Will not come here again. Dimes is known for their healthy food, but I believe that this place is incredibly overhyped and overpriced for subpar food and portion sizes. Even the service isn't the greatest. We had the love toast, the carob acai bowl, the berry acai bowl, and the encino man, and I think everyone was disappointed with what they had. The acai bowls did not taste fresh, it felt as if it was kept in the refrigerator for several days before serving it. There are so many tastier, healthy food places around NYC that I could have gone to. While the menu seems expansive, it's pretty much the same ingredients used over and over again in a way that isn't entirely new. read more

They have style. I'll give them that. From the decor to the dishes to the tea infuser, everything about this place is cute x chic. The food was not particularly flavorful, but it was healthy and fresh. I ordered the earth tacos. I liked that the portion wasn't too large. Just two tacos with a little slaw was the perfect amount for a light lunch. My friend and I also ordered the rooibos chai and sencha teas, which we enjoyed. The service was mixed. We came at the end of lunch, and while our server was super nice about fitting in our order before the kitchen closed, the other server was clearly stressed. She came around and pressed for our order (not realizing our own server had nicely said we could take a minute), and was unhappy that we were taking too long to sign the check (even though we had already signed it and she just hadn't noticed). I get that everyone gets stressed (and she said the kitchen was pressuring her), but the way she showed it just seemed unnecessary. Our own server was so much nicer about everything, and I wish we'd only dealt with our server, so I could make this a 4-star review. I still would come back if I were in the area. No idea why there are so many poor reviews for Dimes. We had a couple of guys in our group who were skeptical about Dimes at first - but by the end they were fans. The food was delicious, healthy and inexpensive (for a NYC brunch). What more could you ask for? It's a tiny shop in the middle of Chinatown, and we had a 10-20 min wait when we came Saturday around 1 pm. They're pretty flexible with substituting things in your dish if you have any dietary restrictions (ie no carbs). We got: Quinoa Bowl - This was probably the best thing we got. I didn't eat this but my friend really enjoyed this dish and it looked delicious. I had a lot of order envy. Also the beet vinaigrette was very unique and delicious. Fall Hash - The Brussels sprouts were delicious (cooked well without being greasy) and the black rice was a nice complement. The fried egg on top was perfect. The only reason I wish I had gotten the quinoa bowl instead was because there was really only one flavor in the bowl (that of the spicy sauce) and I wished there was more diversity (as there was in the quinoa bowl). read more

4-ish stars for the food, 2-ish stars for everything else about this too trendy/too hipster to care about anything, somewhat larger but still tiny new location of the popular white girl hangout, Dimes. Go for brunch, and you'll see the throngs of skinny girls and their guy friends they're not interested in, in their skinny jeans, waiting outside for the hour or so waits. If that sounds appealing to you, then put your name down and go get a donut and/or cookie from the awesome Pies-N-Thighs two doors down while you wait. They won't text you or anything once your table's ready, so return and stick around the front. You'll be crammed in pretty closely into one of the small tables, and then you'll wait quite a bit more for some food to finally come out: - Tartine ($11) For an idea of what this asparagus, ricotta, sunny side up egg and chili on a crispy piece of toast is like, just open Instagram and you'll see something just like it very quickly. It was actually pretty tasty though, and not as boring as a typical avocado toast. - Carob Acai Bowl ($9) Next please (I tried, but sorry, I don't get these). - Sayonara Summer Tacos ($8 for 2) These were delicious. Make sure you say yes when asked if you want sausage or bacon in these. We opted for sausage, which was a great addition, and made for a great taco though the tortillas themselves were inferior compared to most of the good tacos in the city. - Breakfast Sandwich ($6.50) This is definitely the thing to get, and a solid bargain for an excellent sandwich at a low price. They sandwich scrambled eggs, avocado, cheddar and hot sauce between two delicious pieces of soft bread. Add some bacon to this one for a very satisfying option. I can't tell who here looked like they were more annoyed with life - the stressed out models that made the trek from Bushwick to eat their salads, or the somewhat rude, very indifferent waitstaff. Either way, it was pretty uncomfortable, both emotionally and physically, especially after the two-top next to us was cleared to make way for a family of 5. If you're too cool for school and/or moved to NYC from the Midwest and/or are living off your parents' money, you might really love this place. Okay I don't want to be rude but this was a real bad experience. First off we came into this crammed space got seated in the booth section which smelled. We kindly asked to move and they agreed on upon request. We first asked if we could pick our spots since we wanted the cute pink table near the window. But ended up in the blue crammed window. No complaints there. But after ordering our drinks came. Can I just say how horrible the ice latte tastes? It was a mixture of bubble gum and water tasting drink. Absolutely not worth it. I personally ordered an iced coffee which wasn't so bad. Then our food came. No complaints there expect for the facts my Moroccan poached eggs came rubbery! I asked if my egg could be a bit runny and the lady waitress was real nice about it and said sure. It came and the eggs were just awful. Though the squash and cheese was perfectly made the star of the dish sort of failed to impress me. Everything else including the breakfast sandwich and the blt was real good. Another compliant. We waited maybe about 20 minutes for a table, we were okay with that at first before suddenly I see these two girls. A friend of the waiter probably, come in and take the seats we asked for when we've waited longer. Okay we were still fine by then. But the service here was awfully slow and not enough waiters outside tending to us. And can I just put in that the atmosphere wasn't as hip or cool as everyone explained. One they don't have sugar nor do they have salt. So if I was to put a bit of sugar in my drink they gave me these large rocks of pink sugar. And two the place was crowded and the music was awfully loud. Will not come back at all your better off spending your time at the coffee shop next door which actually serves better than this place. Another complaint. The waiter which I don't know what his name was, had the audacity to comment on of the photos my friend has posted saying we haven't given enough tips. But in fact we gave more than enough. If your reading this, I'm sorry if you didn't count properly or something else happened but we gave at least 13$ tips for the 57$ lunch we had. You know that whole all-day cafe trend with grain bowls, and Ettore Sottsass-esque furniture, and bone broth, and beautiful people having heart-to-hearts at 3 pm on a weekday about how they want to move to LA? Dimes started that whole thing. And as the acai bowl, blond-wood movement has spread across the city, Dimes has grown with it, with a to-go space, cosmetics line, and bigger restaurant. I'd been reasonably pleased with Dimes when I visited a year or so ago with my parents-- solid healthy food, spacey staff, and an artsy but parent-friendly crowd. After a lovely class at Sky Ting a couple blocks away, I decided to revisit for a late lunch on Sunday. At 3 pm, it was half full, and I was able to take a table by my lonesome. The space is still cute and quirky, with the sloped ceiling and brightly-colored table edges, but it could use a little TLC. It's a lively atmosphere at most any time of day. The bathroom is super cool and they have great smelling candles available for sale. Stutter #1: I didn't get a menu. I sat there for 5 minutes. I made dramatic eye contact with a waitress, who obliviously smiled back. I had to wave her over and ask for a menu, though she was appropriately apologetic. The menu has some tough choices, partially because everything sounds good and partially because there are a lot of dish overlaps. If you want eggs and avocado, or kale and black rice, you'll face a plethora of options. It's ridiculous (in a good way) how many vegan options they have. They do also have some not-so-healthy options like pork soba and bacon. I went with the power bowl ($13) with black rice, black beans, kale, salsa, orange, and avocado. It came out reasonably quickly (10-15 minutes), but unfortunately it was a soup and not a bowl. The black beans were in a semi-refried, liquidy form, which wouldn't have been a problem except that they was an equivalent amount of green salsa. It makes for a pretty presentation, but it completely overwhelmed the rest of the contents of the bowl. Everything else tasted fresh but not out of the ordinary. The hot sauce had good flavor but there was just so much of it that it's all I could taste (and the spice factor wasn't negligible). It was a big portion, and filled me up through the rest of the night, but I would prefer to eat my meal, not drink it. Stutter #2: My waitress took my finished plate, asked me if I wanted anything else (no, thanks!), and glided off. And then I sat there, for 10 minutes. I wasn't in a rush, but I kept looking around for my waitress, who was just kind of hanging out. Again, made theatrically confused eye contact and she just smiles back at me, which I initially took as her realizing she forgot the check. But another 5 minutes passed and I had to wave her over... and she seemed surprised that I was asking for the check. Girl what? Dimes gets a lot of complaints about service for staff being insidery and cold to "nobodies", but I didn't really get that feeling. There were groups there that clearly knew the staff and they were chatty with each other, but that wasn't my problem-- staff was just weirdly incompetent. My quick stop for lunch turned into an hour visit for no real reason. Maybe I'm being overly sensitive (if I were dining with others, it wouldn't be as noticeable), but seems like some basic stuff. I came here on a crowded Sunday morning and had to wait about 40 minutes. The place itself isn't too large so plan on there being a wait on the weekends. I did however appreciate the pink décor of the restaurant. I ordered the Berry Acai Bowl for $9 and was slightly disappointed. Being a California native sets a high standard for any other acai bowls I try. This bowl was pretty small and not filling compared to the bowls I could get back at home. The acai had a liquid consistency, and I prefer a thicker acai blend. The seeds that were sprinkled on top also didn't particularly suit my taste and didn't complement the acai bowl in my opinion. For the steep price of $9, I did not think it was worth the price at all. 3.5 stars (extra .5 for the wonderfully healthy menu). I had my reservations about coming here for dinner (no pun intended - but really, they don't even take reservations). It was just okay. Underwhelming. I've known about Dimes for a while and have only heard it mentioned/pictured/raved about as a breakfast/brunch spot. This should absolutely be on your list if you're looking for a clean, healthy meal - regardless of the time of day. Dimes has that down and they do it pretty well. I just didn't leave completely satisfied. Came here on a Saturday night around 8pm and ran into a wait of about 20 minutes (ended up being more like 10-15). As others have mentioned, the space is tiny and very niche. A few booths, some awkwardly-organized tables, and a small bar. There's definitely a bit of a hipster vibe here, but it didn't feel at all aggressive to me. Trust me, if something seemed too "cool" or "alternative", I'd be the first to call it out because I'm simply not either of those things. Maybe it's because I'm a white girl who loves kale and quinoa and sweet potatoes and spinach and goji berries and #basicfood, but regardless I didn't feel too mainstream to eat here, as others have alluded to. We decided to get a couple of cocktails to start. I suppose it just seems natural for me to get a drink with dinner, but if I could go back in time I'd definitely pass on alcohol here. We both got the gin spritzer (can't remember the actual name of the drink) and it was forgettable at best. You don't want a $12 drink to be forgettable, especially when you're already surrounded by plenty of battle-tested cocktail spots. So if you want a drink here, maybe stick with wine. For food, we started with the Stuffed Dates ($5 - couscous/apricot/herbs/scallion). Hands down the healthiest stuffed date preparation I've ever had. These were really yummy (see accompanying food porn picture) and I'd definitely recommend if you're looking for a small bite before your meal. Speaking of ordering food in addition to your entree... ...the portions here were pretty small. We ordered: -Spiced Quinoa ($14 - chickpeas, broccolini, kale, pickled mushroom, beet) This dish is just one big pile of superfoods. Pretty much my ideal meal, if I'm in fitness mode. The quinoa sits as the centerpiece with the various sides surrounding it. If I'm being completely honest, the dish lacked flavor. It was perfectly fine, just didn't have any sort of oomph to hang my hat (and my dime - GET IT??) on. That said, this dish is pretty much exactly what I'd serve myself if I had access to a health food buffet. Tons of nutrients and a good variety of ingredients. It's also very well-priced if you're on a budget. Definitely make use of the sauce that's served on the side - mixing it in sooner might've made for a more memorable dish! -Striped Bass ($19 - green curry, salmon roe, baby corn, patty pan squash) I didn't end up trying the bass, but for 19 bucks (I realize bass is usually more expensive than this, but still), the amount of food was really disappointing. My friend was still hungry after cleaning his plate and ended up picking at my chickpeas (I promise that's not an innuendo) after I finished eating. Again, he had no real problem with it, but you never want to leave your patrons hungry after an entree. I will say that the service here was great. Our food came out a bit too slowly for our liking, but the folks who took care of us on Saturday were incredibly friendly and hospitable overall. I would come to this cafe every day if I could. The food is so healthy and creative! I came for lunch on a weekday and it was pretty packed. Luckily, we were able to get a table for 2 without waiting though. I was so happy they were still serving breakfast during lunch time! We ordered a little too much food (but happily so): Matcha Buttermilk Pancakes, Breakfast Sandwich, and the Veggie Burger. The Matcha Buttermilk Pancakes were the perfect balance between fluffy and dense. They weren't too sweet because of the matcha. The granola crunchies and blueberry compote made it even better! Very pretty too, with flowers on top. The Breakfast Sandwich is a classic with a kick from the jalapeños and hot sauce. If you're looking for a spin on a typical breakfast item, order this. The Veggie Burger was one of the best I've ever had! The patty seemed to be made from some combination of chickpeas and beans - it was seasoned perfectly! The sweet potato fries were only okay, but this is offset by the bomb burger! The food came relatively fast, so you could stop by here if you had a 45-60 min block of time for lunch. Also, upon paying the server (who also dabbled as the bartender) threw my partner's card on the table and left. I have been here previously but on my most recent visit I feel that the food and the service is very much lacking. It is very hard to get the attention of a server who can take your order. I ordered a carob acai bowl that had lots of hard frozen chunks of ice, which was hard and tasteless, so I was very disappointed in my meal. My cappuccino was very burnt and even adding a few cubes of raw sugar did not make it palatable. My least favorite thing is that if you use a credit card you will incur an additional 2.5% charge on your bill. I did not realize this because I had given my card and asked for the check and then only after my card was processed and my bill was brought over did I notice that. I think it should be stated in bold on the menu that they would prefer cash payments or that an additional fee is incurred by using credit card, which is the most common type of payment nowadays. read more

I have been wanting to come here since, we moved into the neighborhood. I am a complete sucker for local, artisinal foods that are simple and delicious. This type of food is being categorized as Californian. It's salads and health conscious. There's drinks with bee pollen and even homemade almond milk. They focus on three of my favorite words when it comes to food, SEASONAL, LOCAL and ORGANIC. And maybe that labels me as a NW nerd or a west coast elitist but hey what's so bad about caring about your environment and your body. They use New York established coffee company Cafe Integral. The company focuses on Nicaraguan coffee and roast the beans in small batches in Upper West Side. I ordered the two eggs any style. I like my eggs over medium. It came with a peppery, green salad, roasted baby tomatoes cut into halves and one piece of 7 grain toast. I of course had to pay extra and get the side of avocado. The meal comes with juice of the day, coffee or tea. I went for the juice that was a mixture of pineapple, carrot and lemon. The mixture was reminiscent of grapefruit. The meal was $12 and then the $2.50 for a side of avocado and additional coffee for $2.75. So it adds up after tax and tip. The eggs were absolutely incredible. The yolks were rich and delicious. I love mixing them with a bit of the greens. the roasted, juicy tomatoes and the avocados and a squeeze of the hot sauce. Oh yeah...the hot sauce. I gave it a try and found it absolutely delectable. At one point it got stuck. And I squeezed extra hard. And yes it exploded and I looked like Stephen King's Carrie. Not good. Not good at all. I might have even ruined the rest of the bars experience. It went everywhere. Kind of a nightmare. Tip: if hot sauce gets stuck don't squeeze too hard. The big thumbs down is there is always a wait. They don't take phone numbers. The counter is considered part of the wait list. The volume is insane. You will not be having a great conversation here. There are a lot of people, from hip kids to parents to bridge and tunnel. After hearing many people rave about this restaurant, I was excited to finally try Dimes for dinner one night. I expected a long wait, but for two on a Friday we didn't have to wait longer than 15 minutes. The actual restaurant is small, a bit crowded,and uncomfortable. And as you've seen from many previous reviews the service is a bit slow. Despite these negatives, I have nothing bad to say about my dish. I ordered the "big salad" which had squash, grapes, pomegranate seeds and a delicious dressing. The salad was fresh, filling and tasty. My friend ordered the Caesar salad, which wasn't so good. Although not a traditional Caesar, the dressing was bland and the ingredients a bit disappointing in variety. While Dimes did not blow my expectations away, I plan to go back to try the other menu items like the tuna nori roll and pittaya bowl. If they are anywhere as good as my salad, I can overlook the slow service and not so comfy dining room. read more

This place is retro and cozy. I would almost compare the decor as a dentist office in the 90's. It's funky but delicious. Very solid healthy food place! I came here with a friend for dinner on a Friday, and they were able to accommodate us even though we were about 20-30 min late from our reservation. The place is very cute, decorated with colorful tables, and menus to match with horoscopes printed on the back. It's not vegan/vegetarian but definitely friendly to those diets, and I felt that the clientele definitely looked to match. I already forgot what dish I got (I think the menu may be seasonal) but I have a picture of it! Lots of veggies (fresh, pickled), black rice, and overall quite light in reasonable portions. My friend got the salmon, which looked great and also at a healthy portion. Also they had complimentary sparkling water, which suited us both very well as we had just come back from #abroad! My only complaints would be to add (more vigorous) AC, as it was boiling hot that day, and perhaps the prices were a tad high. I had a summer salad, which was pretty average, and I found it lacked dressing so it tasted kind of bland. We just wanted a quick simple lunch while we were in les, but we thought that they close for few hours after lunch- before starting dinner. My boyfriend wanted to buy new shoes first, so we went to Labor skate shop right across the street and the guys working there told us to go and give it a try. We got lucky and they were still seating people at 3pm. We had to wait for about 10 minutes until we got seated. The place is tiny looking with a small bar and empty walls. You definitely don't see a place like that very often and I personally liked it. The menu is small and simple, however you get a lot of options. We've tried the corn bread with lavender spread, which was dairy free! I enjoyed it, although it tasted nothing like a typical corn bread. I highly highly highly recommend the BLT sandwich. When I say it was the best BLT I've ever tried, it doesn't do the justice. It was just enough of everything. Enough bacon, enough mayo, enough veggies, and it comes with avocado! No extra $2 for a quarter of an avocado. It just really impressed me. It was hard to eat since the sandwich was big, so I recommend using fork and a knife. Served with a salad on a side. My boyfriend tried the steak with a salad and he really enjoyed it as well. All in all, we spent about $40 and had a really good time. Service was great and everyone was friendly. Good breakfast/brunch food, but somewhat pricey -- not sure that it's a good value meal. A 3.5 star! I came here on to catch up with an old friend. RESTAURANT: The decor has a simple, aesthetic; a lot of smooth, organic shapes spruced up with pops of rich, contrasting color. It was a noticeably tight space -- one could say "nook like" -- and packed with narrow tables and chairs. SERVICE: Our service was normal. They were definitely busy, but all our needs were taken care of. FOOD: We ordered the Magic Toast ($8), the Dos Tacos ($9), and a side of avocado ($2.50). The *Magic Toast* was incredible. The creaminess of the goat cheese complemented the grape compote on top, and the toast was topped with a couple chunks of refreshingly juicy fruit. A bit sad that it was only one piece of toast for $8, but the interesting flavor combos made it worth it. I'm a huge fan of goat cheese in general, and I was still intrigued by the way it was used relative to the other flavors in this dish! *Dos Tacos* was underwhelming. The scrambled eggs inside were of a good creaminess, interjected by the juicy tomato and salsa. It was a bit bland, and I felt like a stereotypical breakfast taco or burrito. Like something I could make at home, but not in a good way. Two standard tacos for $9 did not feel like a good value. IN SUM: I'd def consider coming back here for more of their toast. Looking at other reviews, it seems that the Love Toast is also popular -- so it may be that Dimes does a good job on their sweet and fruity dishes, rather than their savory. read more

I came here as I was in the area and had been wanting to check it out. It was packed when I arrived on a Saturday, so I sat at the very tiny bar while pursuing the menu. I got the earth tacos, and they were okay--nothing to write home about. The service at the bar was decent, but could have been better in my opinion. Surprisingly mediocre food here and extremely slow service, though in a cute place. I came here to meet friend for a Sunday brunch. I arrived around 11:30am and it already got very crowded. Food-wise, I got Soupy Salad and it was surprisingly weird and not delicious. I came here half a year ago and didn't remember the food to be that unpleasant. The soupy-salad is basically a miso soup with tons of scallion and mushroom and on top, there are 4 pieces of lettuce and a poached egg. It is EXTREMELY spicy with bird's eye chili and the experience of consuming that was unpleasant at all. Maybe I just ordered the wrong food... Besides mediocre food, the service was also super slow. We asked for check multiple times and it came after 10 min waiting. The place gets crowded easily and you don't have a lot of space to move around or stretch your arms so be prepared. Still, I think I will give this place another shot since I had positive experience before and believe that I just made the wrong food choice or came during an extremely busy time. It also seems that they change menu constantly so I would come back and try something new next time. This place takes credit card. read more

The food at Dimes is more interesting than your usual healthy cafe/brunch place, although somehow still not particularly memorable. I've been here for brunch and had the matcha buttermilk pancakes, the winter mash, and the huevo kathmandu. They were all good, but I'm always slightly bitter I'm not eating the breakfast burrito from their sister location a block away. Actually, in all aspects I prefer Dimes Deli to Dimes the restaurant -- Dimes Deli is quieter, less crowded (despite being much smaller), and has better service. And they have the breakfast burrito. read more

This was one of the best meals I have had. We were hungry after hitting up the Van Gogh Exhibit on Pier 36. Dimes is a few blocks away. It had dining in the street and it was the perfect weather for outside. It is a very unassuming place. The meal was like eating at an upscale restaurant but everything served on metal plates. I loved that there wasn't a lot on the menu but certainly enough. The salmon was perfect and my wife had the pulled pork which was also fantastic. But it was one of those fancy meals with the purée and fancy stuff on the plate. The perfect amount of food. There was room to eat their delicious desserts. Every bite was more delicious than the last. I was so impressed by the laid back but hard working staff. I wish I could remember our server's name, she was super cool and sweet. The staff is so kind, and so willing to answer questions. My açaí bowl came out very quickly & was simple and delicious. I loved the grab and go window, it's perfect for a quick bite to start your day. It was super busy and other orders looked delicious as they passed by while I sat on their benches. It was crowded but half our 20 minute wait for the table was because the waitstaff was snarky and slow and seemed lazy. But we committed to it. The food was great (lemon herb risotto) and the green curry mussels were some of the best I've ever had. But the service just took away from it all. After reading other reviews on Dimes I feel torn because I did not have the same experience the other customers/yelpers had at Dimes. I went to Dimes for a brunch/lunch and was not disappointed. The interior of the restaurant was one of my favorite aspects of Dimes. It was accented with different colors that reminded me of the 70s or possibly Palm Springs. The bathroom was also super cute! There was Santal in a little dish by the bathroom and a bar that I believe was also serving food. For our brunch/lunch we had the summer hash (without the egg & added salmon) and the Carob Acai Bowl. I also had a coffee with oat milk. All of it was so delicious and flavorful. I wish I could have tried everything on the menu! The waiters were sweet and helpful. read more
