I had a smash burger and I have absolutely zero regrets. okay... maybe I had one, though, and I definitely should have gotten two smash burgers instead of one. Dirt dog is a chain of hot dog restaurants, founded in Los Angeles and has 5 locations throughout the area. This location in Long Beach closed in 2023, but then reopened in the same location, this time as Drips Cheesecake, with a food menu inspired by Dirt Dog. The location is listed under the dirt dog web page, and thus writing my review on that page. My wife and I stopped in for dine-in, ordering (and paying) at the counter after perusing the lighted menu above. It's divided into sections: bacon-wrapped hot dogs; tacos and wings; smash burgers and sandwiches; loaded fries; desserts: chocolate dipped cheesecake on a stick, deep fried oreos, chorros ; and hand crafted cocktails. We were the only folks dining in, with our food being delivered quickly after we ordered. The server said the self-serve soda machine wasn't working, so just gave us a bottled water, which was nice. Single Slam Burger ($7.50) - ordered plain. Good beef with melty american cheese on a potato bun. Birria Grilled cheese ($10.95) - shredded beef birria, topped with american cheese. It was good birria. Small chili fries ($6) - a small portion of battered fries, covered in a good beef chili with white and green onions. Strawberry Shortcake cheesecake ($8.99) - large pie shaped cheesecake, hand-dipped and decorated after ordering. This was the best part of the meal, very rich with a couple of bites satisfying. My family and I made a quick visit for dinner. It was quite empty with hip hop vibes. Dirt Dog is owned by Timothy Cam who discovered the famous hot dogs wrapped in bacon on the streets of LA. He loved it so much, therefore decided to come up with Dirt Dogs. It all started in LA and now there's a location in Long Beach. I had their hot dog before, it was quite delicious. This was my third time visiting and I ordered their smash burger, garlic fries, birria grilled cheese, and regular grilled cheese sandwich for my daughter. Seems like they had added more to their menu, since my last visit. The smash burger was a hit with lots of flavors along with the garlic fries. As for the birria grilled cheese, there wasn't a lot of the savory meat and it was a bit salty. Maybe a small cup of consomme to dip it in would have balanced it out. Somewhat hidden in the corner of this Vons shopping center near a Private sneaker store and Panda Express. I have walked by a few times without committing to going in and ordering something. One of the first benefits of Dirt Dog is that they are open later than most places in the area for food. The dining area was clean and spacious and the servers have "In-N-Out" level friendliness and customer service. I got the House Dog. I have to say, the dog surprised me. It was really, really good. Must be some sort of all Angus beef blend or something, but the actual meat was way different and better than your average dog. The bun was toasted and there was a lot of great texture contrast going on (soft/crunchy, juicy/dry, salty/tangy). I also got the chili cheese fries. I ordered everything to go, and the fries come in this little Easter basket method to prevent all the toppings from getting smashed down into the fries, so when I got them home they looked exactly the way they would if I ate them at the restaurant. Now, the food is rich and heavy (bacon, cheese, fries, sausage, etc.), so it is not something I could stop in for all the time. The dogs were generous portions! What impressed me is the bun held everything in without falling apart. Those who have had loaded hot dogs will understand why this is a big deal. Fries were very good, I loved this flavor and taste and how the ingredients are coated on fries yet not soggy. All fresh. The dogs bread was fresh and better than most so I will say that made them much better than most places.
