Okay. Yes, sushi. Pretty decent, better than Pittsburgh-standard, that was why we originally went there today; on a recommendation from someone else about sushi. Solidly decent and I'd recommend them over other places I've eaten here, for sure! However, aside from the menu shown on their website, we were given a grilled skewers menu (mostly in Chinese, but the "combos" are bilingual Chinese/English, so if you don't read Chinese, use that to cross-reference). We decided on a mix of nigiri, American rolls, and the BBQ combo B. First off, I hope if you order their BBQ you are not afraid of a little spice. I think these might be Szechuan in origin? Some of the skewers were a little too spicy for our toddler, but between the beef, lamb, chicken, and fishcake, they were all solidly tasty. I'm fine with some heat, so I thought the balance was just fine. Secondly, if you order sushi and BBQ, //eat the sushi first//. The skewers are strongly flavored with salt and spice, and will tend to overpower the sushi flavors. I think if you're ordering just BBQ, it's a good idea to also order some side dishes and rice, since you just get the skewers in the order (and B also comes with a plate of heavily garlicky roasted eggplant). As we had sushi rolls, that felt redundant, so we didn't order extra rice, but I do think plain rice would have been a good compliment to the savory/spicy flavors. Eating the eggplant was slightly challenging at first but once I figured you could rip strips of it with chopsticks and roll them up like a rich garlicky eggplant roll, I was sold. It's garnished with a few peppers and cilantro leaves among the massive pile of oiled garlic, so for the heat-averse be aware of that too. As a garlic fan, I loved it! I'm looking at reviews that only mention sushi, so don't know if this is a new addition to their repertoire. After eating there today, I've put this on my list of restaurants to return to for both sushi *and* BBQ! read more

When I first saw this place I was a little skeptical but I have to say that after multiple trips back this is easily one of our favorite places in town now. The fish is extremely fresh and the food is all excellent. It's obvious that these guys care about serving a quality product and go out of their way to make everything a good experience. Also, great that they are BYOB. To summarize, myseven year old now says that, " this is my favorite place in Pittsburgh." Dear lord this place is wonderful. It's hard to find, it feels camouflaged in a sea of squirrel hill storefronts. Worth it. REALLY good sushi and service. This place used to be 15 degrees Fahrenheit but it's since switched to Diners 2+1. I was skeptical when I first walked in, since you have to place your order and pay at a counter first before you sit down. My bf and I decided to go with the Benny roll, the tricolor roll, and the sushi sandwich for our main. We also got tuna tataki as a starter. The tuna came out first. I'm not a huge fan of tuna tataki in general so I thought it was ok. A little spicy. The presentation was visually appealing though (can be seen in photos). One of the staff very frequently came to checkup on us to make sure everything was ok. He was very kind, attentive, and knowledgeable. He even brought us a complimentary fried squid dish! I'm not sure if it was on the menu, but I suggest they put it on because it was very good. It tasted like calamari and certainly better than some that I've had before. Then the main rolls came out. Again, the presentation was gorgeous. I almost didn't want to use the sauce because I didn't want to ruin the presentation. The sushi sandwich, a "let's try something new" decision, was unexpectedly tasty. It's ingredients made it soft yet firm and I was delighted at its combination of flavors. The tricolor roll was my favorite as I could definitely taste the freshness of the fish. The fish (salmon, tuna, and red snapper) seemed to melt in my mouth. The Benny roll had a nice smoky flavor and crunch from the shrimp tempura. Our waiter who revealed himself to be the chef told us about how he makes every shrimp tempura fresh to ensure their best quality. I was very happy with the rolls, they were better than almost every other Pittsburgh sushi place I have been to. At the end I found myself pleasantly full but still wanting more. The service was great, the sushi was fresh, and I would definitely come back here. I was even thinking of returning the next day! One of the few things I miss most in Pittsburgh is quality sushi. I usually go to Sushi Fuku to quickly satisfy my cravings. But if you have time, I highly suggest that you come to Diners 2+1 instead! It's very new (apparently it only opened 3 weeks ago) so I admit there are things to improve upon. For instance, the inside is very small with limited seating. Only one other family was there when I went, so this wasn't a problem for me but I can see how this can become an issue if it becomes more popular. Additionally, there was only one cashier and one sushi chef at this time so the food may come out slowly if there are larger orders (again, this wasn't a problem for me during this visit). Let me start by saying that the service here is AMAZING. We ordered the spicy tuna roll, dragon roll, and chirashi bowl. The man at the register gave such good recommendations for food and was so friendly. When we sat down, we received a plate with two fried squid on sticks (that I don't even think is on the menu) and it was delicious! Additionally, the quality of the food is so good for the price. We were told that the shrimp tempura is not frozen and reheated, but freshly fried in the restaurant after the order is put in. And oh my goodness, it did not disappoint! The tempura may have been my favorite part of this place, because it tasted so authentic and there was so much shrimp meat! I also think the fish was very fresh and flavorful, although the spicy tuna wasn't as spicy as I would have liked. We liked the food so much that even though we were stuffed, we ordered two more hand rolls and we received even more tempura pieces on the side for free! Usually, I think cheaper sushi places cover up their lack of quality with yummy sauces. But this place was definitely good even without being drowned in teriyaki sauce and spicy mayo. On top of the amazing food and service, it was pretty affordable for sushi in Pittsburgh (similar prices to Sushi Fuku for higher quality). You also pay before you eat so you don't have to pay tip! First things first: we had a bit of trouble finding this place. It's in the old 15° Fahrenheit space but the old sign is still up and lit. They do have a window decal, but it's easy to miss if you're too preoccupied with the old sign or are unfamiliar with the area. It was worth a little confusion to find it though. The sushi here is excellent - some of the best I've had this year, and it's beautifully presented. They also have poke bowls and a few appetizers. We tried the spicy cold noodle and it was strange in a good guy (and still delicious). It was dead at 8:30 on a Friday night so I can't attest to what service during a busy time would be (we were well taken care of but were the only people there). They bring out a cast iron pot over a burner, heaped full of veggies, mushrooms, and flavorful tofu. The broth is incredibly flavorful and gets more and more flavorful with every addition of meat. I understand that the child probably won't eat the sushi, but it would be nice to have a place to put them while Mom and Dad eat theirs. There's not a ton of seating, but there's enough. We had 7 people and they have a big table at the front in the window. If you had any more than 8 people, you'd probably have to sit separately. My husband and I split 3 different rolls and all were delicious. Many people in our group tried various bowls, and no complaints were to be had.
