I ordered the full rack of ribs. These are the dry rub type and the dry rub wasn't flavorful enough and there wasn't enough of it. The result was that the ribs were a little bland. This was a massive ambit of food that I couldn't finish at the restaurant. The wife had a combo with a half slab of ribs and Mac and cheese. She found the Mac and choose good, but had a complaint similar to mine about the ribs. She also said they were too fatty. The group ordered poutine to share. This was good, but not amazing. We went here for a Rehearsal dinner. It was a Buffett. We had pulled pork sandwiches, Mac and cheese, and salad. I was part of a large group. We ordered the nachos, deviled eggs, and fried green tomatoes. Platters included the pulled pork entree, sausage and brisket, and ribs. The appetizers were well received and for most the best part of the meal. The entrees were mixed and the overall consensus of the group were that they were disappointing. I really liked the brisket and shared it with my girlfriend who really really did not like her pulled pork sandwich because it was too salty. The ribs were received with a bit of a lackluster response. No one enjoyed the potato salad side. The Mac and cheese was the most polarizing side with half liking it a lot and half thinking it was gross. I ordered a old fashioned cocktail and it was... ok. The service was a mix as well. The server was having a bad day and I sympathized but it came across in her level of patience with folks. However, they were professional and brought out a new meal for my girlfriend who did not care for the pulled pork. The chef apologized which seemed above and beyond but was appreciated. Overall, it was a ok experience but not a memorable one where I would be itching to return. I expected the wait time to be crazy, and that it would be a nightmare finding parking. However, to my surprise, we were seated very quickly, and we even got to sit out on the patio. They make some darn good smoked BBQ and tasty sides at Dinosaur BBQ! Our first visit to Troy and we're glad we stopped into Dinosaur BBQ for lunch. They apparently do a great lunch business on the weekends as there was a 20-30 minute wait. We happily found seats at the far end of the bar for immediate seating. The bartender/server was extremely pleasant and helpful pointing us to some of her favorites and providing feedback from other customers. We opted for Prime Brisket sandwiches with Spicy Cucumber Salad and BBQ Fried Rice as our sides. I noticed many other customers were carrying out to-go boxes and I could see why when we got our food. Portions are large! The brisket is a great sandwich topped with pickled onions & Jalapeños and the house sauce. The cucumber salad was delicious and had a tangy bite. The rice was good too but I'd probably try the mac and cheese. The folks next to us got the Creole Deviled Eggs. They seem pricey but they are loaded up and looked awesome. They seemed to enjoy them. Dinosaur has a creative menu and friendly staff which at the time (Jan 29) all wore masks. Located riverside, the restaurant has a great atmosphere and looks to have an awesome outdoor seating area when the weather permits. read more

This was our first time visiting this location. We've previously been to the one in Syracuse and had high expectations. We made a reservation online to avoid any wait. Sometimes a place just grows on you. Part of me is reluctant to give this regionally famous barbecue operator the full five stars, because people may come in with too high expectations. I think Josh S. said it well in that you have to come in expecting Northeast-style barbecue. Dino isn't perfect, but no place is. While I wish the brisket was fattier, the crust and smoke ring the meat develops in the pit, are seriously good. Personally I prefer full spare ribs, but the St. Louis style ribs are a textbook example of how ribs should be done. No, they don't fall off the bone. But with a gentle tug, the bone pulls cleanly from the meat, just like it's supposed to do. And even though my heart belongs to Cornell style chicken, the smoked birds here are one of my favorite things on the menu. The menu feels expensive. I'm not sure why. But values abound. The $70 family meal is an insane amount of food. I'm tempted to order it just as a solo diner, and bring home the leftovers to have food for the week. But my latest outing, I explored the new lunch menu, and I love how it provides a smaller portion of their pit-to-plate meats. With a side of sauteed dark leafy greens, it almost seems healthy. And at $12 it felt like a reasonable price for a sit down lunch. Can you get better brisket if you flew to Austin and stood in line for several hours? Sure. But sitting on the water with a view of the Hudson, and enjoying some smoked meaty delights is always a treat. I had the bbq bowl- smoked meat (in my case brisket AND pulled pork) on a bed of whipped sweet potatoes, simmered greens and cornbread. All nestled next to it was a green salad- if you ask me, the salad was just there to make you feel a little less guilty about the BBQ. My dining companion had a pulled pork sandwich with a side of Mac and cheese which had just enough cheese and just enough seasoning. BBQ joints are getting better and better at the slow proper process of smoked meats and I really like Dino. I've not been to the original Syracuse location and must get there in the future. Everything I had was awesome - brisket, wings slaw, collards. The food came out in a timely manner and the server was great - quick, friendly, and very knowledgeable about the food and what goes into the rubs. They have a huge space right on the river in Troy but get there early or be prepared to wait and fight over parking spaces haha. If there is one thing they could improve......some bourbon craft cocktails (just seems to go well with BBQ), and some diversity in their IPA drafts.....they have 3-4 on tap but they are all of the east coast hazy style. One West Coast style, or Bell's 2 Hearted, would fill the void. I'm just not a fan of the less hoppy east coast variety. read more
