The Directv product (sound quality, picture quality, DVR) is outstanding. Everything else about them sucks.
This review is long overdue. I first signed up for Directv in 2011. I was induced with a tremendous deal, $40/month for a huge package with every channel I could ever want; but as with all DTV offers, I was required to sign a two year agreement. The thing about DTV is that the initial price is always low because of a variety of discounts of varying lengths baked into the original contract. You get the super low rate for the first three months, then discounts are slowly withdrawn, resulting in bill creep. It seems that every month, the bill gets a little bit higher, putting you in some weird limbo where you have no idea what your next bill will look like. This continues for the first year, then you're paying full price.
My bill after the first year was $130/month (tv only). After about 9 months at this rate, I decided to switch to cable. When I asked for someone to come out and take back the dish, they refused, stating that they don't remove the dishes that they install. I would need to have the dish removed at my own expense. (Something they conveniently forgot to mention prior to installation.) I paid the $60 ($20 per month remaining on the contract) termination fee, made the switch, and thought that was the end. I was wrong.
Immediately, I received multiple phone calls each week trying to get me to come back at another deeply discounted rate. Having been once bitten, I turned them down. A few months later I got a bill from Directv for a nominal amount, about $15 I think. When I called to figure out what was going on, I was told that it was for movie rentals I had made months before that I hadn't been charged for. I lived alone and the movies that they claimed I had ordered were movies that I had never seen. (Other reviewers report having the same thing happen to them. I assume this is a ploy that DTV routinely uses on customers who have left. I'd guess there's a percentage of customers in households with multiple viewers who assume that someone must've ordered the movies and simply pay the charge. There has to be a class-action here somewhere.)
In the years since I've left DTV, I continue to get solicitations by phone and through the mail to return. (In fact, the only reason I'm writing this review is because I just got another call from them.) These guys cannot take a hint. I'm sure my heirs will be fending off their calls long after I'm dead.
If you need the best sound/picture, are okay with having their antennae on your roof in perpetuity, can afford to pay a premium, and don't mind aggressive telemarketing, get Directv. If, however, you think there's even the slightest chance that circumstances may change, leading you to switch to another service sometime in the future, stay away. read more
