Today was nothing short of amazing! The experience here was definitely one to remember. Today we experienced the Parent and Me Baking Class. I was able to learn and have an amazing time with new people in a relaxed yet exciting environment. My son was overjoyed and excited to return. The entire building was spectacularly clean and the staff was incredible from start to finish. Chef Aubrey was very knowledgeable, helpful, and all around fantastic. Julia was super helpful. She provided amazing service, advice, and motivation to the youth. The dishes came out magnificent thanks to the all around beautiful experience provided by an amazing team. I can't wait to return!!! read more

Wow! As an Elite Yelper, I had a great opportunity to attend one of the cooking classes organized by Yelp. Thanks to our Yelp manager Isaiah for putting this together and making our experience memorable. My fellow Elites and I had a great time learning to "prepare" Sushi (the chef mentioned that you don't use the word "cooking" with Sushi :P) with Chef Tezz and her amazing crew. They were very patient with us in every step of the process. The dishes are placed so that it's easily accessible to everyone. Chef Tezz gave us thorough instructions on how to use the special Sushi knife, different cuts, how to roll and everything else. After our basic instruction session, it was time for us display our culinary skills :). With the help of the Chef and her team, we learned to prepare some amazing Sushi. For most of us, it was our first time making Sushi. I was extremely pleased with what we learned during the class and can't wait to try this at home. I would definitely recommend their classes to all those aspiring to learn different cuisines. I know, most of us either watch YouTube videos or read cookbooks to learn but taking their class is worth every penny you spend. You can check their websites and register for classes. read more

Baltimore Chef Shop is a cooking school located on the Avenue in the heart of Hampden. I've taken two classes here since moving to Hampden in June: a fermentation class and a French baking class! Both were really fun experiences. In both classes I've tried, each table produces the same recipes, but small groups at the tables work on individual recipes (there's not enough time for everyone to work on everything). You still get to be hands-on with a lot of several recipes and get instructions on all the recipes. You also get to meet other people at your table, which has been fun! The instructors of my classes have been great - very personable and willing to answer lots of questions. And each of my classes has ended with a tasting - either what we just made or examples of finished products of what we made (in my fermentation class, we couldn't eat that since it had just started the fermentation process, but we tried examples the instructor had made weeks before)! The experiences I've had have been great. I'm looking forward to taking many more classes at this great cooking school! read more

Second time we have come to Baltimore Chef Shop and this time was even better. First we took a cooking class then we did Creole Cooking. Our instructor Pat was so much fun and really knew a lot about cooking and the food. The end of the night was the best part where we ate everything we made. Delicious! My husband and I can't wait to try another class. read more

I had originally booked the Louisiana Cajun Cooking Class for my family of 8 last April, but unfortunately COVID derailed our plans. Luckily, with a lot of help from co-owner Gwynne and Kourtney we were able to reschedule for this past weekend. It was worth the wait! Chef Jeff was funny, informative, patient and willing to answer all our questions (and we had lots!) Kourtney was a wonderful extra-set of hands and willing to help us in any way needed. Jasmine was the silent hero - washing all our dirty dishes so we could focus solely on the fun of cooking. Our entire group had a BLAST - we learned so much and had tons of fun while doing so. Our meal was delicious - every single menu item was fantastic. There was more than enough food for seconds and thirds! Since the class was a public class we had the pleasure of meeting and cooking with some new friends which only added to the fun! I highly recommend the Baltimore Chef Shop! My family is already talking about our next class and cooking adventure! read more

I enjoyed a class from this establishment. This is the first cooking class outside of high school that I have ever attended. We had an experienced chef that gave us great pointers. I was with a group of young men, most of who weren't very hands on with food prep. Luckily, Chef Dave made sure that we wouldn't fail by supervising us in making our shrimp gumbo meal and making sure that we would complete the recipe so that we would have at least 30 minutes to enjoy our meal. He was very patient with us and never made any negative remarks. The shop runs the class with a team of three which consisted of a chef, kitchen helper, and dishwasher. It was also an eye opening experience to see what can potentially happen in a kitchen in a busy restaurant. On a Friday afternoon, it was easy to find street parking. read more

What a cool experience!! I gifted a Make your Own Sushi Night to my boyfriend for Christmas and ended up loving it!! We can't wait to take more classes here. We made miso soup, iceberg salad with ginger carrot dressing as well as a ton of sushi! There were about six couples which was perfect. They supplied all ingredients (a little short on the tuna and eel but had plenty of crab and veggies), it was BYOB and it was a very comfortable atmosphere! Everything was super fresh and we got a ton of tips for making it on our own! read more

I took the Dim Sum Dumplings in-person class on 11/22/20, and it was great. First, the shop has done a very nice job of presenting a clean/safe/distanced setting during these times of covid-19. Chef Nate led the class in making dim sum wrappers (truly an art!) as well as two different fillings - one for veggie dumplings, the other for pork shu mai. We learned different crimping techniques for sealing the dumplings, then steamed them in bamboo steamers. Afterwards, we sat down to eat our creations. Many thanks to Chef Nate, who was there to guide and assist; Christine, who ran equipment and tools to the students as needed (and provided some great crimping tips from her own mother); and Eric, the unsung hero of the shop, who has the monumental task of keeping the dishes washed. I highly recommend Baltimore Chef Shop. In addition to in-person classes, they also offer virtual classes. read more

We did the virtual sushi class last night and loved it! I was nervous about the set up of a zoom class but they executed everything perfectly. Our food turned out great and we learned some great techniques from Chef Jeff for sushi making and for our daily cooking. I attended the Moroccan Cuisine class in December 2024 and was disappointed with the experience. The employees and chef instructor were disorganized from the moment we walked in. We were missing recipe printouts and ingredients and had to ask on multiple occasions for either an ingredient altogether or additional quantities of ingredients. As a menu-based class, I was only able to work on 2 of the recipes on the menu. The class included no cooking demonstrations or much instruction. We were handed a stack of recipes and told to figure out how to divide the work amongst our table mates. The most disappointing part of the class came when I asked the chef instructor a question about a type of pan used in Moroccan cuisine. She told me the pan had no practical significance and was simply tradition. A quick Google search gave me a very different answer. My hope in signing up for this class was to learn from knowledgable chefs about a cuisine I have never cooked before. Instead, I was met with a lack of preparation on multiple fronts. read more

We went for the Spanish Tapas class $138.00 per couple. First of all it hardly resemble real Spanish Tapas ( beleave me- I was in Spain several times ). Second it was very cheap and questionable quality. All recepies were very basic with primarily cheap vegetable ingredients. For the protein was only prochuto wrapped asparagus and cheap mussles for the seafood. We got to prepare stuffed mini peppers and the only tomato that goes there was bruised and spoiled. I asked chef to replace the tomato but she told me that this the only tomato they have and suggested to cut off the spoiled part which was 1/4 of tomato. As the class is concerned there was no class - just the printed recipes and ingredients. No useful instructions from the chef. The value of this event was hardly worth half of what this charges for it. read more

I have taken six classes here so far, and they have all been amazing! I highly recommend the knives101 class first, as it will make all future classes you take more efficient and makes for great practice! Every time I take a class here, I learn a ton of new things, eat an amazing meal, meet cool folks, and in general have an amazing day. By far my favorite activity in Baltimore, you should absolutely sign up today! My next class will be classic French desserts in March, and I am beyond excited. I'll add that the staff and customer service are impeccable and compassionate past expectations. If you want to impress your friends, family, or romcom love interest, take a class here and blow their mind in the kitchen. See you there! read more

On the bread baking class: Here's the first don't - don't start the class with announcing "I've never taught this class before". Here's the 2nd don't - don't read the recipes for the 1st time after announcing "I've never taught this class before" It was just so disorganized. By the time I left - only one bread of three was completed. (It was both undercooked & over browned...a very unattractive bread) I'm sure the instructor is very talented baker = shout out for the class assistant, she didn't stop moving the whole time. It could have been the set up or the number of students but I know as much as I did after the class as I did before. I'd been here once before - pasta making - that time. That class was at least organized - they had dough ready at different stages so we "saw" what the stages were. It had very little hands on, and very little food to eat (other classmates took the majority) Can't say I'll be back. read more

**Couples Cook: Traditional Greek Cuisine class  ** My wife and I had an absolute blast cooking with Chef Stephanie.  She taught us all sorts of new cooking techniques and best practices, while we prepared an incredibly delicious spread of Traditional Greek dishes.  It was truly enjoyable, and we will most definitely be back for another class.   We highly recommend Baltimore Chef Shop and certainly Stephanie's Greek class. .......... This was my third time going. I also recommend the Indian Cuisine class - that was fantastic too. We used so many spices and learned a lot! Also, the Spanish Tapas class - I have a new appreciation for the details that go into tapas. read more

The chef was organized and very personable. I learned some new cooking techniques and the final product was very tasty.

I came here for a Indian cooking class with a certain perception in mind. This review is to help you prepare yourself before you come for a class. When you come for a certain ethnic food type (non-skills) class, there is a low likelihood you will learn cooking techniques. For the Indian cooking class, we made palak paneer, chicken tikka masala, naan, mint chutney. This was a self study class. You are handed papers with recipe directions, ingredients and spices to assist you, and assistants and the head chef around if you need help. Our head chef was helpful, but I hoped for more direction and teaching from the technique standpoint. With how popular and expensive as these classes are, it seems less fulfilling (unless you are there with a lot of friends drinking - and thereby ruining the rest of your table's food). It was nice to learn the two techniques of cooking naan on the grill and making fresh paneer. But this is not a class for a person who doesn't know anything about cooking. Be prepared and be aware. This is less teaching, more self study. read more

Attended date night session to learn how to make Spanish tapas. BYO Wine which made everything seem more fun. We were each assigned a dish and got a chance to learn the skills to do them well. Mussels were the star of the show. Lots of food and good company. The chef was a blast and so funny and was able to give constructive feedback without making us feel like we were novices (which most of us were). Good to learn some knife skills too. Waited over a year in order to take my son to a class here after he told me at age 6 that he wanted to go to a cooking class with me. Luckily, he was still willing to go almost 18 months later. It was worth the wait. It's a very stylish place, reasonable class size, and highly organized teaching team. Classes seem to fill up quickly. We wanted to start with the doughnut class, but had to go with the multi-colored pasta. It actually turned out to be just right for my 8-year-old son. I never had to strain any muscles on the pasta machine. He took care of the crank entirely ;) It's like playing with play dough, and the hard part of preparing the dough was done for us, and we got to focus on the creative design by applying color and texture and learning shaping techniques. Then we ate - Fun! #baltimorechefshop read more

I attended the Spanish Tapas cooking class this past weekend and it was amazing! I had a hard time finding quality and well rated cooking classes in DC so I ventured out to Baltimore and was so impressed. This night our chef was Chef Pat who is apparently newer to the shop but I honestly felt like he's been teaching for forever. He made the class very interactive and gave so many useful at home tips. I would highly recommend taking the couples class for a unique date night. Also, the night we were there a top chef was teaching a new class upstairs. I'll definitely be back. read more

The Sunday virtual class on making Hearty Soups was a perfect way to spend a cold January afternoon. The pre-class prep list was easy to follow and I obtained all the ingredients before the class. I did not have to buy an additional equipment. There was the option to pick up the ingredients at their store but I am located in Philadelphia so that would not work for me. The class was scheduled for 3.5 hours and we used almost all of the time. There was ample opportunity to ask questions. There was a range of cooking experience in the group but I don't think that was a problem. Soups turned out great and I will definitely make them again. Highly recommend the class. read more

My boyfriend and I were gifted a class for Christmas and we waited over six months for in person classes to open up again. Boy was it absolutely worth it!! We chose Greek Comfort Food and our fabulous Chef Steph made the night so fun and memorable. She taught this Home Chef some new tricks! The ingredients were so fresh and smelled amazing, especially that chicken stock for our soup and the herbs that looked like they had been picked straight from the garden. The smell instantly made me feel like home. The three course recipes were easy to follow and I will definitely be making them again at home. To finish the night off we drank our bottle of wine that we brought and ate at a table outside with the other students which was a perfect way to end the evening. It was such a great date night activity that I highly recommend everyone to take a class here! Chef Steph, you were amazing, thank you so much! read more

I've been to Baltimore chef shop twice for classes and had wildly different experiences. The first time, for a yelp elite event, I had a wonderful time-the chef and kitchen staff were awesome, patient, funny, everything was well prepared and ran smoothly, it was just a super fun experience. Based on that, I convinced my girlfriends to head back over for our monthly get together. Unfortunately, the second experience was not nearly as positive. The chef was impatient, not very approachable, things were not prepped as well, the space was too crowded and necessary cookware was unavailable, in part because the kitchen staff constantly cleared stuff we were still using. They forgot two of our dishes when it came time to eat, which we only ended up getting because we remembered halfway through eating and asked. There were not as many helpful teaching techniques/demos as I experienced my first time going, which is much of the reason you go to a cooking class and the vibe was just not good, I felt like I was in the way! Like I said, I had an awesome time the first time and the drastic difference kind of makes me wonder if a lot more effort was put in for a class full of yelpers than would be for a normal class, if it was just an off night, or if it was just due to the different personalities of the staff working, as they were different than those staffing the first class I went to. I might give it another try down the road, but $65 is too much to spend to be more annoyed than anything else at the end of it. read more

I attended the vegetarian brunch class. It further confirmed that I should never become a chef--more often than not my food comes out at least slightly burnt. That said, it was a fun class and the staff was nice, helpful, and patient (even when you create mini stovetop fires from greasy potato scraps...which happened to both of the groups in our class... shoutout to Chef Joseph for helping us out). The class was also very informative--I walked away with several techniques I'll remember for the future. At the end, we got to eat all of the food (3 dishes and a dessert), which all turned out well! The only slight challenge was when they pulled you away from what you were doing to watch a demo. The other group in our class was a little ahead of us, so the demos often came a little before we were ready and while we were still completing some other task. That said, I completely understand the need for demos and don't know if there's really a way the class could be restructured so the demos were less disruptive. I would definitely go back for another class at Baltimore Chef Shop. read more

Had been wanting to try this place out for awhile now, so when a friend said she wanted to do her birthday event there I was game to go! The establishment is on the smaller side, soon as u walk in the door you walk into the kitchen. I would also recommend arriving on the earlier side only due to parking. Since I attended a private event the menu was a full meal. There was demonstrations throughout the entire prep and cooking process. We even where taught some basics like knife skills and how to chop and onion. By the end of all the work we had enough food to feed everybody and then some. It is BYOB so if you would like to enjoy a glass of wine with dinner make sure to bring a bottle. I look forward to attended another class and focusing in on specific culinary skills. read more

I was privileged enough to recently take a Vietnamese Street Food cooking class at the Baltimore Chef Shop. It took me some time to decide upon which class I was interested in largely because the offerings are so fantastic and so incredibly diverse. Ultimately, I settled upon the Vietnamese street food class because I had little to no experience with this particular cuisine. Thanks to Chef Scott, however, I felt like a master of Vietnamese food by the end of our three hour class (approximately two hours of which were dedicated to the preparation of our multi-course meal and one hour of which was dedicated to indulging in said meal with a group of new friends). This meal in particular consisted of pho with flank and brisket, shrimp spring rolls, Vietnamese crepes and a banana leaf wrapped with rice and pork. And I loved absolutely all of it. What I especially enjoyed about the class was the way in which Chef Scott enabled and empowered us in our experience. The Baltimore Chef Shop identifies itself as a teaching kitchen and that's exactly what it is. Chef Scott gave us full ownership of the meal by not only encouraging us to decide upon how we wanted to approach the recipes (whether we wanted to tackle each recipe as a team or in small groups) but also by allowing us to move through the various courses in a trial and error fashion. And that's very much an authentic cooking experience. In order to support us through the process, he intermittently offered up several mini cooking demonstrations teaching us how to devein shrimp, how to work with banana leaves and how to gently wrap our spring rolls. By the end of the meal, I had learned all the techniques I needed to know in order to recreate the meal at home. I couldn't have had a better experience at the Baltimore Chef Shop and I'm very much looking forward to going back. I continue to peruse the offerings in hopes of making a decision about which class I'll take next. But it's a hard decision to be sure. The shop offers something for everyone whether you're interested in taking a knife skills class or a kitchen techniques class, whether you're interested in Indian food or Thai food, whether you want to take the class on your own or with a partner, whether you're an adult or a teen. As for me, I've looked and looked and I think I'll be taking a sushi class next. Because who doesn't want to learn how to make their favorite food from home. read more

Great evening, killer venue, incredible teaching team... Elite crew invited for an evening of creation. Learning various kitchen skills, Chef Charlotte and Travis gave our gang hands on instruction to prepare pasta like a pro. From fettuccini to bow tie, we got our hands dirty and elbow deep in flour and eggs. Salad and marinara, bruschetta and broc rabe were all prepared from their house recipes and taught with enthusiasm and skill. I can't rave enough about their kitchen and their team. Truly a professional, well organized, superb kitchen and guest set up to learn and enjoy a great evening. We ate, laughed and learned together. Came here for a Yelp Elite Cooking Class event. The location, in Hampden, can be a bit of challenge in finding a parking space, but with my eagle eye I was able to find one just steps away!. Upon entering, l was greeted by a pleasant Yelp representative. I was also greeted by Chef Joseph and a few of the cooking class assistants. The space is a converted row home that has been fantastically converted into a multi-level cooking venue. The space was well thought out and provided the same comfort level as a cozy kitchen. Chef Scott was suppose to led one of the classes was a bit under the weather, so our class was taught by Chef Edwin Stolly, a Certified Master Chef who had an impressive stint at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. under a few Presidents. We worked in small groups and learned how to make pasta dough and stretch it out to form spaghetti, fettuccine and other fresh, hand formed pasta, we sautéed broccoli Rabe with garlic and olive oil, prepared a wonderful chopped Italian salad and garlic cheese bruchetta. The meal was wonderful! The venue is also BYOB and we did indulge in some lovely glasses of wine! All in all an excellent venue with a professional and inviting staff.
