I am writing with some disparaging news about DirecTV. I cannot recommend them as your internet/television provider because I find their business practices to be both unfair and irrational. I noticed today that my fees have been substantially higher than the agreed-upon rate from when I signed up with DirecTV over one year ago. I heeded DirecTV's advice and enrolled in autopay, so I was not checking my account. I incorrectly assumed that DirecTV would keep to its pledge not to increase my bill for at least three years. I was originally set to pay $73.88 per month for television. It turns out that this was only my charge for the first two months. Ever since, I was charged between $113 and now $200.90 per month! The explanation is that I was receiving premium channels that were free and now are charged at the full rate. DirecTV had expected me to take initiative to decline these services once the fee increases were in place. Unfortunately, nobody told me that I had to make any affirmative claim to cancel these channels. In fact, I never even knew I had them! All of this is in clear violation of the saleswoman's promise that my fees are locked for three years! I calculated that between January 2015 and December 2015, I was overcharged $947.16. I figured this would be an easy fix, so I called DirecTV this morning to request a refund of these overages. I was flatly declined a refund by the billing department supervisor. I will withhold her name because she was simply adhering to a poor policy. I was told that it was my responsibility to contact DirecTV earlier with my concerns and that there was no way that I would be refunded this large amount. I mean, do I work for DirecTV? She then suggested that I contact the president of DirecTV directly via snail mail (???) to levy my complaint as she was the highest authority on this type of matter. I was bounced from department to department -- from general reception to retention to billing. All told, I spent over two hours on hold or talking to DirecTV. Nobody could tell me anything with any certainty. The billing department supervisor then told me that my only recourse was to cancel my account because the company would not be offering me a refund or any other conciliatory gesture to compensate me for the nearly 110% overbilling over the past year. On what planet is it better business practice to steal money from a wronged customer versus keeping that customer in perpetuity? My only true recourse is to use social media to get the attention of the company to let leadership know that I may have to take the advice of the billing department supervisor and go back to Comcast. The funny thing is that I switched to DirecTV last year mostly to escape the customer service horror that is Comcast. At least Comcast never stole $947 from me. read more

Would not recommend! We cancelled our service due to finding a better deal with Comcast. We were told we would be charged a $360 cancellation fee we were unaware of. A few days later, we were told we would be charged an extra $10 for canceling the equipment insurance. Uh ok. A week later we were told our cancellation fee would be $420 plus $46 in tax. Smh! After 30 minutes of explaining we were told something completely different, the fee was brought down to $360 but we were told we'd still have to pay the $46 tax. This wasn't the first time there was a discrepancy with our bill but it is the last. Happy to be done with their service! read more

HORRIBLE!!! The only reason I got direct tv is for my husband to have the NFL Sunday Ticket (there's the 1 star). I have called several times for assistance with fixing my bill and of course no help just the run around. I called today to move my service to my new home and guess what they thought they were doing me a favor by trying to charge me $240 telling me that was a discount because it is normally $500. My bill is different every month, give or take a few cents/dollars..2 MPH wind..I have no service...when I have to call them( dreadful from the beginning) their customer service has no answers, apparently get irritated and then I'm cut off.. One of my faves is showing a balance due, then u pay it and then it tells u there's still a balance owed..better yet, before a month after u paid and they're showing a balance due(usually very minimal, but still)..welp..they shut you off... First of all I would give them a negative review if I could. Terrible service. We switched from DISH, big mistake!! The Direct TV sales person lied about our 2 year contract. After 1 year our bill over doubled. It has taken 60 days to get that somewhat resolved. Now our bill is not what we were quoted for a 2 year fixed price, it is about$10 more than we were guaranteed for 2 years. ( Guaranteed pricing is a joke!) The equipment is junk compared to DISH. I like Direct TV but don't like dealing with customer service. I had my roof redone and the roofing company removed my dish and forgot to re-install it. So I called Direct TV to install it and reset the signal. Long story short, the roofing company came out and installed the dish. I still needed the signal to be set. Then Direct TV came out and made the adjustments. Afterwards I called customer service and told them that they didn't have to install the dish, they still charged me the installation fee. After being a long time customer of over 15 years, they couldn't credit $50.00. Just offered 3 months of free HBO :( read more

Direct TV, an AT&T subsidiary, is the worst television service provider I have ever experienced. My spouse signed up through Costco. Right before selling our house in Fairfax City, I called to disconnect service and attempt to return equipment. I had already moved out of state and my spouse was out of the country, but my son (who had also moved) could turn in the equipment so we wouldn't be charged. I was assured service had been terminated upon my request. After 45 minutes (no kidding) of back and forth with the service rep, and finding out there was no physical location to actually turn in the equipment, I was told Direct TV would have to send boxes to my former address so the remotes and cable boxes could be mailed to them. I told the rep they would have to be sent to my neighbor. However, she never received the mailers. A month or so passed, then I started receiving emailed bills addressed to another person under my email account. I sent emails back to Direct TV to inform them that I was NOT that person and had disconnected my service. Friday I discovered Direct TV had not, in fact, discontinued my service and required payment of over $266 to clear my account. Bottom line, the company lies, cares nothing about customer service, and makes it as difficult as possible to return equipment. I strongly recommend boycotting this company and, by extension, any AT&T service. Also, as a Costco member, I would suggest that the company be more circumspect when they bring in outside vendors. When a vendor offers substandard service, then it is unworthy of Costco endorsement. read more

The Satellite TV used to work fine. Then Directv made a software update that causes the screen to go black when you press up/down for changing the channels. Have called and had service out. They all admit there is a programming error, but they do not seem to be able to fix it. Very disappointed in AT&T and Directv. read more

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! They are unapologetic and unhelpful. I had a tech. come out and inform me he could not install the dish because he was not prepared. He needed to put bricks on the roof...or something. DO NOT BELIVE THIS! I was so upset that they made me sit around all afternoon waiting, and then come unprepared to install, for what seemed pretty basic setup. I called DirectTV, and they sent someone out the next day. The tech. came the next day, and laughed at the story from the day prior, without saying it he basically implied the tech the day before just didn't feel like being there. The new tech. installed everything without a problem. EXCEPT it was not a DVR box. So i had round 2 with DirectTV. without fail i get passed around every time I call. The worst TV service ever. Bad service, bad quality, poor customer service. Beware Directv will screw you if they able. We paid for premier service at $19 per mo, when we had a problem it took them days to come out. No TV for days for $19. extra each MONTH!!! So we cancelled the premier service and expected to wait days for service going forward Then they sold us a HD receiver and told us that we would own the HD REceiver for an additional $130 bucks. So we paid $230+ for the HD receiver, only to be told when we ended service that they leased it to us, and they just scammed us for an extra $130 HAHA and btw if we don't give it back to them, they will charge us $45. I recently had Direct TV installed and thought I was getting a killer deal! Forget about read the small print, you must record your own dialogue with each representative because they will promise you the world to get you to obligate to a larger package deal, only to tell you too bad, when you realize they provided false information. They don't even try to work with you. They claim they must submit an escalation ticket and you would be contacted shortly. However, they never contact you and when you contact them, they flat out lie and say they listened to the recorded call and you were never promised what you know you were promised. The first bill was a trick as well, with additional fees that were never discussed applied! I truly can't believe that service has sunk this low! What a travesty!!!!!!! Unfortunately I had a bad process with DirectTV. The teaser rate for 19.99 is not correct. I am paying 47.00 a month and that will go up for my second year of service. Beware! Its disappointing because I was hoping I would have a cable provider better than Comcast. Tried to update my account information and request a move from Vermont to Virginia.. Took 4 days to get through and had to use a previous phone number. They were charging me $200 moving fee and still hadn't updated my phone number or married name and were going to charge an additional $198. fee to activate a wireless internet service I didn't order. I have been a DirecTV customer for 13 years. Until recently, they were 4-5 stars. However, since they were acquired by AT&T, they are absolutely horrible. There are features that do not work (e.g. live streaming) and the help desk people are so busy trying to remember to call everything "AT&T services" that they forget why you are calling them and, in the end, do not know what to do. I learned today from the "AT&T Services" help desk that streaming apparently only works via WiFi and that both the receiver and the laptop must be on the same WiFi network. My receiver is hardwired to my network via ethernet connection, so streaming doesn't work (???!!!!) Also, does that make any frigging sense? Why would I want to stream to my computer, if I am in the vicinity of my receiver? What happened to all those commercials with people watching stuff at the airport? In the end, I gave up and was able to watch the olympic game through a streaming tv service from another country where my brother lives - I guess now I need to pay my brother's cable bill. The NBC website would not recognize my DirecTV login either. The same thing happened when I wanted to watch a baseball game while at work and ESPN would not recognize my Directv login either. I can login directly to the DirecTV website, but streaming from there does not work because, you know, the WiFi thing... I have been keeping quiet all these years at how my bill keeps going up (over $100 a month for the most basic package, and that includes "discounts"). Without streaming capability, that bill is only paying for the couple of hours that we are home at night watching the news. Ahhh, the price of loyalty... Since I am venting, let me pile on the other things that I never complained about until now: - Pay per view movies bill twice sometimes, even though I should be able to watch them multiple times within a 48 hour window. Sometimes I have been double-billed simply for pausing the movie. I no longer use DirecTV pay per view and use my smart tv to get my movies from Prime, Vudu, etc. - Video drops momentarily when switching channels. - Audio loses sync via HDMI, causing audio dropouts on surround processor - Genie server and wireless receiver go out of sync occasionally, requiring a reboot (genie wireless receiver is behind the TV inside a wall, so this is major surgery for me) - Perhaps coincidence but, since AT&T took over, the pay per view movie choices are terrible. Many people are "cutting the cord" these days. I may be cutting the dish. read more

I recommend any other company. HORRIBLE AWFUL NO GOOD VERY BAD COMPANY -Not only do they have poor customer service-as in if you try and call them you are lucky to get a person. If you do get a person they don't help you with anything. The customer is NOT their first priority. You'd think with the arrival of chrome cast, netflix and roku that they would be more the anxious to make their customers happy! This also figures as I have had the same customer service issues with AT&T and left them along time ago too. -Their prices are outrageous--we were paying over 200 dollars a month and the bill continued to rise!! WHAT!!!!! -They punch holes in your roof and walls -Once they install the dish apparently it's then your responsibility. Soo this means when you move they DO NOT UNINSTALL their equipment. I strongly recommend that if you are considering using directv you don't. Since ATT took over service has been eliminated. I have been with directv for 17 years so I have a good basis for my opinion. I have now been without service for 4 days, spent hours on the phone with up to the supervisor level. Supposedly they are having errors in their appointment system and there is "no way" they can make an offline tasking to a technician. They just called me and said they will call with status in 72 hours. Meanwhile they are collecting my money (including the optional maintenance service charge). Since ATT is supposed to be an information technology company and it is taking them more than a week to solve a software problem, I recommend you choose Dish or Verizon. WORST customer service ever. They continuously raised their supposedly "guaranteed" rates. Then, AFTER I canceled and needed to call to pay the early termination fee, they kept me on the phone for over an hour using various stall tactics and groveling to keep my service. That's over an hour of my life that I will never get back and it was insulting to my intelligence. I ordered DirecTV because my bill was going up with Comcast and it was irritating. Turns out it was a terrible mistake. The Verizon package that I was offered didn't come with wireless speed high enough to support DirecTV's OnDemand function so I had to upgrade and pay more (yet for some reason, I still need to shut it off about once a day to get it to work again. It's also nice that the cable shuts of periodically for some reason (right now there is a light rain and it's not working). So, long story short, I have a cable service that works about 2/3rds of the time, costs more than Comcast (which I still think is terrible) with internet that keeps not working. When signing up, customer service is wonderful. I was on the phone with them an entire day trying to see what they could get me for the price that I wanted. WORST SERVICE EVER! Do not at any costs get this satellite service. I live in a multi-dwelling unit (MDU) building and Directv is my only option as the building provides no other choices. Reception is spotty at best. Since the building has a main receiver that uses ethernet like cabling, there is no coaxial that runs to the unit. This is supposedly the reason why we are stuck with HD HDRs that are obsolete (HR21-200). I kid you not. Now the service is out for the upteenth time and when I talk with the company that is supposed to maintain Directv for the building (Access Media 3), they tell me I must wait until Monday (exactly 6 days from today) for a technician to fix a "searching for signal on satellite" error. The last time a technician, Luke, came out he explained that I wouldn't be getting some channels because the company didn't know if it would replace a part they needed to order because they weren't sure if my building to renew its contract with them. Apparently, this part costs around $2,000 which they easily get from my building from about 10 units in a building that houses almost 350! (Emphasis mine). I'm beyond numb at this point. Avoid this company and Access Media 3 like the plague! The only reason they get one star is because Luke is very gracious and tries his best to provide a level of professionalism in stark contrast to the rude customer service reps at Directv. This is my first Yelp review ever- my experience with Direct TV was SO BAD that I created an account just to write this. They used to be a great company with great service, I've been with them for over 10 years. The rate kept creeping up and up. When I called to discuss it, they offered me a pitiful $10 off per month. I said my local cable company, RCN, can offer me the same service at half the price. They said that's their final offer. I installed RCN and so far like it. I called DirecTV to cancel, and they offered to cut my rate in half, to which i said it's too late now. Now they are trying to stick me with a contract out fee of $360 after over 10 years. So I have been a costumer since 2014 and due to the amount of times I've had to call them to fix thing like my bill etc. I'm finally cutting ties. I have actually tried to cancel service 2 times before and both times they talked me into staying by reducing my bill or giving me movie channels for a few months. More and more I found myself using Hulu or Netflix so I finally decided to cancel. Why waste money right? They talked me into just keeping my Genie and the package I currently had for 13 dollars a month!!! Great deal right? Well due to that I continually received calls to upgrade my service, annoying but tolerable for such a cheap price. Then my Genie crapped out and I needed a replacement so they tried to charge 20 some odd dollars for shipping. I told them not bother and just cancel my service but then they waved the shipping fee. So I received the new genie and sent the old back in the same box as directed. Now I have been charged 156 dollars on my credit card (auto pay). I call to find out why and they said they had not received the broken Genie. I told them to track the package and what do you know....... they did receive it but it wasn't updated in their system yet. Obviously I want my money back but they cant refund until the returned Genie is pushed through their system. Then I find out that I will not be receiving a refund but my Directv account will be credited. I don't want credit on my account I want my money back on the same card they pulled it from but apparently that's not how they do business. So I tell them I'm thru and to cancel my service. The supervisor rudely says that this isn't a problem and I would receive my refund on a gift card. What? Why cant it just go back on my credit card? Save yourself the trouble dealing with these guys. I look forward to my Genie getting thru their broken system so I can wash my hands clean of this company. read more

I signed up for Yelp just to vent about the absolute nightmare that is Directv. Hands down the worst company for customer service and billing issues. If you are thinking about signing up, be prepared for the old "bait-and-switch" with a representative promising a nice rate for your satellite package but not telling you that your bill will increase twice within one year. If you call customer service or the billing department to deal with problems such as the unexpected bill hike or subscription charges to channels you never even requested, each representative will tell you something very different regarding your account. Also, representatives will not transfer your calls to speak to a supervisor who can rectify discrepancies between what different representatives tell you. Instead you'll get the same line that "the manager is too busy to take your call now because there are a lot of customers on hold ahead of you." Not a good sign. If I hadn't paid so much money for the initial installation, I would have switched companies before my first year. read more

DirecTV has HORRIBLE customer service representatives who give misleading information, false information & do not disclose all information to Consumers. I asked specific questions, assured my understanding of it was correct & then I receive my bill with fees on it that were supposedly "waived". When I called to question it, I was told "I don't know why you were told that". Mind you, I spoke to 2 different people on 2 seperate occasions, BOTH assuring me that ALL FEES were waived, onky the monthly premium. we've had Direct tv for a while and the service has been terrible, the price outrageous. We can't even watch dvr'd programs anymore. Recently we decided to cancel and go elsewhere and a few days later the DVR doesn't work at all!!! 1 Tv doesn't work at all, and the other only does real time. When I called for a refund for the Service I'm not getting, they guy basically insuated I was lying and said it's probably a technical issue - funny timing right? Then the gentleman hung up on me. I purchased an HD DVR from Direct TV because they advertised that the satellite company had the most HD programing. When the Direct TV technicians arrived to place the HD receiver satellite, they told me that there were trees in the line of sight and therefore I would not be able to receive any HD programming. I attempted to return the HD DVR because I could not received the promised HD programing, which was the only reason I had pruchased it. HOWEVER, I was charged a $350 "early termination" fee. I fought the imposition of this fee for a couple of months, but the company did not give an inch, and I finally paid the $350. If this was not outright fraudent advertising or bait and switch, then what else could it be? ALWAYS make sure that you are protected against these unscrupulous and fradulent practices by Direct TV. In fact, I should have filed a complaint with the FCC or Consumer Protection Agency. But anyone who lives in Washington knows that Congress and the Federal Agencies are controled by the special interests (think the minerals management agency and the oil spill), and the telecommunications industry is one of the largest lobbying orginazations on the Hill. Think about your cell phone contract...look at how much your "early termination" fee is there. Service satisfaction is NOT a factor...no matter how dissatisfied you are or how poor the service...Congress and the telecommunications industry have seen to it that you will ALWAYS pay the termination fee. Just one more example of F**K the consumer all in the name of competition and free enterprise. The enterprise may be free, but for sure the consumer is not. read more
