I am a straight to the point person and I appreciated how straight to the point Mike was in selling me a mattress. Back issues have always ailed me but after purchasing a brand new stuffed with Texas cotton comfortable mattress I no longer have anything that ails me. I walked in and stopped in on a whim to see about purchasing a brand new queen mattress. I was stoked to walk in to a huge space with plenty of mattresses to look at and consider. I was greeted so kindly by Mike with a brief statement from him letting me know that he could help me out if I see anything I liked. I went here because of all the great reviews, but my experience was quite different. I was trying out a bunch of mattresses, trying to make up my mind which to buy, when one of the two guys in the store (the owner?) opened the back door, then said, "There's another homeless guy out there sleeping in the heat! Why doesn't the idiot find another shadier place to sleep?!" Then proceeded to make jokes and laugh at the homeless man, and make quite a few derisive comments about him. I asked if the man was okay, or did he need some medical help from the heat, hoping if I showed concern for the man, the store owner would listen to his buddy who had been trying to get him to knock it off. The guy just doubled down, saying something like, "No, he doesn't need help. What he needs is a job!" Then proceeded to rant about how he pays eight thousand dollars rent and doesn't need to run thirty dirty homeless people off a day because "they shit back there even!" Yeah, great professionalism there, dude, doing that in front of your customer. He just kept going on and on and on, ranting about "lazy homeless bums", so I walked out, saying, "I don't do business with heartless people." I went to Factory Mattress just around the corner and got a much better mattress for about the same price as a not-as-good one at the discount store, and without the disgusting display. And to the mattress guy himself: In case you thought I was just window shopping, I posted a photo of my receipt showing what I spent thirty minutes after leaving your store. And I'll be going back to Factory Mattress next month to spend even more for a full size bed that time, instead of a twin. I also have two vacation rentals that need new mattresses, so Factory Mattress will be getting even more money from me next year. read more

I moved to Austin and needed a new bed. I found out about Discount Mattress on Yelp and decided to give them a call. I spoke with Mike, the owner, who was very helpful and nice. I also asked him for recommendations on where to shop for a portable AC since I'm new to this area. Mike helped me transition here successfully, as he promised that once I came into his store late afternoon, he'd ensure to have my bed delivered that same night, even if he had to deliver it himself. True to his word, he delivered my bed himself and even assembled the frame for me. Also, his recommendation for the portable AC worked out as well. Moving is a very stressful event, especially a big move from CA to TX, but at least Mike made sure I had a nice, comfy bed to sleep in my first night here. Thanks, Mike! You're the best!! read more

I came the next day to pick up my new bed and Mike helped me load it and send me on my way. I would recommend this mattress shop for anyone who wants to feel comfortable shopping for a mattress. July 10, 2013 I recently embarked on a 3 day trip to move to Austin, Texas from Washington D.C. Having brought only what I could fit in my Volkswagen Jetta, upon my arrival in Austin I desperately needed to get the right equipment to help me snooze off the past 23 hours of driving. After consulting Yelp for local discount mattress retailers, I decided on Discount Mattress at 615 Slaughter Lane. The store is fairly small, presided over by Mike, the friendly owner. He asked me what I was looking for and what my budget was, and helpfully pointed me in the direction of a couple of mattresses that fit the bill. A dedicated comparison shopper, I narrowed it down to two possibilities, and then prostrated myself on both in my favorite sleeping positions repeatedly before I made my final selection. Mike was very tolerant of my lengthy decision-making process. Unwilling to sleep on anything smaller than a full-sized mattress, I asked Mike about my delivery options- again, my small, gas-saving car was not much help for the task. "You'd be better off renting a truck from Home Depot, brother," he told me, explaining it would cost $60.00 to have my mattress delivered. The rental from Home Depot was slightly cheaper, and after my big, expensive move, every penny counts! The owner answered, and told me to go ahead and come in, and he waited for me past closing time. LOCATION: First, I don't know why this would be hard to find. A) There is a map image on the website. Essentially the corner of Slaughter and S. 1st. B) I put the address into my crummy bult-in GPS that I have in my car (sometimes it can't even seem to find the state capital building or know what city I'm in... it really is a p.o.s.... totally another story). Anyway... my p.o.s. GPS was able to take me right to the store. Didn't even need to whip out the backup Google Maps on the phone or anything. It is in a strip mall, sure, but there is a sign on the strip mall sign directory. Not sure what else could be done besides sending out a bat signal. SHOPPING: It seems like I've been to every mattress/ furniture store in a a 40 mile area and can't seem to find what I want. What I want is a plain and simple firm mattress. Not a futon thingamabob. Not a pile o' feathers in a sack, but a nice, firm mattress without bells, whistles, mood lighting (I provide my own, thank-you) and made-up 'scientifically proven jargon that promises to re-align all the molecules in your body'. I can do without all the mumbo jumbo hoo ha. I just want a nice, firm mattress. If I want a fluffy thing on top - I'll go and buy a fluffy mattress pad. Yeesh. Is that so hard? Oh, and can I please not feel pressured? And can I please not pay so much money for a mattress that I feel guilty because I could be using that money to provide clean water to a small village for a year? I appreciate a quality mattress, and will gladly pay for it, but the mark-up scams really are rather irksome. DISCOUNT MATTRESS: + OPERATING HOURS: Not sure if it was there before, but it was there when I went - a sign on the door with Mike's cell phone number letting you know if he is out in the warehouse or not. I asked him about it, and he said that it is really just him running the show for the most part. My conclusion: I you are okay with a Ma and Pop, local type establishment, Mike is your guy. Yes, there is the off chance that you may need to call him on his phone and wait 5 minute b/c he's in the warehouse. But...keep in mind that the lack of overhead is why he's able to give you such a great price. (Did I mention how many stores I went to ? Trust me, it's a great price.) I needed two queen and a twin. Mike totally hooked me up. He listened to what I needed : "I need cheap and firm. Don't talk to me about whoosits and what's it. Show me whatya got." And... he didn't look at me like I was crazy for not wanting to give him as much money as possible. He, like, totally understood that I'm not eager to part with money unnecessarily . How novel. I picked out my mattresses, loaded 'em up and went on my happy way. PS - There is a wide variety of mattresses - yes, even the fluffy ones. I walked in and was directed to the corner where he only had one. He kept showing me memory foam mattresses with foam. I kept explaining we wanted gel foam only. He kept complaining how busy he was and had to make deliveries. I felt rushed. When I asked if he had a medium firm, he replied, "I do not do specs, all the info is right here." as he pointed to the signs on the mattress. i've never bought a mattress before, but i drove from new york to austin and found myself at my new place sleeping on the floor. so i figured now's as good a time as any. i have to agree with every other reviewer on here (except for the sad soul who couldn't find the place) -- Mike is GREAT. I was actually first assisted by Mike's friend (I think his name is Bob). Bob full admitted to my mom and me that he was just helping out and wasn't the mattress expert, but he did what he could. Once we made our decision, Mike came down from the warehouse and rang us up. My new full mattress with box spring was $250 plus tax. He said he'd deliver it the next day, which is he did.
