We searched high and low for a unique sectional for a long and narrow den that would both look good and be a great lounging sofa for movie nights. Nothing online or in our usual favorite strores (Room&Board, WestElm, Crate&Barrel) seemed to fit the bill. Wrong dimensions, ugly, uncomfortable, whatever... If only we could design this ourselves we thought.... lo and behold, you can, we did, and we couldnt be happier! It's something of a leap of faith to purchase a sofa built in California from a Texas company for our home in Chicago. But, we buy everything online now -- clothing, shoes, mattresses -- so we gave it a go. We started with one of models we found online as an inspiration and requested a quote for a million different alterations. A quote came back 24 hours later with a request to schedule a phone call to have a conversation with a real live person to make sure everyone was on the same page. We had 2 conversations over a couple of days, exchanged a few simple sketches over email, and it was the most satisfying customer service exchange I have had in a long time. Fast, efficient, with no sales pressure and all of my questions from small to major answered. About a dozen fabric samples were rushed to me, and our sofa was on it's way to being born. We were able to alter the length of both sides of an L to fit our room. We designed a unique wedge for a corner for maximum comfort and a fun shape. We went with bench style bottom pillows and metal legs for sleekness. We didn't want down fill or flame retardants and those requests were honored. Most importantly, we added 4 inches of seat depth to make it so comfortable and casual to lounge on, and to give our 65 lb dog plenty of room as well. It took 2 weeks for the sofa to be built by US workers in California. And another 2 weeks for it to get delivered to Chicago. We have had the sofa you built for us for about a week, and We love it. Super comfy, looks great, and the dog seems super happy to lounge on it as well...so really, making her happy is the most important thing. All along the way we had great service and the result was a perfect sectional. I really couldn't have gotten anything better unless I designed it myself. Oh wait, I did! We're about 4 or 5 years out on our sofa from Buildasofa and are still getting excellent customer service. Last year we ordered new arm covers and they look and match great. Today I just called and asked for a recommendation for cleaning and they are looking up the cleaning instructions for me. We bought a couch last year from Build a Sofa and I can't say enough good things about both the experience and post sale support. Bryce was great in walking us through the options and very patient in allowing us to hem and haw over materials (we took multiple large samples home). What I love about Build a Sofa is the variety of styles, the degree of customization, the high quality workmanship and the terrific support. We got our sofa ahead of the quoted time and it looked even better than we could have imagined. On the support: we ordered a couch with very long bench style cushions and when I mentioned to Bryce almost 8 months later that I thought there was a slight rumple on one of the pillows, he asked me to bring them in and added some additional dacron to make them like new, free of charge. We also had what we now refer to as the Sharpie incident when our 1 year old went ninja on a portion of the couch with a permanent marker. We were aghast but Brad and Bryce had great suggestions on how to remove the markings and if required gave us the option of ordering a pillow cover replacement at cost. We custom ordered this (expensive) sectional several years ago so I was waiting to post a review: First of all, substandard foam was used and the seat cushions have collapsed. The wood frame is creaking. The edges of all of the vertical cushions are very uneven and wavy (since new) I would have to agree with a previous poster that the quality seems on-par with IKEA purchases I've made in the past for a lot less money. read more

Awesome customer service, great selection (of course, you build your own!). I have been searching for a couch for eons.. (ok, a year) and found several options I liked here. I recommend (in this sequence): 1) Go to website (not very user-friendly, but gives you an idea of their degree of customization, which is not very apparent in the showroom) 2) Go to showrooom. Couches take 4-6 weeks (mine was an even 4) and are 100% made-in-the-u-s-of-a. I managed to hit a 20% off my whole purchase sale and definitely enjoyed the experience, despite my MUCH renowned indecisiveness. Custom-sized sectional couch, with upgraded fabric (2 levels) was around $3,000 with discount. I LOVE the couch and am hoping it holds up to the test of time. Great experience! read more

We needed a specific size sofa and chose BuildAsofa for a custom size. When it arrived, the leather on the sofa was obviously not the same as the sample. While the sample was soft, low sheen and textured, the sofa had what appeared to be a lesser grade leather that was minimally textured and slick. We are not ignorant of leather and have had 4 leather recliners and a leather sectional made for us over the years. We have gone through the leather selection process and chosen the higher grade leathers in the past. Bryce has been very nice and responsive, but after much communication has concluded that there is nothing he can do as the furniture is custom. Also, the "regular" seat cushion is very hard and we were promised a softer, replacement cushion which has never arrived. I dropped by BuildASofa a few times to consider all the choices. I wanted a down-free sectional in a custom size. Bryce was patient and explained the ordering process to me, then showed me lots of related pics of previous orders. Originally I wanted a sleeper sofa built in, which would have been a larger order for him, but he was honest and explained why that wasn't the best choice for me. Eventually I realized they had the same exact fabric as a Crate & Barrel sectional I was considering, but could get it done faster and to a better size through BuildASofa, so I placed my order. My order was delivered exactly five weeks later, which was the time they quoted me. After two months of use, I haven't had any problems yet, and my friends seem to like it. I've had a few crash on it already, and I've even slept on it once myself. Design wise, I'm pretty happy, too. All in all, probably a better experience than the other guys, but faster and at a better price. Next time I need a sofa, I'll be back. read more

There is no customer service after the purchase to fix anything wrong. This is really a shame because the craftsmen in the workshop do excellent work and were able to follow custom specifications very well. They were able to build unusually sized curved corner pieces for a sectional that no one else could. However, while they followed all the custom sizes, the advertised default sizes shown on the website cannot be trusted. In my case, the height of the back cushions was about 3" taller than listed on the website. It is one of the few measurements not specified on our order because I trusted that all measurements not customized for a specific model would be as listed online. I emailed about this day of delivery and was asked to wait a couple of weeks for things to settle. The second email two weeks later stating that settling has been at most one inch and its still 2-3" taller than advertised, was completely ignored. This should have been a relatively easy fix to redo the back cushion covers. I offered to send only the outer covers for easier shipping and I'll deal with removing some of the inner stuffing. Sad that they choose to have no post sale support and do not stand by the advertised measurements. read more

My wife and I had been searching for a new sofa on and off for around 2 years, and went to nearly every store in town. Nothing quite fit the style or design that was in our heads, but after just dropping in real quick at BuildASofa, one of their designs was almost perfect. After going back and forth between the Sterling sofa and a Gus sofa at Collectic, we finally decided on the Sterling at BuildASofa. When we did decide to go in and actually purchase it, Brad took our custom order and we finished within 10 minutes. We got the bench style seat and he made sure we got tie downs so it wouldn't move out from the back (a VERY nice feature to have). We received our sofa in just under 3 weeks, well ahead of the estimated delivery date--which is pretty amazing since they're made to order. The sofa is incredibly well built and super comfortable. Even after making an accidental wine spill and contacting BuildASofa by email, Brad helped us out again with the best course of action. Their post-purchase customer service is great, and more companies need to take note on making sure their customers are happy AFTER the purchase as well. Being empathetic, informative, and personal goes a long way. The name is a bit cheesy but it's exactly what it says it is. After many hours spent visiting different show rooms from the cheap to the ritzy and not feeling great about any of the options we saw for the prices (or the opposite, i think cheap furniture is a bad idea), we by accident drove by build a sofa's Austin show room and that piqued my interest. After some research we drove over there to check it out. The person that greeted us turned out to be the founder and owner, Brad, and he was very helpful and answered all of our questions. He was also great about not selling us anything, he was simply helpful and conversational. After some deliberation, we decided we wanted a sofa and had found a base "model" that we liked. We picked the fabric, customized a chaise lounge to go with it, customized the cushion slightly, and paid for it. The price was very reasonable and included shipping and taxes. They use alder wood in their furniture, which may not be a high-end hardwood (like maple) but is at least a hardwood instead of that heavy industrial compressed particle board some faceless corporate furniture companies like to use (it's heavy so it feels "solid"). Brad was honest that not everyone loves his furniture but he does his best for customer service and I have to say that is my favorite part about him and his business. I've been through the ringer with incompetent corporations and support departments that don't care or keep f'ing things up. I've also cofounded a couple of small startups and learned very early on that customer support is a feature, that a customer's problems and anger often evaporate if they can simply get in touch with someone who can and will fix their problem, sometimes, no matter how big it is. In this case I wanted to purchase furniture from someone I could physically see and call. Brad has lived up to his statement that he provides great customer service. I had a fairly common furniture problem: the sofa had been damaged enroute to me and the delivery guys only noticed when they delivered it. I declined to accept the sofa and I emailed Brad (this was Tuesday), he responded very quickly and was apologetic, after an exchange about whether i thought it was repairable or not and that I preferred to see it repaired than junked for something new, he said he was getting the sofa and taking it to get it professionally repaired. Today is Thursday and Brad hand-delivered the sofa in excellent condition like nothing had happened to it. That is easily not only some of the best customer service I've received from a company but the friendliest and most responsive business owner I've interacted with in a long time. Also, the sofa - the product - is great. Time is the true test of furniture but as it stands it's 100℅ what we ordered, it's comfortable, and sturdy. read more

I am beyond pleased with my new sectional! I initially had a hard time reconciling this purchase, without being able to see my sofa in person. But, I had specific design preferences, and lengths, that would have to be custom built. I'm in Atlanta, Georgia. They're in Austin, Texas. Scary!! Yet, they made the process easy, sent sketches and very detailed explanations, as we put together the plans for 'my sofa!' I love it!! I could not be more pleased. I waited a few months before posting my review. (Rec'd in Aug) Wanted to be sure it was comfortable for napping, kept it's shape, and really fit in my space as expected. A+ all around! I get so many compliments on this sofa, and the matching ottoman. Oh, on the ottoman, I adore how it flips from table to ottoman, depending on your needs. It's a perfect size, and fits in the corner to create a whole lounging area for movie nights. One note, I do wish I'd considered how having an asymmetric measurement would affect my ability to flip the cushions. I used to flip cushions every six months or so (on my old sofa) to help maintain their shape. This sofa is differing lengths, and thus can't be flipped. That's on me, though. First off, the store has excellent customer service. We had some problems with our sofa within the first month or two of purchasing and they were totally on top of it and resolved our issues. The furniture arrived on time per their given production timeline. The furniture design itself is great, I love how you can customize everything and they have different styles for different tastes. The reason I cannot give five stars is that we are a little over two years into owning our sofa and it is looking pretty worn. In the past I have purchased from big box retailers as well as had custom furniture made held up for 8+ years. Our sofa is pilled, the cushions are shifting and it is starting to look threadbare. We don't use our living room very often so the fact that it has not held up that great is disappointing considering we are only 2.5 years into owning it. read more

We had so many problems with this place. We purchased a faux leather sofa and chair. $2400. To be fair, customer service on the front end was great and we got it sooner than expected, in time for company. However, these pieces began to show wear within the first month. Yes, we have dogs. Yes, they are allowed on the furniture. We took the sample home to look at it further before purchasing and thought that that the material would be study and hold up well. This was not the case. The top layer of what we thought was a sturdy material began to peel off. Not punctured, as they would claim. Peeling. Then, within the first 90 days or so, the frame of the couch broke right smack in the middle. Turns out it was a knot hole in the wood of the frame. They had a subcontractor take it for repair. I wanted a new couch since it was still essentially new, but they would not do that. The repair was sloppy, as I predicted that it would be. They had to take it back and do it over. And, we have this crappy, peeling, way overpriced sofa and chair that look terrible. They offered to set us up with someone who would charge us to repair it, but why do that if it's just going to happen again?They would not replace it because they said it was caused by us. However, we have some other faux leather chairs that we purchased for less than $100 each down the street at Austin Furniture Depot, and have had for several years, and they are not wearing like this crap. When presented with that info, there wasn't really a great response. OH, and to top it all off, we can't flip the cushions, because there is this stupid fabric panel on the back. I was told that we could have requested not to have that. Why would you need to ask? Pretty sure that we talked about being able to flip the cushions with the sales person, as we also discussed having pets, but since it was not noted on the ticket and we didn't discover the useless panel until after we already had problems, we were out of luck. Please, save yourselves thousands of dollars and go on down the street on Burnet to Austin Furniture Depot before you purchase from this place. read more

Our new sectional sofa from Build-A-Sofa has been life(style) changing. Every time I walk in the family room I think, "Holy Crap, that's a nice couch". I don't regret a single dollar I traded them for it. We just moved into a new home and were replacing some old furniture with new. Our living room was completely empty while we got the house operational and considered how we wanted to use the space. During that time I totally underestimated the importance of having a place to sit. That should be on Maslow's list of basic human needs: Food, shelter, and a comfortable place to sit. So we put the living room on top priority. A quick survey of furniture stores in the Austin area revealed over 180 business selling home furnishings from the traditional to the eclectic modern, with prices between "Freshman Dorm" and "this fine fabric on our teak and duck down sofa would compliment your $12,000 toilet and bidet in the bathroom very nicely". My wallet said ouch. After visiting six furniture stores in our style and price range, I started to wonder how long this search was going to take. How many stores would we have to visit before we found the perfect sofa or sectional? Would we just have to settle for a mashup of Rooms-To-Go and Havertys labor day deals? When I first met Brad, founder of Build-A-Sofa, he said "send me a photo of your living room and I can design you a custom sectional in two visits or less". We brought our photos and decorating ideas, chose fabric, and selected the Sterling sofa for the foundation. The showroom contains most of the foundation designs and cushion styles so it was easy to decide on the sofa design we liked best. Brad and his wife are excellent decorators and quickly pared down the hundreds of fabrics they have on offer to a handful that matched our living room and were compatible with the sectional design. We placed an order, received it quickly, and absolutely love the couch. Color and texture are perfect. The quality of the seams and stitching are full, straight, and tight. The frame is well designed with plenty of reinforcement and support. There are no pops or creaks from our new Build-A-Sofa sectional. Several couches we tried at the volume furniture stores around Austin sounded like they were already 20 years old. The sectional sofa we ordered from Build-A-Sofa was super affordable. I was actually surprised I could get a custom sofa for the price I paid. Brad recommended a number of extras that didn't move the price much but really improved the comfort and utility of our sectional couch. Here's the value of this transaction for me: 1. I got the exact couch I wanted that matches my room perfectly with one visit to Build-a-Sofa. I didn't have to search through every furniture shop in Austin trying to find the size, style, and color that would "sort of work" in my living room. 2. I got a high-quality custom couch delivered to my home in about the same amount of time it takes a stocking furniture store to deliver from a warehouse. 3. I avoided the No. 1 complaint customers have with a furniture purchase: Delivery. My furniture was delivered and installed on time without damage by Big Easy's Moving. Seriously! Check out customer reviews for any of the traditional furniture stores in Austin. Customers usually have positive things to say about the sales person they worked with, the appearance of the showroom, and the quality of the furniture they hoped to receive. They buy the furniture and right after that the deal goes to hell. Either the store doesn't deliver on time, the delivery agent doesn't show up as promised, parts are missing, the order is damaged, some portion of the order never shows up... post-sale delivery is definitely not the strength of the regulars in town. So just a word about Big Easy's moving. They moved all my stuff into my new home without a scratch. It was like they were never there. And they have the best attitude and work ethic I have ever seen. Calling them a "moving company" or a "delivery company" just isn't right. I don't know what to call them but when I need furniture moved or delivered I call them. So when Brad told me that he only used Big Easy's for Austin delivery, I had no concerns at all ordering my new sectional from Build-A-Sofa. read more

So Brad just continues to reaffirm we made the right choices giving Buildasofa our business. We love our beautiful couch so much (6ish months old at this point) -- visually it still looks as good as the day we brought it home (perfect fabric doesn't show any marks at all, and still nice and perky and sharp looking!), not to mention being the most comfortable piece of furniture. Anyway, our couch lost a really unfortunate battle between one of the cushions and our yorkie when she got really sick one day. Called them up, Brad advised me how to rescue the cushion (take it to a dry cleaner) and he offered to restore the buttons/tufting on the cushion afterwards for free. And just this week we decided we wanted to get a matching ottoman and Brad walked us through the process and helped us order exactly what we wanted! I bought a sofa from Build a Sofa (Dallas Location). I had some issues with the cushions in the beginning and they resolved the issues right away. Three years later the fabric is tearing at the seams of the frame and the coach creaks when I sit on it. NOTE: I rarely use this sofa since my main sofa is in another room. The owner, Brad, told me he would not cover it. He said: I know you are not going to like this answer but it it not something we will cover. So we went in there because we were looking for a sofa and noticed it right across the street from Torchy's. It's not a big place but it's packed with a whole lot of sofas of various sizes and styles. I just can't believe it was this easy and this affordable! We found a sofa style that we liked and he told us that we could basically customize it in any way, from the height of the back, to the fabric. It took us about 20 minutes to decide on the options (fabric, cushion styles, attached ottoman and a loveseat). The sales person was helpful, friendly and didn't try and hard-sell us on anything. Great Experience. A month later our sofa arrived exactly as we wanted it, and all for a price that was reasonable considering it was totally custom. I purchased a lovely 2 piece chaise style sofa for my downtown Austin apartment from Build a Sofa and love it. We received our new couch. I still love the style of our Oliver sofa. This new fabric is beautiful. When I went in to re-order (remember my fabric saga), I told the sales-lady that our cushions were far too firm and didn't feel anything like the floor model's cushions. She assured me that my new sofa would feel just like the one in the showroom with medium density cushions. I have to say that our new sofa is was more uncomfortable than the first one. SUPER firm cushions that did not soften after a few weeks of use. We called Build a Sofa to report the problem. Absolutely, they took care of us by replacing the cushion inserts. We now have a beautiful AND comfey sofa. Absolutely, we will purchase furniture from them in the future--no questions about it! read more
