Ok..decent enough, but much better places in the berkeley heights/chatham area. Pizza is good enough, and staff is very friendly, but it says they're open until 11 pm 7 days a week, and they usually are closed much earlier than that. Change your hours for god's sake! Cozy place in a sleepy town. The food is pricey, but the portions are generous, the quality is excellent and the staff is very friendly. They are known for their Italian seafood dishes, but I normally order the Calamari and the Chicken Parm. It's a BYOB which is great as there's Berkeley Wine right next door. Went today for lunch. Food is excellent and very high quality. Very good choices including pizza, pasta and the gamut of chicken, veal, etc. dishes. The Arancini were a delicious choice for an appetizer. We had that and a Margherita pie, delicious. Salads followed - nice size for a lunch portion. Two of our party had chicken parmigiana, one had eggplant rolllatini and I had rigatoni with sausage. Everything was wonderful. It is owned by a lovely couple named Tammy and Sal. We had the pleasure of meeting and talking for a bit with Tammy. The warm personal environment of this establishment make it a true neighborhood gem. I can not wait to come back for dinner. We were a group of twelve all of whom were traveling a bit to meet my wife and I. We sort of bragged about the restaurant for its food and being a BYOB. Our wines were opened quickly and we all decided to select from the $29 fixe pre menu - four courses. Our friends were completely happy with their selections - the veal and Seafood Fra Diavolo were notable. Wait staff were efficient, attentive and friendly. Adorable, cozy atmosphere. Outstanding service and delicious food. The table next to us had a child with special needs and our waiter went above and beyond to make the family comfortable, chatting with the child and joking around with him and checking in frequently to make sure all was well. To be quite honest, you don't see this enough and my husband and I were touched. I made sure to rave about our waiter upon leaving. Really good Jersey pizza, one of the best in the area (after Frank's over in Blue Star closed that is), though a bit on the pricier side for pizza. I've never eaten in the really dark room they seem serve people in, but most people I know go there to pick up pizzas (fyi - they don't do delivery.) The wait's never too bad and the food is always yummy. The workers all seem to be family or family friends and veeeeeeeeery eye-talian, which is always more reassuring than the trying to get food from half-stoned people at fast food chains. read more

All I can say is it was horrible. Table was wobbly, restaurant was so loud you couldn't hear the people you were with, chipped wine glass, food was mediocre and the service was less than pleasant. Maybe hiring a service staff that could smile and speak english would make a difference. Would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. I will spend my money elsewhere. read more

it is too bad the food in this place is good. The service is terrible. They give you the wrong food and then give you a hard time about it. The owner stands next to you at your table talking to someone else all night and never even comes over and asks if you enjoyed your meal. I cannot believe the comments I am reading. This Italian restaurant is top notch. They go to painstaking detail to make sure you have a fresh, not frozen, not pre-prepared, meal. They go through every item that is plated to make sure there is not a blemish to be found (someone I know has witnessed this). I have never ever been disappointed with any meal I have had at DiMaio's. I know for a fact that the owner only purchases top quality seafood, meats and fish. The fish dishes are outstanding and served with high quality accompaniments. Sal also makes the best Bolognese sause this side of the Atlantic. If you haven't been there you have to try it. It is not cheap, I would say most dishes are $20-$30 but you get what you pay for. The pizza is good, but if I want great pizza, I need to drive to Elizabeth NJ or NYC. read more

Not worth returning to! Very overpriced...2 pasta dishes, Cesar salad and fountain soda ($3 for a small glass of seltzer!!!) was $50 including tip. This is a great place - excellent dishes like Fettuccini Locallos and Fettuccini Neptune. One side has take out including great pizza and the other is a nice restaurant. Had our first experience here last night. It was all around very good. We had the burrata appetizer special which was amazing. I ordered the salmon al porro which was slightly overdone but not worth sending back and definitely needed more sauce. My husband got the rigatoni with homemade sausage which was outstanding. They brought fresh bread to the table, and salads come with all the meals. I hate olives, and there were a TON in the salad, seriously, more olives than I've ever seen in a salad, so after I picked them all out, there wasn't much left, and the salad is tiny to begin with. I'll make sure to ask for no olives in the future. The thing that my husband and I were the most shocked about was that the desserts were $10 a piece! If you've never been here before, they bring out a tray, so there's no menu with the prices. We ordered two and couldn't believe that we spent $20 on desserts that were really nothing special. Total price gouging. Overall, a good experience, and we'll be back for sure, but I'd recommend skipping the dessert. read more

We've been going to DiMaio's almost weekly for nearly 25 years. We've watched it grow from a modest pizza joint with a salad bar into what we consider to be the best Italian restaurant in the area. My favorite appetizer is the fried mozzarella in a lemon and caper sauce. The specials are always creative and at times exciting. They have moved far away from the tomato gravy dishes, reflecting a variety of tastes that range from Italian to Sicilian to Spanish and Portuguese. The fish and seafood dishes are especially tasty. We had cod recently served atop a fresh corn chowder base that was outstanding. The service is friendly and personalized -- at least for us regulars; and ordering off the menu has never been a problem. The regulars provide their own ambiance, which further livens up the place. read more

Very disappointing. Found this place via Google and it had a good review. Directed me to the Resturant website for menu. Way off. Prices had gone up $10 per entre from what is on their website. Not willing to accommodate any chance without an additional charge. And the place was empty on a Monday night so we wern't asking for anything exotic. Just very disappointing. read more

Pizza is very good and prices reasonable. We went at an off time around 2:30 on a Saturday and had the restaurant to ourselves. Thought the service was lacking (took only our order and gave us the check) but maybe that's because the waiter was supposed to be on break since it was such an off time. read more

We have been going to Di Maio's for more than 25 years. Most frequently, for the last few years, we order take out from their take out menu. The food is always very good and portions are very ample. My wife is a native of Italy so she tends to be very critical of Italian cooking. I do agree that when you eat in the restaurant, service is not hurried but the waiters have always been extremely friendly and attentive. read more

This was our first time dining at Di Maio's and it will be our last. I understand that even the best of restaurants can send out an entree that is undercooked but it is how the staff, management and owners handle it that separate the great restaurants from the bad. I have to say when we sent back the extremely dry and raw pasta (not in anyway resembling Al Dente) we were disappointed. The fact that the server was rude, the meal was left on our bill and came out a second time just as undercooked proved Di Maio to fall under the bad restaurant category. Our server told us the owner tried the pasta and told her it was fine. Our server also told us that she did not make the decision to leave the items on the menu which they did take off our bill in the end. At no point did the manager or owner check on us and apologize for the poorly cooked entree's. In addition to our experience the lovely couple next to us had arrived at the same time. They waited over an hour for their food which never came. This is a restaurant that has been around for a long time so I don't understand how it was being managed so poorly on this particular evening. The restaurant seemed to not be able to handle a full, busy night. They could not service the tables in a friendly manner or get the food out in a timely manner. It either came out raw or not at all. I was very disappointed and would never go back. read more

Solid neighborhood choice. Staff is friendly, service can be lacking and wait time for food can be long. But it's an overall nice dining experience. Food is always good. There are definitely hits and misses on the menu. Pizza is very good. The seafood dishes in heavy cream can be overwhelming but standard pasta dishes are very good. I love eggplant parm and unfortunately here it's a miss. But the chicken parm is a nicely executed dish. Steak dishes have arrived perfect or over cooked. Chicken entrees tend to be good choices. I do wish the owners would move through the restaurant and speak to other diners. They only take the time to speak to certain tables which makes the environment a bit too 'clubby' at times. Waiters do the same. You see when certain people/families come in they get passed off to other waiters. Certain families always get the same wait staff. It's kind of funny to watch this all happen. But we always find ourselves coming back (and no, we are not one if the tables that gets owner attention or specific waiter attention). Oh, it's byob too. read more
