I am so sad to write this review, I've been coming here since they opened in 1997/98. Over the years the quality of their food has gone down terribly. The last time I was here my companion's food had produce that was dirty and unwashed. I had meat that was chewy and didn't taste like meat, probably the fat. Wow. I called to ask if they were still open tonight and the person who answered said "yes." We get there at 9:06pm (they're open until 9:30) and she says: "Oh, we're closed." I reply that we called 5 minutes earlier to double check and she responds that "we're open for take-out." So annoying and disappointing. Why didn't the person say that when I called? We dined at Ding How earlier this week.. We ordered Vegetarian Hot and Sour Soup, Steamed Rice, Spring Rolls, and Phoenix and Dragon. I'm the dragon. Vegetarian Hot and Sour Soup was as good as it is on the regular menu. My wife came in suffering from sinus congestion, cough and general malaise. She left Ding How invigorated. Ding How Hot and Sour Soup is more than delicious.The chef came out from the kitchen to serve the soup. Spring rolls: crispy flaky battered, the cabbage inside still crispy. Piping hot when served and perfectly done. First class spring roll. We heaped steamed rice with the Phoenix and Dragon and were not disappointed. Phoenix and Dragon share the same Ding How plate, it's like getting two dishes for one. One side is shrimp, garlic, baby corn, snow peas, mushrooms and carrot slices.The snow peas were crunchy: just perfect and the shrimp had a chewy bite. Dragon: chicken battered and in a red sweet pepper sauce. Perfect, especially with squeezes from the ripe orange slices. Sort out the dried red peppers if you want. This was twice the food we could possibly want for $32.00. We wanted left overs which were graciously placed in paper containers by the server. This is a great place. Do not eat here! I did this evening. The food was so bad that we weren't able to chew it as the meat was so hard/tough. When we informed our server we weren't offered to have the dish remade or offered anything else. We paid fully for a meal we didn't eat and then were told next time they would "help us order something good". I was with my family here for the first time, The food was poor and service was terrible! They charge us double tip because we had a party 7 and didn't let us know . So we can double tip on the table vs and on the bill. The carpet was really dirty and smelly . Also The waitress brought the wrong order to our table and didn't even speak English well. It's always been a friendly nice restaurant with good food. But today we had this really rude waitress who kept clearing our table and taking away our plates even before we were done. It was as if she just wanted us out. The restaurant wasn't even full. Third time she came to get one of our plates, I told her we are not done and she better wait. First off, awesome service, and food. Love the reasonable prices, and tasty menu. Especially love it, because they have a whole separate vegetarian menu. I was told the owner became a vegetarian for health reasons, and so he offers every meat dish made with substitute meat (tofu, wheat gluten, etc). I like the tea that they serve with the meals. And, the hot and sour soup is perfect on a sick day! I do have to say, I have heard from people that they have had bad experiences in terms of pests. I have not yet experienced it myself, but after hearing that I wasn't keen on going back. I'm in love. Talk about a refreshing dining experience! The vegetarian/mostly vegan menu is amazing. There are no superficial attempts to make anything taste "healthy" like so many places feel the need to when offering anything vegetarian/vegan. It's just simple, perfectly seasoned, freaking fantastic Chinese food. Last night I shared the vegetable chow mein, orange mock chicken, hot and sour soup and vegetable potstickers. Everything was incredible. We had enough leftovers for another large meal and the bill (which included a small beer) was only $33. Most places would charge that for half the food we received. Maybe we ate at different times, but from what I can recount, Ding How had the best "chin-ju" chicken made. It was my first time eatting it, and man, the slightly deep fried chicken with green onions and what not is great. They have a scrumpcious fried rice and egg roll as well. The usual hot and sour soup is very hot and sour, but they give you a choice of egg flour instead. They have a huge banquet room in the back, but after college, we did return back and the food wasn't as good as it was then. Change of owners? I've only ever ordered take out, so I can't comment on the service for a sit-down meal! The portions are great - you can easily make at least 2 meals out of one main dish. I'm a vegetarian and very much appreciate the number of options available. I'm not a fan of imitation meat in general, so I've never tried those dishes but I've definitely enjoyed the tofu and vegetable ones! I've tried the Kung Pao Tofu and the Hunan Tofu. The Hunan Tofu was delicious! Just the right amount of spice for someone who likes a good kick to their chinese food. The spring rolls are crispy and not overly drenched in oil. They are great for this and let's face it most people dine in big groups in Davis. And seeing As i lived with 3-4 vegetarians their complete veggie menu was always convenient. This is a pretty underrated restaurant as far as I'm concerned. I will say that the service is kind of awful: they sometimes forget that we ordered an appetizer, they never refill our waters, and they take forever to do anything when the restaurant is nowhere near capacity. They really should hire more people. Consider yourself warned. This says nothing of the food, though. The vegetarian options are simply top-notch. I'm not really into meat replacement, but that's okay, because they'll make literally anything on the menu with tofu instead. I can recommend the sesame tofu, Mongolian tofu, curry tofu, and eggplant garlic sauce. However, I would not recommend chin jiu tofu (it just doesn't work). It's also worth noting that the portions are gigantic, so I almost always have lunch for the next day when I come here for dinner. read more

I've tried three Chinese places in Davis and this one is by far the best, primarily because in addition to their regular menu, they have a dedicated vegetarian / vegan menu with tons of options. The other two places I've been are pretty limited in their non-meat selections, particularly when it comes to appetizers, so Ding How's menu is quite refreshing. I love the vegetarian pot stickers and the sweet and sour "chicken." (The spring rolls are pretty tasty, too.) I keep thinking I'll branch out, but every time I end up ordering the same thing. They get extra points because they're generally much lighter on the grease than the other Chinese places I've visited here. I only go to Ding How if Four Seasons is closed or if I am not willing to drive from North Davis all the way to South Davis. Being right across the street from me, I had to give Ding How a try at least. I have never dined in before, only for take out during dinner time. The food is usually ready for me within 20 minutes, and every time that I have gone to pick up my food, the restaurant is packed. That's a good sign. I've had the Chicken with Broccoli, Roast Duck (half), and side of plain white rice. I think the total came out to over $20, so definitely more expensive than Four Seasons. Unfortunately, the food is simply not as good as Four Seasons. The Chicken with Broccoli was primarily broccoli and I couldn't find much chicken. The Roast Duck as extremely oily (like, puddles), and was too salty. Though living in Hong Kong was altered my taste for roast duck slightly, the roast duck from Ding How is not good at all. However, I'd give Ding How three stars, simply because it gets the job done in satisfying my Chinese food cravings. Though I should try out their vegetarian menu in order to really provide a comprehensive review, the food here is pretty standard. If you're craving Four Seasons on a Monday, Ding How is probably as good as it gets. read more

If not for catered school functions, I would never have been introduced to Ding How and I am so thankful I was! Ding How is a vegetarian's heaven as there is an exceptionally veggie friendly menu with lots of faux meat sources for protein. The veggie chicken meat is actually quite yummy though the veggie beef has never struck my fancy. The veggie beef looks very realistic but doesn't deliver in taste/texture as it tends to be pretty chewy. I cannot comment on the faux seafood, but I would say the chicken is a safe bet. My go to dish (probably thanks to catered events) is the Sweet and Sour Veggie Chicken. The General's Chicken is also good. I cannot comment on service as I have never dined in the restaurant, but take out time for pick up was accurate for me. Keep in mind that rice doesn't automatically come with orders - you have to pay extra for it, so if you're doing take out, it might be worthwhile to just make some rice at home to save you a few dollars. read more

This time I noticed a new very nice website with online ordering. The prices seemed higher so I checked at the restaurant. Sure enough, 25% higher. To make it worse the restaurant never got the order and I had to wait until they made it. Since it was already paid for I didn't have much choice. I normally don't eat Chinese food, but I was craving some hot and sour soup and BBQ pork buns. With a cold and midterms coming up, I wanted to get something quicky, but not too greasy to eat. I yelped a few places and this place was the closest. I called them to order my food to go. At first, I thought $5.95 for 3 pork buns was a little pricey considering I'm use to Bay Area prices where it's buck or so for a pork bun. Nevertheless, I called and placed my order. When I got there, my order was ready. The service is fast and friendly. I waited to get home to check out my food. The servings are huge! The pork buns are very big (the size of a buff guy's fist) so I am not complaining anymore. The hot and sour soup is the perfect remedy for a cold. It will clear up a congestion fast! I've eaten here often for the past 3 years and typically order the beef and broccoli, crab cheese wontons, vegetable deluxe, wonton soup, and sweat and sour chicken. I've tried their lemon chicken but found it to be soggy and disappointing. I love the employees here. I mostly go for take out, but the few times I've dined in have been enjoyable. One young man in particular is very friendly and likes to chat with my group. We feel very welcome there. I lived in San Francisco for over 10 years and since I left the city I have not yet found the Chinese food - the taste I'm looking for. I never went to fancy Chinese restaurant in the city so the hall in the wall type of authentic food is what I'm after. We stumble in this place because we had Mexican food for lunch and it was pretty much next to it. So we ordered some food to go for dinner. The portion is adequate. The food are very tasty. Oh my gosh I found the the taste I'm looking for - the Mongolian beef so amazing could used more spicy to it but my taste buds likes everything burning spicy. Let me start by saying yes, today the outside temperature was 106, after walking in and sitting down I couldn't help but realize I wasn't cooling off, the inside temperature was 85...when I brought it up to the server, she just blew it off and came up with a sorry excuse as to when the outside temperature is so and so....well when I looked at there thermostat, it was set to 85, well no kidding it will be 85 if set at 85. It isn't the greatest Chinese food nor the worst. It has an extensive vegetarian menu which is pretty awesome. The servers are not the friendliest but they do their job. This is my favorite Chinese food restaurant in Davis! My daughters love the cream cheese wontons but I'm partial to the potstickers. For sides I always get the beef chow mein (vegetable chow mein is also good-tons of veggies in it!) and barbecue pork fried rice. My favorite dishes have to be the orange flavored beef, sweet and sour chicken, mu shu pork, and lemon chicken. My husband is a huge fan of the chin jiu chicken. For a kick of spice, Hunan or Kung pao is awesome! The hot tea is a great way to tie the whole meal together. For sit down or take out, I LOVE this place! read more

Overchargers and Tax cheats!! Go Somewhere Else! At least, check your bills VERY CAREFULLY! We are relatively new to Davis and have enjoyed the food at this place, but very soon learned they pad the bill with any number of charges. First, they don't itemize the charges. This makes it easy to add extra orders of rice, charge for something else on the menu, and (when we had our last confrontation with them) overcharge the tax. It was stunning when we went through the bill, item by item, and they couldn't explain why we had certain charges....and they STILL kept adding roughly 10 percent sales tax. The younger member of the staff who usually works up front and tallies the bills disappeared into the kitchen. We had to interact with someone who could/would not explain the bill.
