VisArt has been offering classes to furloughed employees so I figured what the heck and signed up. Upon arrive we were offer coffee and asked to choose a painting (there were about 20 to choose from) to create. Of course I pick the most challenging one. The instructor walked around and offered tips to class attendees. She was very nice and friendly. I had so much fun chatting with the other attendees and I think my piece came out quite nice. I plan to visit again in the near future!

A friend and I came for the stained glass ornaments class and I cannot recommend it enough! VisArts was easy to find and when we arrived our instructor Emily was in the hall and told us to follow her to our classroom. The hallway was full of other classrooms (painting and ceramics) and when we arrived to our room the basic materials and templates were already set up for us. It was just my friend and I in the class which felt like such a special personal lesson! We hung up our coats and watched Emily explain and demonstrate each step of the process. It was a 2-hour class, but since it was just the two of us we took a bit (okay, a LOT) of time choosing our glass. This ended up being the hardest part! So many colors, opacities, and textures to choose from! After longer than I want to admit in writing, we had our glass and got to work. Emily was such a great instructor--letting us try things on our own and stepping in whenever we needed some extra help. I'm thrilled with how my final piece turned out. I'm so pleased with my first experience here and am already looking for my next class to take!

Crowd levels were manageable when I arrived, with only a brief wait to check in, but it was noticeably busier when I left around 3:00 p.m., with about 10 people waiting in line. The experience includes both indoor and outdoor art, so be prepared for a fair amount of walking, including some uphill sections. Plan on spending 2-3 hours if you want to see everything. I also recommend booking tickets at least a couple of weeks in advance. When I visited, all remaining time slots for the day were sold out. Because of the extreme heat, part of the grounds was closed during my visit. The museum provided white umbrellas for sun protection, which I highly recommend, even if you have a hat and sunglasses and the stamina of a horse. Just note that umbrellas are not permitted inside the pavilions or gallery buildings. One thing that could be improved: I found only one water station, and it dispensed warm water. There are benches throughout the property, but much of the outdoor area is unshaded so on hot days you're unlikely to sit for long. The map provided at check-in was very helpful for navigating the grounds. AC is ample in all the buildings including the food venues. My favorite installations were Alex De Corte's exploration of humor, satire, violence, and tenderness through neon installations in The Pavilions and Faith Ringgold's "Who's Afraid of Aunt Jemima?" You'll have to check them out for yourself to see why!

More experienced photographers may disagree, but as a beginner, I found WSP's "Focus on…read moreComposition" course super helpful. The class tried to instill a habit of thinking through a checklist before taking a picture (or evaluating it afterwards). The checklist included, among other things: * What's the subject? * Do the direction and quality of light work for your subject? * Does the background distract from the subject? * Check the frame's edges: Is the cropping awkward? * Is there comfortable spacing between the elements of your photograph? Our class was small, so in addition to the lectures and the pithy, informative handouts, we could spend more time going over our homework, getting concrete suggestions for how to improve. For example, the instructor (Joe Yablonsky) would sometimes suggest moving the camera up, down, right, left, closer, or further, to get a cleaner background, a more flattering portrait angle, or more interesting "directionality" in the photo's lines. Other times, the instructor would notice patterns-- that my ISOs tended to be too high, or that there's dust on someone's sensor, or that the focusing was sometimes off. He'd then ask how we took the shot, and suggest new settings or focusing methods (or suggest cleaning the sensor!). Sometimes he'd ask the class to weigh in on the critique, so we could also benefit from our talented (and opinionated!) classmates. One session was a fun field trip to the National Mall. At the National Gallery of Art sculpture garden,we chased photogenic squirrels and captured tourists' hilarious reactions to Joan Miro's Personnage Gothique, Oiseau-Eclair. (Google it if you don't know it). I watched as one classmate got several amazing portraits of strangers, just by walking up and asking. The instructor also gave me a demonstration of how to get my camera to focus with a neutral density filter. (I had been having trouble with that). The course just ended last week, and I still need a lot of practice. But it's made my photos noticeably better. (One of my homework assignments even got published last week, as the page 2 photo in the Washington Post Express!) The downsides: Classes can be expensive! (Luckily I had a gift certificate). Sometimes you can find coupons or Living Social deals, e.g. here's one that's on right now (as of late March 2014): http://conta.cc/1jNpdud Washington School of Photography can be a pain to get to without a car.
