    Crispy noodles and duck sauce
    Valerie R.

We went to Diner's Haven last Saturday because of all the great reviews. Walked in around 6:30 pm, and only one person was dining in. It was an older woman watching videos on her phone on full volume. The restaurant was warmer than I would have liked, the AC was not fantastic. We ordered drinks, I asked if they had the hot Chinese tea and they said yes. They brought me a cup of what tasted like hot dishwater. They didn't bring any sweeteners. I didn't drink it. The server never asked about it and did charge me for it. My husband ordered a mai tai which he said was fine. I had heard good things about the crab Rangoon, so we ordered those and I asked for the crispy noodles. The crab Rangoon were just ok, and noticeably absent was any sauce to dip them in. The crispy noodles were a bit off, maybe not fried long enough? They were just not as good as they are at other spots, and the duck sauce was sweeter than your average duck sauce. The hot and sour soup was better than average and honestly was the best part of the meal. My husband said his wonton soup was good as well. The meals came out, and I was not impressed. Very small portions of the main meal. For $14.50, I would expect more. The rice was very bland, and it was odd that it had red onions in it. Not a typical Chinese ingredient. I ate two bites and didn't bother with the rest. The chicken with garlic sauce was also fairly bland and the sauce was clumpy and congealed so there was a gelatinous pile on the plate but some of the chicken wasn't covered at all. Too much cornstarch, I'm guessing. The egg roll was fine and was what I ate, but it was not the best I've had. I boxed up pretty much my entire meal and again, the server did not seem to care to ask if anything was wrong and why I hadn't eaten it. I took it home and recooked it myself with additional seasonings, and it was much better! Overall, food was blah, service was blah, and you may have to listen to some lady's videos on blast the whole time if you dine in. I was not impressed, and probably wouldn't have reviewed it, it's just that my experience was such a stark contrast to other reviews, that I wanted to share to ensure people know that not everyone loves it.

I ordered online and picked up this order. I have not been here since this new restaurant took over. It looks beautiful inside the sushi bar the tables everything. There was nobody there on the Sunday early evening. The person at the register was super nice. I took my food home. I used to love the vegetable fried rice here I used to have a lot of flavor and was not dry. Unfortunately, I did not like the vegetable fried rice. I thought the tofu was OK. I would order that again. I might like to eat in and try something else. Overall I thought my experience was OK.

Best Chinese-Japanese spot in Wallingford, no question.Super clean inside, and even the parking lot looks good. Everything I've ordered has been fire -- not one miss. The staff is crazy friendly too. I can totally see this place turning into the go-to spot for everyone in town.

I have been to Diner's Haven 3 times now. While the name does not scream Asian food, inside it is a bright, clean restaurant with ample seating and a sushi bar. Twice we were there for sit down meals, something that had been sorely missed in the area. Wontons in the soup are small and delicate. Pu Pu platter does not come with a heat source, but there is a nice variety of tasty appetizers included. The one thing that makes this restaurant stand out is the quality of the vegetables contained in their dishes. Fresh and crisp. Their fried rice isn't anything special. It doesn't really have much in the way of add-ins. I think there was only peas & corn in it. Their shrimp with mixed vegetables is excellent. Good sized shrimp. The sit down menu includes combinations that come with soup and fried rice with your entree. Don't expect leftovers, if you order a combo. I just wish food was hotter. It was warm at best. We will return.

Great food, big portion for leftovers. This place did not let us down. My daughter even ate her portion, quite the accomplishment!

My friends have been raving about China King for a quite some time. They love their chicken with…read moregarlic sauce dinner combo (with an egg roll and fried or white rice). I was a bit skeptical at first, but one of them owns a Chinese restaurant in San Francisco so I had to believe his word when he said the food here was good. I decided to grab my first take-out from this place tonight and called in that order ahead. The food was ready when I got there in 10 mins! The gentleman was friendly and accommodating when I requested for chili oil as well. The restaurant has tables and chairs so one can actually dine in. However, it's mainly for takeout so a lot of people just come to pick up their food or have it be delivered. There is a large parking lot so not to worry. Aside from good portion I was given, I was impressed by the well-balanced proportions of fried rice and garlic chicken/veggies. Some places like to skimp out on the meat and veggies by giving you more rice, but this was not the case here. The veggies were not overcooked and the chicken was soft and tasted fresh. As for the massive egg roll, it was crispy and had good filling of pork and veggies. FYI my friend said that you can switch out the egg roll for a spring roll. The requested chili oil on the side was a great condiment to the dish since I love spicy food. Lastly, the fortune cookie tasted fresh... I was shocked by the poor reviews below, but I realize that the ownership has changed so I recommend giving China King another try and it will prove its worthiness of the crown (haha). I will definitely come back here again especially during their lunch hours with great prices!

I called ahead which was a good thing considering there are only two very small tables in the restaurant. My order was hot and ready upon arrival. The gent behind the counter was very friendly and when I asked if they deliver, he said yes, but call first to be sure they have someone on hand to do it. Fair enough. My meal was very, very good, and not at all salty like you can find in many Asian restaurants I've had food from. The chicken rice soup was just that; a flavorful broth, with a decent amount of chicken and lots of rice. The shrimp with vegetables was a very generous portion with a good amount of shrimp and plenty of clearly fresh, crunchy-cooked vegetables, also not salty. It came with a good portion of sticky white rice. The other part of my order was their "house special fried rice". Again, very well prepared and flavorful, with shrimp, pork, chicken, and veggies in it. I'll be certain to return or have delivery next time I'm in the mood for Chinese food. It was a very good meal!

The food is always good and I like their sesame chicken the best! The sauce they use for the sesame chicken is always good, it's not too sweet. There is no more seating I the restaurant since Covid. But the place seems clean. I like that they have a table set up for all the sauces that is needed. Some Chinese places either give you too little sauces or too much. I love picking up and bringing it to the park near by.

It was a humble reminder that you don't need to go to a culinary destination to find good food. Cheshire Connecticut may not be known for its food scene, however, I found Sakana was a genuine diamond in the rough. My expectations were admittedly low going in. My level of skepticism is always high when I see the "Asian Bistro" moniker, as it is frequently used for restaurants to try to appeal to the masses at the expense of quality by having a "jack-of-all-trades" menu that lacks the technical intricacies and mastery required for specific dishes. Additionally, these establishments tend to follow a "cookie-cutter" menu and offer the same boring dishes you can find at every other Asian Bistro. Even when initially walking towards the restaurant, I had my doubts. The exterior of Sakana honestly looked more like a clinic than a restaurant. Once I saw the menu however, my skepticism shifted towards optimism. For a local bistro, they feature a surprisingly extensive wine and cocktail menu, including premium sake options. I was particularly impressed to find toro on the menu; although it's undoubtedly becoming more of a trend in Connecticut, I was nevertheless happy to see it offered at Sakana as well. Overall I liked their sushi selections and everything I ordered was well-prepared and tasted fresh. We ordered a chicken and broccoli for our daughter and found the chicken tender and broccoli perfectly cooked. That may not sound impressive to those reading, but you'll be surprised how many restaurants fail to execute this baseline dish correctly. The service, although pleasant, was probably the only "weak link" of our experiences here. The quality of service was noticeably inconsistent between our two visits, and they would benefit vastly from having a more reliable and experienced front-of-house team to match the execution coming from the kitchen and sushi bar. Despite this minor gripe, Sakana was a standout. As long as I'm in the area, they will definitely be among the top of my list of places to eat!

So friendly. Is the food exceptional? To me no, but my parents enjoy it. Tonight we started with crab rangoons. Pretty good. Sauce on the side not very exciting. A chili sauce would be better. I got a sushi roll with White tuna inside and cooked shrimp on top and wasabi mayo. I forget the name of the roll but it was better than the two times I've ordered takeout. Miso soup was also good. Their soup bowls are in the shape of a heart which is super cute. Dad got some sort of a mixed protein dish with brown sauce (had shrimp, chicken and beef). Mom got the chicken and garlic sauce. They both got fried rice on the side. I tried it and it was very bland. Dad also got a salad with his meal and the ginger dressing was not very good. Red coloring to it. Usually ginger dressing is more on the orange side. Dad also got the Malaysian chicken coconut soup to start and it could use a bit more flavor. Was a bit watery. Mom loved her sweet and sour soup. Nice that this place is 5 minutes away. Cheshire needs more restaurants. Def not my fav restaurant in town though. Food to me is just ok.
