My husband and I took the Southern Brunch class at Baltimore Chef Shop Sunday and had such a great time. We made breakfast sausage, buttermilk biscuits, chicken fried steak, country cream gravy, crispy hash browns, sunny side up eggs, fruit salad, and Texas sheet cake and somehow it all came together into an incredibly delicious meal. Chef Ted was warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful throughout the class. At one point I was deep in ADHD overwhelm trying to keep up with the Texas sheet cake while everyone else seemed miles ahead, but Chef Ted and Madison (KA) stepped in, got me across the finish line and the cake turned out great!!!! The class was instructional and a little fast-paced in the best way. The two hours flew by!! It felt busy but never stressful, and sitting down to eat what we made together was the perfect payoff. Two thumbs (or forks?) way way up. Definitely recommend and would absolutely do another class!! We're already talking with friends about booking a private group night. read more

My crepe class with David was packed with fun! The structure of the crepe class was making a variety of crepe fillings, sweet and savory batters, cooking the crepes, and then eating everything you made as a group. Within the class there were about a dozen things to make. You are divided into 2 tables, with each table making everything. Personally, you make one or 2 things. I was assigned the savory crepe batter and the spinach filling. Then everyone took turns cooking a crepe or 2. In all the class was a blast! There were some minimal drawbacks. To start, I previously posted about them not honoring gift cards. I quickly removed that post and they corrected the problem. I am very satisfied with how that was handled after the fact, but the old gift card was not easy to use without working with the owner. I also had a few times in the class where I could not find items like spoons or ingredients easily. The class had a lead instructor and then a kitchen assistant. It took some getting used to and understanding how the place worked. I almost feel more prepared if I were to sign up for a class again. First hour was not the most intuitive. I recommend these cooking classes. It was fun and a good date morning with my husband. read more

Most options do repeat at some point so you won't necessarily totally miss out if a class fills up too quickly. Menus may change seasonally, but offerings include courses in different cuisines to make authentic recipes, fun street food menus, and you can even take a look at specialty foundational classes like "mastering the mother sauces." Additionally, The Chef Shop offers technical baking skill and cooking technique classes. Then there are a few multi class series like Regional French Cuisine, a 2 day croissant workshop, and a 6 part series on Baking Techniques. I can personally speak to the Jamaican Cuisine and Pasta Ripiena couples cooking classes. They were so incredibly fun! I learned some tips and feel well prepared to make some recipes at home. We had a wonderful time at Baltimore Chef Shop! We did the Southern Menu. They are very organized so among 6 people (3 couples), we were able to make SIX recipes in about 2 hours. The cheese grits, collards, and strawberry shortcake were my favorites. All ingredients are within arm's reach, and the measuring spoons and cups are too. The chef was entertaining and did several helpful cooking demos. Many of the other guests had been earlier and shared their tips. We ran into old friends and made some new friends, too. read more

We did this and it was fun. The 12-person class was split into two teams, and further split into the performance of individual tasks. Instruction was plentiful and personal, the equipment was clean, functional and utilitarian, with just enough hands-on involvement from the professional staff to keep us from going to awry. I'm not sure just what can be done about it, but the judgments made by classmates (how spicy, how finely chopped, care to avoid fish bones, etc.) do influence what you wind up eating. Still, at an event with much potential for things really to go wrong, much more went right. Parking was even less of a challenge than we feared, though maybe we got lucky. read more

We received a gift card a while back so we wanted to take the chance to check out the cooking classes. This was my first class here and Chef Sung and her team left an amazing impression!! The team worked beautifully together and Chef Sung was very knowledgeable and took the time to go over some house rules to make sure we were all safe and having fun. The class was divided into 2 teams of "6" and they give you a range of recipes that the table makes as a whole. The one big downside, which I can understand from a space perspective is that given the cost of the class, $165 per couple, that we would be able to make the dishes across each pair and have leftovers to take home versus shared across 6 individuals. I think $165 could cover the costs of the ingredients easily with plenty left over. The overall class was very organized and despite the challenges presented from some individuals, the team held it together well and handled each situation with care and ease while making sure we were not stressed out and kept having fun. Chef Sung also took some time as we arrived to introduce herself and made the class very personable. They offer a wide range of classes and covers a range of difficulty level. It is a great way to work as a team while learning some new cooking skills regardless of how good or bad you are at home. TIP (no pun intended): they collect tip at the end of the class, which I was not aware of so bring some cash! read more

What an amazing experience with the friendliest, most helpful chefs in a beautiful building! We were given a gift certificate and chose the French Provençal class. We are pretty skilled home cooks and were excited to try a new cuisine we've never explored. I can't believe how much I learned, Chef Dan was so knowledgeable and explained everything with the perfect amount of science to help us understand exactly what was happening as we cooked. I left the shop feeling confident in my cooking skills, which is a great feeling after three hours of teamwork to bring together an amazing meal. I took the 101 bread making class and it was terrific. I've made bread about 5 times before taking the class, have some of the basics down, and make a very good hearty loaf of bread from one recipe. I took the class to understand why dough did what it did, how to recognize good and ready dough vs. not so much, the differences of he various flours, what the "window pane" test was really about, and other such things that I question, have looked at You Tube videos about, but never trusted my acquired knowledge. This class answered it all. I also learned how to make sourdough and english muffins, which I wasn't necessarily pursuing at the outset, but now I'm glad I know. The instructor was knowledgable and approachable, and the class set up was conducive to learning and asking questions. read more

Baltimore Chef Shop was an amazing experience and I highly recommend!! My husband and I did a couples cooking session and made the Thai street food. It was a wonderful time and we had so much fun! The food was also SO amazing. I recommend going with a group of 6 friends for a really fun time otherwise be open to cooking & eating closely with strangers as it's a collaborative class. The head Chef (can't remember his name but an older gentleman) and kitchen assistant Sierra were both so friendly and made sure everyone was safe and having a great time. A few recommendations for improved experience: better AC (that kitchen gets HOT with many ovens, stove tops, and people), photos of what the recipe looks like finished (we had to Google lol), put the order of work on the wall closer to the prep tables (we couldn't always see it posted over the stovetop which made pacing our recipes a little challenging). We had a couples cook class here for a Moroccan feast, and it was a wonderful outing. They split up the class into two teams as it were, and there were about 5 recipes, and each table of couples decides which recipes they want to take on. Me and my boyfriend decided to work on the Ras el Hanout seasoning blend, the tomato and chickpea soup, and the vegetable couscous. The other couples on our table worked on a chicken tagine, a date and walnut cake, and glazed chermoula carrots. They lay out the ingredients, but you have to do your own mis en place and get cooking. At the end of the meal, you share your food with your table family style and take any leftovers home. The Moroccan food was delicious, and I would definitely love to take more classes in the future. The 4 stars are because it does not appear that they can accommodate any dietary restrictions on any particular collaborative cooking class course, and their website advices you to pick some other class. Which is kind of.. unfortunate. What if I wanted to learn their Schezuan course, but they can not accommodate the no pork dietary restriction I have. It definitely limits the offerings for people who have allergies or restrictions. If a simple protein sub can be made, I'd give the feedback they should allow for it. read more

TLDR: Well organized, top notch instructors and delicious recipes! Perfect for date night. We had a great experience at Baltimore Chef Shop for their couples cooking class! Located in the heart of Hampden, the Chef Shop has 2 buildings on the same block that can host up to 3 separate classes a night. All of the class bookings are done online via their website, which is nicely laid out by the type of class and cuisine. It is highly recommended to look at their calendar several weeks out from your desired class date, as classes fill up quickly. For our couples cooking class, we opted to do the Sichuan class, which had us cooking 6 dishes in total. The class was broken up into 2 groups of 3 couples, then each couple was responsible to cook 2 of the 6 dishes. With the class lasting about 3 hours, this was the perfect amount of time for us to receive instruction, cook and then sit down to eat. The prep kitchen prep work and instruction was top notch throughout the entire class. Our chef and kitchen helper were great at guiding us through various techniques and tips as we cooked our way through the evening. The kitchen helper was very diligent in clearing used bowls and utensils out of our work space which was extremely convenient. In the end, all 6 of our dishes turned out great and we had more than enough food for our group to enjoy. Overall, I highly recommend the Baltimore Chef Shop for anyone looking for a unique foodie experience. We have done two classes here and we've had a great experience each time! The classes are a little different than we've done at other schools because you don't necessarily cook each item. Instead, your table or the whole class splits up the recipes and you focus on a subset of the recipes. At the end, all the food gets combined and everybody splits all of the food. There are pros and cons with this approach- on one hand, I feel like you learn a little bit less but it's also a bit more relaxing and social than trying to frantically cook everything as a single person or couple. We did one class on crepes and one on bread, and I'd definitely recommend both. The chefs were knowledgeable and helpful, and always took time to answer our questions. And all of the food has been delicious. I definitely recommend if you're looking for cooking classes in the area! read more

We stopped by for a French Provencial Couples Cook night and had a blast learning to make new dishes like the pros. We came away with the most delicious onion tart recipe and a better understanding of our skills in the kitchen. There were 12 or 14 people in one class, which meant there were some points where you had to wait for help or seek out the chef. I would be really interested in going back for a skills class (especially knife skills) because we learned some valuable lessons from just that one meal. For me, learning those little tips and tricks dispersed throughout the class was the most valuable part. We did a virtual cooking class for Valentine's Day and it was so fun! The chef taught us a few new techniques and walked us through all of the steps to cook the delicious meal. At one point he moved pretty quickly but we were able to divide and conquer. Having 2 people participating was super helpful but had I participated by myself I would've fallen behind or missed things for sure. I wouldn't say we're experts in all things risotto and molten lava cake but the meal was very tasty and we enjoyed doing something different! We ended up signing off to eat dinner and then baked our dessert after to make sure it would be warm. I also highly recommend getting the ingredient kit from them, it made it so much easier! We participated in Couples Cook preparing Thai Street Food. The recipes were great. The participation was great. The instruction was great. And very importantly the food was great. All of the ingredients were fresh and most had some prep done before we showed up which was helpful to get through the 5 recipes. Chef Sung was very friendly, upbeat and knowledgeable. My partner and I just completed the six-part Baking Techniques class, and I can't say enough good things about it. First, the recipes were delicious and varied. Second, each week carefully built on the skills and techniques of the previous week. And finally, the class environment was informative, light, and fun. Chef Steph created such an open, friendly, and enjoyable vibe, and we loved working with her. She was knowledgeable without being inaccessible, and she encouraged all of us week after week. My only complaint about the entire experience is that the ovens did not work for two of our six classes, which meant shuttling everything to the other location. Even though the shop seems a bit tight, it actually has a great amount of room. There is a upstairs and downstairs area for all the "Chef in training" to utilized so it's not too crowded! The employees at the Chef shop do a great job making sure we have all we need on our table before we come and that was wonderful! They have every utensil and cookware you may need to make your meal come to life!! I didn't realize that making sushi would be so time consuming but I have to say it was such an amazing experience. As a group we made miso soup, salad, and had to cut up all the fillers for the sushi! We all took part in cutting the eel, salmon, tuna, shrimp and all the veggies to come up with the finishing product. It's such a great event to do to meet new people and learn a few new recipes!!
