Meh. Four of us went here Saturday night, Jan. 5. 2 of the 4 salads were rancid. The eggplant special appetizer was barely cooked, the eggplant slices were hard, not soft. My ossobucco was tough and dried out. The mussels were good though. Our waitress was pleasant. I have not tried the pizza although I hear it's very, very good. It's hard to find good pizza west of where I reside. I did have the breaded chicken cutlet sandwich and it was awesome! Fresh bread which looks as though it's baked on the premise. Juicy chicken and fresh ingredients. Had dinner here last night after not being here for about a year. Saturday's are always busy in Berkeley Heights at any of the restaurants and tonight was no different We split an appetizer of a Cesar salad that was very lack luster My wife ordered the Veal Parm which is usually a lock at this place. But not tonight. The sauce had that burned taste to it that you get when you reheat something in a pan I ordered a rib eye steak and I should have know something when another diner came up to me and told me hers was horrible I ordered mine medium rare and was more well done then medium The cut of meat was about 1/2" thick and did not taste like a rib eye to me I told the waiter that the steak was way over cooked and was way overpriced for a $34 entree. Well I guess that went on deaf ears I could have went around the corner to Stop and Shop and bought a tomahawk rib eye for half the price and I would have had a better meal This may be the last time we dine here in a long time. There are so many better choices in Berkeley Heights to choose from Sorry Sal. You have to step up your game! read more

We went to Dimaio's during restaurant month with a party of 6. Got our table right away and the waitress took our orders pretty fast. She came back 1/2 hour later to tell us they ran out of veal and 5 of us had to order something else off the price fixed menu. Then-it took over 2 hours for us to get any food. They provided us with our appetizers before our salad. When one person asked what was taking so long and that a table that came in after us already had food the manager said it was because they ordered off the regular menu. That should make no difference. Very disappointed and not sure if I will be going back anytime soon. read more

Went on a Friday evening, arriving at 5pm. We were the first customers. No reservation either. Sat at a table near the back wall. Asked for a wine list, was told they are BYOB. No problem, two liquor stores, 100 yards either direction. I bought a bottle of Chianti Classico and returned to the restaurant. We did not order appetizers, just went directly to dinner. I had an order of pasta with shrimp, crab and scallops. It was beyond delicious! And the focaccia bread with dinner is excellent. We also split an order of the lamb shank. It was a bit dry, but the sauce/flavor enhanced the entrée. Ended the meal with a chocolate cannoli. It was the best I've ever eaten. Great pastry! Our waitress was absolutely the best!!! She kept us entertained as well as brought us food. The place started filling up about half way through our meal. By the time we left, it was packed. Definitely a local's restaurant. When folks seated around us found out we were pilots from Minnesota, many fun conversations arose. The owner asked how we found their restaurant. This is truly a hidden jewel. The first impression of this joint is fair with unkept lawn and limited parking in the front. Nevertheless, there are more parking in the back. It is stated to be a pizzeria. The door opposite the pizzeria is the restaurant itself. I have been here twice for lunch and here for dinner. Had always been impressed by their fine cooking. Surprise to see so little review for this rest. Trying their pizza for first time. Just had their mushroom pizza, a must if you are a mushroom lover! The pizza dough is perfectly thin and crispy. The mushroom flavor is baked to perfection bringing the eater a memorable mushroom sensation. The only draw back is the amount of mushroom found in the pizza, but then again I don't think any rest can put enough mushroom in the pizza that fits my craving. read more

Where do I start. I have been going here religiously for the last few year and i can't say a bad thing about the place. The staff is amazing and the owners come around and chat with everone every time we eat makes us feal like part of the family, and talking food with a well accomplished chief is always fun. It is BYOB so it keeps your total meal price down if you drink. Save money on booze and spend it on the amazing food. Plus their is a liquor store in walking distance if you run low. Some places are worth Taking the time to write about. This is one of the best places to eat. Food is so delicious and carefully made that's unbelievable. Also it's a BYOB, can't get any better than that, I always bring my favorite wine which makes the check much lower. I recommend!!! The staff is great, they'll go back the extra mile to make sure we enjoyed our meal. They usually bring extra sauce when requested. They fish over pasta is the best! Also love the appetizers. Great Italian food!! I ordered the bucatini and the pancetta was an amazing addition to the pasta dish! My boyfriend ordered the bolognese dish and I was lucky enough to have a bite before he devoured it and IT WAS AMAZING! My parents ordered the chicken artichoke/spinach, and the rosemary chicken-- they rated it a 9 out of 10!! Cynthia was our waitress who is also the one who makes the desserts, and I highly recommend either the blood orange cheesecake or the coconut flan! My sister and I ordered breaded chicken sandwiches with lettuce and tomato, without mayo. When we unwrapped them a bit later, the lettuce was brown and the roll was mushy,even without mayonnaise on it. Very unappetizing, and the price was higher than other restaurants. Truly amazing Italian food. My wife and I have been coming here for about 20 years. We recently moved about 20 minutes away. Came back for take out 4/13/19 after not eating here for a year. When eating the unbelievably tasty Linguine Bolognese, it made realize how fantastic DiMaio's really is. I think this may be the best Italian in New Jersey, which is a pretty resounding endorsement. I don't recall the food in Italy being as good as this. The people who run this are also awesome. It's still owned and operated by the same Italian-American family that's owned since it at least the late 90s - maybe forever. Pizza is also excellent - it's a slightly sweeter sauce - thin crust. Also, in twenty years - never a mistake in take out order. They have a computerized system. But, go there in person (BYO) - you will not be disappointed. read more

Met friends here on Saturday night for dinner. First time and used Yelp to find a place. Off street parking in their lot so that was a plus. Warmly greeted by the hostess who made nice conversation on the way to the table. The restaurant was active with a few tables open at 8:00. Sat for a minute when Lauren, our server, came over to welcome us and open our wine. Saw we were waiting for 2 more and asked if she could bring us anything while we were waiting. Busboy brought a basket of focaccia and rolls. Focaccia was very good, rolls so/so. Served with a very small cup of butter but when asked, Lauren brought us oil with Parmesan. Friends arrived and the restaurant totally filled up with a couple large parties. Lots of talking and laughter. A bit loud. Concerned about food delivery timing with large parties but that wasn't to be the case. Started with included house salad which was an assortment of greens and tasty dressing. Shared mozzarella & tomato and lightly fried calamari with spicy sauce. Ok sized portions and both tasty. Bread basket filled again but out of the focaccia. It was good. Our dinners quickly came out still steaming from cooking and we enjoyed pasta with white clams, assorted seafood over pasta, shrimp and scallops in cream sauce and eggplant parm. All were done nicely.. good flavors and size. Shared some dessert, couple of cappuccinos... never felt rushed... good timing of service... well trained staff. I will typically stop in here & pick up a hot sandwich whenever I am in the Berkeley Heights/New Providence area. They've always made a nice chicken parm hero. What a horrible experience. My fiancee and I had an hour to eat tonight. We sat down and were served bread and water by a backwaiter in a timely manner but waited about ten minutes for our server to greet us. "Greet", in this case, means he approached us and gruffly asks, "Okay, you ready?" We ordered just two entrees, no appetizers: pappardelle for her, Kansas City strip (medium rare) for me. We barely even see our server in the room until our entrees arrive... forty minutes later. The steak was way overdone at medium well, and I had to flag down our backwaiter just to bring it to someone's attention. We didn't have enough time to have another steak prepared so we just had it removed from the check and taken away. Our server didn't seem to care, barely muttering an apology. Full disclosure: I am a professional restaurant server and bartender, myself, and it's maddening to have such an awful dining experience. I know exactly how difficult it is to serve a busy restaurant, but the dining room had only a handful of tables. An overcooked steak is completely out of a waiter's control, but their utter lack of presence and attention throughout the course of a meal (whether it involves 1 course or 10) is appalling. P.S. I always question reviewers who complain about steak temperatures because, as a server, I realize that many diners don't understand what a true steak temp is. I have never had a disappointing meal here: whether fish, pasta, or you name it, all good! The service is friendly and attentive, and the ambiance is relaxed and cheerful. What was once my favorite Italian restaurant in New Providence is no more. The food I had today was completely different than what I had just months ago when I went in to try out their lunch menu. One of their best dishes is the chicken with spinach and artichokes. Just a few months ago, it was a pleasantly generous portion and came without pasta. A thick piece of chicken breast with lots of spinach and artichokes. Now, it's mostly pasta with a tiny piece of chicken. While I understand the need to make a profit, it's not the right way to go to completely change the portions and ingredients in a dish (putting pasta to replace the lack of chicken). Such a shame. Having grown up and lived 37 years in the area, in visiting NJ for the holidays to be with family Di Maio's reminded me, very clearly, that we simply don't have authentic family Italian restaurants like this in California. Most of my friends who grew up in California think Italian food means Olive Garden, have never stepped inside a place like Di Maio's because they simply don't exist out here. Came early on the Friday before Christmas 2012, warned by my mother that it was likely to be crowded and we would need reservations. It wasn't which surprised me, but by the time we left, around seven it was packed, seemingly by mostly regulars, each who seemed to be greeted personally by the hostess and serving staff. I was allowed to offer off menu which was appreciated, chicken Francaise, which was excellent. And even though I have a hardy appetite, I couldn't finish it, leaving the remainder for dinner the following night. The chicken tortollini soup, which served as my starter, was equally excellent. Since I've made only one visit, my review of four stars reflect this but I would suggest reading the other reviews for a more comprehensive evaluation of the food. This was a Siri suggestion for pizza while driving on i78. And what a great suggestion it was! This is the kind of local gem that every neighborhood needs. There are two significant features of DiMaio that make it outstanding. First, the pizza of course. We ordered a pie with fresh mushrooms. They make a thin crust pie-and they are masters of it. You can tell because when holding up a slice it doesn't flop down. The crust is really the star of this pizza. Secondly the staff really cares about the product. Sitting down at the counter feasting on our pie, you can just tell that they do. Between the cleanliness of the kitchen and the caring staff-it's a home run! Four stars baby! read more

Good good, fettucine alfredo is fresh made pasta which I like but other pastas are not made fresh?! I've never had bad/old fish there so if I feel like fish abd my family wants Italian I like to go here. The restaurant itself is a dark red color which I find to be morbid and not inviting. Although the service has always been nice I find that it takes awhile for God to get out of the kitchen (consistently, not just a busy night) and that's why I rated the place a 3, the food I feel is worth more stars but every time we go there it takes awhile to get the food. read more

This dine in restaurant / take out pizzeria is much larger and nicer than you'd assume from the outside or even when you first walk in. Our order was taken by the head chef as we were a large party during the lunch hour. For appetizers we tried the Rice Ball, Fried Calamari, Mussels and a sausage pie. I particularly thought the Rice Ball stood out from the crowd, it was a large rice ball with a crispy outside and creamy and hot inside. I've had rice balls before where they're pre-made and the inside is served cold but this must have been made to order. For Lunch I went the Fettuccine Neptune which was served with scallops, shrimp and crab meat. Consider the price of $13.95 I thought you get a healthy serving of fish and pretty good fish at that. The service was quite poor. The waitress barked at us, yelled across the restaurant to other servers (and they yelled back), and did not offer options with our meal (salad dressing, etc). She barely stood at the table for a second and stared behind her when she spoke. Also, the water server kept walking from table to table and filling no one's water - including ours! I ordered chicken francaise. The chicken was very thick and tough - quite difficult to cut and we were only given butter knives. The meal came with a small salad that had mostly yellow lettuce. The seating was also odd, in that the restaurant was empty and one table was reserved; nonetheless, they crammed all guests that came in close together. I felt a little hesitant about leaving a poor review since we have only been there once, but the meal was expensive and pretty poor overall. When you pay a bit more for a meal, you naturally expect more, and I suppose that is part of the problem with this place as well. $20 for mediocre chicken francaise and a sad salad. read more
