There were 8 of us. The place was nice: clean, well lit, not too loud (for a performance based cooking experience). Not super high end, but the entire experience reflected that. We got seated right away (we had reservations). Drinks arrived quickly (BTW: large tropical cocktails were very inexpensive, IIRC between $6 and $10) and we all ordered from the hibachi menu. The chef put on a great performance and we were all enjoying it. Dinners were ready quickly (another BTW: a combo steak & shrimp meal was only $28 (Dec 2025). ALL 8 of us had enough for our lunches the next day. I don't remember if they have dessert on the menu but none of us had room. I often rate a restaurant on the cleanliness of their restrooms and the men's room looked like it was cleaned and maintained multiple times a day. They are in a small strip mall and have plenty of parking in front and back. I can't comment on their sushi menu; I didn't order from it.

Cheshire Connecticut may not be known for its food scene, however, I found Sakana was a genuine diamond in the rough. My expectations were admittedly low going in. My level of skepticism is always high when I see the "Asian Bistro" moniker, as it is frequently used for restaurants to try to appeal to the masses at the expense of quality by having a "jack-of-all-trades" menu that lacks the technical intricacies and mastery required for specific dishes. Additionally, these establishments tend to follow a "cookie-cutter" menu and offer the same boring dishes you can find at every other Asian Bistro. Even when initially walking towards the restaurant, I had my doubts. The exterior of Sakana honestly looked more like a clinic than a restaurant. Once I saw the menu however, my skepticism shifted towards optimism. For a local bistro, they feature a surprisingly extensive wine and cocktail menu, including premium sake options. I was particularly impressed to find toro on the menu; although it's undoubtedly becoming more of a trend in Connecticut, I was nevertheless happy to see it offered at Sakana as well. Overall I liked their sushi selections and everything I ordered was well-prepared and tasted fresh. We ordered a chicken and broccoli for our daughter and found the chicken tender and broccoli perfectly cooked. That may not sound impressive to those reading, but you'll be surprised how many restaurants fail to execute this baseline dish correctly. The service, although pleasant, was probably the only "weak link" of our experiences here. The quality of service was noticeably inconsistent between our two visits, and they would benefit vastly from having a more reliable and experienced front-of-house team to match the execution coming from the kitchen and sushi bar. Despite this minor gripe, Sakana was a standout. As long as I'm in the area, they will definitely be among the top of my list of places to eat!

The menu rotates with the seasons and the freshest ingredients which we greatly appreciated and it shows in the tastes. Our seasonal selections that we ordered included Hokkaido scallop and octopus carpaccio with ikura and seaweed and monkfish karaage. The carpaccio had the perfect components to complement each other. The monkfish karaage fully came together between the lemon and the side of pickled radish as well. We also ordered house made fresh tofu and added uni. The staff mentioned "oh it's perfect, it's uni season" which made my day. It was so delicious and my husband who normally doesn't like uni even noticed how fresh it was.
