The atmosphere is kind of dive bar, but with really great food and cocktails. The tots, which are more of a croquette, are always amazing. We've also enjoyed the brussells sprouts. On our most recent visit we tried the nachos, and they were honestly the best nachos I've ever had. The cheese sauce is amazing- not some gross canned stuff. The chicken is perfectly seasoned, and the ingredients are layered throughout so you're not stuck with a bunch of plain chips. It feels silly to be gushing about nachos, but they are next level. Dirty Oscar's Annex - Disappointing Experience on 6th Ave We came in as a group of seven, and unfortunately the experience went downhill quickly. First, the service was poor and disorganized. One of my friends arrived early and ordered her drink, but it didn't arrive until after I had already received mine -- even after she asked twice. We also had to wait far too long for basic things like napkins and forks because we weren't given enough for everyone. The most frustrating part, however, was the automatic gratuity. At no point were we informed -- verbally or on the menu -- that parties of 6 or more are charged an automatic 20% gratuity. We only discovered it by carefully reviewing our checks. And to make matters worse, the so-called "20%" was not actually 20%. It came out to 24.1%. When we questioned it, the person who said she was the manager claimed "the computer does it automatically." We are a table full of teachers -- and the math was definitely not mathing. We understand and respect gratuity for large parties, especially when the service is great or when it's clearly communicated. But charging more than the stated percentage crosses from poor service into a billing integrity issue. To add to the frustration, there is also a credit card processing fee, which again was not clearly disclosed on the menu and only appeared at the bottom of the receipt. This absolutely should be visibly posted before ordering. They did offer to refund some of the charges, but we declined because it would have taken additional time and we had an event to get to -- and more importantly, it doesn't resolve the core issue of lack of transparency. She also gave each of us a $10 gift card, but again, that doesn't resolve the issue. And honestly, what good is a gift card if we don't plan on returning because of such an awful experience? Overall, this was a very disappointing visit, and not one we would recommend based on service and transparency alone. read more

I'm always skeptical about places that look like dive bars, but this place was better than I gave it credit for! It looks like a dive bar in there. Everything is black, super dark windows on one wall, very plain amenities. Not really my vibe, but the menu was interesting to me. I am gluten free and pescatarian and found MANY fun options, plus they were cool with substitutions and other things. They were even serving breakfast still at 2pm, which was awesome! Not sure if this was because we went the day after Christmas or if this is the usual here. I got the fried cheese balls- YUM! Usually these aren't gluten free so I was very happy that they were. It was like a mozzarella stick but way more flavorful and interesting. Not like anything I have had before. I got the shrimp and grits and they let me put the sausage on the side for my husband to enjoy since I don't eat meat. Loved this option, as usually I pay the same amount for a dish with no meat by taking it off. They also let me do my egg scrambled instead of poached. The shrimp was great, grits were perfect, and the sauce was pretty good. I do prefer a bit more flavor in my sauces, but still found the meal to be quite satisfying. Went here for brunch and it was packed. Wait for short time and got table at the bar side. I wouldn't expect this place look so cool from the outside but this is Tacoma so anything goes. The place is well lit, clean spacious and minimal decor. The staff are nice, friendly but can be slow at times, but it's brunch so no rush. The menu is easy and plenty of choices to choose from. The turnaround is in good amount of time. Drinks are excellent, well mixed. Overall good foods, great drinks, good services, and great vibe. read more

I've lived in the Tacoma ish area for almost four years now and have heard so many rave things about DOA - I finally just recently made it in, and I've definitely been missing out! From what I've heard, DOA used to be kind of rowdy and more of a bar scene. Now it seems they've leaned in more to the restaurant side, because they close at 10pm and it seemed really tame when I was in, with mostly couples in for a meal and just a couple people at the bar. Our waitress was super nice and they were quick with all of our orders. My friends and I decided to make a TikTok with our drinks (LOL) and one of my friends spilled one of her margs from her margarita flight and the waitress was super sweet and replaced it at no cost. So my friends got the marg flight and they both said it was super good (I tried a couple of sips and can confirm) while I got my usual hazy IPA. Nice local options for that as well. Both of my friends got the Down & Dirty Burgers which they praised, and I got the Blackened Chicken Cobb sans bleu cheese and tomatoes. When I tell you this salad SLAAPPPEDD, I mean it with my whole chest. The chicken was seasoned and cooked SO well. The rest of the salad overall tasted so fresh and their ranch is superb. 10/10. So glad I finally made it in to this local legend and can't wait to come back for that salad again! read more

My mom and boyfriend love this place, but I'm not a big fan of greasy diner style breakfasts, so this place doesn't really do it for me. Especially since, after trying to order something than an enormous plate of eggs, the brussel sprouts were overcooked and drenched in too much balsamic vinegar. Went to DOA on recommendation of friends. Yes it's a bar but according to the friends, it's a good place for breakfast. 21 and older only, and it looks like it belongs on DDD. However the experience versus the recommendation are not even close. The server was awesome and helpful. She alone gets a "5". But the food is where it falls off the table. We got the Chicken in Biscuit and the Elk Hash. First the Chicken in Biscuit - a biscuit that was harder than the rocks on Mt. Rainer, dryer than Death Valley. The chicken was no better as it was over cooked and not flavorful at all. The Sausage Gravy was cold and flavorless. Over all this dish lacked seasoning period and no amount of salt or pepper helped. And this was a dish we were told was a favorite of customers. The Elk hash - not one granule of seasoning that I could find. It was flavorless period, again not hot sausage gravy and the Elk (?) was not very good either. The sunny egg was the only thing I ate I could say was good, but $22 for an enjoyable egg is a bit much. To recap, food was underwhelming in any favor profile, over cooked and extremely under seasoned as I would have need my whole spice rack to even begin to get a flavor profile. I really like this place, staff is always nice and the food is excellent. I usually get the colonels hash (or admiral's hash?). However I have had bad luck here the last few times. Several times the taps were broken, which is always a huge disappointment when you are looking forward to a cold beer with your meal. But the last time I went we had nine punches on our punch card, and asked for the tenth and the server said they didn't do punch cards anymore. Seems a little unfair. The straw that broke the camel's back was their changing hours, they usually aren't open when I'm able to go. I haven't been in close to a year now! Had this place on my list for a while, and after going, I'm sorry I waited so long. First off the food is phenomenal. Everything is made in house including dressings and even their tater tots (which are stuffed). But even better then the food is the service, the guy that served us Friday later afternoon was a delight. I missed is name, but you can tell he cares about his customers, and loves his job. Argh. What to say. We have been to Dirty Oscar's four times but only eaten there twice. We really enjoyed the food. The drinks are really good. I recommend the Diablo scramble. The last time we stopped in to eat, the place was absolutely freezing. All the Patrons had their coats on. We asked the server if the heat was working and she said it was. We sat at the bar and it was ice cold. None of the bartenders greeted us or acknowledged that we had sat down. After about ten minutes of freezing and not being greeted we decided to leave. The time before that we decided to leave because we couldn't get any service. We always go out of our way to stop by because the food and drinks are so good. However, I don't think we will be back for a while. At least until the service improves. read more

I ate here yesterday for brunch with a friend. I made a reservation which really wasn't needed as it was somewhat busy but nowhere near capacity. Upon our arrival, we were greeted and seated quickly and given menus. We both opted for the mimosa flight to start us off. The mimosas were more juice-based than champagne-based which is not my preference, but they were still tasty. My friend ordered the French toast as her entree while I ordered the monte cristo. Both were extremely tasty and had some unique flavors. The portions were huge, and we both ended up taking about half of of our meals to go. Service was pretty solid as our server checked in on us a few times and made recommendations. The spot is more of a dive bar than a restaurant, but it was clean, and they were showing one of the Harry Potter films so they get extra points in my book. The pancake was big, but dense and thin. Service was underwhelming and food was slow to be brought out. The one coffee refill had to be requested and there was no inquiry about the meal. We felt ill the remainder of the day. Dive bars often have somebody the best food, but based on this visit, not DOA. read more

I had the Bacon Candy and Backyard Burger with fries for lunch and everything was excellent! The burger is a beef and pork smoked patty and among other things, has an onion ring on it. The onion ring was so tasty, I ordered a basket of them. The batter is flaky and peppery, and I was told it's the same batter they use on their fried chicken sandwich and chicken and waffles. I will absolutely be back to try those! The bacon was amazing and the sandwich has a lot going on but it all comes together and tastes delicious! Fries were good, too! Man it hurts to say this but Dirty Oscar's Annex just isn't what it used to be. This used to be one of those Tacoma gems you told everybody about. The food had flavor the energy was right and those parm tots were legendary. Now they feel different. They went from being hand formed when ordered to clearly frozen and reheated. You can taste it. The burger came out overcooked and dry and the service was rough. It took forever just to get our drinks ordered and even longer to get them. I'm not saying this to hate I'm saying it because Dirty Oscar's used to set the bar. It was one of those spots that had soul. I think my most favorite part of this visit was Yessly. Amazing bartender and absolutely one of the most personable individuals I have ever encountered. Her Michelada was the most extraordinary one I have ever had. Thank the good Lord we had no wait time and sat right at the bar. Yessly was so accommodating and friendly. Walked in and only 2 other table seated (2 servers on staff) and already served. We were seated with menus and water and waited 20 minutes to have anyone return to our table. Received drinks and by the time food arrived all glasses empty and didn't even inquire if we wanted refills and had to hollar as she was walking away to get additional drinks. Food and drinks were all delicious. Was very clear we were finished eating and after 25 minutes had to approach the bar to ask for boxes and tab. Received boxes after another 10 minutes and waited 15 more minutes for our tab.. so if have 2+ hours to spare and you don't mind a long wait on service I would recommend this place for the amazing food. read more

Menu has some unique options, flavors are fantastic, and portions are generous. Would recommend the chicken & waffles - literally the best I've ever had. As for service, the theme seems to be slow and inattentive. Between the two times that I've been here, we've had drinks never show up, wrong checks dropped to our table, utensils not given out until someone has to get up and ask, no napkins, etc. As someone that has worked in the industry for multiple years, avoiding eye contact with your tables while you're all gathered chatting near the bar isn't the move. We had heard good reviews of Dirty Oscar's so decided to try it for lunch. When we walked in we noticed that for a noon lunch there were hardly any people in there. The server seated us and brought us menus. We found the service to be slow but attributed that to the kitchen. We ordered a Reuben, hamburger,onion rings, fries and iced tea. When the order finally came the Reuben was burnt to a crisp, the onion rings were hard as a rock, the hamburger was practically raw. It was hard to find the corned beef and what there was was dry and hard. The only good part of the meal were the French fries. Their sauce was supposed to be a Smokey tomato but it was neither and had an odd flavor. Would we go back, no. Would we recommend it, no. I met a friend at Dirty Oscar's Annex for drinks and a light meal. I'd never been there, and was curious to find an easy, low-key place for future relaxation and imbibing. But our experience could have been much better. After we were seated, our waitress took our drink orders: an Old Fashioned for each of us. The drinks were good, despite having maraschino cherries (yuk!). The waitress came to take meal orders, and I asked about the nachos. She said they were "really good". I wasn't all that hungry, and asked my companion, "If I order nachos, will you eat a few?" She replied, "Maybe a couple..." Apparently, the waitress thought my friend didn't want to eat, because she wrote down my order, grabbed the menus and walked away! We didn't see her again until she brought the nachos, with two small plates, dropping it all off as she hustled past the table to deliver a sandwich to another table. The nachos were covered in a cold coagulated-looking white sauce, with chopped tomato salsa (?). I don't know if it was supposed to be cheese sauce, but it looked and tasted like basic unseasoned white sauce. (I think the cook forgot to add cheese to the sauce!). It was unappealing, and unappetizing. We fished about half the chips out from under the gloppy "sauce" as we visited. My friend decided to eat what she could, since she wasn't going to get her own meal. By the time the waitress returned to ask if we wanted a refill on our drinks, we were done eating. My friend asked for "whisky and soda", her go-to drink. The waitress returned with a shot of whiskey on ice... and a tall glass of soda water with ice! (When I got the bill, I saw that I'd been charged an additional $4 for the soda water!) My friend poured a little of the soda into her whisky, unable to avoid slopping some of it onto the table, which we mopped up with napkins. When the waitress brought the drink, I mentioned that we were finished eating. She then took the plate of nachos and left, leaving the other dirty plates, silverware, and empty drink glasses! She didn't ask if we enjoyed it, or seem to wonder that most of the nachos were untouched, as one might expect. Rather, she simply took it away without comment! I asked for the bill, and asked her to take the two dirty plates from the table, which she did (but left the empty glasses and flatware, and pile of wet napkins). My friend asked her to take the nearly-full soda water too. And again, she didn't question anything, (i.e., "...was something wrong with the soda?), but simply took it away! I've heard good things about Dirty Oscar's, but my experience was pretty bad. I hope it was a one-off; perhaps the waitress was a trainee and the cook was having a bad night. Or maybe she was distracted by a personal issue. I prefer to give folks the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps I should have complained about the food then and there. But the waitress seemed very busy (even though there were only a few tables occupied), and somehow it felt that complaining would have made things worse. The service was lacking, but the food was truly awful. Maybe it was just the nachos; other dishes might be much better. I just hope others have a better experience than we did. read more
