I heard about this fast-food style dim sum place that opened up awhile back from several people who had given them a try on Yelp. The place seemed quite promising, so we decided to stop by for a visit on a Saturday afternoon. Dim Sum King is located in a small plaza with a small parking lot. There's not too many people, so parking isn't too tough to find. It does seem like business is probably more busy during the weekdays when people are stopping in for a quick lunch or take-out.
We decided to dine-in and order just a few dishes before deciding whether we would want more. There's maybe about 5 or 6 tables; most of the food is already prepared and behind the counter - immediately after you order, the workers prepare the food and bring it out.
All items are $2.88 although you can order specialty items for $8.99. They also have combos, drinks, etc.
Would recommend:
-Egg tarts: the crust was crispy and quite flaky while the inside was warm and gooey. I thought the flavor wasn't too sweet and tasted quite good warm.
-Turnip cake: glad that I ordered this because you definitely can taste the turnip flavor in each bite. The turnip cakes are quite thick slices - unfortunately they served us the cakes a little cold, so it didn't taste too fresh while we ate there. We ended up taking it home and refrying it ourselves.
-Sesame ball: tastes really good while warm. Of course, these are fried so they taste amazing. But I really enjoyed the filling inside (don't remember what it was but I think it was either sesame or lotus paste).
-Rice noodle roll with beef: traditional dim sum dish - tasted quite fresh and not too heavy.
Okay dishes:
-Pan fried taro cake: this was quite cold and not fresh. The cake was hard and a bit dry. Ended up reheating it at home, which tasted much better.
-Siu Mai: definitely tasted not so fresh and maybe frozen before they were warmed up. I like that they give you five instead of the usual four, but flavor-wise, it was just okay.
-BBQ pork sticky rice wrap: it does have salty egg yolk, which I enjoyed. Taste was decent and not too bad.
-Haim sui gok and shrimp har gow: both were alright. Not the dishes I'd normally order, but it wasn't bad.
We also got the shrimp rice noodle roll and sweet rice cake. The rice noodle for the shrimp roll was a little dry and the shrimp didn't taste too fresh. As for the sweet rice cake, my dad said that they looked good in the display case. But after he got the cakes, he realized that the top one was fresh while the bottom two under were probably older and leftover from a day before since they were quite dry.
Overall, not a bad place to stop by for some quick dim sum. This probably won't be my go-to for dim sum, but it's nice to know there's another option in the area. Did feel a little weird since we were the only customers and one of the workers just stood by the kitchen entrance, watching us eat. Also, we wanted to mix and match the taro and radish cake, which they said wasn't allowed. But when we ordered the sesame balls, they only had two left, so they added a haim sui gok to complete the dish. Meh, I understand the rules but thought it was a little hypocritical of them to do that. read more
